keep the analog tv signal and turn off the government. As Herc said, that signal has served us well for more than 60 years. Now the government, on the other hand -especially this last scumbag- serves only 2 things. Jack, and Sh*t, and Jack left town. (Bonus points for whoever identifies who said that.) the end of the world as we knew it

See, the deal is, the Government needs the standard analog broadcast freequencies open for Police, fire, medical emergency and domestic military (national guard, coast guard, martial law army mobilization activities) in case of terrorist attacks or domestic riots.

And with the lowest econimic class being told they can no longer have free broadcast television unless they spend a weeks worth of grocery money on an easy to steal decoder box and the poor no longer being kept hypnotized and brainwashed by television broadcasts (such as half of the main networks line-ups being police procedurals trying to cnvince the population that crime doesn;t pay and the ppolice are infallible) those riots will be coming. Especuially if the current regime declares a state of emergency and refuses to vacate the white house next January.

Finally....

Ratings are overrated

And woefully inaccurate in this era of streaming video. Wouldn't surprise me if not just sweeps but the Nielsen ratings themselves were history in another 10-15 years... if that long.
What is the point of sweeps ANYWAY?
by Big Dumb Ape

Seriously, in the digital age of DVRs ...with people recording one show while simultaneously watching something else or stockpiling episodes to eventually watch them when they have time...and given that the ratings really are a mathematical computation relative to the larger viewer audience actually out there (ie. just like polls the can be waaaaaaaaaaay off), what purpose do they serve? Yes, I know they help to set advertising rates, but it's all on bullshit data for the most part.

Not to mention, my biggest beef with the Neilsens and ratings and sweeps overall has always been the obvious bullshit fact that the networks wait UNTIL a sweeps period begins to break out their heavy guns (special movie events, award shows) or their heavily marketed "a very special episode of" runs on a show. That's utter bullshit -- it totally creates a skewed curve. So fuck it: just rate the shows every week, never have sweeps, see how things go after a full 52 weeks or whatever.

Oh yeah! And much like every American has the RIGHT to vote, the ratings/sweep system needs a massive overall so that more people are monitored or can submit their viewing data. But the truth is that would TRULY freak out some of the corporate powers that be. Case in point, here in LA where I live where a longstanding argument has been that the Neilsens don't even come CLOSE to properly monitoring and reporting the Hispanic/Latino community (which being Los Angeles is cleary very huge), which would show that a station like Telemundo is actually beating the shit out of a major network...

Why wouldn't Telemundo be beating the networks?

When the networks dress up their actresses like the smoking hot latina women you see on Telemundo or Univision, maybe then they can catch up...

they dont have methods to track satellite viewers, net views, dvd views etc.

its a tiny little aggregate score taken from a few TV's that is supposed to represent everyone in the USA.

Nielsen fails. so bring on 02/09, Nielsen will continue to fail then as Nielsen will fail in 03/09.

DVD sales

I would think that DVD season sales trumps what nielsen says anyway these days since that's great money for the networks. I don't think a commercial ever influences me anyway if I even bother to watch one with DVR. Of course now they have ad's in the show corners which bothers the fuck out of me, but it was a reasonable way to make sure shows stay on air.

It frequently beats other networks. But since the other networks don't counter-program against it, they don't worry about it. But they're still tracking it, and they're still reporting the numbers.

Also, they've started tracking DVR recording, although I think it might be limited to services like Tivo, not generic DVRs.

June to Sept = 3 months of TV wasteland. Now Dec to Feb = 3 months of TV wasteland. Freakin Heroes will probably have its "Fall Finale" at the end of Nov Sweeps and we won't see hide nor hair of Sylar and Co. until March. Can't wait to see what crap NBC comes up with that month. Ah well, if no actors strike we should have brand spankin new LOST and 24 to keep us warm in Jan/Feb, which is all we really need.

I actually work for Nielsen, and thought it seems I caught this article a day late, in case anyone comes back, I figured I would correct a few things. While you're right that some of the old methods used to collect ratings is out of date, we actually use newer technology (besides the old diaries) to measure viewership on a daily basis. So if anything, our ratings are actually more accurate then they ever were. That new technology also lets us monitor DVR usage, so we can tell if people are watching a show as it airs, or on a delay (anywhere from 26 seconds to 7 days later gets measured). The numbers get broken out in a bunch of different ways (live only, live and DVR playback combined, etc.) Big Dumb Ape - you're right about the flaw in the sweeps system, in that stations and networks can load up their best material, but with the new technology, we are pulling data overnight every day of the year, so its becoming more possible to see where those skewed numbers are. So you're right, sweeps are actually becoming less relevant, and though I am nowhere near high enough in the company to have any say in anything like this, it wouldnt surprise me if sweeps were phased out in the next 5-10 years. On the other hand though, I would say the company is becoming more relevant than it ever has, because the technology is enabling us to track information in a ton of ways that were never before possible, and that information is much more useful to advertisers. And to address a few other points: yes, we do track satellite views. We also can do some information on online views, but at present those numbers don't get put into the ratings that you see reported. Its being worked on though, and you'll see that element eventually incorporated (same as DVR can be included now). We don't track DVD views because advertisers don't place commercials in the DVDs. Other Nielsen businesses do track DVD sales though (Nielsen does more than TV ratings; we have a lot of consumer research businesses) And yes we track Spanish-speaking stations. We also report on Spanish-speaking viewers, and Telemundo and Univision are always big components of their viewing habits. You can even see the latest results on our website.
