I am one of the few who actually liked Ang's movie. My problem with it wasn't the weird pseudo-serious vibe, the father/son freudian relationship, or any of that. I also thought ILM did a great job, with one glaring exception. The design of the Hulk.

For some ridiculous reason they thought that the Hulk should in some way resemble more of a real man than just a big green brute. Ummm, why? He is The Hulk, WTF did you think this was supposed to be, a hybrid of The Hulk and a Man?

This is a very interesting trailer, and I am optimistic. I like the hint of effects to see; Liv Tyler Rocks, Ed actually comes off as meek, so that is a good Banner-ism. As for abomination, it's an interesting theme--become a monster to stop a monster. I'd like to to see it. Also, I was unconvinced upon hearing William Hurt would be Ross, but he could kick some serious tushy.

This trailer is MUCH better, no doubt, but I still think the Hulk looks a little sketchy. I dunno, maybe the Hulk truly is impossible to capture on screen without looking a little fake? Oh well, they still have a month or two to further polish the effects. I just hope the money Marvel makes off of Iron Man doesn't get torpedoed by their loss on this one. I'll be surprised if this one does well, not for it being good or bad, but just the general public not liking the Hulk very much, especially after what happened a few years ago.

Don't know what will become of this hulk movie, with bad marketing and all, but just saw Iron Man, and man, Iron "Tony Manero" Man walking away after blowing up the tank still sucks. I didn't expect transformers quality SFX here, but there sure are some pretty weak effects. Has ILM opened a new low budget office or was it just rushed beacause of the opening date?

Ang's Hulk get some love. It was good. Minus poodles. One thing people dont give any love to was the CG in the first Hulk, it was great. I've said it before, theres some really great talent in this new Hulk but we're not going to see a well acted human drama, we wanna the Hulk! A giant green man -and he just doesnt look that good. Everytime I see him it takes me right out of it. Abomonitaion looks better, more believable, more 'realistic' (for lack of a better word) on screen. I think this Hulk just looks cheap and kinda stupid. Hope I'm wrong, love to see a great Hulk flick.

I agree-- the classic series was absolute fucking shit. It was a cross between The Fugitive and Highway To Heaven-- a dude just driving around small town to small town helping random people who were robbed by local thugs or whatever. He only turned into The Hulk to break down a door or something stupid. Fucking pointless. And I hated how the whole thing was in the hills in broad daylight.....all shot around Santa Clarita, CA if you know it. About 35 minutes north of L.A.

Ang Lee's Hulk...
by Ageoffroyi
Apr 30th, 2008
03:18:53 PM
Was a truly great flick. I just saw it again this past weekend at Ebertfest with Lee himself in attendance. He's proud of the film and rightly so. I don't understand the need for Norton's Hulk, though I'm sure it will be great in it's own right-Norton's never let me down. The problem that I have with critics of Lee's Hulk is this: take the criticisms of any truly bad superhero movie i.e. Batman & Robin-it was poorly acted, not dark enough, not intelligent enough, too many rubber nipples, and counter it with Lee's Hulk, which is well acted, somewhat dark and moody, intelligent, and if anything had too few nipples. It was the Hulk all the critics would have said they'd wanted until they actually saw it, and decided that deep down, they just wanted HULK SMASH-explosion-HULK SMASH. That's just my opinion, I could be wrong, could just be blinded by my love of Jennifer Connelly.
Well...

The Hulk is enormous and green. The mere fact of that makes it impossible for him to look real, the most one can hope for is for him to look like a practical effect, like Davy Jones' beard did at times. One of the big problems is that the Hulk is daylight character, which is merciless when it comes to CGI showing holes. Anyway. I really liked Ang Lee's Hulk, and I'm sure I'll like this movie in a totally different way.

In 1977 the Star Wars aliens looked like men in suits and the ships looked like plastic model kits. Did it ruin the movie? HELL NO! So quit over-scrutinizing the damn trailer FX because that's what they are, FX rendered for the trailer! The final movie will have finalized rendering of the Hulk and he'll look as good as he needs to be while delivering his kick as demolition performances. Is it so hard to put down the damn Star Trek Tri-corder for one second and just enjoy the movie on a whole without waving the white flag for every CGI shot you can distinguish? If we all did this for every man in a suit, every blue-screen, every matte painting and every optical effect we saw in the movies we watched as kids then we'd never enjoy the magic of cinema beyond a perfect production! Get off your damn high horses!

Wow, he looks horrible. Very poor, sorry guys. It's kind of a shame, if this film (and certain others like it) were to be made in say, another 10-15 years time, then the technology might be in place to do them properly, but we're just not there yet for realistic semi-human characters like the Hulk. This looks like a step backwards, actually. He looks 'drawn' to put it crudely. Ang's Hulk was better, IMHO.

....still suffers from a major, major problem. While we see a little more of Banner and the character dynamics, and while it certainly looks far better than Ang Lee's version, the HULK STILL LOOKS FAKE. And by fake, I mean CGI crapola; he doesn't look the slightest bit real, and thus damages the whole intended effect. It's enough to kill a potentially solid movie: it pulls you out, looks laughable, doesn't carry any weight or drama in the creature. Hopefully, it's because the effects aren't finished, but I doubt that - the monster doesn't look anything like a breathing creature made out of flesh. Whatever special effects company was hired - yeesh, bad move. Because Peter Jackson has proven that it can indeed be done in some realistic measure...

The part where Hulk kicks Tim Roth into the next county triggered something that's been bothering me for a while: how are normal humans able to survive the same beatdown a movie monster gives to, say, a reinforced steel door? Think of all the times you've witnessed cinematic feats of gargantuan strength by some evil beastie. Now think of all the times you've witnessed the (not super) hero getting an industrial-grade bitchslap from the same beastie. Does he fall to the earth in a blob-like puddle because every single bone in his body has just been sundered? Of course not. He rises defiantly, grimaces, wipes the dribble of blood from his mouth and says something like, um, "Is that all you got?" Just sayin'...

Perhaps Hulk was sub-consciously holding back just enough as to not kill the poor dumb bastard. he is, after all, a "hero", is he not? I think that's the problem I have with these Hulk flicks - Hulk is not a "hero" character. He's a beast, a creature, a thing! Even in the funny pages, the more they try to make Hulk a "good guy" character, the less interesting he is.

This looks second-rate. The Hulk just looks absolutely artificial, perhaps even more so than in the Ang Lee version. The inclusion of the TV show is a good nod, but why can't we have something new? At the very least, that's what Lee's Hulk offered not to say that movie was successful either. This did not get me psyched at all.

Looks to be a blast. Ang Lee's HULK was okay. I mean, I'll watch it if there's nothing else on. It kinda felt like a mashup of an overanalyzed origin story, and some stuff the sfx guys thought would be cool. The tv show was alright, like, when I was a kid. Now, I couldn't bear to watch it. Hopefully, they won't borrow too liberally from it. I know that's the version a lot of people are familiar with, but damn. This time, we'll have to hope they don't get too carried away with the action to make it appeal to Joe Lunchbox. Y'know, I never realized so many CGI experts came to this site.

He's a raging monster! Why try to make him into Spidey 2.0? That wasn't his appeal, it was the fear losing control, of what's inside you, that made the character great. They got that right, but then they say, "Oh, wait, I can control him enough to kick Mr. Orange's ass, right? Then I'll calm down and go back to being a fugitive or piece of research meat." Huh???

Trying to use gamma rays, a common form of radiation, as the explanation as to why the Hulk transformation occurs is ridiculous. It just doesn't hold be cause we KNOW that over exposure to gamma rays doesn't cause that. They needed to do something to explain things in a way that made ANY kind of sense.

My comment didn't really apply specifically to the new Hulk flick. Seeing as I haven't caught the movie yet, I didn't want to make too many assumptions as to how Tim Roth's character was able to walk away from Hulk giving him Das Boot. Maybe he's wearing randomnameian body armor, maybe he's already gamma 'roided, etc. At any rate, I can't help but think a kick powerful enough to knock you fifty feet backwards is one you're not getting up from anytime soon...

Tim Roth has already benefitted from the super soldier serum (the same stuff that toughened up Captain America). He can can go mano-mano with the Hulk because he's already super-strong and super-durable. He just can't beat him that way, thus the need for the abomination transformation. That being said, this looks pretty fun. But I had high hopes for Ang Lee's Hulk, too, and was extremely disappointed.

... I bought into King Kong, etc. They could have done a better job here. Also, he looks too much like Lee's Hulk. I dug the look of this film. Yes, many of you have written The Hulk looks too CG, but, honestly, if the story is more "smash" than "wahhh!" I'm into it. I have a feeling the final rendered effects will be up to par.

Plus, that trailer showed Banner trying to escape from the military, to hide. This is a good character development wrinkle we didn't see much of in Ang Lee's film.

Hopefully the new Hulk will deliver.

Ang Lee's Hulk looked better than this one...

I thought Ang Lee's CG Hulk looked great. The CG dogs not so much, but that last big desert action set piece in the 2003 Hulk was balls out rad. Hulk in plain daylight and he interacted with a million different elements of the scene seamlessly. I think the visual look of the Hulk in this one, 5 years later, is a visible step down. And to the guy who was saying that these are trailer effects, I remember reading an interview with Louis Leterrier where he said that the reason we didn't see a lot of advance promotional material for this is because he wanted to make sure the effects are fully finished before they get out there for the public to see. He thought that was what killed Lee's Hulk, that the Superbowl spot with the unfinished CG put a nail in that film's coffin. I dunno, to me this new Hulk looks really pixelated and dirty, but we'll see how it all goes down in the finished film. Which I'm sure will be a solidly entertaining but fairly stupid piece of summer fluff.

when I watched this, it's so bad. I like Ed Norton, but he just seems wrong for this part, and the scene where he's hulking out looks like he's straining on a large, corn-laden turd.

What really made me laugh was the scene where Hulk front-kicks Roth into the next county, somehow without liquifying every bone in his body. Now, this might play out differently in the movie, but the trailer implies that Roth does not get the serum until after he's kicked by Hulk.

I think they made a big mistake doing the Hulk as a fully CGI character. I dunno, aside from Gollumn, I can't think of any fully CGI characters in any movie that completely worked for me. It's not just the animation: I just don't get any feeling from the clips that the Hulk is an extension of Edward Norton's Banner. For me, the real proof that they would have been better off with an actor in make-up/prosthetics is how good Ron Perlman comes off in Hellboy. The film was't great, but I thought the onscreen realization of the character was terrific: visually stunning, faithful to the comic (sans hooves), and you got a strong emotional connection through the actor's direct performance.

I could give a fuck about this movie but have a question about the CGI... 15 years ago CGI motherfuckers were able to make CGI Dinosaurs believably exist and blend in perfectly with the real world around them and the actors in that real world (except for the Galimimus stampede or however the fuck you spell them - that looks a bit cack now - but the rest of that dino flick is solid!). So how come 15 years since then CGI motherfuckers can't manage to make a big green monster-man look in any way believable? 15 years!!! Gay.

First half of the trailer looks like the Bourne Ultimatum, the second half turns into the second half of I Am Legend. What the fuck, I'm gonna watch it. That close up of the Hulk's face made me wince a bit, but the action sequences look pretty solid-- the filmakers have certainly nailed the Hulk as being an engine of utterly terrifying destruction. Then quite frankly you are a sucker. The father/son relationship bullshit might have been present but it was also completely and utterly ridiculous and didn't have a single honest moment. I can't believe people could actually be fooled into thinking that movie had depth. The human moments in this film seem to be much more rich, just in the trailer alone. A Bruce Banner with a personality doesn't hurt. I'm willing to bet this is easily the deeper film and, despite it's more entertaining status, a much better exploration of Bruce Banner's situation.

The reason being is the fact that ILM was building the models for skin texture and skeletal structure for 3 years in prep for Jurassic Park!! Three fucking years to develop the right look because no one had attempted it before. These days they give films about 9 months and half the C.G. artists they used to. Also the amount of effects shots-- can anyone find the number? I'm sure its less than 150 shots in J.P. And in today's shit like Transformers or Pirates or whats her fuck-- there can be over 2,000 effects shots. Back in J.P. they were smart and just focusing on the creatures and the bare minimum of what needed to be C.G. Today they are trying to make fire, water, crowds of people, explosions, creatures, change the color of the fucking building, add more cars, make Mark Wahlberg's dick bigger-- all sorts of crazy shit. Less is more. All these fuckers forget that.

I praised it here when it first came out and I still maintain that there's a lot to like. It looks & feels like a comic book. They had a good feeling for who the Hulk was (ie. misunderstood, destructive but with heroic tendencies). And as mentioned, the desert action sequence was ass-kickeriffic. But it WAS boring. Not because it was introspective, but because the introspection was terrible. Technobabble and amateur psychology are no substitute for actual emotion. The character moments were shallow and dull. And the climax was weird and stupid. *** But at the point where Hulk escapes the desert base, and for the next 10 minutes or so, it's a glorious, fantastic Hulk movie.

I'm on the fence about Ang Lee's version - there are good things about it and bad things. One of the good things IMO was the Hulk design. Not so much this time out. I was just gonna post a response about Harry saying the TV series was goddamn great, but allow me to reinterate: It sucked! A drifter who wanders from town to town only to get his ass whipped (while helping complete strangers no less.)turn into the Hulk who tosses ppl around and hitchikes down that lonely road with sleepytime piano music. *credits roll* The first two TV Movies were good, I'll give you that but the rest of the series was shit on a creamsicle.

One of the things I liked about Lee's Hulk was the end in which Bana/Banner says in "espanol":don't make me angry, you would'nt like me when I'm angry..only to end with Elfman's powerful theme followed by Velvet revolver's set me free.I could care less what the haters say about Ang's Hulk, as it surpassed it's successors, i.e. the rediculous Superman Returns,The effortless Ghost Rider and the Floptastic Four.Norton who was great in American History X and the 24th Hour has now turned into a control freak...fuckin diva is no Banner compared to (Eric) Bana.

Hulk was a hero-- Not just a raging monster.
by ZeroCorpse
Apr 30th, 2008
05:40:42 PM
Anybody who thinks Hulk was never a hero, or that he was only ever a raging monster (within a complex man who was battling his inner demons) has apparently never read the comics that featured the Hulk... Or they think Ang Lee's version is the real story and the comics are wrong.

Hulk was a member of the Avengers, Defenders, and the heroic side of the Secret Wars. He's been fully capable of teaming up with other heroes and working toward a common goal, and even when he's the savage Hulk, he's still got enough sense to know the people he likes from the people who mean to do bad things.

THIS Hulk is looking like a combination of the 616 version and the Ultimate version, with a little TV Hulk thrown in for good measure.

The problem with Ang Lee's movie was that he turned BANNER into a complex, multi-tiered personality that spent a lot of time navel-gazing, and that's just NOT Banner. Not the TV version, not the Ultimate version, and certainly not the 616 version.

The deepest Banner ever got was during Peter David's run when they got into the "Hulk as extreme multiple personality disorder" storyline, and that's where the abusive father angle came in. It was never a part of Hulk's story until that run of comics, and it's largely ignored today except as an accepted "root" for Banner's inability to control the Hulk.

Ang Lee's Banner was a guy I wouldn't want to meet. He was kind of an annoying asshole, with nothing really interesting to say. The Banner in the comics is one of the smartest guys on the planet, and he's got a lot less emotional baggage out in the open than that movie version. He was never a dick, though, and the Ang Lee version most certainly was.

And besides, Hulk dogs are just fucking stupid, and Absorbing Dad was about as lame as it gets for a villain.

If that trailer is accurate, I'm predicting a very tacky, very weak film. All nuance of the Ang Lee film is gone so that we can see big CGI monsters have a punching contest. ("Who will punch harder!?! Oh, the drama!!!") Please note that I'm not saying that Ang Lee's film was perfect, or that one Hulk necessarily has to be better than the other, or that HULK's detractors don't sometimes have valid points. For my money, though, the film has staying power because it has (to my mind) depth of character.

Here ... I just can't help being skeptical. For instance, this Thunderbolt may actually be closer to one of the comic book manifestations of the character, but his portrayal here just strikes me as lame and two-dimensional. Another stock "hard-ass" military guy. And what the hell was up with Blonsky walking up to the Hulk with his "that all you got?" line? It at least LOOKS like all balls, no brains so far. (I'd go a step further and say it looks tailor-made for those looking for the "Bad-Ass Brand of Instant-Film" despite being completely unearned and utterly nonsensical to the story. Just sayin' ... Blonsky better have a damn good reason for playing Rambo if the film's not going to degenerate into self-parody.)

I'll bet that this will generate a response here (and I freely admit that I haven't seen the film yet, so it's all conjecture), but what the hell sense does it make to "even up the score" ... against a guy who's apparently NOT bothering anyone unless provoked ... by creating a SECOND monster?

"General, there's a loose nuke out there somewhere that we need to track down before it explodes."

"Hmmmmm ... I know, let's release a SECOND loose nuke so that the two bombs neutralize one another. Problem solved."

"Um, General, that ... um ..."

"JUST DO IT! In fact, send THREE more loose nukes out there ... that way the first loose nuke will be outnumbered."

I'll be happy to be proved wrong. But in the meantime, I'm holding out my Summer Hope for TDK.

by hansello

Not a big reader of the comics etc. but I remember storylines that established a 2nd version of the Hulk that was calmer, more inteligent and Grey. The green one still emerged, but Banner could sometimes control the change.

It would be cool if this was touched upon in the movie.

Also, can we have a Green, amazonian She-Hulk please embracing her 'gamma-like' powers and defending Banner in court. Thanks.

As for Ang Lee's vision, who cares if it was thought provoking... it was boring for kids. Whether we 30 something geeks like it or not, super hero movies are family films. Hopefully The Incredible Hulk will go a long way to turning around a failed franchise.

Finally, I liked the TV Theme at the end.

Look at us cynical lil’ cry-baby Fanboys. Each one of us building these little walls of protection to shield us from the pain of yet another mediocre Hulk movie. These Talk-back blurbs of diminished expectations are really just reverse psychological acts of desperation… We really do want this to be the ultimate kick-ass Hulk Smash movie. But yet at the same time we seek oscar caliber performances, writing that is sharp and poignant (with some bonafide in-depth character development). Oh yea plus it’s mandatory that it be true-to-the-comics, all 40 plus years of it. We want all of that and we need it to flow (without it feeling forced) in just under 2 hours! Don’t tell me it can’t be done mother fucker! This is gawd-damned America! Kennedy promised a man on the moon by the end of the 60’s, and by damn we put us a man on the frigg’n moon (we, meaning former ex-nazi rocket scientists of course). You know that you'll be there opening day, just like me. End up saying how cool it is upon leaving the theater, then a week later laminate on how much better it coulda been if only (insert infinite number of possibilities here__.) I really like the idea of how Marvel films are approaching these new properties, it's sounding like they're laying the foundations for a larger universe by inter-connecting these films, just like in those funny books they come from. Now take notice Hollywood producer man.
Marketing?
by Larry Sellers
Apr 30th, 2008
06:49:41 PM
If only this movie didn't have a poorly received predecessor to surpass. I don't understand the lack of marketing for this thing. They went balls out for the first one but it's been relatively quiet on this. The action looks cooler, but we kind of saw this story in the first. Ross chasing Hulk, except they've added a monster this time. There was one last time it was just tacked on and made no fucking sense. I understand they have to reset the pieces in a more presentable fashion to wash out the taste of the first (which I actually liked, but generally speaking...) but I wished they'd gone with a different kind of story. I hold Zak Penn accountable for all of these comic book based flicks that had the potential to be special. The Brett Ratner of screenwriting. Of course I'll see Hulk, but I'm not expecting to be blown away.

I freeze-framed all the images of the Hulk in the trailer, and it literally looks as if a DIFFERENT animator rendered his face each time. There's absolutely NO CONSISTENCY WHATSOEVER in his features. Couldn't put my finger on it at first, but I think that's the MAIN reason why he still looks dodgy at best. That, and the rubbery muscles are still unconvincing.
