Xiphos sums the attitude up well. Life is painful with clenched up ANYTHING. Relax people. Take intent into the situation for cripes sake. Nothing racist was intended in the use of term. ANY and all words can be used to insult based on intent. Be hard to communicate if we looked for insults in everything.

At some point you have to stand firm and say that you can't constantly redefine and transmute vocabulary solely to coddle overly-sensitive attention whores.

There is nothing wrong with exploring what you know best, because commonality can be experienced even when the gulf seems vast, as long as the audience is open to recieving it.

Seriously, this is either outright stupidity or (even worse) it's political correctness once again rearing its ugly head over a word, a phrase, an image or whatever else that someone wants to demonize (relative to its REAL context) all because boo-fucking-hoo it hurts their feelings. Worse, because someone MISTAKENLY thinks the word, the phrase, the image or whatever else you want to pick is somehow a mean-spirited insult that was specifically directed at them.

For crying out loud, this reminds of me the immeidate post-9/11 period where some people were ridiculous enough to actually advocate that Hollywood should now go in and take OUT the World Trade Center Towers from films...I mean literally go in and digitally remove them even from old films...because seeing the Towers would be too emotionally hard. So we should just wipe them from memory completely so that we never took the risk of upsetting anyone, even if it was only one person.

And you know what I say to that, not only as a born and bred New Yorker but also as an average, politically moderate, college educated person? FUCK YOU. History is HISTORY and some aspects of it are nice and clean...and yes, some are quite messy. But I swear political correctness is one of the things I MOST fucking hate in the entire world since it seeks to retroactively rewrite and remove things from history, which last I checked is what EDUCATED and THINKING people want to look back upon and learn from.

Africa is the Dark Continent. The phrase has a historical context. "Historical" as in HISTORY...as in the phrase has looooooong been out there for a reason. Grow up, learn a thing or two, and fucking learn to deal with it.
