Have Full reviews of Iron Man - although I'd rather hear what Harry and Mori have to say about it. The last few stories on this site have been absolutely dreadful, cheerleaders? those date/epic movie guys, now this? - Come on AICN there's bigger and better stories to be had - you're getting scooped constantly these days - tis a shame.

The trailers for this movie promise to SHOCK YOU!

But I almost feel sorry for the moviemakers who are banking on shock value, as this is almost impossible these days. Early Farrelly Bros., South Park, random & bizarre YouTube videos, and a million other forms of entertainment have been irreverent about everything there is to be irreverent about. Pretty soon, comedy writers will have to worry more about being clever than being taboo. From Moriarty's review, there are moments in this film that are more than just AREN'T YOU SHOCKED WE JUST DID THAT? But I think the most you can do nowadays is get a laugh at the people you imagine *would* be offended, and most of them would be over the age of 60. The days of "I can't believe they showed that!" are drawing to a close.
Pacing....

I think its that irregular pace and the real lack of 'letting scenes breathe' that makes these flicks work with their target audience. It's reminiscent of Family Guy or the various Adult Swim humor. Quick changes and random ridiculous humor that pushes the envelope of what we find offensive or funny. You think about the two 20 something guys baked as hell watching the movie through squinty stoney eyes; they just want to laugh for an hour and a half without thinking to much in the moment. Maybe later after a bong rip, they'll try to relive and expand on the relevance or meaning behind the use of race and politics... or they'll try to recreate the cyclops' noises and giggle through an oreo filled mouth. Either way, H&K succeeds with its core.
This, a Review?

Usually it's cursory to at least expound an iota as to what the film is about, rather than telling us how the prequel opened. Seriously Mori, can you imagine this for a review of Empire Strikes Back?

"I was a big fan of the way the first film started, with a typical Big-dicked Spaceship battle, and then we follow two unlucky schmoe droids, then suddenly bang, there gone and we follow them with the douchebag space-war left behind."

Then nothing else about the plot, save I think it was a real medical droid they used in the films Rebel Fleet ending scene.

Don't get me wrong I don't want to be messing with your proses but it bugs me, and I'ts a slow day at work.

if you enjoy stoner movies, its hard not to enjoy Harold & Kumar. but if you dont get Cheech & Chong, don't know who Craig Jones or Smokie are, you will not understand what people enjoy about Harold & Kumar.

didn't find it hilarious. found H & K really funny, mainly because I didn't watch it with any preconceptions. honestly the first one was funnier then superbad, or Knocked Up, both movies which were hyped up as the funniest things ever, only to find that *meh* it really wasn't that funny. the great thing about this movie? It's lead characters weren't caucasian , yeah thats' right, ordinary guys who weren't white. what a fucking revelation! funny as fuck and I'll watch it

I dont know, I never though Friday was funny. I watched it and something about it just irritated me. The second one irritated me even more. However, I may be th only person that liked the third one. I'm weird about Stoner movies though. I hate the original H&K when I saw it but now everytime I think about a line or scene I'm laughing. Same with Big Lebowski..hate it when I first saw it, but now everytime its on I watch it and laugh and I even quote it from time to time. Maybe I'm a post-viewing fan of stoner flicks.

"15 minutes in this movie where I was mildly amused" FAIL. Just reading that sentence made me think . FAIL. Sure, you watched it, you didn't like it, or didn't get it, fair enough, it's your opinion. if you thought the first one had 15 minutes of mild hilarity, odds on, the sequel was never gonna float your boat. since i thought the first one was hilarious, odds on, I'll find the this one just as good. Thank you, come again.

Origin stories often feel like feature-length pilots for intended franchises.

And where’s it written that comic-book franchises need origin stories? It didn’t hurt Indiana Jones, Connery’s James Bond or Captain Jack Sparrow that they arrived on our screens fully formed. ----------------------------

That sums up exactly why I hate Batman Begins and Xmen, and why I'm somewhat tired of these new hero films. I'll let Iron Man get away with it, but this is the last one.

The problem isn’t so much that origin stories themselves are inherently uncompelling, rather that by the film’s midpoint they’ve run out of steam, leaving the latter half, and usually a rushed final act, to summon up and dispense with a token threat, the hero’s mettle duly tested------ very nicely summed up -

a sensible balanced piece of criticism from Empire- and they didn't overrate it. Mind you, that means going by their standards it's worse than the star wars prequels, ID4 and Superman Returns.

...neither Cho or Penn smoke weed. Kind of like NPH isn't really into girls, but has a lot of fun with Barney on HIMYM and in these movies. If it was only "get some stoners and let's roll film", there would a Oscar Category for "Best Portrayal Of A Stoner By A Stoner". That means these guys are *GASP* ACTING ! ! ! And pretty well, I'd say. These films are like Bill & Ted...not gonna change your life, but fun to watch the goofiness. Heck, every time I see a Krispy Kreme, I think "Savory Crullers!"

Congrats on completely missing the point. NPH's character in H&K is hilarious because he's the exact opposite of who he is in real life. Him being gay in real life only makes it funnier. No need to have someone in the film shout, "BUT I THOUGHT YOU WERE GAY!!??".

...on this particular topic, but I'm having a hard time thinking of a frat-boy comedy such as Moriarty is setting up as a straw man here. I could imagine, say, the original BACHELOR PARTY starting off that way, but what's the big-screen modern equivalent where our heroes would be thoughtless frat guys? Maybe BACHELOR PARTY 2, but that was straight-to-video.

There were precisely three parts that made me laugh. Neil Patrick Harris's hallucination, Ed Helm's incompetent interpreter, and Harold's ridiculous getup in college. I have seen so many goth/technopunk....whatever asian kids that dressed just like that and somehow he managed to nail that dazed/depressed expression. I about fell out of my chair for that one. Now if only I didn't have to sit through the rest of the movie for those three jokes.

AICN has given up on spoiler warnings

it's sad, because I used to love how careful they were about it. now Mori can write "And I’m almost sure that’s real weed they’re smoking during the Amsterdam conclusion of the film." and it doesn't even warrant a spoiler box on the review, let alone a warning IN the review.

I mean I know it's a dumb, silly movie, but come on. you don't have to give away the ending because you thought it sucked, Mori. why not write, "And in one particular scene, I'm sure it was real weed they were smoking..."?

oh well, I guess it doesn't matter. I just like avoiding spoilers, and you guys used to care about it as well. sucks for me, but I still love AICN.

This movie is fucking stupid. But being Asian, this movie that appeals to MY stupidity. So I loved it. Remember how funny Long Duk Dong was in Sixteen Candles? I didn't. I was seething when I saw that shit for the first time. Finally, there's a movie that acknowledges the Asian American perception of Western Culture ... even if only fleetingly. It's pretty easy to dismiss Harold and Kumar as base stoner comedies (and let's get real, you'd be 90% right). But there's something subersive going on in these films. In most comedies of late, the source of misunderstanding and confusion which leads to various "wacky scenarios" is primarily due to characters being gross, unrealistic caricatures -- they're either dunces or potheads or socially retarded man-children. It's not like Harold and Kumar are over-the-top assholes, or funky-fresh ghetto superstars trying to funkify their uptight White surroundings. They aren't Queen Latifah or Will Ferrell. They're actually very ordinary, intelligent, Anglo-sized young men. The obstacles they face don't come from being jerks, but from being Not-White. When I watched this movie, I thought, "Yes, this is stupid," but there are moments when they affirm, capture and find humor in what it feels like to be Asian in America: No matter how well you assimilate, you'll always be on the outside looking in. And I kind of appreciate that. I prefer these movies over Joy Luck Club or Better Luck Tomorrow, that's for sure.
