Craig Ferguson It Is Then...

04:12:24 PM
You should be watching him NOW anyway... He's become funnier while Conan's become very predictable. (And to continue the theme... Fallon sucks in a slow-minded frat brother kind of way... Which should make the move to Ferguson extremely PAINLESS.)
Oh yeah. That's gonna get ratings.

Because we all know how well his movies do. And his comedy albums sell out to such high praise. (p) Whats that? Tina Fey likes him? Oh, well then you know he must be good. Because it's not like Tina Fey is a one trick pony put on the air to keep a small group of whiners happy. Everybody loves her political commentary on SNL. She did such wonders for that show. (p) We all look forward to Fallen on Late Night, much like we did with Katie Curic on CBS news. Besides, it's not like late night talk shows are very competitive.

Jimmy Fallon is greatly reviled, but I think he's funnier than he gets credit for. Everybody should just be thanking their lucky stars that Carson Daly's not getting the gig. He is the WORST. (It was Chris Kattan in Monkeybone, by the way.)

i don't know why, I find Kattan funny and Fallon not but I continually get them mixed up

that really has nothing to do with the subject at hand because I don't think Kattan would do well at a talk show

maybe, just maybe, Fallon will surprise us and actually be good

my suggestion though would be to lay off the cutsie sketches that made Conan, Letterman, et al, popular and go back to a more guest centric focus, I think that (plus his dry humor) really makes Ferguson work and I'd like to see someone else approach it, go back to a Carson style where sometimes you get a really funny sketch but you're always going to get good interviews

Does anyone still remember Jimmy Fallon? When they hired Conan he was pretty unknown - going from writer to fronting an entire show - and had to prove himself. Fallon has already had an inexplicable run on SNL that amounted to a crash and burn movie career. Like many of his contemporaries from that era of SNL he's hit a wall. They're turning Late Night into the new Chevy Chase or Martin Short show. Personally I would love to see Joel McHale take a stab at it. Everything I've seen from him tells me he could handle all aspects of it. Fallon would make him look like Johnny Carson.

Man, did NBC just shoot themselves in the foot or what? I'll be honest - I don't DISlike Conan, but I rarely watched him anyway. Fallon, however, I'll avoid like the plague. He has no talent whatsoever, and can't deliver a joke without smiling to save his life. I can't believe he actually got this gig. What a waste of money for NBC.

He should have to sign his SNL paychecks over to Sandler and Mike Meyers for all the bits he's stolen. He's literally the worst person ever on that show - a giggling idiot that ruined EVERY sketch he was ever in with his stupid laughing. I've been watching SNL since I was 5 and he's worse than Anthony Michael Hall was - worse than Robert Downey Jr. was. He'll be out in a year - guaranteed. Who they should get is AMY SEDARIS!!!!! She's nuts and hilarious.

interesting choice, I have to ask though have we had a successful female talkshow host? I'm not saying it can't be done, but are they going to be willing to risk the chance, a (relativly) unknowen female comic on a late night talkshow

Yeah, people were doubtful of Conan at first, and he started poorly, but he also wrote AMAZING episodes of The Simpsons and SNL. He was funny. What has Jimmy Fallon done? Not so much. Bad movies. And he was mediocre on SNL. Some funny stuff, some bland stuff, some flat-out awful stuff. And he really doesn't have a good comic personality. Most of his fans are girls who think he's cute. He should be taking over for Carson, not for Conan. I mean, come on. There aren't any other more talented improvisers or comedians out there?

2010: Jeff Zucker promoted out of job

Apr 24th, 2008
06:18:51 PM
NEW YORK, 2010 -- General Electric has promoted Jeff Zucker, President and Chief Executive Officer, NBC Universal, to Senior Vice President, GE, effectively immediately. Although technically a promotion, GE executives have been unhappy with ratings from the Tonight Show With Conan O'Brien and Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. Since jumping to Fox, Jay Leno has propelled the new Fox Late Night programming into first place, along with the Sarah Silverman Hour and Bill Clinton's Late Night Snack.

Yeah terrible choice by NBC. I thought I recalled Fallon sitting in for Letterman one time when Letterman was ill or something. My goodness was Fallon bad. The guy just sat there shaking thoughout the show - enough nervous energy to power NYC for a year. Daly is terrible too. He gets to watch Seacrest on what was supposed to be his career path. How about some inspired choices for late night hosts, NBC? Makes me almost long for the Magic Johnson days.

I have finally stopped watching Conan. The strike shows were entertaining, but seeing the writers come back was kind of the final nail in the coffin for me. His schtick is over. It's so tired. Honestly, when I try to watch now, I get annoyed at his constant riffing and same old go-to lines. I couldn't imagine myself saying this before, but he is NOT going to last as the Tonight Show host. It'll be over within a year or two. NBC will see their mistake and try to snag either Stewart or Colbert if they're still available. Those two are as sharp as ever and their shows aren't the predictable tripe that Conan's has become. Sad, but true.

Conan will be around for a bit
by Bass Ackwards
Apr 24th, 2008
08:47:33 PM
Excepting a true, complete ratings blackout, NBC will stick by him for a while, just the nature of the late night game, NBC knows that they have to have a personality to maintain a presence in late night, and they get that by building it into a timeslot, swapping hosts hoping for temporary spikes won't do it. Its why Jay & Conan are where there are today, neither of those started out as hits. Its also why Snyder was allowed to stick around for as long as he wanted, despite pretty dull ratings. Its an odd lil conundrum, network television has zero patience for any of its other programing, but they'll sit back and be patient with their late night guys (side affect = Carson Daly).

There were 4 auditioning for the Late Late Show
by Bass Ackwards
Apr 24th, 2008

Amy wasn't one of them, it was Ferguson, Michael Ian Black, Damien Fahey, & DL Hughley. Dave loves Amy, so if they had really wanted her I'm sure she would have been given a shot at the audition process (I actually bet Dave would have given it to her outright if she wanted it, cause he really does seem to be a pretty big fan of hers), so either it was never offered or it was offered and she declined. But I do agree with everyone that'd she'd be terrific at it.

by wilsonfisk89
Apr 24th, 2008

Conan has lost his charm over the past couple years. He is often awkwardly tense, in a passive aggressive sort of way, and he always, always has to make some crack to the band how he is the boss, and they hate him, etc. It gets old, and comes off as passive aggressive bitchiness. Maybe he is insecure behind the terrible, bland writing lately, but I miss the old Andy Richter era Conan.

When he's "on" Craig is the best interviewer on late night. Letterman only reserves those days now for the uber-important non-celebrity guests.

Thing with Conan was, in front of the cameras, he was an unknown. We all know Jimmy Fallon, I could barely stand him on SNL, and any talk show longer than 10 minutes is gong to drive people to mayhem. Maybe M. Night Shyamalam got his idea for "The Happening" from what would happen if this Fallon thing actually aired.

Ferguson's interviews are the best to watch. He is much more relaxed with his guests than Leno, Letterman, or Conan. I could do with one or two fewer Prince Charles skits, but at least they are always new and he doesn't rerun them (unless the episode is a rerun, obviously).

What was Chris Kattan busy? And yea, Ferguson really seems to have fun with his guests, and not at their expense, usually at his own. Maybe it's because he's still relatively new, and the daily grind hasn't worn him down. He has a friendly and curious rapport that the other guys don't seem to have. And his monologues aren't just "lets make jokes at the headline" stuff, but really seem stream of consciousness.

The comedy world has been in decline for some time. What passes for a 'comic' and for humor these days is a joke. Conan is a hard act to follow no matter who you chose, the new guys gonna get shit no matter what, but Fallon is deserving of the hate. She's a fucking gargoyle with enough horrific cosmetic surgery to make Charles Manson need to sleep with the light on. I hardly think America would want her to be the last thing they see before bedtime.

Besides, at the time, her biggest joke was "Can we talk?" and she pretty much ran that into the ground.

I'm not saying Leno was a good choice, either, but she would have been a terrible choice.

Jimmy Fallon makes her look like the female Richard Pryor, though. Fallon is about the least funny motherfucker on the planet. He's like the real-world version of Krusty the Klown, only with worse jokes and less of a following.

If they wanted an SNL alumni, there's a whole laundry list of people who would be better than Jimmy fucking Fallon.

Is NBC trying to pull in that fratboy demographic? Couldn't they go for anyone else? I mean jeez-- the only way they could have made a worse choice is if they'd picked Ryan Seacrest and Horatio Sans.

They could put an ELIZA program into an ASIMO robot, and it would have a more interesting personality than Jimmy fucking Fallon.

For a real comedian, having to try and give 100% funny every single god damn night will wear out every shred of a sense of humor you have in a few years. When Conan first started it was absolutely brilliant. Irreverent, esoteric, self-deprecating, original, wild; now he's just treading water. Letterman just looks tired, bored, and/or slightly disoriented. And Leno, well, he was never really funny, so I hope he gives thanks to Fortuna every morning that the improbable vagaries of chance have made him undeservedly and obscenely rich. But who knows, since Fallon has never been anything more than a giggling, unprofessional, stage-frightened formula impersonator, maybe he will somehow buck the trend and gradually develop the funny. . . And maybe my brilliant internet posts will catch the eye of publishing talent scouts and I'll be writing for the New Yorker this time next month.

I still watch it on youtube even today. I have not seen any of his movies. LENO seems bitter about the change. He has mentioned it on his show many times. I like LENO he is a car guy. I pick Bill Hader to take CONAN'S empty spot. He does killer Al Pacino and Christopher Walken impressions. Be happy that Ashton Krucher or Topher Grace is not getting the gigs. Rivers with Letterman. From everything I have heard, the Tonight Show gig was between Leno & Letterman. Letterman was Carson's choice to replace him but the NBC execs didn't think his act would work at 11:30 and wanted options. They liked Leno who had had good ratings when he had filled in for Carson. NBC did not have a contract with Leno and were worried he might be scooped up by CBS or another network for a late night show to compete with whoever replaced Carson. So they made a secret deal with Leno which promised him the Tonight Show when Johnny Carson retired. The deal was leaked and Letterman made his own deal with CBS and the rest is history.

As for Joan Rivers, I know at one time she was the the popular choice to take over for Carson, but that would have been 5 or 10 years earlier. Her name may have been thrown around when Carson was on his way out, but, as I remember it, the only real contenders to take over the Tonight Show at that time were Leno & Letterman.

"Is NBC trying to pull in that fratboy demographic? Couldn't they go for anyone else?" Good point, ZeroCorpse. I'm no fan of Dane Cook, but if you want that audience, I think he would be a much better choice.

It's too late for Fallon. The show might work at first but it won't have legs and he'll quit. Leno's going to go to ABC. Fox wants him and Spike to gao after - but it won't happen. Spike failed - he was supposed to be a parody and it didn't work out. Hopefully the real winner in all this will be the true late night king - Letterman.
