of projects that Ang Lee has taken on? (Western-ish) Ride with the Devil, (superhero) Hulk, (sex drama) The Ice Storm, (women-with-big-hats period piece) Sense and Sensibility, etc., and now he adds a hippie movie. Say what you want about him, but when it comes to being unafraid to tackle different genres, he's more impressive than any filmmaker I can think of. (Off the top of my head, at least.) We already know the style and tone of the next movie by the dozen or so "auteur" directors that seem to have fun in the same playground over and over again.

even those Hulk poodles and sodomizing cowboys. If you haven't seen Brokeback Mountain you should. He gets the sodomy over will early so that the audience can deal with their feelings of ickiness and then he focuses solely on the emotional relationship for the rest of the film. Should have won best picture.

I remember hearing about Brokeback Mountain months before it came out and thinking, even if the film is good no one is going to see a film about gay cowboys. How wrong I was. The film was an indie hit. It was also very good.

The stage is hard to replicate, not to mention everyone's clothes, hair, and stuff. Looks like fun, but NOT a project for Ang Lee. This is the stuff Zemeckis would do 20 years ago (sounds like "I Wanna Hold your Hand", underapreciated Zemeckis gem).

Ang Lee's films are like the proper old-school Hollywood shit - complex, layered stories that you can really get your teeth into, that give you loads to think about, and that massively repay repeat viewing. And they're brilliantly entertaining. I look forward to one of his films more than anyone else's, and I think Lust, Caution was ever better than There Will Be Blood or No Country For Old Men.

and I asked him "Mister, tell where are you going?" this he told me...

Said I'm goin up to Yasgir's farm gonna join in a rock and roll band, got to get back to the land and set my soul free.

We are stardust, we are golden. We are billion year old carbon, and we've got to get ourselves back to the Garden.

Well then can I walk beside you, I have come to lose my smile, and I feel myself a cog in something turning. And maybe it's the time of year, and maybe it's the time of man, and I don't know who I am but life is for learning'.

We are stardust, we are golden. We are billion year old carbon, and we've got to get ourselves back to the Garden.

By the time we got to Woodstock we here half a million strong, and everywhere was a song and a celebration. And I dreamed I saw the bomber death planes riding shotgun in the sky turning into butterflies above our nation.

We are stardust, we are golden. We are caught in the Devil's bargain. And we've got to get ourselves back to the Garden.

rbatty024, i believe you when you say Brokeback is a good movie. I considered seeing it, Ang is a fine director, the actors are good, there's some pretty ladies, and the landscape should be spectacular. But why watch a movie about a subject that produces, as you say, ickiness? I tend to leave movies about human trafficking, child abuse and similar alone, even if they be good. Reading the news about those themes is more than enough. Im not judging the sexual deviates, just avoiding ickiness.

ickiness?

I'm not trying to throw any bombs around here, but I find something deeply troubling about comparing the content of Brokeback Mountain to "human trafficking, child abuse and similar." And calling something "sexual[ly] deviant" IS judging it. There's nothing wrong with judging - I certainly "judge" child abuse as an unmitigated wrong. But if you're incapable of distinguishing between consenting adults sharing a genuine affection for one another and chlid abuse or human trafficking (!), then ... well, I would judge you very poorly. There's a deep lack of good sense about you. (Good lord, what else is "icky"? Childbirth? Defecating? Brussel sprouts? Are we all five years old?!?)

Ang Lee did us all a favor by putting on screen what millions of consenting adults do (hetero and homo) around the world without apologizing for it. If that's icky, then all of human sexuality is icky.

Male on male sodomy? Yeah, that shit is gross. I don't hate homosexuals, but I surely don't want to see a film depicting their deviant sexual practices. Also, yes, defacation is also something I'd rather not see depicted on the big screen. I'm such a weirdo!
In defense of my use of the word "ickiness"
by rbatty024
Apr 23rd, 2008
12:00:18 PM
I was referring to the potential reaction from the audience not the actual act of sodomy.

I'll take you at your word that you weren't judging anyone and I suppose it's fair enough if you prefer not to watch the film (there's almost an inexhaustible source of great non-contemporary cinema anyway). As for our different reactions to Brokeback, I'll just chalk it up to probably being raised in a different time and place.

I have no problem 'judging' homophobes
by oisin5199
Apr 23rd, 2008
12:16:35 PM
Brokeback Mountain was NOT about sodomy, but about an intense and tragic love affair that had to be repressed because of the time and the society. If the only reason you don't want to see one of the most amazing dramas of this decade is because of the possible 'ickiness' (a word which itself connotes a 'fear of') of gay sex, then you're just a straight up homophobe.

I wouldn't say anybody has to watch anything. (And I'm not gay, Pipergates, so don't mind minding - I just thought Brokeback was a great movie and not a bunch of perverts doing sicko stuff comparable to child abuse, as suggested on this board. Lordy, how many people who wouldn't see "sick" stuff like Brokeback have no problems seeing a man's intestines torn out him by decomposing zombies?)

As for "yeah that shit is gross" ... okay, good for you, Optimus. I didn't mean to say that we should all want to watch defecation on screen. I was saying if you are going to compare a common, consenual act between adults to child abuse and label them both "icky," then I think you have bizarre judgment. And if you want to call a large segment of the population "deviants" who do "gross shit," then I hope you can handle the horrors of being called a freakin' child on an AICN talkback. Not that I hate you or anything. But you're a child who slurs a large segment of the population and then gets defensive when someone calls you names.

I always thought it was "We are stardust, we are golden. We are caught in the Devil's bargain" rather than "billion year old carbon," and likewise I'm pretty sure it's "can I walk beside you, I have come to lose the smog" (see, it rhymes with "cog"). Am I wrong after all these years? Did you do this from memory or find it online? Not that seeing anything online makes it correct.

..Brokeback Mountain on the other hand I did'nt get. Lemme get this straight; (no pun intended) Two ranchhandlers sleep in a tent and the next second, Jake is getting cornholed?!?Uh, sorry but that does not make for a love story even with tripe dialog like "i wish I knew how to quit you"..however it made for good laughs and plenty of spoofs.

Crash was far superior and deserving of the Oscar nod.Brokeback was a ok movie(storywise) but not the masterpiece love story some hype it out to be.

Sorry, just had to say it for ol' Chuck, ya know? You watch, they'll make the hippies way too hairstyled and clean-looking. They never get that never-bathing part right.

Now, you might say that this is a perfect project for Ang Lee, the most overrated director of our times recreates the most overrated concert of all time. I know, I know, his movies are gorgeous and deep, but personally, they leave me as cold as a crouching tiger sodomizing a cowboy hulk poodle in an ice storm.

...a pretty fascinating director. I really liked his take on The Incredible Hulk (unlike most people I know, who wanted two hours of "Hulk Smash" as opposed to an actual storyline.) Never saw Brokeback Mountain, but the theme of the movie itself proves that Lee's definitely into pushing himself into as many different directions as he can with each passing project - creating challenges for himself - which, in my opinion, is highly respectable. As for Woodstock... great idea. Hopefully he brings us inside the concert so we can follow a certain character's experiences. I'd love to see the musicians represented by their music. Maybe even blurring their on-stage likenesses.

I agree about The Ice Storm, which I consider to be the least of Lee's films, yet still interesting. I can actually stomach Kevin Kline in that one. For me, Eat Drink and Brokeback are his jewels because he accomplished some truly gut-wrenching moments (hospital scene and final frames in Eat Drink) in both movies with no sentimentality. Just deep portrayals of some very compelling characters.

According to a 2002 CDC (center for disease control) survey. Especially guilty are all those hot purity-pledge bitches trying to save their hymens. Seeing as there are at least 10 to 20 times as many straights as gays, and therefore by default many more of us fucking ass, I find it pretty weird to label sodomy strange or sick, no matter who is doing it. But at least you douches are honest about letting everyone know you have never touched a woman, and are so insecure about your own sexuality that even the mere suggestion of anal in a fictional story (that didn't really have anything to do with sex) is enough to make your spine turn to ice. And I hate to break it to you but there is one important piece of information missing from this AICN update...the lead character in this woodstock film is a gay man. Guess you won't be watching this one either! That's ok, you won't be missed.
