You pay the same amount (or more) for fewer channels. Besides, if you're conservative, then why do you think Congress should be able to tell a company what packages they should provide?

McCain is the main person in Congress who actually speaks out about a la carte cable. That's why I used his name. Way to try and turn this into a partisan political slapfight, douchebag.

Most movies come out on DVD 4-6months after it's threatrical release. In the case of cable tv, it's a fucking year wait. That and cable TV is too repetitive.
Why pay-per-view or Netflix??

you suggest if its more than $2 a month people will just do pay-per-view. last i checked, PPV was more than $2 per MOVIE, much less an entire month's worth of 24-hour programming.

are they saying they're going to be showing first-run movies also? cause if thats the way movie watching is going, im okay with that.

i used to think i would never stop going to the arcade, but when the home gaming systems got better and more involved, i had no problem staying at home to play, and challenging friends online.

As good home theatre set ups get more and more affordable, im all for watching first runs in my living room, without some asshole sitting next to be talking on his cell phone.

(unless that asshole is my friend, then ill tell him to shut the fuck up because i dont want to pause the movie so he can tell his girlfriend what time he's going to see her..fucking cell phones ruining the movie experience! but hey thats progress, and you cant stop it now..HOWS THAT FOR A TANGENT!)
mullymt, Liar! Liar! C-Band days.
by EvilWizardGlick
Apr 21st, 2008
07:03:38 PM
Bullshit!

Way back when C-band providers had both packages and ala-carte. While not every channel was included in the ala-carte selection, the choices in now way made one suffer. And you saved on them.

Why should I pay for a million sports channels I never watch? Why should I pay for news channels I never watch?

Frankly I would rather pay for JUST the programming I watch and not an assload of reality tv or pop garbage.

HD is being throttled on cable and sat.

For those who have not followed it first sats were given the right to throttle had bandwidth. Yep, downconvert.

Now it is discovered that cable providers are doing the same thing.

Yet my bill still goes up.

Ouch.

Showtime might be done without those studios to supply it with movies. Seriously, what new movies can they play now? Maybe they can strike deals with Full Moon and Troma.

They don't have bandwith for the channels they have now
by INWOsuxRED

I hope the loss of movies just encourages Showtime to expand original programming. I usually see most movies in theaters if I want to see them at all. Pay channels are more about original shows than anything else. No way is any channel getting me to pay stricktly for movies. The idea that you could launch a new channel based soley on movies from a single studio and get people to pay for it is pretty lame. If I do watch a movie on a pay channel, I hardly even notice which channel it is, so I doubt I will notice if I watch less movies on Showtime.

Way to stand out: Movies on Cable same day as DVD release.
by ruven76

They own the movies, they own the rights, its up to them if they want to enter into a distribution contract with the cable channels.
Since they have their own channel now, they can in effect run the movies whenever they please.
So why not show the movies when they come out on DVD, sure it might eat a little bit of their DVD money, but so does piracy, this would be away around that.
Well partially of course.
And besides, most people who buy DVDs dont buy them because they want to watch the movie, they buy them because they like to collect the movies, or rewatch them over and over again or for the extras.... or whatever.

If you just want to watch a movie that you didnt catch in theaters you normally just rent it.
I mean if you REALLY wanted to see it enough to drop down 20 bucks, but probably would have gone to the theater.

So folks that buy DVD are going to buy DVD regardless of the movie being released on pay cable at the same time.

What you do is give yourself a huge leg up on HBO/Showtime, while giving them a big FU in the process.
Wait wait wait!

The channel you want to buy might not be available anymore under this system, if there aren't enought subscribers to it. Like Bravo? A&E, SciFi? Kiss 'em goodbye under a la carte. Package deals are what enable providers to have such a huge selection, you have to take the good with the bad. Get Comedy Central, but you also have to take ShopNBC. Death and taxes, people.
