i was in denial for a long time, but its painful to watch ep1-2-3. really painful. I watched star wars and empire and jedi again recently..great fucking films..even jedi. they had depth and a realism to them. its hard to get through te new ones without knowing just how much of a wasted opportunity they are and how much george lucas is not the great filmmaker we once thought he was. bottom line: he's a shitty artist. and these clone war things look pretty weak. sorry..i still need to vent. star wars was something near and dear to me and its so fucking tainted now. sad.

yeah yeah yeah im still venting, but ep 4-5-6 are #11,8,106 respectively...(or something like that)....1-2-3 aren't even on the radar. it's such a spectacular fall off! i cant think of anything that comes close to such a drop in quality as the star wars films. to go from 3 of the greatest movies ever to 3 of the most embarassing. the only thing i can compare it to is perhaps godfather 3...but even that, with pacino forgetting who michael corleone is and playing him like another loud pacino character, is a way better film. ok im done...maybe. still pissed off.

The only way I'll ever see this or any other new Star Wars product is if they're on "Spike" at 2am and I'm good and drunk. I forced myself to watch parts of 1-3 as they ran for free recently and they only get worse with time. George destroyed any chance of these movies being good when he forced the the movies to all take place individually over a few days like 4-6 did. It worked with 4-6 but 1-3 were telling a much bigger story. We should have been able to see Anakin go from a kid to an adult in 1. 2 should have been the Clone Wars and 3, we should have finally been able to see a young Vader at the height of his powers stalking and killing Jedi's...but all we got was NOOOOOOOOO. Please George, let us keep some good memories and you keep some dignity.

... to see fanboys still getting so hot under the collar over those silly business. As the father of a 5-yr-old who's crazy about all things STAR WARS, I find my own ire over the new trilogy diminishing all the time, replaced by shared enthusiasm for the myth and lore of an epic saga about beasties and space battles. STAR WARS is still for children, and seeing it through my child's eyes has healed all the wounds. What the hell, guys -- it's sappy space melodrama. It's not the end of the world. Save the histrionics for our fat, evil government, not a bunch of fat, greedy moviemakers.

The love for Genndy's Clone Wars has always been pretty puzzling to me. Those little Clone Wars stories are some of the most uninteresting little things I have seen, with one exception- The fight on Yavin IV between Skywalker and the Sith witch was the closest thing to feeling like an original Star Wars story. But all the battles through that stupid Athens city and on the boring fields were as dull as can be, with some new and really stupid designs. Genndy's art style is so tired and empty, and I don't understand why people get excited about a cartoon style that doesn't require that the artists know how to draw well. Please recognize that Genndy does not seem to know how to draw, Clone Wars certainly does not demonstrate any skill on his part. I admit that the style of these new "The Clone Wars" could be better, but I think they are far more interesting to look at than anything Genndy has ever made. I'm seriously you guys, this is one of those "The emperor has no clothes" kind of deals. Stop admiring Genndy's lack of talent. Everyone was so desperate for an animation style that wasn't Disney, that nowadays the only alternative that anyone could seem to come up with is to have a style that involved no drawing ability at all. Get over that- the style sucks. At least this computer animated adaptation has some level of depth. It sure is not ugly.

Or whenever the hell the special editions came out? The Phantom Menace was on TV the other night, and I caught parts of it - I can't believe a Star Wars movie disgusts me to the point of changing the channel. I know I don't speak for everyone, but I will knowingly insult people for liking Jar-Jar, Anakin yelling "Yipppeee" all the goddamn time, half built threepio, midichlorians, and puppet Yoda, not to mention a storyline that was convoluted and didn't make sense. You prequel lovers are basically the assholes sitting in the corner shaking back and forth telling yourself it's okay whilst clutching your mint condition action figures and collector's plates. I cannot see how any reasonable, sane person can find anything enjoyable about what has happened to Star Wars. It's become like Star Trek to me - cheap, uninteresting garbage.

I never thought the day would come when I'd be sick of Star Wars (or at least, what passes for SW these days). I'll always be a fan of the originals -the unaltered ORIGINAL fucking trilogy. I dont entirely despise the new trilogy, theres a few nuggets in there that are fun and cool, but its still pretty much awful. Anyway, I'm SO FUCKING SICK of any and everything Clone Wars. Give it up already George, the ship sailed a long time ago. The only thing good CW-wise was Gendy's shorts. They were amazing, and the best bit of SW to be out post originals. Sad but true. Anyway, this new thing looks bad. The designs do nothing for me, and apparently they do nothing for everybody else. And whoever said theyre 'ugly' was right on the mark. I dont see SW ever going away, but this might be the entry that gets people to go 'ok give it up already'. Focus on a really mind blowing next gen video game instead. Or, and not that I think you should, but if youre going to do more SW stuff, do something N E W already. Pick another period on the timeline. The CW shit is played out.

I'm curious: Do your kids have a preference -- do they prefer the OT over the Prequels, or the other way around? Or do they seem to not have a preference?

And what about the other major franchises that have shaped their generation (e.g. Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Spider-Man, Pirates Caribbean)? Do they love any of these franchises more than SW?

The kids, influenced by their parents to some degree, largely prefer the OT. My lil' brother hates the new ones, but me repeatedly calling the Prequels the Gay-quels and other not-so-witty things probably has a little to do with it.
Little kids today and Star Wars
by Jim Jam Bongs
Apr 21st, 2008
03:13:46 PM
Like religion and politics, little kids tend to like/dislike the same things that their parents do. They do this because they're seeking approval of their parent. (But as they enter teenage-hood, they do this miraculous thing called rebelling.) I do think that little kids (based on my kid relatives and friends and colleagues' tykes) do like Star Wars -- but it's nowhere near as obsessive as what it meant to our generation (Gen-Xers). Little kids have so many movie and other media to choose from.

That said, I've observed that many little kids appear to dig the Lord of the Rings movies, which I find surprising, followed by Spider-Man. (Harry Potter appeals more to the early teen set right now, as they grew up on the books, but they, like everybody else, appear to be getting tired of the movie series.) The little kids do like Star Wars, but I've noticed it's Return of the Jedi that they seem to like the most, followed by perhaps Episode III.

If this was just some hour long pilot to a 3D TV series on Cartoon Network - looks cool enough, might be worth a watch.

But why are they putting this at the cinema? It doesn't have a cinematic budget clearly. I doubt it will even get that much marketing. Someone just wants to say "There's a new star wars film at the cinema" and watch the money roll in. I don't know who in the general public would want to see this. As far as the trailer was concerned it looks like little dialogue and much droid blasting. But somehow it will probably top the box office....

Seriously, WAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYY shitty. Like a video game cut scene from 8 years ago, shitty. It might not play sso bad on TV as a weekly series, but it falls so short for a theatrical feature. There's a reason that The Ewoks cartoon never hit theaters.

even though when I was a kid I thought it delivered the goods. These days I can see in it what we dislike about the prequels. Now I have six year nephew who until recently wanted to be a Jedi when he grows up, thanks to the prequels. Not only does this not offend me, but I have to admit our light saber battles have opened my eyes to the fact that the prequels are in fact still Star Wars, even if they aren't satisfying to the older Jed Heads. There are a ton of six year olds out there who will dig seeing this in the theater. If you watch this with one of them it should help ease the pain.

Pssst. Hey George. If you really need to fill your spare money bin, I bet you could do it (and possibly fill a third one) if you made another live action trilogy. Oh, and you might think about merchandising, I hear there's good money in that.

Is any one else completely, pukingly sick of the episode II-III droid and ship designs? Watching those stupid ball droids roll, unfold and fire for the 900th time as if they think they're cool and it's still 2002 has gotten annoying as hell. R2-D2 still looks silly as fuck riding in the jedi Starfighter as well. He was designed to fit with the X-wing and just looks like a pimple on the ass of any other vehicle

Maybe if they do it in limited release shortly before its television premier. Then it seems less like a cash grab and more of a treat to the fans.

Nut-busting hilarity there. Too true. The vehicle designs for the prequels are senior-year-@-RISD shite and should have never made it out of the ideation phase. Nothing from the prequels fit into anything that would come "after." Remember back when the bad guys were basically just Nazis in space? Hell, there weren't any aliens conscripted into Republic/Rebel forces in ANH and ESB. Made it much easier to empathize with the action, unlike when we were forced to watch a completely useless battle between Gungans and Droids. Everything was just fukt.

This is supposed to be a geek movie site and we get LUCASFILMS? Whatever. Anyway, you will find no bigger star wars fan that I, but this thing looks... not so good. The thing about Star Wars that was awesome was that it is set in a "real world". The characters look cartoony. Big heads, small, spindly bodies. Not a fan of the design. Oh well.

That this couldn't have been a hybrid of Squaresoft/PIXAR/ILM/WETA. Can you imagine if Squaresoft would've designed the characters? They would've looked more realistic than these at least. If PIXAR would've designed the landscapes and the environments? How realistic looking would that have been. ILM should just stick to the vehicle and ship designs, because everything else looks fake, but at least those look like they are right out of the movies, same as the clone troopers, at least they look somewhat real. And if they would've let WETA design the creatures and some of the aliens, you wouldn't be able to tell that it is a cartoon. "sigh" what could've been, but I guess we'll never know.

I don't know what look they're going for but what they achieved was a PS3 game look. And not a cut scene, a play scene. I know they can't do the Beowulf thing because they'd have to bring back the actors but CGI can look better than that.

I mean, this is a poorly done CGI animated movie that covers backstory from a mediocre movie released in 2002. Again. Because the animated series did that already. Completely. It told every FREAKING second between Episodes 2 and 3. But I guess they did a lot more. But we all know all the characters will survive. And why this? GL needs the money due to his expensive cocaine and Fanta addictions? Or is this the movie he WISHED he had delivered, only now letting someone else do it? I mean, what's the freaking reason, just stop it! When Star Wars came out in '77 did we think this would happen? Oh well, it's all our fault. We consume this shit instead of funding education and development on third world countries for a better world. Imagine if all the money spent on Star Wars since '77 had been used for world peace. Wow. Makes you think.

...ah, yes! It's missing the two 11-year-old boys sitting in front of the screen with XBox controllers in their hands. That would make it complete.

I don't specifically wish ill upon this project, but I've been there on day 1 for every Star Wars movie (even through the prequels), and I finally have no interest at all in seeing something Star Wars, in theaters or on TV. Wake me when the live-action TV show comes around--maybe that'll do it. Maybe.

for SW will probably come with the live action TV series. Hopefully. I'm curious to see how that comes out esp. if it focuses on the bounty hunters, and what was going on between III and IV. I find that anything closer in storyline to Ep. IV is more intriguing. I mean, I read the James Luceno novel "The Rise of Darth Vader" and I thought the stuff in there about Tarkin, the Wookiees, Alderaan, Obi-Wan on Tatooine and Darth Vader hunting Jedi was what we were going to see in the prequels. That was the stuff I was looking for in terms of a "prequel". As for this, I thought the trailer made it look better than I thought, but I too am wary of Jabba's son and a new padawan for Anakin etc. I mean, that is more of a sign of Lucas and his ideas getting old or relying on the naivete of the kiddie audience. I look at the prequels and wonder how differently GL would've written them during the '70s/'80s, but you all know GL hates writing.

I just cannot get excited for this movie. I had no interest in the Cartoon Network SW:CW series and this feature film just looks like something I'd end up renting or waiting for it to hit cable if I ever decided to watch it. I have to agree with those of us already stating that if another film series were to be made for the franchise, I'd like to see the 3rd and final trilogy be made. Also, have Lucas not be the director or at least work a little harder on the scripts as I really just didn't get as drawn in by the prequels as I did by the original trilogy. Honestly, has anything I just said not been said before a hundred times or more by just about every SW fan out there? Don't you think that means something? Too bad it's all about milking the cash cow instead of artistic credibility and making the fans happy.

How much does Lucas have to do with the story and writing? If the answer is "very little" then this will be the first time since the 70s that I've been excited for anything Star Wars. Lucas can't write worth a steaming fucking shit, and if he has much to do with this cartoon, it will totally suck, no matter how good the animation.

...had he done it before Genndy outdid everything he'd done on film up to that point with his sweet toons. Now it is just also-ran Lucas just trying to be clever and closing the barn door after the horse has moved to Phoenix and gotten a job. It was bad enough the way he tried to incorporate Grevious and did such a shit job of it in the movies proving that Tartakovsky does Star Wars better than he can, and also proving my assertation from the beginning about what a one-shot wonder Lucas is. American Graphitti? Fine. AG 2? shit. Indiana Jones 1? Excellent. IJ 2? shit. Star Wars 1? Great. Star Wars 3? shit.

Genndy did this better Whether you like the art style or not you must admit it was a million times more compelling then anything in the prequels. What he did with Grevious, Shakti, And Mace Windu, was amazing. And yes Lucas can not write worth shit look at AOTC or ROTS as evidence that what ever writing ability he had is completly shot to shit.

The man who once revolutionized cinematic spectacle and escapism is now happy to pitch a charmless two hour, irony-free version of the opening scene of Being John Malkovic at us.

We will not be moved, George: We want the live action theatrical episodes of 7, 8 and 9, directed by a modern-day equivalent of Kirshner (ie a non-yes man, someone who will stop the rotation of the Earth if need be to ensure the story and scenes fucking WORK... and we don't mean work for YOU, Lucas, but for the movie going public. But of course, we're NOT who you care about anymore, are we? The only people who've had your attention for the last twenty years are the millions of brats in the Hasbro sections of the world's Woolworths, who'll scream and scream until they're sick at their parents for a length of astonishingly-priced plastic telescopic picnic cups, which in the fertile imagination of these Nickelodeon-induced ADD sufferers becomes an indesctructible sword.

At least that's what I think I read on a headline somewhere. It makes more sense looking at them and seeing it as a 21st century answer to Supermarionation or whatever it was called. Also looks like if you liked the movie STRINGS you'll be more open to this thing. It's going to be an acquired taste though, I'm sure. Honestly, I thought even Genndy's renderings took getting used to and I don't hate his work (yes he can draw, art is not defined as just what YOU like, while your opinion of a given style is all about taste and not a universal truth). My biggest complaint is that the screenshots look to me like they came out of a game. I am not a gamer, so that is somewhat off-putting to me. Also, it reminds me of the TV show Skyland, which has some great artwork in it but truly horribly voice work and character animation (all mocap from what I can see). I'm expecting something about on par with that, which means I'll keep an eye on it for the visuals but won't cry if it only lasts 1 season. I'll be happy if it's better than that though.

why do all those ships look so more curvy and organic than the boxy-hardedged ships of the OT? things generally get more curvy and smooth not the opposite, like cars in our age for example. and that argument that the empire has caused everything to be worn down is moot because even the empire's ships don't look as flashy as the republic proto tiefighter types in the prequels. technically they sould be flying the same ships since 20 years is a blip on the radar of a galaxy which easily has thousands of years of history.
