T1, very good. T2, great. T3, shit. Series, good. Considering the time and budgetary contraints of a regular series compared to a movie, TSCC really kicked alot of ass, it's very hard to compare them.

I enjoyed the Pilot *much* more than I expected to, but the next batch of episodes were a bit disappointing. However, by ep6 they hit a stride and the previous episodes began to make more sense. By ep9, I was actually rather eager to see more. Lena Heady needs to *really* get harder, likewise Thomas Dekker, but Summer Glau was wonderful and Brian Austin Green was also surprisingly believable. I hope they can reflect on what worked, what didn't, and take some considered criticism into account while planning season 2. Could be a great show.

This could have been a really bad series, but they treated the source material with reverence and did some interesting things with older characters. I especially liked the episode with the doctor from when Sarah Connor was institutionalized. The writing at times is a little lax, but I'll give it another season.

I'm glad it's coming back for another season. The only fault I can find with it is the persistent use of Sarah Connor's voice overs. Summer Glau and, especially, Brian Green turned out to be pretty good in this, too. And the extreme continuity porn -- I'm surprised at how detailed this series has been with tying in with even miniscule elements from the movies, including the third one.

With her having voiceovers she seems too in control of what's going on. They're copying T2 which had them but there was a REASON for that - they were supposed to be spoken by OLD Sarah shown at the end of the movie.

T1: Amazing and groundbreaking. First of its kind on film.

T2: really well made--a fun action movie with some brilliant moments.

T3: utter crap. Forgettable and in fact best forgotten.

Series: Mediocre and awkward initially, though warming up throughout S1. Great cast. Last few episodes were bordering on fantastic (though not without some minor flaws throughout). I'm really glad it's apparently gotten the green light for S2. This one has potential to be one of the handful of decent shows on currently.

Altogether good news.

Thoroughly enjoyed this show, from week to week. Of course, it's nowhere as monumental as LOST or BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, but I'd probably choose it over HEROES. It's nice to have a serialized drama that isn't an ensemble piece for a change. SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES manages to be both intimate and epic at the same time. I like the cast, the offbeat drama, the look of the production. I like the feel of the show.

This is the Golden Era of TV - right now. At this time in history, television is actually better than cinema. That's what I think. Orionsangels, I definitely have to disagree with you. Serialized drama has completely transformed the landscape of TV, setting it free to flesh out broad narratives with a more expansive arc. Movies are actually more "limited" in comparison. And when you say that TV "can't go all out like a movie", I have to ask you. Have you ever seen HBO's superlative series, OZ?

Apr 20th, 2008
01:02:19 AM
there are the worst shows and the best shows simultaneously. Reality television has perpetrated some of the most wretched dreck ever, but at the same time because reality TV is cheap to produce networks are able to take a chance on more "experimental" stuff like Lost. Also, television doesn't just rely on advertisements for revenue. Thanks to DVDs, if a show is good enough it will continue to make money long after it goes off the air. It's amazing what technology has done for television, once known as the last vestige of the creatively impaired.

rbatty024 - reality TV vs. drama
by LoneGun
Apr 20th, 2008
01:31:13 AM
You raise an interesting point. Those really are the two extremes, aren't they - the dreck of reality TV and the daring of "experimental" dramas like LOST. I certainly have no particular fondness for reality TV but I will say this. I think that it is because of the massive popularity of this "dreck" (reality TV), that we now have shows like LOST. I remember, five or six years ago when reality TV was exploding in popularity, saying to friends, "Man, the networks are really going to have to come up with some extraordinary new stuff, if they want to lure viewers back to episodic TV." And that's pretty much what's happened. In the wake of reality TV's domination, there has been a gradual eruption of daring new dramas, like 24, LOST, BSG, THE WIRE, etc. Reality TV forced networks to come up with better dramas. LAW & ORDER just wasn't cutting it.

If they can cut back on the too-80's over ernest voice-over and get the the story arcs moving, as they were just starting to, then it grow into something very interesting. But so far the pacing is way too slow and the dialogue over indulgent - it's as if they're hiding lack of story behind the boring moral issues. I say 'boring' because thats what they become when they're over stated time and again - decide if you're making this for kids or adults (who were the kids that loved the originals. Right now it's middle of the road. A Terminator series shouldn't be 'just about' getting a second series, it should be a home run - see BSG for a guide guys!

when did T2 become a hated piece of shit and T3 an enjoyable sci-fi?

look, here's the thing. You're fucking crazy.

Terminator 1 is a cheesy aged piece of nostalgia with a rediculous lack of understanding of time travel dynamics

T2 is an updated, possibly classiest, action film ever created... topped only by it's extended version. it has the same soul as 'Aliens' within it.

T3 was absolute rubbish from start to finish. granted it had a wild closing .... but Arnie just wasn't believable as a menacing robot. and the story (story??) was what you'd expect from some half arsed television spin off....

which is funny because here is a televison spin off and it's the worthy successor to the concrete foundation T1 and T3 laid down.

that said, when my brother struggled to try and figure out "how do you give life to liquid metal??" i simple smack him over the head and say "Dude, it's a fucking movie!!"

why am i here, you all think X3 is shit and X2 is the pinicle of superhero films. bunch of wankers.

Ok, there were things about the TV show I hated like the time travel to 2007 and all the mythology around it (how they seem to be sending hundreds of people back through the ages to to build time machines and other tasks, why not just send an army to protect John?). I was also not a fan of Kyle Reese having a brother who happens to stumble across Sarah and John (although Green's performance and how he has fit in since has worked). But overall it was a good and getting better series.

As for the movies, the first two were classics. I don't get how people are trashing the second film and saying it betrays the first. The third one betrays the first far more by taking the whole mantre of "No fate is set and the future is what you make of it" and turned it into "The future is inevitable and you are fucked no matter what you do so just deal with it." Nothing betrayed the original movie than that.

besides, I couldn't get over Nick Stahl's performance of John Connor as a follower who seems to take orders and watch everything happen from Arnold to Claire Danes. Never once did I believe that he had anything in him to be the savior of the human race. Thomas Deker is far more believable in the John Connor role.

When Cameron squeezed it out of his asshole.

T2 sucks. Its terrible! I loved the first one, hated the second (and not just because the ending is EXACTLY the same as Old Yeller), and thought the 3rd was funny and cool.

T1 is dated in terms of efx, sure, but its a great story. T2 has better efx, but it also has an unbelievably stupid, overwrought, and unintentionally comedic story that makes it ridiculous. Also, it features the Terminator as a *snicker* father figure? You have got to be fucking kidding me. Its terrible! At least T3 had the stones to realize it was ridiculous and run with it.

Yes, T1 is dated at this point, but at the time of its release it was revolutionary. Cameron use of 80s music including the score and the trendy fashion of the times definitely helps to date it along with the outdated SFX that were relative low budget at time, but the story is cannon.

I still don't get the beef with 2 though. Yes, John Connor is too old for the time of the story and the marketing department gave away the fact that Arnie was a good Terminator in the trailers, but I still think it had a solid story for an action scifi and was an entertaining watch. T3 wishes it could have been half as good as T2.

The first one was an excellent horror movie. The second was a cliche action flick with a lot of shouting and gunfire. No comparison.

And I think T1 and T2 are about equal, but for differing reasons. T3 was a bit weak. The series, however, is pretty fucking cool. My only problem with the series is the Fox primetime show tendency to have the music SWELL before a commercial break, and have some "mini-cliffhanger" before the ads. I hate that shit. I really wish we had some uninterrupted television shows like in the U.K.-- I'll take my adverts in between shows, thanks.

For my money, ALIENS is Camerons best movie, and one of my all time favorites, followed closely by T1. I can't say I am particularly fond of anything else he's done. ABYSS sucked. TRUE LIES sucked. T2 super-sucked (seriously, try and watch it with a straight face, its impossible, its laughable!). TITANIC sucked. S-U-C-K-E-D. I'm curious to see what Battle Angel turns into. of Sarah Conner, and is bringing subtle depths and dimensions to the character. The fact that the show is taking time to develop is a point in its favor.

There is a developing mystery about Cameron, as well, that is intriguing, and while the role is kinda flat for Summer Glau, I think it is great to see her, and great to see her not weeping and whimpering. She was good during her short arc in The Unit.

Hollywood seems hell bent on portraying teenage boys as unlikeable assholes, and they are hitting that stereotype a bit too hard in this series, too.

An FBI agent as a "believer" is also an interesting twist, and the actor is very good.

But Lena is The Reason To Watch

Your question (why didn't the T1000 just mimic Sarah and call to John itself instead of trying to force her to do it) is answered in the extended director's cut. Because it had just been frozen and shot and blown apart, the T1000 was not operating properly. This is demonstrated in an extended scene where it walks through the steel plant and is unable to keep itself from morphing into everything it touches--the implication being that its mimicking abilities were damaged. By the time it did copy Sarah, the abilities had presumably healed.

Of course this is just opinion, but, while I enjoy all three movies, I think the second is clearly the best in many ways, including the best as a movie: the cinematography and set design and lighting and all that stuff is phenomenal. That steel plant scene is a great example, where the movie's two color schemes of harsh metallic blues and vivid burning reds are brought together side by side--just beautiful. This is my main argument with the third movie--it's an entertaining sci-fi/action movie, but it doesn't have that artistic attention to detail that Cameron brings.

I liked most of T3.

Even if the TX blew super massive monkey chunks, the car chase was entertaining, the part where Arnold gets reprogrammed was good and best of all was the dark, dark ending. Even if you hated the movie I would say anyone with half a brain has to concede that the ending, at least on paper, was well-conceived. I hate Lena Headey with a passion though. She was annoying as fuck as the movies I saw her in, she bugs me in interviews, and forget all of this actor crap about not wanting one thing to overshadow another -- she hasn't even seen the other Terminator movies. Come on. In my mind, that's just disrespectful.

Some of T2 is overblown, but it is better than T3. The hard part is that the director's cut of T2 is way too long, although some of the scenes are very good and clear up the movie. Given the choice, I guess I'd watch the TC because I can always mentally fill in those gaps, having seen the DC, but the movie does get kind of mushy, cornball, and overly sentimental.

Not that I don't like Glau, but interesting idea. That could work if they needed to change actors...
Ah, but what if they're bringing it back on Fridays?

On its face, this is good news. The show is six parts TERMINATOR to four parts GILMORE GIRLS, but it's been very entertaining on its own terms, thanks in no small part to the acting (especially the vivid and surprising star turns from Brian Austin Green and that little shit Dekker). But Fox hasn't earned its reputation for being hard on skiffy shows by accident.

Yeah, the extended cut did make it more clear that the T1000 was experiencing glitches after being frozen by liquid nitrogen, but I didn't think it wasn't clear in the theatrical release. Besides, if that is the best Laserpants has to say the movie was laughable, I don't think he/she has a leg to stand on. Plenty of movies have breakdowns worse than that.

I have watched T2 in the last few months and I didn't laugh at one unintentially funny scene the whole movie. In fact, nearly 20 years later I think I it is still a solid action/scifi that holds up pretty well today.

As for other Cameron movies, I really loved the Abyss and if you think it sucked it probably didn't have enough explosions or action for you and you were expecting something else. I thought True Lies was dumb fun. I agree Titanic was a bore and overrated though.

As for T3, I though the movie was an unintentional parody of the first two movies (especially the second one). I literally groned when they did lame assed jokes like Arnold putting on the Elton John glasses or the TX making her boobs bigger. Those were weak jokes that have no reason to be in a serious action or scifi movie. Even if that movie didn't have to live up to the Terminator legacy, it would have blown on its own. I will admit with you and other that the ending was good, but it was it only redeeming quality in my book.

Those idiots can't be older than 12. Seriously.

T2 is one of the most awesome sci-fi action flicks ever to appear on the big screen. Period.

Annoying kids badmouthing Cameron's masterpiece kinda piss me off. Take your heads outta your asses, kids!

Sarah Connor Chronicles v Bionic Woman

both these shows are nearing the ends of their run on UK tv right now and it's striking how much one show improved over its run while the other declined.

Starting out, Sarah Connor Chronicles seemed slightly weaker while Bionic Woman appeared to have all the advantages (esp all the Galactica connections).

But by the end of its run, Sarah Connor Chronicles had developed into a decent addendum to the Terminator films, while Bionic Woman just kind of flops around trying to figure out what it is. I know there was a lot of rejigging of Bionic Woman but it's impressive how they never spent any time trying to fix the basic air of implausibility. The David Eick-scripted episode was best (because funniest) and then it all kinda went downhill from there fairly steeply.

I thought season one was a bit uneven, and the finale was horribly anticlimactic, but all in all it was a solid show and I look forward to seeing a second year.

Also, I've got to agree with newc0253 on Bionic Woman. Promising start, but it just gets worse with each passing week. That one is in dire need of a better sense of direction. Very little seems to be at stake, and too many of the supporting cast are bland. You've got Miguel Ferrer, for God's sake, make better use of him. And bring back Katee Sackhoff!

Not great, not terrible. I watched, but didn't invest too much attention into it after I realized the writers really don't give a shit what they do. Cameron's behavior was inconsistant as hell... blending into the school seemlessly in the beginning, but then becoming a social misfit when the script needs her to. The skinless terminator skull through the time portal. The stupid school scenes, and the (thankfully) dropped suicide plotline. A terminator posing as a husband (wtf, he would have broken the bed and crushed the pelvis of his wife! Also... in that case... terminator sex?? seriously?) Terminator body just taken to a junk pile? Seriously? Aaggh... at least the action sequences are pretty good. And Summer Glau and Lena Heady make the pants tight.

If they can tighten up the writing for next season, I'll enjoy it a lot more.

was the action, which for TV standards was surprisingly good. I could poke holes in the plot easily, but it was the cast I could not get past, simply a terrible cast, especially Sarah Connor.

Says "I really wish we had some uninterrupted television shows like in the U.K.-- I'll take my adverts in between shows, thanks."

No, you probably don't want that. We only get it on BBC 1, 2, 3 and 4, All are "free to air" but the latter 2 are only available if you go digital. We pay a licence fee of (correct me if I am wrong here, I pay by DD) about £130 ($260?)a year for the pleasure. Even if you don't WANT to watch BBC, you still pay the fee if you have receiving equipment. Whenever you buy a TV, digiBox or for some strange reason a DVD player you have to fill a form in with your details before they sell you it. They then HOUND you to confirm you have a TV licence. They don't cross ref with their address database, oh no, they just check if there is one under your name. Oh, and you also have to allow an inspector access to your home if you don't have a TV licence, to check if you have a TV. The BBC is a fucking rip off and the sooner they privatise it the better.

We also have add free movies on Sky TV. Sky TV is really expensive at around £40-45 a month for the top package without HD or timeshifting/recording facilities. All other channels carry commercials, even on subscription channels. You pay around £15 for movies on top of whatever package you already have. Which always includes shit like The God Channel which you HAVE to take.

We Also have next to nothing in the way of HD channels. I believe we have around 4 ish at the minute and you can only get them by buying a SkyHD box for £300 (last time I checked) and paying an extra £10 a month on top of your other subscriptions. Give me the American system any day. Oh, and 99% of our programming is either American or SHITE. Most of the time it is both of those things.

Good to hear, I'll watch

But I wouldn't say that it's better than the movies just yet. And the actress playing Sarah has bored me since the pilot, which is kind of a hard thing to fix at this point. I'll continue watching, but something tells me I won't be for long. I don't see how they can come up with enough story.

I thought John Connor realized T-1000 wasn't Sarah because part of it's body was still morphed into the steel grate with the yellow and black striped and Jojhn saw that just before he got too close. I'm pretty sure that was the extended cut.

What? Considering time travel hasn't been invented, who's to say which screen version has the right dynamics? And T1 is the best of the series, and one of the finest films of the 80's. A Sci-Fi classic.
