Some very cool shots, but they don't quite have the right flow to them. Comics and film both are visual mediums, but when films are done "comic book" style, they seem static, although aesthetically pleasing. What's interesting is that Miller's comics aren't static at all, but are dynamic and energetic, loose and gritty.

Robert Rodriguez translated Frank Miller's vision to the big screen. Zack Snyder did too. And both were revered for their respect for the original artist and the source material. This shows none of that, and there's no excuse for it. I like Frank Miller's work as much as the next guy, but if he wanted to do more of his usual schtick, he could have used any number of his own creations (or *gasp* created something new). I'm surprised that you're so casually approving about this Harry. It's too bad that this is probably the only film version of Will Eisner's work we'll ever get, because there appears to be little to none of him in it.

..let's consider the greater implications success with THE SPIRIT might suggest: if this, along with WATCHMEN, makes money, can we expect to see a DKN film directed by Frank Miller in the near future? What if Marvel, by way of success with their self-produced IRON MAN, chose to reboot DAREDEVIL ala HULK and lets FM take a crack at it?

I mean, props for using the Untouchables opening theme, but that is all. Looks stiff and lifeless - not unlike a B&W Dick Tracy (the Warren Beatty movie, not the strip).

I'm no Will Eisner exegete so I might be wrong, but it looks like a pet project greenlit in the wake of the 300 and Sin City success, and handed on a silver plate to Miller who'll make whatever derivative movie he wants. Not interested unless the full-length trailer unveils good performances. But I sure hope I'm wrong and it'll kick ass - for all the genuine Spirit fans ou there who know probably better than me.

I dig the use of the UNTOUCHABLES theme.

Miller was da shit in the 80's. It's overblown now. Sin City was a one-off MEH exercise, a few years too late. But it was okay. To do it over and over is dooming Miller to a cinematic corner where no one will ever take him seriously. And his overdose of testosterone is a bit much; 300 looked dated and ripe for parody after only a few months. This thing is doomed, unfortunately. Would have been better to see if Miller could have pulled off a less art-directed film.

a grittier DD or a big screen Dark Knight Returns would be sweet, no doubt about that... but I'm more comfortable with talented and/or established directors working closely with Miller rather than his own take on the material. Believe me I'm not jaded, but it irritates me when the fanboy gospel - when echoed by clueless studio decisions, see my previous post - leads to catastrophic results.

So how about a DKR movie written by Miller and directed by Eastwood? Deal?

i love Miller's work.. i have a shelf full of his stuff... but it was a mistake to let him make this look and sound like Sin City. You can usually get away with "more of the same" in comic books, but in films it's a recipe for empty theatres if people feel like they've already seen it.

Thats a really interesting article and for some reason I'm really surprised at how articulate Cameron is, though I shouldn't be I guess. Also about that youtube vid, while I felt really guilty I laughed my ass off and watched it 5 times. I got similar reactions from 2 of my friends and another told me off. It reminded my of the Steve Irwin jokes South Park made like a week after his death. However most of the humor, for me was in the over the top Bale impression and retard Gordon. In conclusion I'm going to hell.

I profess no love for Harry Knowles, but dude... if you have any respect for Will Eisner, you'll make sure no one ever sees this movie. You see, Miller's always had a hard-on for The Spirit - and Will's death in '05 gave him exactly the opportunity he needed to steal the rights to that idea and make it his own. Frank Miller to Will Eisner is just like George Lucas to Kurosawa - both men have displayed the talent to do great work, but they are one trick ponies, riding off the success of being at the right place at the right time in their industries.

Agreed on HBO Fables (even though i don't worship that series like some). In fact, I'd like to see tv/film adaptations of just about any Vertigo series (ESPECIALLY DMZ). Though I'm not sure Preacher will translate well to another medium.
Fables took me a while to get into.
by rbatty024
Apr 19th, 2008
07:14:13 PM
I had to read that book for some time before I really understood what people were talking about. Once you figure out the mythology made of mythologies that Fables is creating, and once you really get into the characters, then that series can really blow you away.

I think that a television show would be a wonderful format for Fables. The special effects might be prohibitive, though. I don't think you actually need to make it R-rated. Most of the issues could be read by younger kids, even if there is a violent or perverse one every now and again.

I think 100 Bullets would be the most television ready comic book out there. A mixture of story arc and standalone episodes would be a perfect fit. Why television hasn't realized how many great series are already out there, I have no idea. You would think at least one series would have been picked up by now.

As someone said about 100 Bullets

I might be too violent for anything outside HBO. They really missed the bandwagon by making Y:TLM a movie instead of a tv series. I mean it would have been relatively cheap compared to other comics, and even if you make it into 3 movies you're going to cut out a lot of good stuff in 7hrs.

Too bad it will probably bomb because about a gazillion people will get it confused with Sin City, realize it's not, and can it because it isn't. i was not very excited before but I'm excited now. but if any comic book movie deserves some more vibrant color, it's probably this one. I don't care if Eisner originally intended for the costume to be black, blue works much better on a pulpy comic level.

And I'm really wanting to see it. The actors voice sounds cool as hell. The way he hovers a bit while running across the wire in between steps is SWEET. And I like the way he looks a little off balance when doing his roof jump thing.

I realize now that this is his interpretation of The Spirit. I've never read the book so it's not bothering me that the look is similar to Sin Sity...but really i think it just looks like The Spirit comic book, if Frank Miller drew/wrote it. So I'm fine with this. If this is how he feels most comfortable jumping back into the film game, I say give him a shot.

frank miller might just have some tricks up his sleeve on this one. yeah, it has a sin city flavor to it but that doesn't bother me so much. a lot of good director's films have recurring visual styles. i am having a difficult time understanding the negative comments about frank miller and his work on this film. the trailer looks good to me. i can't trash this one yet. i want to actually watch the film first.

Miller is a professed Eisner fan, and I'm sure that whatever he's put on film will not disrespect the man or his work. I, personally, am a big Miller fan and will definitely check this out when it's released.

Maybe Miller can direct a new Robocop film sometime in the future. Even better, maybe he can use CGI and whatever they can scrape together to re-edit Robocop 2 into something that is closer to Miller's original script.

Guys, seriously, you're pretty stupid.

Why did nobody complain when Batman was suddenly wearing black? He was originally drawn wearing blue...

Why did nobody complain when Frank Miller wrote a mature Batman story? He was publically accepted as a bit of a camp fool up until then.

Why did nobody complain when Frank Miller interpreted the story of Thermopylae into his style, as a campfire tale that boosted the event's legacy?

This entire site is full of people who need something to bitch about... Go bitch about how stupid GI Joe looks, because it does. This is Miller's style, so get used to it or go fuck yourself.

Harry You are soo wrong. Don't apologize for derivative crap masquerading as THE classic comic book character. You probably also love every Danny Elfman score, because he always "interprets" each film so uniquely. Is a shit sandwich an "interpretation" of a cheeseburger? I don't want Frank Miller's shit sandwich! stuffdaddy.blogspot.com I am not going to over judge the Coked-up Raymond Chandler finds Metropolitan Theology soaked monologue that is contained in this heartfelt, well intentioned, piece of crap that is passing for the first Spirit trailer.. but I love The Spirit. I'm not going to gush, but let's say I've read around 93% of Will Eisner's work. He is the first great complete artist (art and script) of the comic book art form. Frank Miller knew Eisner. He loved him. I believe that Frank Miller wants to do right by him. I want him to as well. Other than Watchmen, there is no "comic to film" property that I would rather see succeed. But I have to ask, "who was this guy talking in this trailer?" "That was The Spirit?" "The Spirit is running and jumping across roof tops, while engaging in metaphoric soliloquy?" (not going to complain about the hokey cg jumping, because I believe that's on purpose) Denny Colt......The Spirit, is a "man's man." He's a classic good guy hero; charming, good natured, lovable, punch drunk, and extremely hard to kill. This is not a man who thinks about the nature of heroes and totems as it relates to himself and his city!!Where did this "My City" crap come from? He's not Batman! Since when is The Spirit, a dark vigilante who dances upon the city skyline like DareDevil in a dark duster? Where is the brutish, but lovable guy in the blue suit? Where is the gloved underdog, who seemed more a mix between Cary Grant and Li'l Abner? I keep ranting here stuffdaddy.blogspot.com

Apparently for Frank Miller, "moving forward" means "totally ignore what Eisner did to make the Spirit unique and memorable and turn it into a clone of SIN CITY." "My city screams"-- what the hell is that?!? Eisner's Spirit was a fun adventure comic that often focused on the everyday people populating the city-- sometimes the Spirit would only show up for a few panels. It looks like Frank Miller only knows how to do one thing anymore: over-the-top film noir dialogue and shitty CGI-filled images.

Frank Miller will only give us more of his overwrought and long-ago uninteresting shit. And Harry Knowles-Nothing-At-All will continue to blindly fellate Miller for a chance to eat some dip on the movie's catering table. *Sigh* Doc C

Why adapt the spirit if you're gonna ignore the Spirit of the spirit? Making things darker certainly does not make them cooler. Frank Miller has a hangup on the success of the sin city movie. That movie is okay. I look at it as an interesting experiment. Something that hadn't been done before on that level. And you always need a movie like that to exist as the foundation for bigger and better things. So here comes frank miller again... doing the exact same thing. Sin City was far from a work of perfection. The biggest inherent flaw being the lack of cohesion between the physical beings and their environment. They looked like 2 different worlds. The people looked like people filmed black and white, and the backgrounds looked like computer animations or cartoons. That works if that's what you're going for, Pagemaster, Cool World, ROger Rabbit. But in this case, it doesn't work because these people are supposed to be part of the same world. A lot of work had to be done with that movie in rendering the backgrounds to look less sharp, glossy and CG than they appeared. There needed to be more filters and more grain. That way everything fit. Miller is making the same mistake here.
For me, Sin City's biggest flaw was...

"Making things darker certainly does not make them cooler." This is true, but it doesn't get said nearly often enough. I think the design precedents set by Frank Miller's/Tim Burton's Batman (while innovative and striking at the time, and coherent within Burton's larger body of work) have tarnished practically every comic book film adaptation since. It never ceases to amaze me how people can suspend their disbelief for all manner of supernatural abilities, backstories, etc. and yet balk at the idea of a character being portrayed as he/she/it is in the original comics. The arch seriousness of many of these films (often attempted by lazily slapping on some techno-bondage black & silver costume details), imo, only serves to amplify the underlying silliness of the characters.

"It's too bad that this is probably the only film version of Will Eisner's work we'll ever get, because there appears to be little to none of him in it." Seriously. At this point I've pretty much given up on griping about it. My brother Phil gave me a different perspective on it, saying that Miller's just trying to do what he knows. He didn't write or draw The Spirit and he has never directed a movie before, so he's going to do what he knows. That sort of made me more empathetic to Miller's view. I still don't buy Miller's excuse though. What he considers a bold new direction that Eisner would have wanted is just a re-hash of a better movie that was already done 3 years ago. I'm sure Eisner would have liked to have seen something of his translate to the screen rather than Miller pretty much co-opting the thing as his own character. Whatever, maybe someone in the future will get it right.

-this is it. We've seen these visuals in Sin City already. And they at least looked interesting in the trailers. This looks like the same thing with boring ass characters that no one but the comic book history buffs will give a crap about. To the typical trailer watcher this looks like a bunch of gimmicks and storylines we've already seen in too many comic book movies. And worse, it looks like hokey crap on top of it that doesn't look like it's worth seeing. I won't be surprised to see this fail. I understand wanting to bring Will Eisner's vision to the masses, but this is simply not it. This is Frank Miller going into his Sin City universe and going to a slightly happier and maybe less violent metropolis than Basin City and dropping in his versions of characters he liked from Will Eisner's The Spirit. Go away Frank and don't come back until the real Sin City 2 is done.

If this were DAREDEVIL or BATMAN I'd be ecstatic with the dark serious tone and superhero rooftop antics. Tragically Miller's retread of such earlier work channeled through THE SPIRIT is nothing less than a goddamn ego-driven mind fuck. Gone is the fun, romance and satire that Eisner used so brilliantly to simultaneously embrace and mock the comic book hero world while always ALWAYS balancing it all with a kindred love for the fragile chaotic frailties and emotions of the best and the worst in our humanity. Viewing this trailer reminds me of something Miller has often said, "You can't polish a turd."

What a god-awful piece of shit! Who are they aiming this film at? Any person who even has a passing interest in films (in general, not even simply action/superhero flicks) will take one look at this cheap looking, cheesy sounding dump of a trailer and dismiss it instantly. If the final film action is as poorly executed as that laughable 'stumble over the rooftops', it's gonna truly kill Miller's film career. I've seen better flash animation than that (WAY better). The poor dude looks like they wired him up to the crane wrong, and might actually be hanging from his cock. Simply bad. In a lot of ways. Bring back Dick Tracy: "I'm on my way" Can you say "rip-off"?

He helped Robert Rodriquez make Sin City, which was his comic book. He has never directed a movie on his own.. 300, another of his books, was directed by Zack Snyder.. He had no involvement. Cheers!
Doctor Cosmic.. The worst thing is..

Brad Bird has long wanted to make a Spirit animated feature. That idea died, because, just when Bird had come into his own with his last two successes, Miller had acquired the job. Perhaps the damnedest shame of all.
Wow...

That had to be the worst usage of wire-work I have ever seen. That guy showed absolutely no weight at all and for the most part looked like he was walking on ice. I'm sorry, but that was CHARLIES ANGELS bad.
Interpretation? More like SinCity-fication . . .

That's not the Spirit, that's Marv with a mask and without his "condition."
Looks like a veryyyy acquired taste flick

I mean, I could see die hard comic fans appreciating the over-the-top element of the film that translates to comic expression, but it really doesn't look that fantastic otherwise. The style has been done before in film, and even done better by Miller himself.
Great teaser and look..

Fuck ya'll. This is classic Film Noir look and narration. Miller is the modern day master of Noir storytelling, and this trailer is goddamn beautiful. I don't give two shits from Shinola if it is different from the comic. This is a truly beautiful piece of art, and the movie is probably going to be even better. Fuck all'ya haters.
"Classic Film Noir look and narration"?

"Miler is the modern day master of Noir storytelling"? So basically you don't know fuck-all about noir, it's just a word you apply to over-shadowed compositions with bullshit, phony tough-guy dialogue.
