First thing i've seen from this movie that says "Eisner" rather than "Miller". That said, I'm still expecting this movie to favor Frank's sensibilities (which in recent years have bordered on parody), so I'm not getting my hopes up too high.

I like the "My City Screams" thing, i like the Spirit being in the shadow, but you throw in the noirish look, the red tie, the lettering and it looks like a Sin City/300 rip off...honestly when I saw the red lettering on The Spirit my inital thought was "300" coupled with a little Sin Cityish stuff. I'm guessing Marketing came up with this to appeal to that Sin City/300 fan base

The poster is vaguely like Eisner's style, although it would be more in keeping for The Spirit to be carved out of the buildings and the title to be in red. My City Screams suggests this movie will contain none of the feel of Eisner's hero, the humor and wit. Frank Miller is too Serious And Darkly Realistic to bring the correct atmosphere to the character. My City Screams is a bad mood if you want to make the obvious choice of bringing in P'Gell, unless you totally change P'Gell, which I expect he will. The only thing even to even remotely inspire curiosity about this picture is how Frank will handle Ebony White, and that will be satisfied before the movie hits the first screen, I would imagine.

I just registered an account for myself at AICN so that I could say that. This is my first post. Nothing else that I've ever seen here has made me as passionate to join the board and give my opinion as this. This is terrible. This just doesn't make sense to me. Why is a first time director who's career in his native medium is floundering allowed to not only direct such an important property, but to completely remake it in his style rather than truly adapt the original artist's vision? This is as much of a travesty as any other comic book movie in which the director shits all over the property. The fact that this is coming from a man who worked in comics his whole life is astonishing. UGH. I can't talk about this anymore. Yes I can. Eat shit, Frank Miller. Will Eisner's The Spirit was really fucking awesome just the way it was. You must really be in love with yourself to think that Eisner's fans would rather see your idea of The Spirit than his.

He has his own iconic style at this point, and I can respect that. My friend thought the Sin City movie was a pointless project since it would literally be the comic on screen. I disagreed and I think I was right on that score with that movie. As that movie stands now, it's great because it's a fully fleshed out world- no matter where you turn, there's always some shit going on. I know that sounds obvious, but I genuinely admired the triple narrative and how they intertwined to drive that point home. Having said that, 300 was ridiculous. Does anyone remember the giant mutant thing that was in the bad guy's entourage- the one they never used after showing him. Plus, the movie rode this huge wave of fandom that I just don't understand. It was a very claustrophobic "action" movie, and that's in quotes because any fighting was very static. So I was ambivalent about this movie when I heard he would helm it. That ambivalence is gone. I've seen photos, that horrible figurine and now this poster. The Spirit is not meant to be a dichromatic movie with occasional splashes of red. That's not Eisner, that's Miller. I think more Sin City would be pointless too, but a lot of people want that to be made and I can understand that. He should be making that since it fits his palette. Although personally I think Ronin would be a more ambitious project, and would truly test his film chops. I'm not stocked on flame retardant clothes, but I spoke at my own peril. Bring on the noise.
The new black costume
by Napoleon Park
Apr 19th, 2008
12:43:28 AM
is one of comics hoariest cliches and after Mystery Men parodied it I'm surprised anyone is still doing it.

That said, it makes perfect sense for characters like Batman, the Shadow and the Spirit who sneak around in the dark to dress in black. It makes more sense than that original Punisher costume with him running around in white go-go boots and white elbow length evening gloves.

I used to like Miller's early stuff so this could be interesting. what i hate it that in every picture for this I've seen so far it's that same "tie flying in the wind" schtick. Like the Spirit is the crimefighter who doesn't have a tie tack. Who's done the first "Dilbit" parody ad with his little red tie curled up? That's so effing obvious we're bound to see it all over the place before long.

You fuckers act like he's a talentless hack. Both 300 and Sin City are essentially direct, panel to screen translations of his work to the screen, which people have embraced. This is the dude who gave us Dark Knight Returns, Year One, Elektra, 300, and Sin City to name his most popular works. If The Spirit sucks, then say what you will about it. But until you leave the theater, reserve judgment and at least show the man who's showered us with geeky awesomeness some love and respect. Cocksuckers.

Go fuck yourself. I stated "to name his most popular works." Don't assume you're a greater Frank Miller fan because I didn't bother to mention a Daredevil storyline. Am I gonna get pissed at you for not mentioning Man Without Fear, Hard Boiled, Martha Washington, or Ronin? No. Get off your fucking high horse. We're both Frank Miller fans, so add something to the conversation or jump into oncoming traffic. Also, I love Sin City. Not all of it, but a good chunk of it. Just because I happen to love neo-noir, and appreciate "the garbage that is Sin City" shouldn't mean shit. I'm here trying to defend a man you're obviously a man of, and you make snap judgments. Well played, you fucking coward.
I disagree with Miller about comics ratings.
by Napoleon Park
Apr 19th, 2008
02:03:19 AM
He, Moore and others made a huge stink about walking away from DC over a proposed cover ratings system. the same DC where Miller works now, of course.

Labeling underground comix 'adults only' allowed them to exist and thrive. The introduction of the MPAA movie ratings system allowed films with "R" content to get distribution and avoid prosecution and banning. the TV ratings system allows shows with adult content - especially animated shows - to exist.

Properly labeling a comic book allow the buyer of mature or adult material to seek it our without wading though the kiddie pool.

Miller closed his mind on the comics ratings issue and sermonized to the point of tedium

Miller was a clever artist who couldn't successfully ape Gil Kane so he swiped a few stylistic tricks from his European and Japanese influences. Dark Knight and Ronin worked but Miller got too much credit for Janson's inks and Varley's coloring. I'll give Miller credit for developing his "new" art style, basically a group of high contract lighting and silhouette tricks, which he's still milking 16 years later. Miller's Elektra and the concept of the villainess being a woman from the heroes past was lifted from Eisner's P'Gell. Miller's done some good stuff here and there but his Dark Knight sequel was a bird flipped in the face of his early supporters.

Interesting points. That said, I disagree about Miller being given too much credit on DKR. If it wasn't for Miller's storytelling prowess, DKR would be merely pretty pictures.

Shit, I can't get through non DKR Batman stories, except Year One and some rare stuff like Killing Joke. He is very good at repackaging characters to appeal to the non-fanboy adult population. How much money would this make with the racial stereotype sidekick, smiling Spirit and blue coat? There's a reason there's no hot selling Spirit comic out there. It needs to get with the times. There's a reason there's dark gritty mood inserted into this. Because it sells. comic book writer/artist out there. As Brians Life already mentioned, the new All Star B&R is a complete train wreck. The worst of Frank Miller's stuff is humorless dreck that sounds like a parody of himself. That's exactly what All Star B&R is.

Miller also gets far too much credit for "inventing" Batman's dark feel. First of all, Batman was a relatively dark comic to begin with. He didn't mind killing people first of all and there were times when he used guns. Then over the years he became campier. It was really Denny O'Neil who transformed Batman back into a serious superhero in the seventies. I'm not saying that Miller's take isn't unique, I'm just saying that O'Neil deserves the credit for making the character up to date.

I don't think the people casting a wary eye on this film are arguing for one hundred percent slavish devotion. There's no way that sidekick would fly today and that's obvious, and I'm pretty sure fans aren't chomping at the bit to keep him as a tiny minstrel. Someone mentioned this in the figurine thread, but Darwyn Cooke had a pretty successful run of a new Spirit once DC integrated him into their continuity. I actually haven't read the new one, so I don't even know how he may have been changed on ink, but I imagine Cooke didn't throw the proverbial baby out with the water. There's going to be a new creative team this year, so there is an audience. If someone has read the new series and cares enough to chime in with that perspective, that could offer more light. I'll stop kicking up dust. Thank you for numbering me as a goon, good sir. Blue is a small thing, and who cares if Greedo shot first right? =P Just kidding, don't murder me.

It references Eisner's signature use of lettering meshed into the environment of the comic. However, it still tells people that Frank Miller is also involved. Eisner strived to light his comic panels like a stage set so from what I've seen so far Miller isn't that far off. Also, how refreshing is it compared to the bland movie posters we've seen the past few years?

THAT made money. Whatever else you think of it-slow, goofy 11 songs, etc-casting-it was the #10 biggest movie of 1980. No joke. Made 50M here. You gotta triple that (almost) w/ inflation etc over the past 28 years to see just how much that actually made.

Director Altman always said-Popeye made money. Now I was under the impression both at the time and for years after, it was a huge bomb like the other movies you listed. But that ain't so. Go check it out at boxofficemojo or IMDB or whatever. IT was a big hit. Not all that great, mind-but-it did well.

300 and Sin City were garbage; boring, 'tough-guy-writing-for-ten-yea r-olds' without a real character in the bunch, and in 300's case, the film was so blatantly homoerotic it was actually hilarious. The Sin City comics are garbage; Dark Knight Strikes Again and All-Star Batman are beyond garbage, and 300 was the lamest homo fantasy ever committed to paper. Yeah, once, a long, long time ago, Miller wrote some pretty good comics, but it's been about 20 fucking years, and since that time he's turned out one piece of shit after another while geeky, virginal adolescents think his stuff is amazing because it directly addresses their shallow power fantasies, no characterization required.

Ever occur to any of you slobbering geniuses that "Sin City" looked like "The Spirit", which DID Come first, instead of the other way around? It's right there in front of you, auto-reflexive touch-holes, and you could see it if you weren't all in such a goddamn hurry to look like The MOST Reverential Eisner Devotee Of Them All.............even though I'd bet that 90% of you crybabies don't even OWN more two or three things by Mr. Eisner.

Yeah, this poster is just such shit, and especially since there are so many ultra-talented directors just clammering to tackle such a dated and basically irrelevant property. Oh sure, the Spirit in comic history context is huge but beyond a few 'more-informed-than-thou' historian types, the people who kiss Crumb's ass and such who have the nerve to complain that the new Spirit movie looks too much like Sin City WHICH IS NOIR YOU STUPID, COMPLAINING-ASS FUCKING DOUCHEBAGS! You're gonna actually sit there and bitch and say that that poster doesn't look sweet? You are full of shit and if these boards are going to be monitored at all someone should read these posts by these mind-numbing bitchers who knee-jerk a 'that sucks' but never explain why. Maybe you should have to supply a web link to your own work and website to even post negative feedback, just to show it comes from a place of someone who knows something whereof they fucking speak. You dicks piss me the fuck off sometimes.

Right On. Just who WOULD the whiners want to see handling a "Spirit" movie? Speilberg? Aronofsky? Cuaron? I think they'd prefer that NOBODY make a "Spirit" movie - that way, the character can remain their own private little treasure, the Timeless Artistic Creation that only they and they alone know about and can appreciate. Those of the the pinheads that even know who Will Eisner is, that is.... Except they create their own paradox that way. If "The Spirit" remains just another character in their basement collection, they get to go on deluding themselves that they have rare and discerning taste. But if "The Spirit" DOESN'T get made.....then they'll have to find new photos of Johansen and Mendes with which to manhandle themselves. Decisions, Decisions.....

Those motherscratchers need to go bend their skippy to Bud Plant and leave the action flicks to those that appreciate it. Who would have thought we'd live to see the day when a solid talent (mostly the guys great) like Frank Miller would get dissed for making a movie like this. It's only because a Frank Miller is involved that properties as obscure as The Spirit even get made which, by the way, assures Miller that he's gonna get a modest box office return at best versus what he could get if he shat out another Robo Cop or some other Hollywood bilge.

These TBr's are the same spoiled assholes that five years ago begged and screamed and rent their garments for Miller to be "unleashed" from his bondage to the the Hollywood Goons that "stifle his art" - so when FM DOES get off the plantation and starts following his "vision", he's a "Sellout" and a "hack" and he's "ripping off his fans that made him so golly-gosh successful". What, you shitheads think that Miller is doing this movie because he thinks he's gonna get rich just by pandering to you fucking closed-masturbatory-society brats? Good Fucking God, you dickless babies really do think the entire fucking world should revolve around your wishes, don'tcha? No Wonder shitloads of you voted for Bush - those of you that were old enough, anyway. FM does this BECAUSE you demanded he have the "right" to do so, and you all ratified it with your ticket to "Sin City". Quit your goddamn snivelling, stop typing with your dicks, get off yer fat asses and do something better if yer all so fucking bright and talented and insightful. Try making friends with a visionary like Will Eisner and listen to his wisdom, be inspired by his example instead of just slouching around these boards and circle-jerking to the shitty tune of your envy and yer own pathetic self-contempt, ya tribe of ADD dorks.

Dear god if every film looked like Sin City, 300, and The Spirit, I would slit my fucking wrists. These in no way feel like real films. They feel like green screen demo videos to show what the technology is capable of. Real nice-- we get it, you can insert whatever background you want over the green! WOW!! The weather department has been doing it for years on the local news!! Great stuff guys! This looks like it will suffer from the same stigma as Sin City and 300-- absolutely no sense of life. Things feel fake and plastic, with no soul. I'm not saying the griminess-- obviously in both you can sprinkle a shit load of mud and rain and grime on things-- but that doesnt give it life. It still feels fake and manufactured, like the filmmakers are pulling one big prank on all of us and we are stupid enough to continue paying them for it. Boycott this piece of shit or we will see hundreds more films just like this. Lazy lazy filmmaking.

This sucks so bad. Yes, it's a teaser with likely ZERO actual film footage. But it's done in Miller's style. Not Eisner's. The Spirit should be technicolor noir, high spirited, action and adventure. Spielberg would be perfect really, given a good script. But not Miller. Not a fading hack comic writer who's long been a cliche. Miller never understood noir, which is why Sin City comics and film were so bad...and now he's gotten his mitts on The Spirit. Oh well. Cross this one off the list.

A title page for one of Miller's Daredevil issues, which I can imagine was probably Eisner inspired. The font and the color scheme on the poster and it's border make me want to hang myself though, it's like marketing guy at the studio was like, 'Frank Miller, huh? Okay a little 300 with the font, and Sin City with the color scheme and BAM! Poster..I'm gonna take lunch now. '

It's the execution that seems lacking. And the 300 font for the Spirit title is slightly fucked as well. Clearly the studio is trying to ride whatever coattails it can of 300 and Sin City. That said this movie will most likely suck. If you've ever read the book Eisner/Miller which is basically just a conversation between the two men it's pretty clear that Frank is at the opposite end of comics than Will, and he doesn't even see it, which is probably why he's directing the Spirit. All that wouldn't bother me but the truth is that there was a great Spirit movie out there that never got made. It was something Brad Bird tried to make for years, the Iron Giant, Incredibles, and Ratatooie, Brad Bird. And as a fan of Will's work that's the movie I would have loved to see.
