I watched the movie, mostly because my buddy wanted to watch it and Chris Carter said that even viewers, who never saw an episode of the show would get it (Well...he lied.).
Now it's on Pay TV again and I'm trying to watch it. I don't wanna say that it sucks, because it doesn't, but IMO it's kinda dated and nothing I would buy on DVD. (At least today. Probably if I would be a fan from the beginning, I would)

I haven't read this TB, so pls pardon me if any of this is repetitive. The X-Files is largely a casualty of overblown black helicopter paranoia from the 1990's. It's dried up and it shows. As an aside, I really like the actors involved and always wanted to see them break out of their respective television cliches, but it seems neither has had that much luck.

Seriously, I'm not one to get all amped about nostalgic shit, but I watched the show because I liked Mulder and Scully. If the story that week was good, well, so much the better, but even the dumbest Scully/Mulder era episodes were usually pretty enjoyable. (maybe not that one where Scully is possessed by the tattoo...) The plot of this second movie is a real distant second to the fact that the motherfuckers are back in action at all.

Besides, if the X-Files is so dated why are there so many current tv shows (Lost, Heroes, Supernatural, etc.) that undoubtedly have TXF as inspiration? The problem with the X-Files has always been Chris Carter, the man had a good idea, but after a certain point he didn't know what to do with it anymore. I hope he delivers with this movie

This movie is the biggest So Fucking What of the year. The show consistently failed to ever have any sort of pay off (anyone else remember the two hour season premier where they FINALLY find unequivocal proof of aliens in the form of the space ship, then never again mention said ship for the rest of the series? The first movie from A DECADE ago was a waste of two hours. I'll save you all eleven bucks: He saves her ass w/o expressing his love, they foil the plot of the Men In the Shadows yet any actual proof of a hidden agenda is either non existent or destroyed, and the closing shot is a pan of some huge alien influenced complex full of three headed embryos while creepy piano music plays.

1. The first poster is a troll.

2. "The show consistently failed to ever have any sort of pay off"

Wrong. The show did PAY OFF. The "Full Disclosure" episodes in Season 6 ***FREAKING EXPLAINED THE ENTIRE PLOT***

The problem with X-Files is that after the Full Disclosure eps (Two Fathers/One Son), there was virtually no reason to leave the show on the air. It would be like the LOST writers getting everyone OFF the island, then explaining the numbers and Smokey and Jacob but renewing LOST for 3 more years.

3. "the two hour season premier where they FINALLY find unequivocal proof of aliens in the form of the space ship"

Huh? They do find a UFO in the Biogenesis episodes. And Krycek later goes UFO hunting later in the series in Requiem. It might help if you watch the show.

4. "they foil the plot of the Men In the Shadows "

The new movie is a MOTW, so again. No.

But after ending the show with Mulder on trial for his life (ala Seinfeld) and then CSM, with his long hair and Indian chick, gets blown up in a Mexican adobe, and then Mulder and Scully run off to Canada... Really? You think you just jump back into it like nothing sucked before?

Watched from Squeeze in season one - didn't miss an episode until the end. A standalone movie rather than mythology makes sense at this point, although hopefully it leads to a final movie/mini-series, or a Next Gen series about whatever powers William has. Btw seasons 8 and 9 are seriously under-rated as is Robert Patrick. I know a large portion of the net fanbase had a never-ending hardon for DD (I was back on the Delphi forums before FOX had anything worthwhile, so the image of whiny shippers and noromos is still fresh in my mind), and rightfully so - Mulder/Scully made the series - but compare the final two years to the X-Files Comedy Year that was Season 7 (when the writers started believing TV Guide when it said the show was better at being funny than most comedies and David Duchovney started mailing in his performances). It's night and day - in season eight the show got scary again. I've been watching seasons 6- 9 on DVD (just started 9) for the first time since back in the day and damn they hold up well outside of the second half of season 7. Kathy Griffin on The X-Files. Someone abduct me and take that memory away! Rant over. Bring us a decent movie, and a follow-up/proper close to the show... or a NextGen concept.

Yes, the overall story pretty much went to shit after season 6, but 7 had plenty to offer regardless. I like The Amazing Maleeni, even moreso since Ricky Jay, the real-life magician who played Maleeni, was in The Prestige (he was also a consultant on the tricks in the movie). The reason this is so cool is that the impossible trick in The Amazing Maleeni involved him having a twin, just like Christian Bale's character in The Prestige. OK, there were also stupid episodes like X-Cops (shot like a COPS show) and Hollywood A.D. (a movie is made based on the X-Files).

I recently bought the complete set, I was sure I'd find it dated having not watched it since it aired. It surprised me in the fact that it's better than 95% of tv shows around nowadays. How anyone can profess to like Supernatural after having watched the Xfiles is beyond me, even the worst episodes from seasons 8+9 contain more originality than that show. Up until that point X files had the amazing ability to be dark, quirky, funny and even pack an emotional punch at times. I love Galactica, I loved Carnivale and I loved Firefly but they don't tick ALL the boxes that the Xfiles did - They're not worse shows for it they just don't contain the variety which I think made up the best of the Xfiles.

They've just discovered Aliens are coming to take over the planet. Mulder has been sentenced to death. And now after six years of hiding away from all that - they decide to come back for a random case? - What's next?.. they're still calling each other Mulder & Scully.

I agree about The Amazing Maleeni - great episode. In fact the first half of season seven was just fine. Hungry (from the monster's point of view), Maleeni, The Goldberg Variation. But then came X-Cops, Hollywood AD, Fight Club, etc. I know a lot of people loved Hollywood AD but I found it tiresome and cliche. Mind you I also find my meatloaf shallow and pedantic. DarkJediStoops - that's actually a pretty cool idea, and could still be viable as a prequel of sorts if they do it before the stars get too much older.

...but not by much. Mainly because season 7 had First Person Shooter and Fight Club. 2 Horrible episodes (worst in the entire run of the show in my opinion). Chimera, Sein und Zeit, Closure, Signs and Wonders, Goldberg Variation and Amor Fati weren't that good either. There's also the problem that Duchovny made Mulder very unlikable with his phoned-in performance. The problem with the last season is that most episodes were just tired.

Are the size of Scully's shoulder pads in the first season, and the giant cell phones. Other than that, I'd rather watch the worst Mulder and Scully episodes than almost anything on primetime today, with the exception of Lost, Dexter, BSg, and maybe one or two others.

They should have done the future Invasion - theres not a whole lot of point in this being stand alone, I don't think it will win any new fans. Perhaps they didn't have enough money , perhaps Carter thinks if this does well they can come back and do the invasion... No way is season 9 better than season 7. Hollywood AD was ace. I never liked the funny episodes first time round, always thought they were a waste. Watching the series the second time round the mythology became a lot more coherent too.
Looks like David and Carter need some cash.

off hand, i do not recall S9 of XF mate. i remember some lame episodes, so yeah, that was probably that. as for Lost, it was sold to me as a "masterpiece", but i gave up after a couple of episodes of S2 - it is directionless and meaningless, yet seems to have convinced normal, intelligent people that it is brilliant and they all seem to think they know what they are doing. they don't - like Prison Break, for instance, it was a 1 season gig that got so popular they expanded it, and boy does law of diminishing returns spring to mind. that said, each to their own, playa, dig what you dig.

1. XF Season 9 was a disaster. After David left the show, it was clear that Chris Carter had no idea what the heck he was doing. And killing the Lone Gunmen and Scully giving away William = LAME.

2. LOST S2 was "directionless" at the very beginning. But, unlike shows like Prison Break that spiral out of control, the LOST writers pulled the show together brilliantly towards the latter half of Season 2. And LOST S3 and S4 have been friggin' amazing. And to top it off, LOST has been mapped out to its very end. There are exactly 40 episodes left until the very end, and the entire show it already moving towards its endgame.

Anyone know if any other X-regulars will appear?

I know we've got those insipid-looking new agents (tell me, if new characters aren't played be people who will draw a new audience, why not use the old actors?), but does anyone have CONFIRMATION of whether any more of the old crew will appear?

I see Pileggi in the cast list on IMDB, but I thought there was some debate about whether he was actually involved. Watching just Mulder and Scully for 2 hours would be perfectly fine entertainment, but after all this time, it's a natural fan reaction to want the plot to thicken and start drawing more of the old cast out of retirement.

gotham_night, I like that take on it.

Hopefully they'll make it as fun and fan-indulging as a sweeps episode would be.

Though I wonder--how will the movie resolve? Even though it's a "standalone" story, detached from all the mythology, what will it take for the story to leave us all satisfied at the end, and not left hanging in a bad way? That may be a tall task.

1. oh, that was that series, was it? yeah, i think everyone kind of saw that as bad. i wasn't as against the T1000 being in XF as most seem to be, but much like Timothy Dalton as Bond, if they don't get decent stuff to work with, they are not going to shine. 2. you are clearly a Lost fan, man, so nice one for you. when the whole thing is done i'll give it another try with the box sets, fair enough? as a writer (journo, nothing fancy) one learns to pick up when people are slumming it, and L2 was slumming it i'm afraid. 3. how do you put a space between paragraphs on this forum? can't work it out mate.

That's the core of Duchovny's fandom - a hen brigade of chubby bleached blondes with black roots who worship the earth he condescends to walk on. I saw a video on the web that some chick took at the Comicon of a special flick the XF producers put together, and it was a bunch of clips of cuddly-wuddly Mulder and Scully moments, and unfortunately you can hear the sound and I swear the woman photographing the special flick was having an orgasm. Seriously. That would jack off some people, I guess, but I found it freaking embarrassing. So you see, kids, it doesn't matter how Chris Carter subtitles this sequel, Duchovny's chick brigade and Anderson's lezbo fanbase will rush to see it. As for the rest of us one-time XF fans, meh. Been there, done that, wore out the T-shirt hell of a long time ago. Why would I pay 8 bucks to see a 2-hour episode when I can buy 3 classic XF eps out of the VHS bargain bin at Wal-mart?
