A washed up, depressed Dan Dreiberg having put on a little weight went a very long way in the book, giving it a little punch of realism. Would have been cool to see that preserved in the movie. Nothing like a fat superhero to turn the genre on its ear...

It still very much has that classical Egyptian/Greek vibe, and doesn't look anywhere near as gay as the outfit in the comic. The costume changes for this film were necessary. Watchmen is a classic, brilliant story, but some of those character designs in today's movie market would have non-fans - i.e., most of the people going to see the movie - howling in the aisles with laughter. They looked like the cast of MYSTERY MEN - a flat-out comedic film. Snyder did what he had to do to make some of these guys look cool. The fact that Rorschach's appearance is virtually unchanged from the source material is evidence that they must have tried Ozy's look out, and it must have sucked. This is an acceptable compromise.

For what it's worth, here's how I see it: Ozymandias is a superhero version of Oprah. He's all about inspiring people to embrace their inner beauty and such. He's also targeting children with his products, hence his toy line. The photo of him on the Internet, however, is of someone who seems a bit creepy. Now, if Oz has TWO outfits, and this is the one he wears at the end...when he's given up on trying to appeal to humanity's better nature, fine. But if the black garb is pre-New York Oz, then he doesn't look terribly inspiring. Though I understand your point overall about costume changes.

Look at the figure in 1 of 2 ways. A) this could be Night Owl BEFORE he retired. B) This costume is more like sturdy armor, designed for a fit Dan. If an out of shape Dan puts it on, it will be tight and uncomfortable but the basic shape of the suit will remain.....mostly. Who knows, there could be a one liner when he tries it on where he comments on how tight it is. Would get laughs for sure.

The 300 comic wasn't all that deep to begin with so you can't really fault Snyder for making such a literal adpatation. He respects the medium and seems willing to keep as much of the comic and story intact as possible so I have faith that this film is going to deliver. I haven't seen or read anything that concerns me. Here's to positive thinking. Cheers.

Adrian's costume is suppose to look like a joel schumacher batman and Robin look. The graphic novel watchmen was a satire on everything we knew about comics. This movie is going to not only follow that template but it will also satire all we know about Super Hero Movies. Thus making Adrian who's character is the bad guy and fake and person who is all about the money modeled after joel shumachers Batman films which were made all about the money and no artistic goals. It's not that hard to understand. Adrians picture looks just like it could have been taken from a Batman and Robin photo shoot, WHICH IS THE POINT.

as you say, Watchmen was sly, insider satire, but what you are talking about sounds more like spoof. If that is the case, this will end up a lot lik Mystery Men (which I liked for what it was despite the missing of Flaming Carrot), and that is what I fear most. The comics didn't stand back and riducule from a distance...it held the comic cliches tight to the chest, almost stroking them like a pet.

Because it was pretty much a frame for frame adaptation of the book. And if you're going to talk shit about Frank Miller I will knock you the fuck out. Next to Alan Moore Miller is god, and you aren't fit to lick his, or Zack Snyder's taints. Comic book adaptations are often hollow misrepresentations of the works they're based on, (any Marvel film applies so far other than the original Blade) But 300 was spot on. Read some fucking history, Sparta wasn't known for deep thought or philosophy. They were a WARRIOR SOCIETY you fuckin' imbecile.

What fucking depth did you expect in 300? What kind of deep, meaningful message was missing in that film? Would a few heartfelt moments have broadened it's appeal to include someone as clearly sophisticated as yourself? Pretentious twat. Get over yourself, and try reading the book before you talk shit about the film. Miller liked it well enough, and since he wrote the fucker, I think he's a better judge than some nobody trying to elevate his own sense of self by whining about "depth". Spartans weren't much more than finely honed killing machines. Perhaps you got them mixed up with the Athenian boy lovers. Maybe you'd prefer a film about that. As for Watchmen, why don't you shut the fuck up and let them get the film out before you start shitting yourself with nerd angst. And Skeptical only has one "k" in it, douche.

Film and books are too seperate mediums, one should not have to read the book to understand the film. should everyone who saw "There Will Be Blood' read "Oil!"? Calm the fuck down. 300 was alright, nothing deep or anything, just ok.
That's my point jay.
by SCYTHEOFLUNA
Apr 19th, 2008
01:46:26 PM
It wasn't supposed to be deep. The book wasn't deep, Sparta wasn't deep. The film is virtually identical to the book. You don't have to have read the book to understand the film. My point was that for better or worse the film was a direct adaptation, and to call it eye candy with no depth illustrates a lack of familiarity with the source material, or the historical fact that the Spartans weren't known for great depth, so his criticism was pointless netnerd bullshit. If you thought the film was just okay, good for you. Personally I like my film adaptations to reflect the books their based on. That's kinda' the fucking point. And yes, I do think people should try reading the books these things are based on before they run their mouths or keyboards about depth. 300 was exactly what it was supposed to be.

I dunno, I just think that as long as they get the essence of the material, it doesn't have to be word for word, image for image. I mean, yeah Batman Begins took some liberties, but the motivations and message were the same as the comics, as opposed to Burton's Batman, which was really just a Burton flick with characters that happen to be from batman. As long as the get the essence of the material, which apparentally they did with 300 (I haven't read it) then that's fine by me.
