Jim and Pam

I love this show and I loved the new episode, but I pray that the Jim/Pam relationship doesn't turn into a Ross/Rachel from Friends type of thing. It already annoys the fuck out of me when NBC's ad people use the relationship in the commercials while the voice over guy uses his "special episode" whispery voice.

Today, on the way from the bank, I was listening to NPR, and they were broadcasting a local school board meeting. I found it fascinating how they were arguing about something, but it was impossible to figure out exactly what it was. Anyway, every time they referred to the superintendent of the school board, I kept correcting it in my head with "Supernintendo". Just wanted to share that.

I'm guessing the implication as that Jim and Pam will "do it" as the sitcoms used to say. Um, exactly how long have they been dating? Hasn't it been a while? I woulda thought they'd have "gotten it on" all ready. Since we usually stick to the confines of the work day, I just assumed we didn't hear about it. Maybe the Jim/Pam dilemma be that Jim's too quick on the draw when faced with ending the sexual tension brewing for years...

Maybe she just forgets to put on her underwear or people notice she's wearing the same clothes from the day before (getting flashbacks).

More speculation: After last week, I'm wondering if Jan and Micheal will be together much longer. Perhaps that is why Micheal goes "clubbing" with Dwight - guys nite out after a break-up. Man, just thinking of those two on the prowl is disturbingly funny.§

Phone call to hot and juicy Wendy. Bought the ring ring a week after dating (squee). Steve Carell trying not to laugh during the "fruit of your loom" pep talk.

The Bad: The "Five". No lines for Kelly or Angela. Toby is Toby. The chair model was crossed eyed in an inbreeded kitten type of way.

Though I love this show... they really are going to far with Michael. He got dumber and more embarrassingly socially awkward these past two episodes. Maybe we can chalk this last one up to his break up with Jan, but I don't want him to be too much of a cartoon.

What makes this show great at times is the reliance on the whole ensemble cast. I know many of them get short-changed in episodes, but I like the fact that we can have every character in the same room and at least get reaction shots out of them. Yes, this show has become the "reaction shot sitcom", but it's a nice way of keeping characters in. Amazing how just a glance from Toby can still be completely in character.

But, Jim, you bought it after your first date. Jeez, buddy, take it down a notch. Just enjoy the dating for a little while. Though, I like the realism in the fact that we have character discussing marriage before a formal proposal. That happens a helluva lot in the real world these days. It's not always a complete surprise.

I am an Office fan - hell the dvds stay in my player 24-7 and I let them play in the BG as I go about my house business - but something has happened. The writers (I know BJ wrote this weeks) seem to think they can "get by" by just having the characters doing -- and when I say "doing" I mean it doesn't matter what they're doing as long as it's not sitting. The show was soooooooo damn good in the beginning, should have known it would be too good to last. This weeks episode was the WORST of all the episodes ever.

is exactly something Michael would do, and I think this is another intentional parallel between the two characters. However, since everyone swoons over Jim, and treats him like THEY'RE dating him, they think something this crazy is romantic, whereas if Michael did it, everyone would be saying how sad he is.

Make no mistake, I still love the show and laugh out loud at it, but it's clear, just from how the plots seldom even are office-related any more (I know this is a bit of hyperbole), that the show has changed, as well as how ridiculous Michael has got. It's fine, and obviously it would be difficult to tell 100 episodes exclusively about Office stuff, but they must have thought of this at conception, and maybe sprinkling in more non-office episodes from the start wouldn't be turning off so many people now. The show IS different than when it started. The core message and basics are the same, but the show has changed.

You know what I'm talking about - it's the moment that the cringing gets so painful that you have to mute the tv to save yourself. My mutable moment this week was the coffee shop, when the Landlady first runs into Michael. I was soundless until the commercial break. Also, that scene was very reminiscent of the UK Office, when Ricky was trying to find a date and met the online girl at the pub. "Oh for f....."

Jim/Pam = Best written couple on TV
by Mel Gibsteinberg
Apr 18th, 2008
01:47:13 PM
Wow, the "critics" on this site are impressing me with their ability to say things even more stupid than an Abdul rant on AI. The simple fact is this, the show is in its 4th season, and if it had remained in only The Office, it would have slowed down to a crawl and there would have been a lot of fans leaving. Instead, the writers are having fun throwing their beloved characters into new and bizzare situations in an effort to further develop them and see how they will react. This seems to piss off certain purists who only want the show to do what the British version did. But the Brit version was only like 2 or 3 seasons, right? This show is already longer, and I for one am fine to allow this show to do more broader comedic stunts in an effort to keep it fresh. The converse would be more retreads of the same Office moments, or worse, no Office at all.

I laughed last night, laughed hard, and to me that is all that is important. This is a freaking American TV sit-com, not some perfectly crafted novel on corporate life and politics, people need to lighten up!

Back to Jim/Pam
by Mel Gibsteinberg
Apr 18th, 2008
01:55:36 PM
So back on the topic of Jim and Pam, here is what I love about their TV relationship:

They started as friends, and they remain close friends to this day.

Just because they are dating, they have not turned into some syrupy lovey-dovey couple.

They still tease each other and make each other laugh, that is a great picture of a real relationship.

They don't get caught up in wacky misunderstandings over past girlfriends, new "female/male" threats, or some stupid scenario just in order to build "tension". The writers are smart enough to realize that in real relationships, people talk, they share, and if something happens, they don't hide secrets and continue to lie and come up with more and more outlandish lies which lead to hilarious misunderstandings of epic proportions. That kind of shit only happens on "Friends" and I am happy the Office has not gone there.

where the show takes place doesn't matter - it's the fact that the characters do not act as they did just one season ago. Television is all about familarity and frustration - change that too much and you end up with the episode we got last night. Pam and Jim are only there to irritate people who want them to get together - now that they are moving in this direction it's only a matter of time where people start tuning out

The characters have changed SOOOOO much since last season? I have all 3 seasons on DVD, and I see very little, actual, change. Elements of their character have been revealed, but there has been no dramatic change.

This argument is just for those who feel the need to defend their position of not liking the Office, despite the fact that it is still popular and a well liked show.

Actually, I LOVE the show, I really do. I watch my dvds constantly and a, always surprised at how much I still laugh when I watch "George Foreman grill, Back from Vacation, The Bat episode and most of all the Convention and Gay Witch Hunt". Can you honestly tell me last night's episode was 1/10th as good as any of the above? The show has changed and so have the characters - Jenna Fisher and the other leads are all doing movies and this is now a second paycheck - not that they have lost interest in the show, but they have other interests now and have nothing to prove on tv, which is the front and back door that leads to and away from feature films. And I don't know how anyone can disagree with me that television is all about familiararity and frustration - Gilligan's Island, Galactica, Lost in Space, Kung Fu, Wonder Years, Freinds, The Prisoner, Quantum Leap and so many others all have an endless quest built into them - and people watch shows like friends and the office to be reunited with friends.

This show has not jumped the shark. I will say, that I was really disappointed by the first half of this season. Michael became a Homer Simpson clone, and everything was just way too over-the top (see 'Meredith gets rabies'). But I think these past two episodes have been great. I think Michael is the Michael from season 2 again, and I think they even found a nice balance between the cartoon crazy Jan from recent, and the Jan from the first two seasons.
