Avatar is one of the best shows on television! (It's the show that gets me through each Lost hiatus)... It's got everything- action, comedy, romance... Each character is masterfully crafted, the story is amazing and the pacing is top notch. Those who pass this show by because it's a Nickelodeon cartoon are really missing out. Additionally, while I'm not a huge fan of M. Night, he is a huge fan of this series. I legitimately think that he's going to do his damndest to do "The Last Airbender" justice. Here's hoping...

After a pretty good start, M. Night has pissed moviegoers off more and more with each successive flick. I barely got through SIGNS, and after The Village I wanted to hunt the little fucker down and kick him square in the nuts and get my money back. Didn't even go to see Lady In The Water; bought it as a previously-viewed rental dvd so he wouldn't make a penny off of me.

Lady In The Water (which wasn't nearly as bad as everyone said it was...probably just got hate cause of who directed it and how he came up with the movie to begin with) So I think his twisting days are behind him. I'm expecting a pretty faithful adaptation of the (better than it deserves to be being on nickelodeon not in the 80's/early '90s) pseudo anime series.

to see how this turns out. All the planets and stars are going to have to line up for this to work. I LOVE ATLAB (and I dont think the general public is so retarded as to confuse the two movies with Avatar in the title but whatever) and I've always known that they could make an amazing series of films, again, only if all the right things happen. Tone, look, and esp. the kids just to name a few. The potential for this in the right hands would be insane. I'm not a big M.Night hater like most on here, but I'm not sold on him helming this series. GDT is the go-to-person these days that we geeks piss and moan about and say should direct whatever the current "could-be-great-if-only" movie is being discussed, BUT I really think he'd be a great fit for this universe. Oh well. I'm not saying M.Night will do a shit job, I just hope its all it should and can be. The key thing is the kids. The Potter films are a success b/c they nailed the casting for the kids. ATLAB needs that, b/c if the kids are wrong none of the other shit matters.

The performances were, for the most part, fantastic. For me, Bardem sort of had the opposite trajectory. He started out like a caricature (the look on his face as he strangles the guy with the handcuffs is a little much, I think), but after that he became a much more natural presence (in my eyes, at least). Brolin and Jones were fantastic, I felt. What's more, the film is consistently pushing you forward with a great sense of pacing (at least I thought so). I liked that the film is about ideas (fate, chance, escalation of violence, etc) but integrates them into a story pretty flawlessly (although I think the coin tossing, while a good metaphor, seems too Two Face-like for me to take it all that seriously). I donno. I just dug the flick, I guess. Also thought Zodiac deserved a Best Picture nod.

Why not call it Aang: The Last Airbender? Too few syllables? Most of this movie's success will depend on casting the children, and there M Night's got a pretty fair track record. I just hope, it doesn't lose something in translation. One of the things I love about the series is all the attention paid to little nuances of character development, but who knows if there'll be time to develop all the main characters (at least five kids, not counting the extended member's of Zuko's family) or if like the Next Generation movies it will turn into the Picard and Data show. Still, I look forward to seeing how M will shoot martial arts action sequences, that's definitely new territory for him.

I'm a fan. Village and Lady in the Water were disappointing, mainly due to the story, but were still far more interesting than the vast majority of Hollywood schlock. The guy can film a sense of tension as well as anybody in the business. And the cartoon Avatar is pretty good. I'm hoping that Night's direction mixed with somebody else's setting and story will work well together.

It's not up to M. Night to decide what his film is called in this case. It's up to the courts, intellectal property lawyers, and behind-the-scenes corporate hatchet men. Cameron got dibs on "Avatar" (thank god!) for a number of reasons, thus "Avatar" is now NOT available for use in any way to M. Night. You might not like it, Violator90, but "The Last Airbender" is all we're going to get. I've seen Nickolodeon's cartoon a few times with my nephews and enjoyed it. The animation is great for a tv show, the storylines are intense, and the action, when it happens, is explosive. That said, I'm one of those people who thinks M. Night is exactly the wrong person to direct this. He's a talented director for one trick pony movies, I'll give him that, but he's shown me nothing since "Unbreakable," and even that film was marginal. I give him credit for the multiple duties he performs making his own films, but I don't like his style or inability to create memorable characters. He's paper thin all the way. But maybe I'll be surprised by his take on "The Last Airbender." I really hope so.

I haven't seen Unbreakable or Lady in the Water. I liked The Sixth Sense well enough and I thought Signs could have been amazing if it ended more strongly. The Village is... meh. The guy has an eye, though. He ought to either collaborate on his writing or try something that isn't so sci-fi/fantastical. That said, The Happening looks like it could be good. As for this Avatar show, I've never seen it. Don't really know why M. Night wants to do it (I think he said he watched it with his kids and got hooked), but whatever.

I like him too and Unbreakable is my favorite. I think a lot of people over look the subtle ways he framed Willis throughout that film. More often than not Willis is surrounded by rectangles or squares to make him look like he's in a comic book panel. There's quite a bit of subtlety in that movie that I think some people miss. M. Night gets a lot of slack for having a couple stinkers...so what? How often do we hear about movies like Marnie, The Manxman, or Under Capricorn? Hitchcock bombed all the time but when he hit it he hit it well...just like I think will be M. Night's future. Most nose-pickers out there think Tarantino is a great director, so what do the masses know?

...the word Avatar. In ATLA, the word is integral to the very plot of the show. Aang is the all-powerful Avatar, the only one in the world. With his death comes the next Avatar, then another after that. It's not just a word: it's a title, a term used to describe this elemental phenomenon. In James Cameron's film, an Avatar is literally someone's Avatar--an alien body into which they project their consciousness and live alternate lives. In Last Airbender, the name "AVATAR is arbitrarily chosen to describe the person who can bend all elements. There is no good reason this person is called an "Avatar".

Yes, the Avatar can be considerd "divine", or at the very least, something from a higher state. He is often referred to as "the bridge between the spirit world and the physical world" Cameron's use is more of the current idea of a representation of someone, like you would use online or in a game -- which is only an adaptation of the earlier meaning. So yes, I would say that "Avatar" is used more literally in A:TLA

Kind of sucks that they aren't able to use the name but this movie is going to kill come Summer 2010. It's a fantastic piece of property and hearing that M. Night is getting inspiration from Miyazaki just makes me smile uncontrollably. I love Shymalan, only thing I didn't like of his was Lady in the Water, but The Happening looks great. Also, if you've never seen the series don't knock it. The series is phenomenal and just cause it's on Nickelodeon doesn't mean its only for kids.

I agree. Avatar is a great cartoon series with totally adult story lines. My wife and I are in our 50s and enjoy the heck out of it. Nick was running 2 or 3 episodes a night and we got hooked. I'll give it to the man, Sixth Sense was a great way to introduce himself to the world and I really remember and enjoyed that movie. However, everything he's made since has been absolutely crap. I hate the fact that when you go see his movies, you HAVE to have a TWIST. The guy has ruined his own career.

...but "Unbreakable" was a great film. "Signs" was good too, and I personally liked "The Village" a lot. Many people were disappointed because there were no real monsters in "The Village", but thats what I love about that movie. A movie about village elders who create fake monsters to keep a village in fear to supposedly keep them safe - that movie is probably the best political statement about the current administration for the last 7 years. But "Lady in the Water" was crap. Thats okay though, because it was a risky misstep. All great directors have them. People expect more from Night because his first blockbuster (not his first film) was so exceptional, so he's held to a higher standard, but as long as he learns from his mistakes, I'll still be in the theater for his films. He has a great ability to create emotional tension in the simplest of scenes, and that is a true gift. I think that defines his films more than the twist ending.

I may have expected a different type of movie when I watched "Lady in the Water". I heard Night adapted it from a bedtime story he told his kids, so perhaps if I watched it from that point of view, I might like it better. Maybe I'll give it another chance in the future. But when the kid started decoding cereal boxes, I was itching to walk out, and when the giant hawk swooped in at the end, I regretted not doing so.

It really surprises me that there aren't more Avatar: The Last Airbender fans on AICN. Its one of the best shows on television, with action thats not in the traditional Japanime style, but really very cinematic and easily better than the action in a lot of big budget SciFi. A really epic great storyline too, that has been set out for three seasons and no more. I urge anyone who is not watching to check out the ratings for Avatar on imdb or TV.com or the reviews on amazon, and you'll realize what a fantastic show you've been missing. I'm a f an of some of Night's movies and not others, but even if you hate him, you have to admit that the guy has style, and it sounds like he wants to do the series justice, so I'm really looking forward to it. Also, Does anyone know when Avatar is supposed to come back on tv? There are such few episodes left, and no scheduling information.

...until you've seen it. Then I'm confident you'll have nothing to bitch about. It's damn fine storytelling. I flipped past that channel I don't know how many times, addressing that weird-ass 6 legged flying bison with a "feh" each time. Once I gave it a chance I was promptly hooked and now I never miss it. I've been catching the most recent episodes of the third season on Comcast On Demand. Regarding who should best use the title? ATLA without a doubt. I mean, I have a super 8 movie of my "Iron Man" flick I've been working on for 15 years, about a guy really into vitamins and kale, but I don't think I have any great claim to the title. Cameron loses this argument imho.

Also why doesn't someone just fucking give this guy the rights to either make the piolet and produce a new series of Twilight Zones. Or the rights to a new movie? So then his movies will have The Twlight Zone Presents: Blah Blah, rather then his dumb name. He ain't no Hitchcock either.

Thanks for clearing that up. But still I have to direct my "disappointment" at some one. As for Cameron working on HIS Avatar movie; to be honest, I actually thought it was the Nick Avatar he was working on. I never heard anything about the Avatar he's working on until I read reports on the plot. But if "avatar" is intellectal property then the same could be said about "super" correct? Then why did SUPERBAD use the word super? Since the world at large does connect "super" with the Man of Steel more often. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know. The lawyers have the last word, but you still have to wonder if there could have been at least SOME kind of comprimise as to using "avatar." Just saying.

Is it one of those animes where the characters fight some enemy, lose, train for a few episodes, fight the enemy again, win, fight a stronger enemy, lose, train for a few episodes, etc, etc? (i.e. Naruto, Dragonball Z, etc?) If not I might just give it a watch.

I know exactly what you mean about the run-of-the-mill anime series. There are no badges, gyms, matches, trainers or endless training to go up against the omnipotent alien du jour or bitter nemesis. It's an epic story that surprises me every time and has deep, multidimensional, complex characters that you understand and feel for (even the "bad guys".) I have watched it from the beginning, and really liked it, but around about "Tales of Bah-Sing-Se" I loved it.

...I should say there is some training, ultimately to defeat a bitter nemesis, but it's not along the lines of DRagonball, where you can miss a few weeks and return to find our heroes styill training for that big fight vs. Cell or whoever. It's substantive storytelling. Oh yeah and Mako rocks it.
