If you've played any GTA (from III onward) you shouldn't have any problem with 4. The only major mechanic change is with the gunplay, but the early stages teach you all the new techniques. (Gunplay, cover system, driving, etc.)

I played the game on a 360 but I was told over and over that the difference in the two versions is trivial. Aside from the downloadable content (no date given yet), the two versions are damn near identical. In fact, Jeronimo had been playing the game on a PS3 because he told me at one point to hit the "circle" button instead of B.

The driving in the previous GTA games is some of the best arcade driving in any game. Just the right side of realistic but fun.

Agree about the shooting and fighting though but from what i've been reading they've been completely overhauled, new aiming systems, you can make use of cover, blind fire, aim at different body parts. The hand to hand combat has punch/kick/block buttons not just one button.

But I must admit, I'm getting very hyped for this one. I don't think there's a game being released this year that I want more than this.

At first I was confused as to why all the characters' faces look like those of claymation cavemen. But even as developers approach the peak of this generation, they'l always have to compromise. GTA 4 will have a huge amount of detail, and that means that some aspects of the visuals won't hold acandle to the likes of Gears of War, Call of Duty 4 and Bioshock.

But who cares about character models if the city looks that amazing?

The multiplayer also sounds fantastic, and my only concern is that I won't have enough people to play it with (I don't mind playin with strangers, but these things are always somuch better if it's a bunch of your pals online). I'm thinking a designated Xbox live night from May onwards. Dorky, but hella fun...

Ryu and War Machine were a truly invincible combo.

And NomoredirtyjokespleaseweareYan ks: the gameplay of MvsC2 was perhaps better, but the atmosphere of the first one (with its famous settings and musics) is second to none IMO. Ten years later I still play the first game, while the second one I only dust off if I wanna select an Iron Man/Ryu/War Machine combo; and preferably with the sound off (the "I'm gonna take you for a ride" cue gives me AIDS every time I hear it).

The game was supposed to have been out in October. Since then I've discovered Saints Row, a far superior GTA type game, more stuff to do, slightly better graphics. And there's a sequal to that one on the way already. Oh, who am I kidding, I'll probably rent GTA IV just to try it out. But it'll have to be seriously impressive for me to consider buying it.

Great article Monki. To Reel American Hero - renting is a great option for a lot of games, but not this one. The GTA games have so much content that to get through it all you'll be holding on to that rental for days. You'd be better off buying in this case, and if you're a fan of Saints Row then that goes double. I don't like to get sucked in by hype (Halo 3 anyone) but GTA IV looks INCREDIBLE.

as we know it on 4/29 in 3 .. 2 .. 1.. The constant driving from one end of town to the other was wearing me down by the time I played San Andreas. I think condensing Liberty City will be a plus for number 4. I simply can't wait to load this sucker. It ( along with the 360 only games) was the reason why I bought a 360.

Like the city from Futurama or the fifth element.

I know a lot of people were disappointed weh number 4 was revealed as being liberty city again. Some were expecting a big departure.

I think there's still room for both types of game. I know there was a rocket pack in San Andreas but it wasn't as fun as it should've been. I'm talkin teleportation and flying cars here.

Do you HAVE to kill innocents and cops to beat this game?
by Behemoth
Apr 15th, 2008
03:48:00 PM
I gotta admit - I love violent games, and I love sandbox type games, but I have never played the GTA series, mainly because I have no interest in beating the shit out of women, killing cops, and running over pedestrians, even in a game.

What I want to know is, is it possible to play through this in single player mode and NOT intentionally kill innocents or cops? The game looks amazing, the graphics look great, etc., etc., but I personally could not enjoy it if the answer to the subject header is "Yes." I'd love to be able to play it where I wreak horrible vengeance on the scum of the city and avoid harming those who don't deserve to be harmed.

Okay....time to give up the Vectrex.

albeit it must take mad skills to beat a GTA without killing some cops or pedestrians. I don't remember any mission asking to do that (unless this was a crooked cop) but in the heat of the action sometimes you can't avoid it.

Personally I don't give a damn, but I see whre you come from. Anyway, given the virtual nature of GTA and the cathartic enjoyment taken from its nihilistic POV I wouldn't forbid myself to play it if I were you. Your call.

You didn't "have" to kill innocents and cops to win any of the earlier GTA games either, did you? Like SpencerTrilby said, sometimes bullets/bombs/cars get out of control and things happen, but to my knowledge there's never been an intentional need to kill innocents or cops aside from rampage missions that aren't required to complete the story.

by Ckuouka
Apr 15th, 2008
05:27:53 PM
I imagine it would take a great amount of skill to get through the game without killing anyone who is innocent, but I am guessing it can be done, just as you can beat any Metal Gear Solid game without killing a single enemy, including bosses. It's just a lot harder to do. I have this and Metal Gear Solid 4 reserved for my PS3 and I don't think there are any two games I'm more excited about for the rest of the year. Maybe Soul Calibur, but the Star Wars characters killed a little bit of my enthusiasm for that.

i enjoyed it, i thought it was trying to be different from gta yet tipping the hat to their innovations...but goddamn i hated the controls on that game. Far too fidgety & driving the cars felt like maneuvering lead boxes. Enjoyed the recreation of London but what made GTA: London great was setting it in the 60's. Anything in 60's London is better! Don't believe me? Destroy All Humans 2 sets part of it there & for awhile it made that game fun...for awhile

because halo 3 is a mediocre, overhyped piece of shit, just like halo 2 was. seriously, anyone who still plays halo 3 online when there are far superior games available, like COD4 and team fortress 2, is an idiot. sorry, halo 3 fucking sucks. [p]GTA4, on the other hand, looks like a true evolution over the previous games, instead of just a gussied-up version of its predecessors. (did i mention halo 3 was and is an overhyped piece of shit that did absolutely nothing above what halo 2 did, aside from feeling even more stale and lazy?)

You DO know the innocent civilians in the GTA series are just collections of pixels, don't you? I mean, they're not really any more innocent than the "evil" collections of pixels. You aren't committing any immoral acts by killing a drawing of someone.

However, you don't have to kill innocents in any of the GTA games. It's up to you. Sometimes you get a crooked cop or soldier or politician, but if you don't want to kill the NPC civilians, you don't have to.

Yoda is lame
by Ckuouka
Apr 16th, 2008
05:54:04 AM
I thought Yoda jumping around like he was having a seizure in Episode Two and Three was incredibly lame. I am glad I'm getting the PS3 version with Vader. While he's definitely an overused character, if I have to be stuck with a Star Wars character, I'd prefer it not be a little green muppet. As much as I don't want to see Star Wars mixed with my Soul Calibur, I'd definitely prefer having a force choke than just being some spinning green light saber. Both characters take me out of the story, though.
Not starting the PS3 Vs 360 again...But
by SKULL1138
Apr 16th, 2008
07:33:45 AM
A lot of people saying they will buy a PS3 just for this game, well...why not buy a 360 then, bear in mind that this games has been working on 360's since October and rumour has it the delay was to get it working fully on a PS3, also if its just for this game you are buyingit, Id personally rather get the version that will have downloadable content

If you are hyuped about MGS4 then opf course you are going to ave to buy a PS3 although I believe it will come outlater for X box as they will need the extra sales of the game because there is not a huge PS3 market yet, but no guarantees there?

Peronally Gears of War 2 coming in November, Mass effect and Halo 3 (not my fave game by any means) are reasons enough to go with 360, but with GTA4 having extra content, its surely a hands down victory for me...

Unless you are hyped for MGS4 as GT5 is over hyped and wont be any bettre than Forza 2 and 3 will be along shorlty as well, they will just be waiting to see what GT5 does and then beat it slightly. Most of the fancy features mentioned for GT5 have been knicked from Forza 2 anyway...

If I hadthe money I'd buy them both, but any game thats out for both I wiould get for X box, simply because of achievements points a lone, it makes you strve to do tasks in games.

Not bashing, there are choices which is good, just that if you are only getting a console for this game...Why the PS3?

Dont start the PS3 and X box bashing please!

First, Metal Gear Solid 4 isn't coming out for 360. Hell, they are packing it in with the PS3, starting in June. And if you're going to go on about sales, the 360, which has had a year headstart on the PS3, has sold 18 million units, worldwide, last time I checked. The PS3 is at 11 million. If it continues to sell the way it has, and it's beat the 360 in sales EVERYWHERE for the last two months, then by 2009, it'll outsell the 360. I'm not getting into a system war with people. If they like the 360, they can like the 360. I'm not going to go into which system is better, because most of us feel whichever system we own is the better one. But the whole "poor PS3 sales" thing is a thing of the past. Not to mention, Rockstar has confirmed the PS3 will be getting its own downloadable content for GTA IV. Jeronimo Barrera, in the May edition of PlayStation World Magazine, confirmed it. It might be different content than the 360 version (much like how Soul Calibur IV has exclusive characters for each system), but it's still getting DLC. I will say, though, that I'm not into racing games at all, so Grand Turismo 5 means nothing to me. God of War 3, Warhawk, Ratchet & Clank, Uncharted, Disgaea 3, and Metal Gear 4 do. Not to mention I don't like paying for my online service.

I dig where this thread is going.

Oh, and thanks for the heads up about the downloadable content for the PS3 version of Grand Theft Auto Ckuouka. I was hoping they'd create something exclusive for the Sony crowd as well.

There I said it...could it be any more boring? No. That it could not.
