Loving it! Downey is going to be PERFECT as Stark!

But I gotta admit, there has been a TON of clips, footage and pics for this one. More than I've ever seen for a huge summer movie like this. Hoping there's still some surprises yet.

Except for the trailer and a small handful of stills, I know dick about Indy 4 and I plan to keep it that way from here on out.

y and I love it. Downey is almost exactly what I pictured stark when I read the comics.

I have to admit that we are seeing a lot of the movie, but I'm still paying to see this on the big screen.

Just because I see a scene on a small media player all grainy, doesn't mean the movie experience is wrecked for me in the theater.

(which was to not watch sneak peeks and clips anymore) and finally gave it a look... And I gotta agree with kafka07, sadly. I don't know if we share the same reasons to dislike it nor if the final product will wash away my doubts, but damn that was unfunny as hell - and even worse: it gives the Stark character a goofy vibe that just doesn't belong here.

The guy is supposed to be flawless. Driven, self-confident, creative; not some billionaire Red Richards having a hard time with his lab stuff. It just makes the character look down-to-earth and "human", when precisely the alcohol addiction was the human flaw that's supposed to pull him back to the human level. If he's awkward and flawed in episode one, there's just no need to make a Demon In A Bottle-like episode two. Wasted concept.

Iron Man marketing
by Chishu_Ryu
Apr 14th, 2008
11:40:29 AM
I think in this case, a bit of over-saturation of media might be needed as nobody outside of comic book circles really knows who Iron Man is, or cares. So it's probably a good idea to show as much as possible to draw in casual movie-goers. Films cannot live on geek money alone...

They're really marketing this to the MTV/Nickelodeon crowd. It also feels like parts of it were purposely shot to look like something you would find on YouTube. It reminds me of how some movies back in the early 2000's had scenes that tried to look like something out of reality TV.

Did you even read the comics?? He always had trouble intially, when he use to upgrade the suit or when he first put on the suit. To say this one scene makes him look goofy is just wrong. It justs makes him look like a scientist trying things out. In fact it only took him about a minute to "get it." I mean the moment where he just hovers there, is fucking Iron Man.
I do read the comics, Prime
by SpencerTrilby
Apr 14th, 2008
12:20:29 PM
the guy is a driven, idealistic hunk who reeks of self-confidence. He's supposed to be a Bond-like type: men would be like him, while women would be with him. In the comics.

In that clip (and in some early trailers I watched) he looks - to me at least - like an awkward average Joe test-driving his improved hoverboard. Complete with gags that didn't make me laugh once. Only cringe.

But if you liked it, that's fine. I won't challenge your tastes, nor your knowledge of the comics. Did you even read them, BTW??^^ I fail to understand what kind of troubles (other than physical) he had back in the day. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that was precisely why they added Pep, Happy Hogan (the comedic foils, like, in *contrast* with the protagonist) and later the addiction issue.

doesn't automatically make you an expert at flying jet boots. I liked it. Reminds me of Spidey 1 when peter was first testing out his abilities, i like that they show them struggling to master their abilities. They can't just start out using them all perfectly or it'd be boring to watch.

but Spidey is a down-on-his-luck, awkward teenager. Not Stark. Why do they chose to show him stumble in a ridiculous way?

Has the Unicorn got a horn? YES. Does it exist? NO. Would Tony Stark test his stuff? Yes, like any normal scientist. Is he a "normal scientist? NO WAY, he's a rich cool guy who succeeds in every possible way, and not a goofy guy stumbling on his clown shoes.

At least, not to me.

But I see where you come from

the Spidey comparison is logical, but the two characters are so different that I don't see any legitimate reason for Favreau to go into camp territory.

While I respect the differing opinions given here, with their varying degrees of expertise to back what they say up, I have to admit I didn't see much in the clip that led me to think Stark is some kind of goofball. He looks like a guy trying to fly on jet boots for the first time. It was entirely plausible. And yes, I've read the comics. While he is a sophisticated, cool billionaire inventor type, Stark was never portrayed as infallible, especially in the early years of the comic series. Constantly testing and pushing the envelope is what made him a success, not the ability to "Jet Skate" flawlessly the first time he turns on the boosters. I liked the scene and don't think it demeans or ridicules the character. I'm excited to see this in the theater. Bring it on.
Repulsors as flight thrust...
by MisterE
Apr 14th, 2008
01:20:25 PM
I haven't collected "Iron Man" regularly in years (since John Byrne was writing and John Romita, Jr, was drawing the book), so maybe I've missed something. Since when does Iron Man use his hand-mounted repulsors as a means of generating flight thrust? They are meant to be his primary weapons system. What happens if he needs to fight while flying? It's a very small concern on my part, as the film is looking great so far.
donwillymo (RE: IM vs. Hulk)...
by MisterE
Apr 14th, 2008
01:29:22 PM
donwillymo, The Hulk recently beat the crap out of Iron Man, but Shellhead has laid the smackdown on the Jade Giant at least once in the past. I forget the issue number, but Iron Man knocked the Hulk out cold one time, and totally short-circuited and fused his armor in the process. This caused the armor's eye and mouth holes to seal, and Stark was going to suffocate. Luckily, Stark International had Scott Lang, AKA Ant Man, on the payroll, and he was able to breach the Iron Man armor and open it from the inside.

Apr 14th, 2008
02:20:20 PM
was that in the early years of Iron Man he always pushed the envelope and had a few problems intially when trying something new. It would be insane to show him invent the suit, then have him automatically know how to use it perfectly. Having him stumble a bit is fine and it wasnt goofy looking IMO. And like I said before, the end where he is just hovering there is pure Iron Man.

Fuck off. It is awesome. Ok, the fire extinguisher bit is a little campy, but the flying is awesome and so it Stark's reaction. The physics on it look amazingly real and he's not acting like a goofball at all, he's acting like anyone would - even the coolest, most confident motherfucker in the world - when flying for the first time. If anything, it is TONED WAY DOWN. I mean, if any of us got the chance to do something like that I think it would sound something like this: "HHOOOLLLYY SHITT!!! I'M FUCKING FLYING!!! OH MY GOD!!! HOLY SHIT, HOLY SHIT, HOLY SHIT!!! AAHHHH!!! HOW THE FUCK DO I CONTROL THESE THINGS?!?! OH MY GOD THIS IS FUCKING AWESOME!!!" And then we would slam into something and get knocked the fuck out.

NOTHING. To those who say it doesn't fit the character, or that the scene is "badly directed" - seriously: can it. Quit trolling for the sake of trolling. If Stark had been able to fly perfectly, without running tests, it would have been silly. As far as talking to his automated safety system/robots; well, they are somewhat intelligent (albeit overprotective), and they obviously understand what he is saying. Why shouldn't Stark speak to them as if they are intelligent? I don't see any sort of camp here. He sounds pretty damn serious when he says "Just stand down", almost like he's speaking to a stubborn child. Oh, and Tony Stark does have a sense of humor, end of story. If you disagree, you don't know the character. Goddamn fanboys. I hate you all. You find joy in nothing, except perhaps in BITCHING about anything and everything. Thank God fanboys don't make movies.

Did you miss the fact that amidst the humor we were being treated to real coolness? The little throwaway about operating at "1 percent", the fact that, though he's SLIGHTLY out of control, and there's some humor in this, the sequence ends with a perfecti, iconic, Iron Man controlled landing. It's a very cool Becoming Iron Man moment. And you jackasses who can't enjoy a superhero film unless it's a dark and grim and moody, with the character all BAD ASS scowling all the time, just missed it. The hell with you Psychotically Angry Superhero fanboys.

... what kind of miserable human beings are you that you can't enjoy a superhero film unless the superhero is CONSTANTLY being badass, super-competent, and a joyless fucktard? Probably because that's what you are yourselves. I spit on you.

Superman The Movie remains my favorite superhero movie of all time, and one of the great highlights is Reeve's goofy Clark Kent. And I think it really made the character much more likeable. I think Fav will probably do the same with Stark - give him a humorous side as well as a serious, save-the-world hero side too.

From the looks of it, Downey is good for Stark in that he'll be able to put across that this guy simply wants to do the right thing, and he has the money and resources to do it--and has a little fun in the process. But fans know (and the comics bear out) that like most people, Stark has personal problems. But I don't think this movie will address those just yet.

To me, the point has nothing to do with whether or not testing a flying suit is believeable or not. The point is, every clip I've seen is pure camp, and it looks like Tony is ruined already. The Parker comparisons are right on the money, I thought exactly the same thing. It smells far too much like trying to bring that same demographic in, and as a result, a movie I've been waiting 25 (im 34 and got into Iron Man around the age of 9) years to be made is going to completely falsify an iconic character in the eyes of the general public. There are STILL people out there who think the Joker killed Bruce Waynes parents. Of course I will see it, I see every comic movie eventually. I did not however pay theater, rental, or DVD prices for either FF movie or the Punisher, and poor Tony is starting to look like a download. :D

He grimly holds sacred the Holy Writ of comic book SERIOUSNESS. Refused to pay for FF or Punisher? What an uptight ass. He missed quite a bit of loyal Marvelly fun with the FF movies. "Worst Comic Book Movie Ever" Go soak your head in ink.
And I bet Brishadow loved the DAREDEVIL movie.

Because it was all serious and shit. And BATMAN BEGINS was the best comic book movie EVER! Because it was all serious and shit. And he hates the movie portrayal of Wolverine because Wolverine isn't ugly and BADASS and grimacing all the time, and his favorite spidey villain is Venom.

Dude, you're absolutely right. I hope these assholes who can't deal with this movie don't go to it. I just know I'm going to have one of their whiney asses behind me in the theater and I'm going to be thrown out yet again for slugging another annoying fucking fanboy. Goddamn these pathetic basement dwellers piss me off! You fuckers better hope you're not in the same theater I'm in, or you're going to taste your nut sacks.

Watch Law & Order every episode for that. His suit means nothing? I bet you not 1% of the audience that went to see spider-man or batman begins went to see seabiscuit or rescue dawn. If they went there for the actors those movies would have made more money. If someone wanted to watch clark kent they'd turn on smallville.(However bastardized) People go to batman for the same reason they're going to iron man. You think anyone would've given a fuck about heath ledger had he died making brokeback mountain or the knight?
Instruction, Fantastic Four WAS good.

Just not "serious". Note how the biggest complaint about that movie is that they "ruined" Dr.Doom? In other words, "ruined" a BADASS character. The BADASS superhero fanboy only cares about badassery. Any other quality is unimportant to the insecure, wishes-he-were-a-badass-too idiot. Is there humor in the film? Is it kid-friendly? This distracts from the wannabe-badass's vicarious participation in the coolness of being a badass. YES, Fantastic Four, and Fantastic Four II were good superhero films. If you've ever bothered to read the early episodes of the comic book, you know that they are incredibly faithful to the mood, humor, FUN of those books. A Badass Fanboy wouldn't pronounce a FF movie "good" unless Sue Storm got raped by Doom, and the rest of the team stood in the rain looking grim and badass while heavy metal music played, before gorily tearing Doom apart. Get fucked
Instruction, of course the suit means something.

Are you a badass muthafucker like 2for2true? He stabs "shitheels" in the mouth with his #2 pencil in the theater when they start yapping. Do you yell something before hitting someone in the nutsack? I think you should have a war cry or something. Maybe paint your face too.

Yes, you are correct that they followed in tone with the early issues of FF and they were kid friendly. But that doesn't make them good films on the whole. The casting of and how they portrayed Doom was pathetic. Sorry, but he is supposed to be a badass powerful, evil villain. He was not in the movies. The dialog did not need to be so atrocious to make it kid friendly, and of course Jessica Alba as Sue Storm was bad. Pleasing on the eyes, oh yes.

But Iron Man will kick all sorts of ass, that we can agree on.

Daredevil goes, it was a lot better than either FF movie and the Punisher. Batman Begins was 10 times better than either FF movie or the Punisher. For the record, I think Hugh did a great Wolverine, cept X Men 3 fell apart completely.
