Hopefully these reviewers will still like the film when they see the second half. Everything I've seen so far suggests Iron Man is going to be great and it's by far my most anticipated film this summer because of that.

I stopped watching IM trailers past the third TV spot, because I felt like I only needed one or two more to fill the blanks and save me ten bucks. One of this reviews (the only one that deserves to be called a "review" actually - printing folks' opinion about half a movie is just useless) sounds like I was right to avoid the spots overkill like the plague.

Sorry to piss on anyones cornflakes, but Heath Ledger cannot be nominated for the gold genitalia lacking fool, as the Academy cruelly sites death as a stipulation against nomination. Unless you do a Peter Finch and die after nomination, (Or unless they change these rather stupid rules,) it ain't gonna happen, even if the late star is as good as Michael Caine says he is.

So was that also the case for James Dean's posthumous nominations for his roles in East of Eden and Giant? I think what you said may be incorrect, but I could be wrong. If a part in a film is complete and the thespian, deceased or not, has exhibited a great degree of acting prowess in their role, I believe they deserve a nomination.

I'm not claiming I single-handedly represent the geekdom on that, but the reason the geeks gave a great feedback is precisely because Favreau and company started their promotional stuff with trailers aimed at this "demographic".

They shifted gears to a more traditional audience recently, with their balls to the walls, showing-it-all trailers. And judging by the AICN talkback, the geeks are beginning to get bored by this (or at the least not as vocal as they were last year) so - perhaps - the silent majority of casual moviegoers got the message - if not a little late - and are more interested than you think. Maybe.

Toshi's reaction to this serves to raise a question I've been wondering about for years. The Japanese love mechs. And they've already adapted SPIDER-MAN, X-MEN as manga, and the former as a(n admitedly bad) late 70s tv live action series. So why have they never done IRON MAN? Seems a natural fit to me.

The StarWolf - about the Iron Man Manga
by SpencerTrilby
Apr 14th, 2008
06:27:25 AM
I read a few pages of a manga a few years ago (don't remember if it was part of the Marvel Mangaverse or a fanwork, but the art was good enough to be professional) about the "Iron Maiden", I think it was Tony's daughter, Antoinette Stark (I shit you not). And it rocked, at least in its own twisted way. You couldn't find more iconoclastic or less canon than this, but as a completely separated entity it worked, as far as I read.

by grampageezer

07:00:32 AM
Is it me, or does it seem that whenever a reviewer hates a movie, the spelling and grammar in their review seems to be perfect? But the reviews PRAISING a film always seem to be written by idiots who can't spell? Could it be these "Man, this was the greatest movie in the history of movies!" reviews are actually plants, and if so, do studios believe geeks are nothing more than ignorant illiterates? In other words - some studio PR man is telling one of his people to write a bogus review extolling the movie, but "don't make the letter sound TOO intelligent and cohesive or no one will believe it's from a real geek."

we'll see next month how the movie performs. I have no doubt the movie will be strong on first week, but it'll have the legs it needs to face the May competition only if the movie is good. If it's not as good as some claim, and especially if there are plot and pacing issues as the few well-written reviews point out, then the movie will have a problem. Because, boring movies don't sit well with summer audience. Ask The Island^^

DVD - Why not add an "alternate soundtrack" if it could use it?
by JDanielP
Apr 14th, 2008
09:07:18 AM
I'm of the opinion that the musical score can add...or even take away...so much, as intended within the story. It does effect how it feels,...every scene, every emotion, low or high. And though I've been consistently and positively surprised by these "IRON MAN" updates, the music soundtrack could use some serious help (so it seems). Is it too late for a grade "A" score, in time for release? And if so, why not give us such an alternate option on the dvd release...and greatly improve the score, with the original score as the alternate pick? ...A great/professional musical score always adds to the enthusiasm for the final product.

why dead actors cannot be nominated
by ArcadianDS
Apr 14th, 2008
09:53:22 AM
the academy wisely exclused the work of deceased actors because they realize that if they were nominated, they would win whether the actual work was good or bad - it would be a sentimental vote that academy members would be guilted into making. I think Heath was great, and Im sure this is the role of his lifetime - but he cannot and should not be nominated for it. Is it fair to him? Perhaps not - but it would be just as unfair to all the other potential nominees if he were included.

What the hell, I am displeased to hear that Fury and Black Widow wer cut. Perhaps they are saving it all for The Incredible Hulk. And maybe even thats why Ed Norton is all up in arms about final cut. Perhaps he doesn't want "HIS" film to be tarnished with a geek-tag ending. (Although a Hulkbuster Damage Control team with other Marvel Characters would be a SWEET sequence)

You may be one of those who sees no relevance to these kinds of movies outside the geek community. But those of us who have read comics forever see them as much more than "biff!" "Bam!" "Pow!"

We rooted for Peter Parker, decades worth of him trying to catch more than one consecutive break in life.

We mourned the loss of consequence-free heroics when the death of Thunderbird (in only his second outing as an X-men) ushered in the current age of heroics.

Some of us literally wept when Jean Grey sacrificed herself in her last lucid moment of X-Men #137 (before the revolving door of death and rebirth had entered into full swing.)

These stores are like soap operas...for guys. With punching. We may pick up an issue for the art or for the action, but it is the character development that keeps up coming back year after year...or dropping a book completely.

As such, we have LONGED for movies to take the genre as seriously as any other science fiction or fantasy genre. LESS CHEESE. MORE MEAT. And the box-office has responded in kind. Why are people surprised that the most serious-minded superhero movies have generally had the most enthusiastic response?

With its emphasis on the bottom line, you would think Hollywood would have caught on sooner. But hopefully, Iron Man will continue the trend - an entertaining and thought-provoking movie about a flawed hero ...who happens to be a superhero...and with killer special effects.

We don't want "superhero" movies trying to be great. We want great movies about people trying to be heroes.

Call me a geek if you want.

Batman Begins water evaporator plot hole debunked!

Gawddammit, it was a focused (KEY WORD- FOCUSED) microwave emitter so Ra's Al Ghul and Co. used it only on the water mains. They didn't want to dehydrate everybody to death (including themselves). There are easier ways to kill a man (so I'm told).

That was my best and only attempt to rationalize the Batman Begins water evaporator plot hole controversy. Perhaps it is 3 years too late but the truth is always on time, haters!

But the problem is that Rickey's already seen this movie. Here's how it goes: Iron Man's visual FX look cool, but after seeing the preview, I think I've already seen the movie. Here it is:

1) Guy is a regular dude.

2) Guy gets powers.

3) Guy has wacky destructive escapades discovering said powers.

4) Guy defeats evil bad guy, gets girl.

5) Door remains open for sequel. The end.

Yeah the problem with evolving a superhero charcter with sooooo much story already made is that comic book movies cost a pretty penny to make. And you aren't going to get your returns without the WOW factor of a comic book movie.

People saying that this movie will tank because of Indy/DK/Hulk/Sex In the City, its the first summer movie of the summer. Its already a hit. They knew what they were doing, its not going to get lost in the shuffle like Hulk will (when it opens to midocore reviews) or Wanted. Its not going to be the biggest hit of the year, but there will be a sequel.

2.) Guy realizes he has the capacity to do good.

3.) Guy has destructive escapades discovering what he can and cannot do.

4.) Guy defeats bad guys/inner demons/big bad, gets girl.

5.) Door remains open for sequel.

Nope, you covered it well, that and about 80% of the movies out there. Now it's just a matter of decided what will be the power for change: Secret knowledge? Kung-fu? An ability to take more punches? "Crazy Eyes?" (sorry, just rewatched The New Guy. Technically, that falls under Secret Knowledge, I know...) Magic hummus?

To me, it just looks... bland. There's no visual flair to it. Watching the trailers, it's like watching ads for an over-produced, but otherwise run-of-the-mill irreverent comedy with a little action and comic book iconography thrown in to distinguish it from everything else. If that's what it is and is what the Iron Man fans want, I'm certainly not going to rain on their parade, but while I like the whole Iron Man concept and will probably see this movie, I'm much more excited about "The Dark Knight" - even "The Incredible Hulk" holds a little more interest for me, though I don't really know why. Maybe I'm just afraid that instead of being a superhero / Iron Man movie, it's just going to be another film in which Downey can play the same old smarmy, heathenistic character he always plays, except this time he's got a big company and an Iron Man suit. Oh, well... It's just an opinion, and not an educated one at that since I've only seen trailers. Anyhow, I guess if I'm really going to be that critical, nobody's forcing me to see it, now, are they... lol

Alternate Title Spam - is when people clog up the TB's with 'witty' alternate title's. Say: 'Indiana Jones, and the temple of poo' Or, 'Star Trek 10 - the search for Kirks teeth'. And one begets 10, which begets 100. I must admit, it is funny to create alternate titles sometimes, but if you are in the midst of a really good TB, then having a flood of the AT's is nothing but spam.

unless im misreading some seem to think the plan in BB was to make people die of thirst or something water related. his plan was simply to use the emitter to evaporate all the water in town (which was laced with the toxin) so that EVERYONE would go crazy and basically burn the city to the ground. might be an over the top typical comic book plan but it was explained pretty well.

The microwaves are not "selective". The emitter was (theoretically) aimed at the water mains. Whether or not the people who may have been standing underneath the train/above the mains were burned is...well...something we'll never know...

There is real life, then there are super hero movies. Real life, no villain would tell a hero, what his plan was unless, he made damn sure that two bullet, that he fired himself, was put into said hero's brain. Even then, it would be stupid to tell, maybe the guy was wired, or had a tape recorder or wh knows what. Never tell! So, if you are looking for real life - forget it. However, that does not mean it must be moronic like, destroying a continent and replacing it with a kryptonite laced ugly rock (yep I'm flogging SR) and having the hero who is allergic and has sneezing fits to kryptonite be somehow able to lift an entire continent out of the water - a continent that is laced with the stuff that give the hero such a sneezing fit, now THAT you can question! The microwave - stupid as it was, was genius compared to that!

Comic book reference 4. Random film connection to metropolis, robocop, terminator or any other man & machine story. 5.Blurb about cumming in his pants when ironman says "I AM IRON MAN". 6. Intimate story about how he met Jon. Favs and wanted to have his children. Finally 7. Close it up with a recommendation, and plead for Hulk to be as good, Nay. I basically agree with you, I liked SR up until the 2nd half. They showed how much effort it took for him to catch a plane brilliantly, yet lifting a country-sized island of kryptonite seemed to take little more effort. Big spectacle or large evil plots do not necessarily require stupid planning or execution to be effective cinematicaly though. Trying to fire microwave radiation through steel railway structures and pipes simply would not work, as anyone who has left a teaspoon in a microwave oven can tell you.

Shiny Robots plus Loud Explosions plus Classic Ozzy = $$$s at the multiplex. ...this isn't the first time actors have played different roles in the Marvel films. Donal Logue played "Quinn" in Blade and then showed up as Nic Cage's buddy in Ghost Rider. Rebecca Romijn-Stamos is "Mystique" in the X-Men trilogy, but is also "Joan" in The Punisher. Matt Schulze played some random lackey in Blade and then got a larger supporting role as "Chupa" in Blade II. Ben Foster played "Dave" in The Punisher and then "Angel" in X-Men 3. And then there's the whole Bruce Campbell thing with the X-Men films. So Jon Favreau being "Foggy Nelson" in Daredevil and now "Happy Hogan" in Iron Man really doesn't screw up much of anything. Besides, with Marvel now running their own film franchises, Iron Man is really ground-zero for the new continuity. From here on out is when they'll be watching for that stuff, since they finally control most of the properties themselves instead of some studio like before.
