Rec was ok but once you've seen 28 Days, Rec is like the super low budget version in one building. What makes it work is the reporter is so natural as a small town news person that you buy into the whole story.

Was awesome. Can't wait to see it again. I'm in the camp that thought Poughkeepsie Tapes was godawful, but I won't hold a grudge. I hope the filmmakers do a good job with the remake, but I do have to echo what Fury above in that it looks like it's an almost scene for scene, moment for moment translation... at least based on the trailer. Whatever. If it works, it works, I guess...

dying to see REC. Anyone got a screener? The Quarantine trailer looked pretty cool but if it's a shot for shot remake, it's all about which one I see first. I think that's why I preferred the original Funny Games. Been looking forward to seeing what all the fuss is about over Poughkeepsie Tapes but I guess they keep delaying that one too...

The cinematography looks way too polished and clean for the 'authentic' documentary look that worked so well in the original, and yea, not only do they tell you how it ends in the beginning of the trailer with narration, they show you the last scene of the film at the end in case you weren't sure. What a load of crap.

Just bittorrent it. Theres a thousands of copies floating out there but sans english subtitles. But if your espanol es basura, it doesnt really matter after the 20 minute mark when all hell breaks loose.

about it is such a bullshit cop out argument. I saw Juno (just to use a random example) 4 months ago and I'm still arguing, as recently as yesterday, that it's a terrible film. This isn't because that film affected me in any way it was meant to. It's because it's a bad film masquerading as something it isn't. To say that just because it elicited a reaction that it somehow succeeds as art would be giving way to much credit to hacks like Brett Ratner and Michael Bay. I've never seen the Poughkipsie Tapes, but the association between the film and the fact that certain people hate it vehemently is absolutely no barometer of it's quality.
I finally got around to seeing REC.

I'm hoping it will eventually get a stateside release but I managed to score a copy with English subs about a month ago. It's very intense and those last five minutes actually managed to scare the hell out of me (and had me jumping like a little bitch over every noise I heard throughout the house that night). I'm hoping that the remake can maintain the same level of tension even though it appears to be an exact shot-for-shot recreation of the original, at least judging from the trailer.
But where did it come from?

In RETURN OF ... it was a military experiment gone awry. In NIGHT OF, it was either a returning radioactive satellite or some supernatural influence. In [REC] there's ONE old lady in an apartment block? How did she catch the bug? Satanic rites in her bathroom? Doesn't seem to make much sense.

doesn't mean that the film is successful or good.

For good or ill, a lot of readers use your reviews as guidelines for what to shell out to see. When you come out in praise of something that they perceive to be crap- even though they should be blaming themselves, they blame you. Hence emails of complaint.

Mind you, I'm not going to see it anyway, because I hate torture porn.

It is sad that they are remaking a spanish film before it gets its US release though. They should be ashamed.

REC is an awesome, shit splattering in your boxers type horror movie. I fucking loved it. And once again, its having an American remake. Do people not learn anything? Anyone remember the soiled patch of week old masturbation juice that was The Grudge? Fucking leave the films alone! It'll get ripped up, chewed and spat out again. Is this being remade purely because there's a bunch of dumbfuck yanks that won't go and see a Spanish film or what? Fuck em!

The 3rd review. This guy lost me at "hellish cacophony". No, truth be told he lost me at "non-diegetic". No, really. Plus my head now hurts. "This coupled with a soundtrack that does away almost entirely with non-diegetic sound, and instead incorporates natural sound to create a hellish cacophony;"

Have you actually seen the film? The bitch in the attic came into contact with the dog pre film, the dog bit the old bitch pre film or ingested its saliva, the old bitch bit another bitch and the cop. Then shit got fucked up. It didn't seem to make much sense to you because you didn't understand it in the first place. Have another look.

Coincidentally, I just watched this movie last night. Had no expectations and it blew me away. The film wisely avoids all the shitty soap opera that hampered "Cloverfield" and plays it real, fast, and dirty. I advise seeing the original over the remake if only because the actress in the US version (the questionably talented sister on TV's "Dexter") is nowhere near as talented as REC's Manuela "Sex tape leak, please" Velasco.

It has the best final 10-15 minutes of pure horror i've seen in many years! VERY, VERY, Creepy!!! but it's a pretty mixed ride from the start with lots of plot holes and some varying/random infection times between zombies(not really zombies, more 28 days later freaks) BUT I enjoyed it more and had far less problem with it than Diary of the Dead! although once again the main characters kept drawing attention to the camera and kaept saying how they must film no matter what happened when like Diary they should have stopped drawing attention to the central device(the camera) and just fucking filmed!!! Anyway, like I said before the last bit of the film in night vision was Amazing and will have some folks of a weaker disposition pissing in their pants!
Huge, huge spoilers in that trailer by the way! I advise to say

But wasn't that explained in the film? I mean if someone gets saliva from say, the dog, while others are bitten or in some cases practically ripped apart the infection is going to take effect far quicker right?

I can't believe they gave away that shot in the goddamned trailer. What are these Poughskeepie guys gonna do, TOP THAT ENDING? REC gave me friggin' nightmares and is truly the best horror I've seen in a long time... I can't believe they need to remake such a fresh and well executed film. Plus, the beauty of the original reporter is irreplaceable... Emily Rose won't do.

The ONLY reason that superior foreign films get "remade" as American movies is because Mainstream Murkans are lazy and stupid and don't appreciate true art, don't want to read subtitles and prefer their stories by the numbers with a heaping helping of hand holding. Harsh? Yeah. In spades. But only because I care. A shot for shot remake? Really? Just so we can hear the hollerin' in Ainglish? Too bad, so sad.

Virus Origin [SPOILER]
by epevensie
Apr 14th, 2008

Darn it! Hit the return key. SPOILER * * * I understood the first victim of the virus to be a girl who was believed to be possessed. A priest (or someone connected to the church) had secretly taken over the penthouse apartment and attic as a place where an exorcism could be attempted. Seemingly, the infected (not really possessed) girl managed to kill (and consume) her would-be benefactor and then continued her undead experience locked in the attack - hence her skeletal appearance. I assume the dog was infected via fleas in the building or some similar method of transmission. I enjoyed the film, but thought it somewhat lacking in ferocity. The performances were great - especially the lead actress - and they handled the cinéma-vérité aspect well. By the last moments, however, I found it difficult to believe that anyone would still be focusing the camera on the action (i.e., filming a frantic search for a key to a locked door while high-speed zombies are closing in from behind). The night vision at the end, however, was appropriate and useful, so it worked perfectly.

It transcends its budget by using the space in which it is filmed to its full advantage and by not requiring a whole lot of CG special effects to achieve its effect. The actual structure of the story etc is pretty tried and tested. That is how.

What was with the lame "here's an audio tape explaining the whole thing" scene at the end? All ready to go at the press of a button too. The collage of clippings on the walls was really enough, we aint stoopid. Kind of pulled the film down a notch imho. Good otherwise though.
