...with never a disparaging word when it comes to SNL or anyone connected to it...to the point that Herc declares Dana Fox to be a "talented up-and-comer." Yeah, the talented up-and-comer whose only other notable credit was the screenplay to a romantic comedy that was exceptionally forgettable even by today's romantic comedy standards.

Saturday Night Live is one of the few shows that many people agree is not actually good. It is not funny anymore. Even the SNL Digital Shorts are hit and miss. There's not one GREAT cast member with the show right now...no one of Will Ferrell/Chevy Chase/Chris Rock/Dan Ackroyd status. It's true. The show sucks. It's really almost a fact and not an opinion :)

I'm sorry that I may not have grasped the character because it was insanely boring that I lost interest, but he is parodying TV hosts who reads newspaper articles on the air (as some one pointed out Regis Philben for one) not just reading articles on the air. Now who is missing the point?

I can understant why you think it is funny though. Following weak assed jokes by Seth Meyers and Amy Pohler and an annoying character by Wiig, anything would look funny.

I have decided that SNL hasa become punishment for people without more of social life. There must be a bar and club owners association that pays Lorne Michaels millions to make SNL so lame that it will keep people in bars until last call.

I remember the days when people wouldn't mind calling it an evening early to come home and watch SNL at least every once and a while. Now not so much.

This was the first SNL I watched from start to finish in a long time and it will be the last one for a longer time. It is a shame to think back to this show for the 70s through the 90s (except for a handful of years) and see how low this show has fallen.

People say that, but no one was complaining during the Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, Phil Hartman era. I judge SNL season's popularity based on how many of their characters actually get into the national lexicon.

Back in the 70s, people were quoting "two wild and crazy guys", Rosanna Anna Danna, "I'm Chevy Chase and your not." "Jane you ignorant slut" etc.

In the 80s, people were doing their Buckwheat impressions, "I'm Gumby Damn It", "I hate when that happens", "Most excellent, I must say", etc.

In the 90s, it was "Not gunna do it", Wayne's World's impressions, "Rich. Richonrino. The Richinator", etc.

Other than Dick in a Box and Lazy Sundays, what has really been water cooler talk the last few years. I can't think of anything.

Lorne Michaels is in his sixties. Quite a few of the main writers and the cast are in their mid to late 30s. Seth Meyers is the head writer and he is 35. Amy Pohler is 37. Darrell Hammond (although not on much anymore) is 53. Fred Armisen is 42. Kristen Wiig is 34. Bill Hader is 2 months away from 30. Adam Samberg is 3 months away from 30. Will Forte is 37.

So, maybe the problem is that people who have been watching SNL for decades are writing for people in college. If you have been watching SNL for decades, you are peers to most of the cast and writers.

besides the fact that it has pretty much sucked this season, is if Kenan appears prominently in 1 or more sketches. Doesn't Lorne know the key to SNL funny? You need A - one funny black guy and B - one funny fat white guy. You can't combine the two!! Especially with someone of Kenan's stature! (Sidenote - Can anyone think of a funny fat black comedian besides the late Robin Harris? And no, Steve Harvey, Cedric the Entertainer, and the dude from House of Payne are not considered funny. My point being that they are very rare and SNL struck out on this cast member) Kenan needs to take his ass back to Nickelodeon where the audience appreciates his brand of humor. Bring some fresh blood into the show and drop the dead weight.

digital 8, what's your point. i never said SNL was good. it's sucked the last month, although i have to say, i thought tonight's episode was pretty solid, especially gnarls barkley. i always thought ashton had good comedy chops and he did a nice job tonight. i skipped the opening sketch as i've been prone to do lately. i hate it when SNL does politics. it's just not even remotely funny anymore. and i skipped update as well. myers needs to go. he's a one-trick pony. get some fresh blood in there who's willing to look a little crazy. i miss norm. as for you morbid, perhaps it was a weird reference but no, i didn't see the wedding date, i read the what happens in vegas script and think it will make a pretty entertaining if formulaic movie. it's generic studio crap all the way but it's well done and has two likable stars and the trailer's sold me. looks like a great date movie. and dana fox just signed a deal with i think scott stuber for another project. so yeah, she's an up and comer in my book.

by Napoleon Park
Apr 13th, 2008
10:50:39 AM
Before the singers from the Rip Chords joined the Mothers and became Flo and Eddy they recorded the song "Let Me Be" which contained the line "I am what I am and that'a all I ever will be" which of course was a paraphrase of the famous line from Howard "Popeye" Boyle in Paddy Chayefsky's "Toonerville Trolley Connection," who said "I yam what I yam and what I yam is mads as hells and I ain'ks gonna takes it no mores."

In other words, Asstown Kootcher isn't the producer of Punkt, MissGuided or that other thing he said, he's not the guy from "Dooed, My Car's Gone in 60 Seconds", he's not that boytoy who married the Brat Pack. Kootcher is Kelso "and that's all he ever will be".

Nicholas Fehn: more than one joke.
by Napoleon Park
Apr 13th, 2008
02:17:39 PM
Fred Armisen's Nicholas Fehn character is certainly not a "one joke" character. Although his past appearances have been formulaic (same bit every time) there is more than one joke in play.

1.) he parodies the observational comic. As I mentioned this dates back to Mort Sahl, Berman, Lenny riffing off his own obsceniity trial transcripts. And maybe that stuff wasn;t always funny, but it connected with a hip audience by having someone on stage express their points of view which were rarely heard in the media.

Today various chat show hosts spin variations on the themes. Letterman does his "Small Town News". Conan has "True items" which are obviously not genuine. and Leno reverses the gag with a bit so far from the original premise that it should be called "headlines, article excepts, ads and wedding announcements," and he seems to miss that the clippings are funny and his "joke" commets are lame.

So the first joke is that Fehn's beliefs and views are so filmly held that he seems to belive that "No way!" or "As if!" is a valid commentary.

2.) His second bit is the run-on sentence fragments. For an excellent example of this listen to the Shatner track "Still In Love" from the Ben Folds "Fear of Pop" album. Much like speed-freak Lenny, his thoughts are runing so fast that his mouth can't keep up with them.

3.) Gotilk did a good Fehn impression above, but left out the 3rd key element: the non-sequitor segues. Sometimes Fehn's stream of consciousness takes such leaps of logic that you have no idea where he's going or what he's goping to say next.

I mean, consider if you will...mom, dad, baby sister...the government view...looking back...aqueduct theory...seen from that way...what I'm getting at...Now THE DINOSAURS!...

4.)Admittedly, the usual Fehn chunk consists of some combination of those three elements. This last one did add a fourth joke: Poehler's question "Is this actually going any where?" That was so multi-leveled. Was she addressing Fehn or Armisen? Speaking on behalf of herself, Lorne, Update, SNL or the audience members? Was her comment aimed at his specif tirade or the character's very existance? It was not a usual part of the bit, but it was a very strong punchline just the same.

It's kinda twisted (no pun intended), but he does sacrifice his life in the womb for the sake of his friends and family.

Men Behind The Son is a tad sicker than that, IMO. Not to mention it really happened.

Since you could take MBtS, perhaps I can persuade you to watch the excellent 'An American Crime' that is premering on Showtime May 10. It's the real story of the Sylvia Likens torture and murder, but unlike the exploitation film 'The Girl Next Door', it tells the facts as best they are known.Much of it is based on the actual court transcripts. Ellen Page stars as Sylvia. I saw a screener of it and it's absolutely horrifying. And it's no where near as gruesome as men Behind the Sun.

How this film isn't getting a theatrical release is beyond me, especially with Ms. Page's star rising. I think it's on DVD in the UK already.

Damned good observation. I missed that part, well really forgot about it. This is why I love Armisen. I think the reason why some people get so frustrated with SNL right now is that they have so much raw talent on the show right now and it feels so untapped most of the time. I loved Hader's Vincent Price bit, but I'm sure it zoomed over a few heads. That was never a good reason before for SNL to dump a bit. They need to let these guys loose a bit.

When I realized I don't have the slightest idea who any of these lame-ass musical guests are. Oh well. I'm old. The dream is over. Think I'll just watch my kick-ass Season 1-3 DVD sets repeatedly.

only good parts of the show. And update. Rest was REALLY bad. Even the '4 guys listen to jukebox' sketch sucked (Forte delivered only laugh), and that one's usually gold.
I knew NBC was going through a downslide this week...

I barely laughed at 30Rock and The Office this week and whenever SNL had one of their lame commercials for the upcoming episode, the king of mediocrity Ashton Kutcher is standing there. Somebody explaing the appeal of this guy?

They should have had Demi for that bit.

The only parts worth watching are bits at the beginning, digital short, the news, maybe the musical act if I care about them. Then it's fast forward until I see good production values with guest stars like the Couger bit which was amoung the first. I can watch this in less than 20 min usually.

How'd they write this week's script?
