I think so, because Gallo dropped out a few weeks back.

But his Masters of Horror episodes were much better. What's with him making his daughter do nude scenes in his films? Is this an Italian thing, or are they as creeped out as I am by it?

sounds great. I love to see him have a big hit with some of his uniquely weird film-making. But an off form Argento, and yes I'm looking at you Phantom Of The Opera, I really hope not. I've got my fingers crossed which makes it hard to type.

Has Mother of Tears had a US release?

Good to know that Brody don't wanna take the easy way.

...and we consider ourselves to be BIG Argento fans. Since the late 80s, he's only made one decent movie, and that was Non Ho Sonno (Sleepless). We still haven't plucked up the courage to watch The Mother Of Tears...
Argento is a supreme visualist

It is well known that Argento makes his stories a distant second to his directorial virtuosity. His relationship with actors over the years has been somewhat abrasive at times. That said he is a genius and is an artist of the highest order. Opera, Suspiria, Deep Red, (Profondo Rosso if you like)along with most of his work are just plain superb. Even average Argento is better than most of today's horror rubbish.I can't believe more actors of Brody's calibre have not worked with Dario over the years. Argento is a challenge that is for sure.

A spoof???

You know, my first reaction was that, whenever a filmmaker titles their film as a statement of fact about what it is, I assume it's going to be a shitty spoof. Scary Movie. Date Movie. Epic Movie. Superhero Movie. Not Another Teen Movie... Not Another Teen Movie was kinda funny actually. But, luckily, the multiple meanings of the word "giallo" allow a completely different and serious plot within the genre. Go Dario. ................ but if I'm wrong and Carmen Electra turns up in this, god help me, your Italian ass is grass.

I had high expectations after the early hype, I'm a big fan of Argento's 70-80s output, but unfortunately MOT paled in comparison to Susperia, Inferno and Tenebrae. Some of the dialogue and acting was pretty ropey, and the music was desktop quality (where are Goblin when you need 'em?!) Argento's trademark visual style and flourishes were lacking. Argento really needs to hook up with a decent Cinematographer and shoot in anamorphic again. With Brody onboard tho, Argento's game should hopefully be raised above his last efforts, sounds like a good set-up scriptwise, looking forward to it.

PJ should have directed the 1996 draft and cast Ron Livingston and Kate Winslet, like he should have. We would have been spared that disgracefully bloated pile that he dumped on us. Yes, the white woman craves black cock... We get that, Pete.

...Genre as Suspiria and Inferno. I wouldn't even go as far as to call it a Giallo. It wasn't bad, considering just how CRAP it could have been.... but it doesn't sit well with Suspiria. Anyone else seen it? And all the gore in the final scenes seemed.... a little desperate.
Series7, this is why the Pianist is good

It stays out of the concentration camps, and thereby avoids the 're-creating the horror' tropes that so many Holocaust movies treat as the point of their existence: "This happened, and it was bad." The Pianist is a movie about the instinct for survival, and the mystery of a world in which transcendent beauty and inhuman cruelty can coexist. Furthermore, it suggests that the instinct for survival is *linked* to the human experience of beauty and cruelty. And it makes these points with visuals and action alone, not by beating you over the head with obvious dialogue.

Throw in an amazing performance by Adrien Brody and the fact that it's directed by a total cinematic genius, and you've got yourself much more than a movie about "some douchbag [sic] jew".

Im a huge Argento fan but I admit that Mother of Tears was shitty. Of his recent movies I thought the Card Player was decent and I really like Sleepless. Hopefully this is back to a return to full form for him. Yeah his Masters of Horror episodes are actually some of the better ones. http://tinyurl.com/pv8do

Although it took an Italian TV-movie to prove it. Being a fan has been frustrating, but it's perfectly understandable to sign up for another decade of hope that the guy can make a great film. Even at his worst, he makes interesting ones.

by the restless spirit of Lucio Fulci! Since his MoH eps his stuff has been rammed with the kind of zesty, splashy, splatter unseen really since Fulci's prime. Pelts particularly was Argento channelling Fulci, and I was very suprised by how flat-out trashy Terza Madre was. And that kind of sums up that particular movie, if you just expect a sleazy, trashy italianate gore movie it delivers, but its utterly lacking the class and the surrealistic delirium of Suspiria and Inferno. Giallo should be good though, the presence of Brody is a good sign (I cant imagine him signing up if the script isnt at least decent), and lets face it - Giallo is Argento's primary genre, out and out supernatural shenanigans isn't really his specialty.
GIALLO MEANS "YELLOW"
by echobase

.. In Italian. Back in the old days (50s maybe ? not sure) there was series of books of crime stories in a yellow cover, hence why they called them simply giallo (or gialli for plural). The name is still used in Italy today to describe crime stories.

Yeah i agree that MOT has a "Fulci vibe"...the bleeding eyes, the opening murder, the BEYOND-esque climax and final shot. In fact,MOTHER OF TEARS reminds all the italian horror cinema from the 70's and 80's and it is a great, fun entertaining ride!
