There we got then. A whole raft of incredibly exciting projects. Of course, the fact they are Pixar is what makes them exciting, mainly - their philosophies of filmmaking are so spot on. Nice to see them embracing 3D. I too would have my wedding photos shot in steroscope if I could afford it.

I am infamous amongst my friends for never getting emotional in a film when anything happens to a human, child or adult, but damn i'm already so wacked out in love with the Wall-E character i was getting misty-eyed just reading that description of the self-destruct sequence, even though i knew the outcome would be good. Wall-E is just going to be the greatest Pixar film yet, i can't wait. Up sounds interesting. Personally it sounds great and I admire that Pixar are not afraid to embrace the idea that animation isn't a medium for kids it's a medium for everyone that's been hijacked for kids programming because it's easier to sell to kids. Up looks like their least kid-appealing film yet, very much a story for adults not children. I love that thay would do that but hope if its not commercially successful that their Disney masters won't slap them down. Next sounds like a cute idea, in DWA's hands i'd expect it to be awful (think Flushed Away) but i trust Pixar to deliver. The only thing i am unsure of here is Cars 2. I didn't hate Cars but it was the weakest Pixar movie and on this slate is the one i find least interesting. Still, thanks Quint for this fantastic insight into upcoming Pixar, especially the Wall-E and Up stuff, i am now excited for Up where is was curious and so desperate to see Wall-E I would gladly sacrifice seeing Indy and Batman if it would get me to Wall-E sooner. Great report.

over two years for Toy Story 3? Sigh...guess I'll put off killing myself. Again.

Um...wouldn't Andy have ditched his toddler toys before high school? How likely is it that Buzz, Woody and the gang would have remained in that home so long? Did ANYONE here still have their weebles when they were 18?

Do NOT get the hate for CARS. I enjoyed the hell out of that movie when I was expecting to not like it. To me it is so much better (for my tastes) than the overly kiddie-ish Monsters Inc and Finding Nemo. All Pixar is good, but some stories speak more to adults - and to me that was Cars. The other two are a little bit cutesie and they just don't resonate as much with me. Also there seems to be some red state blue state thing going on with CAR haters and I'm as Liberal as they come and I don't see it. Taste in movies is a strange and mysterious thing. Some idiots think Ratatouille sucked and didn't have enough "jokes" or action. (eye roll here) Oh well... To each his own. My top five Pixar goes like this - 1) Toy Story, 2) The Incredibles, 3) Ratatouille, 4) Cars, and 5) TIE: Toy Story 2 and A Bug's Life. And goddamnit, I'm 100% right and all of you are wrong.

Toy Story 3: Brave Little Toaster
by Teko

The plot sounds awfully familiar to me. Coincidence that Lasseter and a bunch of other Pixar vets worked on BRAVE LITTLE TOASTER and now they're doing another movie about anthropomorphic objects pining for their grown-up master who's gone off to college.
Pixar rock - but Cars 2 and Witherspoon?

Cars is the only film in my life I have ever walked out of - visuals aside there was absolutely zero for adults. Mater was possibly the most annoying animated character since JarJar Binks. The One-Man-Bands short before Cars was way better. Cars 2? Please no... Pixar you can do better! Toy Story 3 sounds so-so, The first was awesome, the second was almost more awesome but the bits with the Round-Up Gang were better than the bits with Buzz Lightyear and the old gang which were slightly lame, so hopefully the third one will be spot on. The Up story plot summary about the man and his wife had me in tears and then suddenly there a baddy - that's a damn shame - I think they have the first half of an awesome film but I hope they prove me wrong and stick the other half down my throat. I'm Scottish so can't wait for the Bear and the Bow. I hope they play it straight and don't make it goofy or contemporise it. 'Chapman says it’s a fairy tale in the tradition of Hans Christian Anderson and the Brothers Grimm set in Scotland' - good, cos it sounds darkly awesome - how fairytales should be. But Reese Witherspoon? Billy Connolly sounds good if he's not goofy, Emma Thompson's half-Scottish so will be topnotch, but Reese Witherspoon??? Anyway, can't wait for 'Wall-E', 'Up' and 'the Bear and the Bow'. Top article btw. I'm really excited about those films.

...because I no longer like animated movies. I can certainly appreciate that Pixar films are far superior to, say "Shark Tale" or "Hoodwinked," but I'm always surprised by the number of adults who get excited by these movies. To each his own, of course, (like most film geeks, I like many films that your average critic/mainstream moviegoer would frown upon). As a child, I would have eaten this stuff up, but I fell asleep during "Finding Nemo," "Cars" and "The Incredibles." I wish I could get into them, but I just can't. Perhaps the real world has stripped me of my childlike innocence...

"They told us that they cooked up the idea for TOY STORY 3 at a writer’s retreat with all the original TOY STORY people. Everybody to the person that was there for the first two were there hammering out the story for the third film, with the big exception of the late Joe Ranft." So either Joss Whedon is juggling this and Dollhouse or Pixar have just handed him a mighty "fuck you" to his massive contribution.
So.... can someone from AICN say something?

Really? Perhaps it was a long day at work?

I admit to falling asleep throughout my first viewing of Spider-Man in 2002. But I attribute that to 1) my getting up at 2am that morning to drive 1,000 miles from DC to Indianapolis then spending the rest of that day walking around a a convention center and 2) it being a midnight showing.

Whedon?

I know he's worshipped around here, but he was just a script doctor on the original and from what i've looked into, didn't seem to be a key player. If you read about the history of Pixar, you'll find that Disney almost killed the original TS with its script notes. Not sure if JW was part of that group that mislead the project or helped get it back on track, but can't find any notes that states he made a serious contribution.

Whedon's contribution to Toy Story
by hrogthrar
Apr 11th, 2008

he talks about here http://www.natoonline.org/info cus/05augustseptember/whedonun cut.htm particularily "And they sent me the script and it was a shambles, but the story that Lasseter had come up with was, you know, the toys are alive and they conflict. The concept was gold. It was just right there. And that’s the dream job for a script doctor: a great structure with a script that doesn’t work. A script that’s pretty good? Where you can’t really figure out what’s wrong, because there’s something structural that’s hard to put your finger on? Death. But a good structure that just needs a new body on it is the best. So I was thrilled. I went up to Pixar [the Northern California-based animation studio which produced “Toy Story”], and stayed there for weeks and wrote for, I think, four months before it got greenlit, and completely overhauled the script. There was some very basic things in there that stayed in there. The characters were pretty much in place except for the dinosaur, which was mine. I took out a lot of extraneous stuff, including the neighbor giving the kid a bad haircut before he leaves. There was a whole lot of extraneous stuff. And then there was finding the voices. We were still casting. Ironically, Disney put the kibosh on the person they wanted for Buzz Lightyear because he wasn’t famous enough, so we couldn’t use Jim Carrey. But they had Tom Hanks in place. It was basically finding the voices and sitting with them while they came up with the gags and going over the boards and working with Jeffrey Katzenberg. It was a great, great process because you’re sitting around with a bunch of animators who are basically drawing caricatures of each other, getting Sharpie headaches and making a lot of jokes, and they’re the sweetest bunch of guys. "
