that's a little confusing. But most of this looks surprisingly good... talking dog movie, maybe not. Really looking forward to real animation being back, though I can't figure how to make a great story out of Rapunzel. And Bear and the Bow sounds very appealing to me... that's the first I've heard of that

I can understand them doing the sequal to Cars as an excuse to get money for future projects, considering there are so damn many of them.

Why Cars? Why not The Incredibles (at first glance, it seems like the easiest movie to do a sequel to, though with Pixar anything goes), or Finding Nemo, or Monster's Inc. or any of the others? I guess I understand Rataouille since it didn't gear near as much attention as their other recent movies (though 200 mil is still a lot of attention). But... yeah... Cars?

First of all, I can see the temptation to make Tinkerbell movies, because that character is a very hot seller at Wal-Mart. Second, "The King of the Elves" aka "Shadrach Jones and the Elves" sounds like a very cool adaptation and with Pixar's light touch should prove highly imaginative and entertaining. That is all.

He's already conquered the world of animation, so now he's off to try his hand at live-action. Hopefully after "1906," he'll start on that "Incredibles" sequel. In the meantime though, any Pixar film (except "Cars") is gold to me, so I'm pretty sure I'll love at least at least a couple of these. But "Cars 2"? WTF?

And there I was all excited that Brad Bird would be directing Cars 2, thus hopefully elevating it beyond the original. Alas. It could still happen though. I think Cars was a pretty good concept, just executed less-than-Pixar quality. Anyway, I'm surprisingly excited for "The Princess and the Frog", it'll be cool to see some old-fashioned Disney animation again.

can't we just let a good thing be? I see NO need for an Incredibles sequel, so please stop crying about it. on the other hand, let disney cash in on the CARS franchise for all it's worth, since it's one of the weaker Pixar movies (although still strong, imo) and as it's been mentioned before, it's a huge merchandising cash cow for them. anyway, beyond WALL-E, "Up" sounds really promising. and isn't there supposed to be something that Brad Bird is working on for Pixar at the moment?

Repeat, kids LOVE Cars. As a 32 year old, I think Incredibles is amazing and far superior. But I have friends with small children, and those kids are obsessed with Cars - they love the movie and the characters. That is why they are still making toys. That is why an attraction is being built at California Adventure. That is why a sequel is happening. There are millions of fans for this movie, they just happent to be children. I know, I know, catering to kids with animation is crazy, but sometimes it happens...

I remember seeing the trailer on a dvd a few years ago and then hearing that the folks at Pixar were appalled by how awful the story and animation was so far so they shut it down and vowed no more direct to dvd sequels. Then I saw a new teaser on the 101 Dalmations dvd. What made them change their minds? Did they rewrite the script? I certainly hope so.

The lack of marketable celebrity voice "talent" and the use of a septuagenarian protagonist tells me this one's probably driven by a worthwhile story and not market-research. The rest seem ordinary to dire: Cars 2? Who the fuck needs it? Not kids, that's for sure - how come they don't deserve new characters and stories? Wouldn't all that artistic labour be better spent on fresh, original works? Ah, hell, screw it... it's all been said before. Here comes the new boss, same as the ol' boss...
Catering to kids with animation
by Doc_Martigan
Apr 9th, 2008
01:47:24 AM
No. They aren't catering to kids. Directly anyhow. They are catering to all the shoes and shirts and DVD's and toys they sold along with the movie. And yes I know that kids are the ones that screamed until their parents bought all that crap, but this "for the kids" notion is complete BS. They are doing it for the money. Which is fine with me, because it's a guaranteed formula for more of the same and who can blame them. Hopefully they will put the profits to use on some quality projects though. Not real interested in any of these...

There's every reason to be doing this and ditching everything else on that slate of Tinkerbell movies they got lined up for the next ten years! There are endless stories they can do with these colourful set of characters like having them in a fish out of water tale like being in the UK or Russia facing off against new Foreign based supervillains. They could do a sory of the kids now in their late teens trying to form their on super taem like the JLA or Avengers. An Alien body snatchers invasion tale with the family facing off against Aliens that can change shape etc. It's simply screaming for a sequel and theres so much you can do with a this great family of Superheroes and we all want to see more of Brad Bird as Edna Mode. So come on Disney, Incredibles is the 2nd biggest hit Pixar ever had so give the people more of what they liked!

Two of Pixars greatest directors not in the line is very very disapointing. Mind you, it seems Lassiter does not seem interested in directing anymore. But that is not to knock Lassiter, in fact Lassiter is using his clout to ensure the best talents are being utilised for allows them room for creative freedom. I still look forward to much of this lineup.

I'm not complaining. There is plenty of comedy gold left in that premise i.e., self delusional dog/toy mistaken their own fictional powers for reality but later realise they dont need super powers to be a hero. Difference is, that in Toy Story, this was a sub plot, whereas in Bolt, it is the whole plot.

He's said plenty of times in the past that he'd do another one if he came up with a story he felt was as good as the first. Which is admirable, if a little frustrating - someone just lock him in a secluded lodge somewhere and refuse to release him until he has a franchise worth of pitches.

Where the hell are we supposed to see all these 3D flicks? I doubt there's more than a dozen cinemas in the whole of the UK capable of showing them. And do we believe the other faceless multiplexs will be spending money to upgrade when the film-going experience is already run as cheaply as possible? I used to love going to the cinema but since they stopped using projectionists and allowed chav scum to ruin every screening, I've stopped going. Once 3D is available in the home, I'm going to be a full-time shut in.

nobody is that bullet proof forever. Seems like they're chasing dollars now. I don't know, even with their streak, I still don't feel they ever matched either of Disney's artistic streaks either the earlier Snow White/Fantasia through... where did that end, Peter Pan?... or Rescuers through to Mulan, which I think is highly underrated. Even Tarzan has its artistic moments. Maybe it's just the comedy schtick that CGI seems to have been stuck with, not allowing it to branch out into other kinds of stories effectively. I'm not sure how long their creative freedom will last. Even without Eisner, that company is, or some reason, prone to the worst micro-managing of its artists, particularly in animation over long periods of time. I think the magic of it attracts the suits to want to 'tinker' (no pun intended) with the projects, which usually results in diluting them. Isn't Steve Jobs like the number one holder of Disney stock now? I wonder if he can provide any protection for the animation unit if they start turning out turkeys? The problem with animation is as soon as they have a couple of movies that don't make enough money, rather than letting them ride it out until they get their groove back, you get what happened with traditional animation. It's unimaginable that instead of attributing their losses to lack of creativity and freedom by the animators, they decided to just dismantle traditional animation... Disney?!

moved on to fairies around 2000 (the 90s White Wolf RPG Changeling the Dreaming helped push this old/new again fascination). Crappy artists like Amy Brown and Jasmine Becket-Griffith became popular selling cards and t-shirts (but it did help better artists like Froud and DiTerlizzi rebound, and paved way for better artists like Paulina Stuckey-Cassidy).

Fairy popularity trickled down into the mainstream via Hot Topic stores, which led to Barbie fairies, Winx Club, etc. other bastardizations. Disney just recently caught the tail end of the fad via pushing Tinkerbell. (My girlfriend has been selling her faerie and fantasy art since the 90s, how I'm aware of this).

With this film, Pixar will be breaking their self-imposed 1-film-a-year rule. This seems like a mistake because having one a year has made Pixar films (and 2D Disney films of old) seem like real 'event' pictures. Upping the production rate makes their slate seem scattershot and will almost certainly reduce their hit rate.

"the Cars saga"?
by Jack Colby

People will call anything a saga nowadays. It's a real word with a specific meaning, look it up. Cars being a saga --at installment 2 no less-- is really pushing it. Also, why they are delaying John Carter for half a decade or more is beyond me, considering the interest people have it it already. Maybe they are scared that Cameron's Avatar will be too close, story-wise?
