It just wasn't as magical as their other films. Maybe because cars in general are something you're either going to dig or will just leave you cold. i'm sort of in the latter category on that one. But even the overly bubbly designs of the cars themselves seemed like something more akin to Dreamworks than the always on point Pixar. Ahh well.

Now there is a movie that warrants a sequel! Why are they doing another Cars for, it was nice but it was hardly their best flick. I wanna se Mr Incredible, Dash, Frozone, Elasti-girl and the rest going at more bad-guys. And bring that composer back for another great James Bond-esque soundtrack, that shit was super dope! Maybe there's more merchandising opportunities for a Cars sequel?

The only DVD from Pixar EVER which i did not buy. What a mediocre offering. Great CG, but lame story (LAME! From Pixar!) and uninteresting characters (UNINTERESTING! From Pixar!)

Back to my Incredibles-DVD. I won't watch Cars 2 if it is not a incredibly better sequel than the original.

I believe that 'Toy Story 3' will be released in 2010, following 'Up' in 2009. No idea what the 2011 film will be. But a 'Cars' sequel rather than an 'Incredibles' sequel? That really is ludicrous (unless 'Incredibles 2' will be in 2011, which I doubt). Surely one of the things that Pixar was most admired for was the way it concentrated on original films rather than sequels (except for the 'Toy Story' franchise).

CARS was perfectly fine entertainment. Good story, lot of heart, memorable characters. No, it was not high art like Ratatouille, but last I checked, kids aren't playing with Remy the Rat dolls. Pixar is first and foremost a business, and Cars continues to be a cash cow for them. I look forward to a sequel.

Cars and A bugs life were not that great. The animation was great but I just couldn't get into the stories. Not Pixars best. Now, Batman Begins on the other hand was NOT great at all and I'd LOVE to see the studio push The Dark Suck/Knight back to 2012 because we're supposed to have an apocolypse or something like that. Then we would all be spared that misery.

I posted this a long time ago, but I still haven't gotten over it, so here it is: One of my biggest problems with "Cars" was that there is no reason for these cars to exist. There aren't any people! Why do they have doors and seats and trunks? I get that it's a fantasy, but I just can't get past the fact that there is no reason for cars to even exist without humans. Pixar's other anthropomorphic movies make sense because humans exist...I can "believe" that toys talk and move around when we're not watching, or that bugs are fighting an epic battle with the help of a flea circus, but I can't "believe" cars exist without people.

I was so bored by Cars, I left the cinema, found an X-Men vending machine, bought six little X-Men figures and went back into the cinema to play with them.

I was 24 at the time, not high, not ADD, no mental impairments I am aware of, just bored. I would have gone home by my ride home (heh, I don't drive - CLUE!) wanted to stay til the finish.

BORING movie. Can't say it enough. It's the only Pixar movie that I out and out dislike.

Having said that, my nephew LOVES the toys and has the movie playing in the background probably more often than not.

It doesn't matter what any of you thought of CARS. The simple fact of the matter is that the first one raked in more $$$ for Disney in merchandising alone than ANY other Disney film in history.

THAT'S why they're making a sequel. So stop wasting your energy complaining about it. Life's full of disappointments. Learn to deal with it.

That movie was awful. Every other Pixar world makes total sense and is thought down to the tiniest detail. The fish world made perfect sense. The same with the rules of the toys. But Cars was just Generic Universe where the cars happen to be alive. It could have been pelicans or robots (sans the insipid race backstory) and be the same movie, and that's not a good thing. You might think I'm being picky, but this is what separates Pixar's craftsmanship from other animated dreck, and it just wasn't there in the movie. Powerlines, hotel rooms, high rises -- it wasn't a world populated by cars, it was some post apocalyptic world where the humans are all dead and the cars have come to life.

Cars, as the weakest Pixar entry, also has the most room to grow and be exceeded by a sequel, as long as they get the story right, which they do more often than not.< /br>< /br>That said, I prefer it when Pixar avoids sequels altogether and focuses on new, more original work.

Maybe this is Pixar's chance to improve upon what went wrong with Cars. While I did not hate it, it certainly wasnt the same quality and caliber as the rest of Pixar's work. Maybe they know this and can make something good from it. I would rather see other sequels to their movies (Incredibles, Toy Story, Monster's Inc.) or new ideas, but if they fix their one weak movie than we can all look positively back on the films. Just a thought, I still trust Pixar to rock the shit out of everything, i.e. Wall-e, or at least it looks awesome.

they pick Cars? Don't get it. Does anyone really think Cars was Pixar's best flick? As others have said, The Incredibles was not only a much better movie and also sets up for another story more than any other Pixar movie. Cars certainly wasn't bad, but it also wasn't in quite the same league as The Incredibles, Nemo or even Monster, Inc. Unless they have some ingenious story idea here, this may be the first really questionable move they've made. Of course Pixar has yet to really misfire, so I guess I can still give them the benefit of the doubt until that happens.

but it's not their worst either. In fact they're still to do a bad film as far as I'm concerned, but I'd put A Bug's Life as their weakest film. The Incredibles, Toy Story and Ratatouille stand at the top for me, with Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc, Cars and Finding Nemo next up. Wall-E though looks like it might give Incredibles and Toy Story a good challenge though.

Cars 2 could be great if they shorten it and open up the world past Radiator Springs. The best animation in the first are the scenes at the race track and the real-world stuff (the truck travelling the roads at night is an unexciting scene but so well animated it's almost photorealism). Like everyone else I'd happily swap it for The Incredibles 2 but at least they're not trying to force a story out of one of their films whose story and characters are definitely over - Finding Nemo took way more money but a part 2 of that wouldn't work. At least Cars 2 has places for its characters to go.

...they're making this sequel because millions of boys around the world bought Cars Shirts, Cars Toys, Cars Bed Sheets, Cars Tooth Brushes, Cars Costumes, Cars Sippers, Cars Cereal, Cars DVDs, Cars Took Kits and of course, Cars Cars. Didn't see a lot of Incredibles merchandise flying off the shelves. So don't think we'll see a sequel anytime soon.

Cars was okay. great animation and some nice stuff storywise but its reeeeaaallly hard to imagine a situation in which anyone would willingly say 'lets go see Cars 2!' with any enthusiasm.

it'd be more like the kind of thing that you'd watch in an airport if your flight was delayed by several hours and you had nothing better to do.

Cos i love Pixar (im an Animation student, so it goes beyond just liking the films) and i liked Cars..... but i really dont think it even needs a sequel... theres not an easy story to tell in that universe. the entire universe existed to tell that story, it wasnt a pre-existing idea. I absolutly agree The Incredibles is the only Pixar film that NEEDS a sequel. Cars 2 will really have to have something hugely appealing to make me convinced. It cant just simply be something threatening the town which in the end calls for some kind of race..... there honestly is no story i even want to see in the universe.... and this is an animator with a Cars poster above his bed talkin.

for those that can't seem to understand why Cars 2 is being made... ITS CALLED $$$$$. Disney and Pixar ARE BUSINESSESES (someone quick, correct my spelling).

Cars is one of the only movies where the related toy line has actually increased revenue and profits the subsequential years following its release. Typically toy sales spike the year the movie comes out, then fade down after. CARS toy sales didn't.

its all about the money.

And you just know it's going to make money like it's going out of fashion - incredible for a third film released 11 years after the previous franchise entry.

Not to detract from your generalised perception, but I'm not sure I know of a single adult who loved Cars.

...but cars isn't necessarily one that needs a sequel. I think they are doing a sequel becuase that is when DCA will be opening their mega E Ticket Cars attraction (and wow what an attraction they got planned) a little earlier than the release of the movie and that momentum will be enough to generate the interest of the movie so this one will likely be a hit. For those not in the know, Toy Story ends with part 3. Lasseter always had a trilogy planned on his terms. I agree with the majority though, I still want my Incredibles 2 and John Carter which I hear is very likely closer to starting due to Disney about to write off the Narnia films after Dawn Treader.
Alas, Silver Chair, we hardly knew thee
by sambrook
Apr 8th, 2008
07:37:04 PM
I'm not surprised that Disney are nervous about Narnia. For starters it's a mistake to release Prince Caspian in the summer - it's hardly had any attention in such a busy season and yet there's pretty much no competition around Christmas time, the period the last Narnia film did so well in. And the cocky annonsement they made about there being a film of each book, one every year - fat chance. The Magician's Nephew is a good little read but would make a dull prequel onscreen; The Horse and his Boy is just dull and The Last Battle is far too dark, complex and religious too do justice to in a Disney film. It's about the rise of false religions leading to the end of the world - and characters are killed for no reason other than to live in heaven - except for the one who stopped believing who isn't allowed. It's a great, great book but ot for a Disney film. But at least finish with The Silver Chair and run even with the BBC adaptations.
Saying Cars is the worst movie

is like saying Tyra Banks is the worst supermodel, or Allyson Hannigan is the ugliest Scooby, or Allison Robertson is the ugliest guitar player. They're all still great and smoking. Cars was great. Photo-realistic, and the kids loved it. Plus it had a different feel overall. Lowest Pixar can do is 9.5 out of 10, so please stop complaining. And if so, please rate 100 animated movies that are better. WHat? There aren't even 10 that are better?

I'm not a car person at all. And I didn't like it much the first time -- kind of draggy. But after several dozen more times (kids) I really enjoy it. It's not their best but it's still quite good. Maybe it's because I've never been exposed to Larry the Cable Guy other beyond this film. I was going to add that it's more complicated to tell a story without a major villain, but then I realized very few Pixar movies have one. Maybe that's why they're so good.

Really. The toys for Cars has grossed Pixar, from what I've heard, more money than the toys from the other films combined. Add that to the fact that toy sales for Cars is actually increasing, not the other way around.

You could look at this as a bad thing, if you like. But Pixar enjoys making money, just like any other movie studio. I guarantee you, if Pixar didn't make money, they wouldn't make films at all. So year, it is a money decision, and a smart one at that.

Cars was also my least favorite Pixar film. But it isn't horrible and it is actually very personal to Lasseter. There is nothing wrong with this decision, just not our (geeks) favorite one by Lasseter and Co.

I loved THE INCREDIBLES, too, but a CARS sequel is not BABY GENIUSES 3, THE SANTA CLAUSE 4 or BARNYARD: THE RETURN, for Christ's sake. Why a Cars sequel makes sense...
by moto
Apr 8th, 2008
10:42:18 PM
Don't get me wrong, THE Pixar movie that warrants a franchise is The Incredibles... but Cars is their best performer in merchandising (upwards of $2 billion). Trust me, I know. My 2 1/2 son is obsessed with Cars. He has something like 74 of the die cast cars characters... and I gotta admit, his mom and I are obsessed with collecting them BUT that's because he flips out when he gets em so...

Beyond merchandising, Cars ranks up there with the Toy Story movies as far as being the most kid friendly of the bunch. Keep in mind, the 2-6 year olds that love Cars now and have all of the toys will be THE demographic 4 years from now for this sequel.

While it may be the weakest of the Pixar movies, it is certainly better and more memorable than any of the other CG movies out there. And I have to admit, it grows on you. Being a parent that watches it constantly, after a few viewings it's strange how much more you begin to like it. That's saying alot because I can't stomach the 90s Disney movies over and over like I can with Pixar movies.

As far as "Why no Incredibles sequel?"

Thankfully, Pixar doesn't make a sequel unless they have an outstanding story that takes the characters to new and better places... not location mind you, but character growth.

Obviously, since no Incredibles sequel has been announced, they haven't gotten to that point yet. You gotta respect that. I'd much rather they wait then jump into a sequel for the wrong reasons. Yeah, Cars is huge because of merchandising and the little ones, but I'm willing to bet that Pixar wouldn't waste 4 years of their time unless they had a better story than the first one. They did it with Toy Story 2, why can't they elevate Cars?

For the record, I think Ratatouille is the least ENJOYABLE Pixar release. Now, it's a great film and explores some great ideas. It deserved an Oscar and the accolades it received. But honestly, how many people are going to be revisiting that as much as the Toy Story movies, Monsters Inc., The Incredibles, Finding Nemo, and yes... Cars. In my mind, it was a bit TOO grown-up. But maybe because I could care less about cuisine. Who knows.

But will Larry the Cable guy still be around in 2011?

Repeat, kids LOVE Cars. As a 32 year old, I think Incredibles is amazing and far superior. But I have friends with small children, and those kids are obsessed with Cars - they love the movie and the characters. That is why they are still making toys. That is why an attraction is being built at California Adventure. That is why a sequel is happening. There are millions of fans for this movie, they just happent to be children. I know, I know, catering to kids with animation is crazy, but sometimes it happens...

Everything they produce is gold, but I do think Cars has been their weakest picture. Whereas toys, bugs and robots already have eyes and facial features, cars don't. So it was harder to make that leap and buy into the personification of automobiles. Toy Story, Nemo and Monsters remain their best work.

The chracters in cars are cars with eyes in their windshields. Windshields = the width of the car. Huge eyes equal cute. cute equals small kids love it and buy any and all merchandise. The reason we're getting a sequel is because the cars have some of the largest eyes of any animated characters outside of Hello Kitty or Pokemon.

The reason for Cars
by moderate
Apr 9th, 2008
10:17:16 AM
The very reason why Pixar are making Cars is because they made a liberal-progressive film known as the Incredibles. Yes its true, because of its liberal undertones Disney decided to make Pixar make a film for the mortage belt who don't really get those films with an anti-fascist message, heck if they knew what a fascist was they wouldn't have foolishly voted for one! So Cars is designed for those simple narrow mind anti-abortion pro gun redneck folk. Most of the Talk backers here are either a liberal-democrat or at worst a liberal republican. For every Liberal minded, outward film Pixar make Disney make they make cars. But that necessarily isn't a bad thing appealing to a broad audience.

Okay, my two kids love the movie, so I personally don't mind the thought of a sequel. I know it's 99.9% to drive more marketing - like Star Wars, they needed to make more movies because they've run out of toy variants (altho I still want my Apple car that was shown in all of what two frames)... But if anyone from Pixar is reading, please consider an INCREDIBLES sequel!

I respectfully disagree. I thought Nemo was brilliant and Monsters Inc was clever, original and entertaining. The trouble with cars is 1) weak story and 2) as someone above mentioned, the world of Cars has no people, and the inanimate objects that get animated don't have eyes or ears to begin with, so it's difficult to make that leap and believe, even for fun, that heaps of metal and rubber can talk and interact. Whereas with animals or toys I found it easier to buy into the fantasy of their coming to "life" and having "person"alities

1. 3-year old aren't the only ones who love CARS, but it was certainly geared more towards children than adults. 2. Poor, white people who like NASCAR were certainly NOT the only ones who saw this movie. 3. Owen Wilson only provided the voice. You didn't even have to look at his nose. What's that got to do with anything? 4. Maybe CARS wasn't the most original storyline, but unless Lightning McQueen rode around with a pet pig, CARS was far from a DOC HOLLYWOOD rip-off.

Cars breaks one of the Pixar tenets
by finky089
Apr 9th, 2008
04:14:30 PM
In every preceeding Pixar movie, the main characters have been somebody or something that lived among "regular" humans. The main characters lived lives that were in one way or another unknown to "regular" humans.

Toys that are really "alive"; Bugs who hav societies much like humans'; Monsters crossing between ther world and ours; Ocean creatures have societies much like humans'; Superheroes now live secretly among "regular" humans; Rodents have societies much like humans' (and can cook!).

But Cars, broke this mold - there were no humans. It took away a component that made the story a little more relatable to the viewing audience, who was not made up of living automobiles. Movies often use a character who will reflect somethign familiar to the general audience to help bring that audience closer to the main characters in a film (who are usually very different from the general audience viewing the film.)

It's why you have Vicki Vale and Knox in Burton's Batman; it's why you have Hobbits being relatively "ignorant" about the greater world outside the Shire; it's partially what Lois Lane is for in Superman (besides a love interest); it's one of the things that makes Spiderman so accessible to reader for almost 50 years.

ALl that said, Cars is not a "bad" movie, but I do think it was not as well-rounded as previous Pixar films. I thought it was better than I expected, but my expectations were low. It's a cute film, with a few clever moments, but it doesn't top, or get next to, Toy Story or Incredibles.

Finding Nemo - another Pixar film I'm not crazy about
by finky089
Apr 9th, 2008
04:19:42 PM
Visually, the film was amazing. The voice-acting was good, but this film never grabbed me the way some of the other Pixar films did. And I think it's partly because I had a hard time identifying with Brook's character (maybe b/c I don't have kids?) and Degeneres' character annoyed me 98% of the time she was on-screen. Plus, there wasn't really anything very interesting about either of the main characters - the Father and Nemo. The Father panicked the whole time and Nemo was a one-note "lost kid".

Again, not a bad job with the material that was written, but a critique of not flushing their personalities out to make these characters more interesting. I preferred the fish in the tank to almost all fo the other characters in the movie (the sharks are fine, too, but they're a minor role).

Incredibles was a 'liberal-progressive' film? Perhaps liberal in the classical definition of the word (with the emphasis placed on individualism both economic and social), but not the modern interpretation of liberal - and most definitely not progressive (which historically has more connections with the kind of nationalism associated with fascism).

I disagree, the whole premise of the film is about a man whose exciting life as a hero is taken away from him and through the need to provide for his family he must work as a capitalist slave and part take in the ratrace. His true desire however is to become a hero, a hero has no boss coming to him about sales figures, uniforms or trying to lower his pay. It is a liberal progressive film as it demonstrates the life of a family that is progressively minded. The intepretation of liberal that I am referring to is social-liberal, not classical. If anyone had the ability to live outside the capitalist sphere of "working your arse off for nothing or some arsehole insurance company" then I am sure the great majority would pick the other option. FDR once said that all human beings are entitled to a life that is free from fear and need. That need stems from a person's sacrifice to provide for their family even if they have to work one of those horrid 9-5 jobs working for the man.
