What's the big deal about IRON MAN?
by digital8
Apr 7th, 2008

I haven't heard almost anyone say a word about IRON MAN in my 25 years of living, but now that there is a movie based on this character that nobody ever talked about, a lot of people are very excited and such. I just can't get excited for a movie that a ton of other people are just suddenly ecstatic about.

Ironman has a funny level of fame. If you are a core comics fan, it's second nature for you to know him and you are shocked if someone doesnt know him. But he's never permeated the greater public consciousness the way Spider-man, Superman, Batman and Hulk have. Non-comic fans have literally no idea that Ironman exists. I learned this when I told some friends about the Ironman movie in a voice that was like "Hey they're doing an Ironman movie, isnt that cool" and they were like "whats ironman?" "a movie about triathlons?" "huh?" It was an eye opener. Certain musicians get a similar reaction. Basically Ironman is famous the same way Tom Waits and Elvis Costello are famous.

I'm pretty sure nobody else has even mentioned either of those two musical artists on this site. Congrats dude, somebody else here has cool taste in music, or is at least aware of cool music. And yeah, it's weird that some people don't really know about Iron Man. As a comic fan, I have really grown to appreciate the character over the years, especially in Ultimates (not the new arc, ugh), where I feel Tony Stark especially shines. Also, to those more interested in Iron Man stories, check out the New Avengers or the latest Captain America. He's only a bit part in the later, but he has some truly great scenes, like his battle with the Winter Soldier.

Obviously, AICN is a nerd site and most people here know the character (albeit the Jackson-as-Fury controversy shows how few people actually *read* the comics), but Shellhead is still a minor pop culture character. No previous movies, kitsch TV show or even remotely watchable cartoon put it on the map.

Not to mention that the marketing surrounding this flick has been very nerd-centered. Except the (poorly rated) SuperBowl spot, the trailers were more aimed toward the fanbase than anything else.

They seem to have understood that and for a few weeks shifted the plan with buttloads of pics and posters. Anyway, it couldn't be any lamer than Universal's marketing for Hulk 2.

but I'm reasonably excited for the movie. It comes out the day my finals end so me and my friends are seeing it as a cool down to mark the beginning of summer break. Everything I've seen of it looks interesting, and you can tell the people behind it are really passionate about it. One question though, who came first, Batman or IronMan? The whole "Billionaire dresses as superhero" thing seems kinda similar, no? Of course, I'm sure that's where the similarities end. IronMan looks much lighter then the Dark Knight.

A comic book character character has to have either a 1) popular memorable cartoon series that's at least 20 years old, or 2) a popular memorable primetime live action series that's at least 30 years old, or better yet 3) both and best of all 4) several of both. Superman and Batman are uber and sit on category 4, Wonderwoman and Hulk sit on category 2, and Spider-man, before his movies, was only a category 1. But when Ironman hasn't accomplished any of those, how can we get excited? (I know there was at least one Ironman cartoon, but it was neither popular nor memorable.)

This doesn't have the name recognition of Spidey or Batty, so wouldn't you think that they would be bombarding the general public with all things Iron Man by now to get people hyped over this movie? Unless you frequent film websites, you probably can't even remember when this film is being released. Maybe I'm not watching the right channels, but I have yet to see an Iron Man commercial on TV. We're less than a month away. Hope they get a move on, or this thing might end up underperforming.

One big problem with the superhero movies this summer
by Cory849
Apr 7th, 2008
01:56:22 PM
One big problem the superhero movies Hulk and Ironman have is that they both are based on the villain fighting a bigger version of themselves. Hulk->Abomination and Ironman->Ironmonger. Film goers are going to notice and view it as a cliche. What happened to the Mandarin? Wasnt he supposed to be the Ironman villain?
I'm lovin' it.

Honestly, what kind of world is it where nerds don't know IRON MAN? This is looking damned good, and not just because of the rip snortin' action bits. What has me sold is Downey's Stark. Stark is a really, really good character, and Downey has the arrogant jerk thing down solid. And since we all know he drinks, THAT side of Stark should be easy. Bring it on.
What about the Madarin? (corey849)

Favreau confirmed it, but somewhere down the road they shifted gears. I read the novelization (I know, I could've read a real book instead^^) and he's hardly mentioned. The terrorist's flag [beware, spoiler here] is a big X circled with 10 rings.

Big deal.

Downey's Stark
by SpencerTrilby
Apr 7th, 2008
02:09:35 PM
I agree about the arrogant bit.

Two complaints though

A/ we're not supposed to know Downey was an addict. Some people think it adds something to his part (which is quite in contradiction with the essence of acting); I think it will bug some people precisely because of RDJ's past antics we're not supposed to know anything about in the first place.

B/ the "arrogant" bit, according to the trailers, is backed up by some cynical attitude. It contradicts the classic origins (where Stark was an idealistic type) and leans more toward the "modern" writing. I find that a bit lazy, cynicism is really the cheap writer's way to make a character "the guy you'll love to hate". See Jack Sparrow.

But the armors look cool. I guess that's enough to have my ass on a theater seat. I'm weak.

Stark was never a cynic. He was playboy
by toadkillerdog
Apr 7th, 2008
03:08:56 PM
There is a big difference. The 1960's incarnation had him 'quickly' go from weapons maker/industrialist, to somewhat of an idealist. The late 1970's early 1980's make-over (The brilliant David Michelinie/Bob Layton) collaboration, in-which the Alcoholism was introduced, still had not turned him into a cynic. He was a rich playboy, who thought he had it all, and happened to enjoy distilled spirits - a little too much. When business and personal problems seem beset him, he turned in force to alcohol. The cynicism and some might say fascism, shown by Anthony Stark these days is not in accordance with the tradition of the character.

The reason Batman and Superman have pervaded the pblic conscience is because they've been around for a long time. The reason Spiderman and Hulk have pervaded it is that THEY'VE HAD MOVIES BASED ON THEM. I'm not talking about Ang Lee and Sam Raimi, I'm talking about the widespread, merchandised cartoons and live action things that have been coming out since the sixties. Iron Man had a pretty mediocre, short-lived cartoon in the nineties. It doesn't mean anything about the character himself, it just means whatever executives at FOX kept saying, nah, Spiderman is an easier sell.
Well said toadkillerdog

Apr 7th, 2008
03:23:31 PM
My hat's off to you.

Like I said earlier, today it's much easier to make a character turn from asshole to hero by making him a cheap cynical prick first, rather than giving him beliefs that could be controversial. A hero who makes weapons out of patriotism rather than greed? No fucking way!

In that regard, some scenes in the trailers were in contradiction with the character. Peter David did a great job in the novelization, by adding some political statements but will they translate to the screen, where the PG-13 crowd wants cheap laughs and minimal use of their brain cells?

Thank You, SpencerTrilby

I am a very long time Iron Man fan, and although I truly detest what they have done with the character in the comic book these days (I do realize that writers need to feel like they can change a character to enliven the franchise, and I also suspect that he will return to his normal self in the future, but I do not have to like it), it has not dimmed my fondness for the "Golden Avenger' in the slightest, and I am very excited about the movie. Seeing him in a big-budget movie, and having the non shell-head fans panting in anticipation of the event, is very rewarding to an old fan. Now, when I actually see how they have treated the character both IM and TS, not just clips, then I will render judgement, but I like what I have seen so far.

digital8, what's the big deal about IronMan..?
by CeejayNightwing
Apr 7th, 2008
04:36:29 PM
The fact that it's Iron Man is big deal enough. For real comic fans the world does not revolve around four superheroes split between Marvel and DC comics. If you don't know who Iron man is then you have no idea who the Avengers are or The Mighty Thor, Hawkeye, Giant man etc. The average non comic reading Joe has grown up with cartoons, tv shows and films centered around the same bunch of heroes for years so with the event of CGI making practically anything possible, they're quizzical at why we all get hyped when another of our favorite comics gets turned into a live action movie. Don't ask what the big deal is, do your home work oon wiki and see the movie if it peaks your interest but don't come here on geek-fanboy-central and act like you're surprised we're all excited about this picture, it's just far too overly pretentious a stance to take and it makes you look dumber than you realize.

No, not the campy 60's version (although John Vernon's voiceover was perfect for Stark/Shellhead.)but the 1995 season which more or less followed the storyline from the comic's canon, The armor Wars in particular.

The intro was also cool in which Stark bangs the anvil emitting shadows of formoer IM armors, not to mention that chessy arena rock song "I, am Ironman..!"Disney/Buena Vista owns the rights for the series' DVDs but will not release them in the US.(bastids!)One of the better Marvel animated series, although that's not saying much.

Looking forward to the Movie which falls near my B-day. Niiiccee!

Iron Man isn't exactly Hellboy, in that Joe Public doesn't know who the fuck he is. I would say that he's a more popular and recognized character than Ghost Rider, Silver Surfer, Elektra, Blade, Daredevil, half of the X-Men or anyone in the Fantastic Four (possible exception being Dr. Doom.) And they've chosen to make him look exactly like he does in the comics, so there will be a bit of iconic recognition even for those who don't know who he is. I mean, at some point in most people's lives they probably heard the Sabbath song or heard about the triathlon of the same name and became aware that a comic book superhero with the same name exists. And even if they didn't, even if nobody knows who the hell he is, the character still has a lot going for him in that he doesn't have a lot of previous baggage to overcome (I'm looking at you, Hulk) and a popular trailer has been out for what, almost a year now?

If i read your paragraph correctly Gwai-lo:Where do you get that Ironman is more recognized than the fantastic four??..my mom knows who the fantastic four are, mainly thanks to the 60s cartoon..I dont believe ironman had a cartoon back then..granted ironman is a well-known superhero, but you just went a lil too far in saying the public is less aware of fantastic 4...now do they suck more than ironman in my opinion, hell yes! FF4 fans=gaylords

As well as Captain America, Hulk, Spidey. The FF are perhaps more recognizable than IM, but Iron Man has been around for quite a while, and is a not an unknown. I would hazard he is far more well known than Blade was.

i was not aware that he did have a cartoon, i guess i am wrong on that..And even if the ff4 beat ironman to the punch with their two movies I hope this film (Ironman) will erase them from memory... check out this live display of the iron monger at comic-con http://shopmobius.com/blog/wp- content/uploads/2007/08/ironma n.jpg

They haven't posted it on here yet, but I figured this is all comic related, they've released a video of Maggie Gylenhall as Rachel Dawes endorsing Harvey Dent...even in this 90 second clip her acting is loads better then Katie Holmes'...hehe....

Iron Man a better-written character than Batman

Tony Stark is a great creation: brilliant inventor; playboy, irresponsible drunk, self-centred lout. It was Frank Miller who created the brooding, damaged Batman we all love. Tony Stark started out that way, because Stan the Man made sure all his superheros were flawed. And Robert Downey Jr. was born for this role; he fits it like Mickey Rourke does Marv.

Possibly...but for me, the fact that he was made into a Mego action figure gives him all the clout he needs. Go Stark!

I don't know, she seems like one of those actresses that critics like but audiences don't really care for. She just has a weird look to her, imo, and i don't even think her acting was much better than Katie Holmes in this clip.
