TRON and RACER
by mr.brownstone
Apr 7th, 2008
07:22:37 AM
The thing with TRON is it took place inside a computer so the artificiality of it was organic to the story. With this it just seems distancing and so divorced from logic that tension and excitement will be non-existent. As far as throwing in The 5th Element comparison, there was a layer of grime in that which came *closer* to selling it as a world than this. Anyway, I hope it works in the context of the movie, I really do.

It was also a cartoon, mr.brownstone. Which is why it's so "divorced from logic". The Wachowskis haven't bother to put the movie into a realistic setting. They've really just expanded and enhanced the universe of the show. What works for you as a world exactly? Seems like bright colors are just a turn off for you.
mach 5 replaces mach 6?

Watching some of this i'm starting to think Speed is gonna start out in the mach 6 and then have to go back to his old mach 5 due to whatever reason.

But I don't think the Bros. have the chops to really make it sing. At best it will most likely fall short of Tron, I think, because while that film had many shortcomings, it had great performances alongside the wonderful aesthetic and occasionally incredible set pieces.

Was that type of animation mix ever attempted again in a movie? Because there's where the difference is: nobody had ever done anything like Tron before or since, while this just looks like extremely advanced CGI with colors that make your colon bleed.

The Wachowskis haven't disappointe me. All 3 Matrix films were great! Even V for Vendetta was pretty good though I've never read the comic. This looks like great fun! It's like they heard all the negative comments about the matrix Reloaded's car chase being too slow-mo and decided to push the adrenaline to the max on this one. I wonder if they get to use any of the stuff they couldn't do in the matrix in this one. Joel Silver did say there were action pieces and events that they simply couldn't do or finish in the Matrix sequels, particularly the car chase. Did they ever put out that advertized but totally forgotten Art of the matrix Reloaded and Revolutions book? What the hell happened to that? I want it!

I was never much of a Speed Racer fan, even as a kid. The movie has a lot of flashy, razzle-dazzle effects and at least they got rid of the queer looking neck scarf that Speed wore in the cartoon. I think I MIGHT see this when it comes out on DVD.

Aquatarkus - Tron
by Autodidact
Apr 7th, 2008

No Aquatarkus, nobody has ever done the animation technique from Tron again... as in "photo-roto"scoping with multi-matting and backlit gels. They took every frame of footage shot, photocopied it, did multiple roto masks, and shot separate backlit gel layers for every goddamn frame too. Any sequel really needs to at least computer-simulate the technique.
Matrix

When The Matrix came out I was completely obsessed with it. I was so goddamn excited for the sequels that I dragged two completely unrelated friends with me to the midnight premiere of Reloaded in my town. I saw Reloaded seven times in the theatre (four times regular screen, three times in IMAX). Reloaded was absolutely fantastic to me, until Revolutions came out and not only did it leave questions unanswered, it made things more murky, nonsensical, and incoherent. Not to mention the action and filming became really self-conscious and lame. Anyhow, after I saw Revolutions for the third time in theatres, I finally figured out that the Wachowskis had lost the plot and no matter how many times I watched the movie it would not bring me satisfaction.

This didn't make me want to see the movie more than i already did, but I am still psyched. even though the racing looks a lot more like the ads for the movie CARS looked than i thought it would. Like, it is obviously CGI, is my point. I thought they'd make it look at least a little real. But whatever, I am getting high as a fuck-motherer and seeing this thing. (in the god damn theatre, dude. seeing a movie like this at home on DVD is like going to the Grand Canyon by looking at a national geographic magazine with pictures of the grand canyon in it.)

Wachowskis are hit and miss. Like others the first matrix rocked, second was ok to boarding on fail, third? Umm. "crickets" V was not a great but an ok movie, just slow. I still think this movie looks over kill in the cg department. I will wait for this to feature as Encore's new movie down the road.

kinda like the matrix combined those two theyre doing it again. HOW is this something we've never seen, leave it to the stupid fucking actors and joel silver to exclaim that "no one has ever seen" its such horseshit. it looks like the racing games i played back when arcades were everywhere. we've never seen it? howbout podracing only i think that was far cooler than this shit. videogame videogame videogame, yup we've seen it and we've played it.

It's working quite well for me... well judging from the trailers anyway...

And pierrotlefou... ideally they're talking about live action films here... not video games and anime. Have you seen anything like this in live action films? And racing games in arcades back then looked like shit... However the new Gran Turismo is looking mighty fine! And speaking of anime, has anyone seen the trailer for another new racing anime called 'Red Line'? Now that looks awesome!

BUUUUUT we HAVE seen it before its not a NEW reality or world its very familiar, id venture to say AVATAR will be closer to something we've never seen, and speaking of cameron, you could say before T2 came out that you genuinely havent seen anything like it, that means its groundbreaking or new. doing a live action anime/videogame is exactly that, a "live action "version of something we've seen in lots of forms. you could say the same if "HALO" came out- "audiences havent seen anything like this" and it would be true, we HAVENT literally seen that, but you get the gist of what im saying. unless you in something truly groundbreaking goddman actors and producers should stop fucking saying "you've never seen anything like this" they say it with such authority and its always bullshit.
Still looks kinda lame to me

^^And I completely agree with you pierrotlefou, we HAVE pretty much seen this all before. For some reason the Wachowskis especially seem to be fond (or contractually obligated) to try to pass off every repetitive, pro-forma thing they do as some sort of crazy new filmic experiment that's SOOO revolutionary that it couldn't possibly be like anything we've ever seen before. Oh right, you mean like those groundbreaking products of your "uncompromising vision" that were the derivative shitpiles known as Matrix 2, Matrix 3 and V for Vendetta? My eyes, my eyes bled from the newness of it all!

Having watched many films for many years, I've found myself becoming somewhat jaded about the 'sameness' of so many mainstream flicks. On top of that, we're in an era of seemingly endless sequels that just compound the problem. To see something as fresh and innovative as 'SPEED RACER' is incredibly exciting. You just know you're going to have a truly once in a lifetime experience with this film.

I know people have highly divisive opinions on 'THE MATRIX RELOADED' and 'THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS', but my personal experience indicates that most people who don't like the sequels tend not to understand them. Which is fine. Movies like Darren Aronofsky's 'THE FOUNTAIN' suffered from similar reactions.

The difference is that 'THE MATRIX TRILOGY' is regarded as an "action" series, and people aren't used to the idea of mixing intelligence with action.

But if there's one thing the Wachowskis have proved with movies like 'BOUND' and 'THE MATRIX' is that they can do mainstream movies easier than most people take a piss ('BOUND' was written off-the-cuff as an "in" to making 'THE MATRIX', remember).

With that in mind, I see no reason why 'SPEED RACER' shouldn't rock on every single level.
