We need a symposium of film lovers who spend all year, every year planning huge film events all over the country. No seasonal bullshit. I'm talkin' the creation of a movie culture that actually resembles culture. Movies are art (well some of them at least) and there are thousands of classic films that deseve to be touted as such. Hell, even some new films can be called art. I don't want box office returns to be the only factor. I want stories, fantastic acting, amazing special FX. I want escape. I want familiarty. I want to be entertained. Movies are really our only option for one stop (in most cases, not counting sequels) entertainment. I'd say books are in the equation, but worldwide attention spans seem to rival goldfish and literacy these days means you've read all 7 Harry Potter books.

The fans need to step up and make this happen. Not just because I said so (that should be reason enough), but because as a whole movies are the one resounding cultural contribution America has provided that the entire world has embraced.

Realize that I'm right and obey.

Sounds interesting... sounds like that "Raiders" kiddie remake

Are they still on track to turn that real-life story into a scripted drama (to be written by Daniel Clowes)?

This may sound cynical, but I predict we'll be seeing a few more films like this, as Generation X keeps breeding and starts entering middle age.

In other words, I'd like to see this film

But the very notion of film festivals or special screenings in my area is as foreign as kilts and haggis.

I think you're on the right track, although I'd love to see more Alamo type theaters in Europe as well. There's no reason not to go international, if you're gonna franchise a great idea.

I saw Son of Rambow in Austin after BNAT btw and it is awesome. Will Poulter, the kid who exposes the other one to First Blood reminded me of River Phoenix in Stand By Me. he's really good for a kid.
Hell yeah Northlander

International Alamos. I guess in France they could call it something like Bastille and in Britain they could call it The Tower or The Palace. Russia would have to be The Kremlin though. They'd just have to theme the names to mean "a fortification or imposing structure" in each language.

Ah yes, we Brits are renowned for our fortified and imposing palaces! Alamo franchise is a sweet idea, though. Also 'Son of Rambow' is awesome.
Hey Yeti, what would you call it?

I'm going off of American provided textbooks for my knowledge of much of the non-American world. I know The Tower of London is supposed to be a site of heinous history (torture and ravens with clipped wings), which is why I used it. I put The Palace in there because, if I were British/English(or whatever the non-offensive, accepted term is) I would be fuckin' pissed that my tax dollars still supported a "royal" family. Also, since you're British/English can you let me know if over in England you have available the complete series of Count Duckula? In the U.S. we've got only the first season available and that was released in 2005!

Franchise The Alamo!!!!!!!!!!!!

... despite having a horribly frantic train ride to Brooklyn and my usual prickly demeanor, this movie put a huge shit-eating grin on my face- truly a disarming and sincere piece of work. So glad that this is FINALLY going to get seen.

We have a bona fide classic here. A real Back to the Future sort of level of classic, with the same overall level of appeal, wit, smarts and filmmaking chops on display. Of course, anybody who knew Hammer and Tongs previous work would just know they have a whole heap of films this good rattling around in their heads waiting to get out. The film is on release in the UK right NOW so, if you're over here, I really can't recommend it enough.
