... considering it was a casual conversation, I wasn't recording it. That's why I'm hoping I can do a formal interview with him further down the road and ask him about all of that on the record. He's a great storyteller, and a shitty paraphrase of what he said wouldn't really do him justice.

a strange experience indeed to meet someone like that. 'Never meet your idols' is what they say and whilst a cliche it as rings true. I'm genuinely glad he seemed authentic and took interest Drew

Ultimately Ramis is just another guy at the end of the day, it's some of his work that elevates him. Despite it being the nature of his industry it's still crazy to think some things he did decades ago still generate such positive/negative feedback. Imagine if some came up to you in the street and say 'Hey, that day of work you had back in the 90's? Man that blew my mind/sucked'. Look forward to hearing your experiences on set, although to be honest prior to this piece the concept and details that have seeped through of Year One haven't been overly impressive.

On an unrelated note, I hope Ghostbusters is NEVER remade. Sure the concept is a great one but it's the actors and performers that elevated it to classic status. You just can't recapture that intentionally.

Very interesting. Three Charles Bronson stories for ya....

I've told a couple of these before but I will again just because it's fun and why the fuck not-? Bronson of course lived in this neck of the woods for years, over there in Brownsville VT. And naturally, he gravitated over towards West Lebanon, Hanover and Lebanon NH along w/ the rest of the locals. Here are some of the aggregate stories.

1: K-Mart Bronson: He liked going into K-Mart. I remember seeing him walk across the parking lot, and thinking-hey he's my height. That and 'he's GOTTA be lost-'. One time, he walked into there, a daughter in tow-and kinda barged up to where the electronics were-you know, TV's and shit. Friend of mine was clerking there, and Bronson sorta points at a TV and says he wants it for his daughter. Pulls out a Massive wad of singles, and starts tossing them at her one at a time almost like some guy dealing cards at poker. No joke. I don't think he carried anything larger than a five in that roll from what she told us. Oh and they used to clear open a register for him and let him do his buying w/out the local riffraff hanging around, which was funny because after awhile, no one really gave a shit.

Restaurant Bronson. He liked to give the hired help a hard time, once in a Hanover restaurant (that's basically your run of the mill private version of a Friendly's or whatever)-he's sitting there a table away from some folks, two daughters(or whatever) with him, and he starts to give the waitress a real hard time. "This isn't what I ordered-and they cooked it like shit-" more or less. He liked to see if he could bully folks, he'd respect you if you didn't let him. Apparently the waitress half-jammed the menu in his face, and said 'THIS is EXACTLY what you ordered, Mr Bronson-' and after he actually bothered to read the fine print(in whatever it was he ordered, I donno, I wasn't there-), he abruptly apologized, semi-tipped her and went back to eating whatever it was he'd been pissy about 4 minutes before. What stood out about this, was the guy didn't like alotta attention in public-snarled at people to getthefuckawayfrommedammit! on the street, but in a public restaurant, hardly that pricey-he'd sit and fence/joust w/ the wait help for some long time. It was a scene, and it went on for a while, too. He was hardly trying to hide in plain sight. So-he liked making a scene even if it didn't seem like it, I guess. That's restaurant Bronson.

3: Walker and Cane Bronson. This one's sorta sad. He'd had hip surgery done some 10 years back, and outside the Dartmouth Bookstore, friend of mine was standing there looking at the tables of el-cheapo books they keep there on display. He seemed to notice Something about this old guy standing not far from him at the same table. Bushy haired, stooped, using a cane (or two? I forget...). Well it's hard not to recognize Bunchinsky, even in his late 70's in Hanover. There was the quick-are you-?! and Bronson, nodding said-SHHHHH-don't tell anyone and I'll sign an autograph-which he did, before shuffling off to whatever further business he had elsewheres. I always liked that one, though it's not a pleasent thought, he was clearly nearing the end of his time and aging, like everyone. Bronson w/ a walker? well maybe more like canes. Not exactly Mr. Majestyk.

4: Dirt road Chuck. He was known for acting like Roscoe P Coltrane on some of the local dirt roads near his home, if he wanted to pass you, he kind expected you to recognize him and let him by. At least once he stopped after someone did just that and gave the guy a 20, though WHY it was such a big deal escapes me for the time being. He was odd that way.

5: Ascutney Bronson. You can go see his gravestone right there in the Brownsville VT cemetary at the base of Mt Ascutney. I like to get up there on Brownsville Rock some 3000' feet up over the village(hang-gliders take off there sometimes) and look down at the cemetary, it's weird to think that our Paul Kersey is buried underneath, far far from Hollywood, Lithuania and Scooptown. You never know.

Anyways, I don't think I said much new or shed much light on Chuck, but that's sorta the impression he made around these parts thru the years.

They go from total losers to saving the world from certain "apocalypse by hand of giant marshmallow demigod". How can you top Stay-Puft? You can't, and that's one of the reasons the sequel is less of a movie. I'd love to see some ghostbusting on the big screen again, sadly I don't think it can be done right. A remake will probably have an Escalade or a H2 as the new Ecto-1.
Yer welcome.

He wasn't really well-liked by many, he was prickly w/ his neighbors and there are stories about how when he first was in the area, when he'd head out in public, he had the obligatory bodyguards around to keep people away etc. But that pretty soon got old and was not necessary, as Dartmouth College is right There, you have all kinds of Ivy League types w/ many bigname connections etc passing thru all the time. He prob. recognized this and just relaxed, after a fashion. But I don't think he ever was what you'd call all that approachable or whatever.

Oh and if you've ever wondered, yes J.D. Salinger is alive and well and there are plenty of sightings of him in the area too. I might have a few stories on him if I bother to ask around.

Great article Moriarty. You must love your job. That's awesome. And thank you TomBodet for some great stories. Regarding Ghostbusters: I've never really been all that opposed to remakes and the like. A reimagining can be a good thing. That being said, I think maybe my views are due to the fact that I've never been faced with a remake of a film that was such a big part of my childhood. I hope they never re-make Ghostbusters.

Pixar Incredibles-like movie. I would LOVE to see a 3D animated Ghostbusters. Of course, Pixar would be the right ones to do it because they know that story and comedy come first and foremost, they know how to expertly weave them into a CG movie. And think what they could do with the ghosts in a CG movie. Live action is a definite no no unless it features the original cast. It's probably too late for that now though.

Well thanks Krish-o. I got a kick outta hearing about someone of Bronson's celeb status being in this area, and the effect it had on the locals. And for someone that was SO private etc-there really wasn't much of a place to 'hide' if he bothered heading into Lebanon or Hanover or wherever locally. So people noticed him and if you ask around, you'll get these sorts of stories of the man.

Sorry to hi-jack your thread Amazing G but your post brought back a forgotten memory. When I was a teenager and I'd rent a film from the video store, my mother would always walk in at the most inappropriate moment when I was watching it (not like that you pervs). As soon as there was any flash of boobage, a head being blown off or someone screaming motherfucker, even if it only happend once in the film for like 5 seconds, that was the moment when Mama would walk into the living room. There was many a tut and disapproving glance that day my friend. Apologies for my drivel, please restore this talkback to normal function.

Outstanding article as usual. I've only had the pleasure of meeting a limited number of celebrities but I can completely understand how elating it is to meet someone famous and find that they aren't a complete dick.

The last 'famous' person I met was Chuck Palahniuk. I obviously like his novels and tried to play it cool by saying, "Your work is great man, you really crack me up Chuck". He replied very sarcastically, "Oh thanks a lot (BGDAWES) I bet you just said that so you could work in a way to call me 'Upchuck'. I feel like I'm in the fifth grade again."

At any rate, I completely understand what you mean about how cool it is to meet someone you respect that is also famous and find that they are 'normal' as well.

Ramis and Bill did have a major falling out and no longer speak

I enjoyed the article Drew. Apparently Ramis and Bill Murray did unfortunately have a major falling out and aren't on speaking terms (from what a keen Bill fan mentioned to me once) and if Drew does get to do a proper interview with Mr. Ramis (that'd be longer than 15 minutes) when his new film gets released, it'd be great if he could ask him about this (if Ramis didn't mind discussing it), as it's a shame they can't patch things up. It was over the excellent Groundhog Day film, which they got into many fights over. Bill apparently wanted to explore the GD film's philosophy more, while Ramis felt it needed to be puffy and simple enough for the masses. So what came out, was a poorly made (still very good) romantic comedy that just happened to have one of the most incredible premises of it's decade and also one of the greatest performances by Bill. Bill reckoned (and he was probably right) if he had got more creative freedom on the film, it might have been one of the greatest movies of all time, instead of a merely enjoyable one.

Amazing G can you imagine a 14 year old Pondscum,my brother and both parents all watching Eddie Murphy Raw together on cable. Yes it did happen and despite the foul language and adult content, Eddie was so damn funny that my parents didn't switch over. Speaking of Eddie and Ackroyd, about time they teamed up together again for Trading Places 2.

--thank ya. Thing is, that's how I was told about the K-Mart Bronson encounter, by the wife of someone I've known a quarter century. She waited on him, and it was like that-singles and fives kinda flying onto the counter-top. He was a tightwad? Got me.

I always loved the way Groundhog Day builds up-the varied piano lessons, the insurance sales guy who's an old pal, etc. I think I read where Murray/Ramis finally arrived at the conclusion that 'Murray was stuck there for ten years' or so. Wikipedia? not sure. Anyways I agree that's a good article and interview on the part of Drew. I'm curious about the Albert Brooks encounter(s) myself...

I met Ramis once.

The guy was such a fuckin jerk. I approached him politely and simply asked for an autograph, but he spat in my face and started slapping me around while his bodyguards held me down and pissed all over my shoes. Afterwards, they all laughed at me and called my girlfriend a slut while Ramis molested her and made me watch... Some elements of this story might be fabricated.

With long philosophical debates, ala Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions. If only the Wachowskis could have done Groundhog Day!

Nah, I think Groundhog day ended up pretty good just the way it was.

according to the original script. They decided to make it ambiguous in the movie. That movie probably made more of an impact on me than any other I've seen, despite the obviously tacked-on romantic comedy concessions it makes.

is that it tempers its sentimental whimsy and brings it back down to reality. I absolutely the final moments of that film--"Let's live here!" The music starts and its gooey romantic comedy and then Phil undercuts it with the perfect line: "We'll rent to start." Yes, you were just released from a time-loop prison and suddenly see the joy that can be had in life but come on, don't go crazy...

Sorry that this is entirely off topic but could someone tell me the title of the movie with the "outdoors guitar-player" that plays mostly covers during the day and eventually meets up with the piano-playing girl? It's kinda recent and highpraised. I would appreciate it immensly!!

It's a small Irish film that won the Oscar for best Song this year.

I work on the Sony lot in Culver City and just a few stories: just last week Tommy Lee Jones almost ran me down in a golf cart and then told me to get out of the way for my trouble - Jean Reno inexplicably hates short white guys - Adam Sandler is 42 and still drives a Cadillac golf cart around the lot - Ali Larter inexplicably likes short white guys. Granted, none of my run-ins are quite on the same level per se but it's all I got to barter with...Okay your turn: what the hell happened with Barry Levinson and Albert Brooks?

It was even inducted into the national film vault to be reserved as a historical worthy film. To me GD is the best comedy I have ever seen, and any criticism leveled at it is ill-thought. You cannot top the film, it is virtually flawless.

nah just joking. Harold is somehow respected by even my casual movie going friends. Like I mentioned "the year one" to my friends who I only see a few movies a year with and they asked who's in it. "Jack black, jonah hill, uh harold ramis" "Spengler! we have to see that" I mean teh guy has scores fo fans all ove rthe age spectrum. and bedazzled is a fun and still funny film. I just wish they had included the metal wish for the US cut.

That movie was damned awful and woefully unfunny. What was Mr. Ramis thinking? He should disavow association with the hack comedy writer-director Judd Apatow (who co-wrote the woefully unfunny & uberlame Ben Stiller Show). Groundhod Day is still a cult classic after all these years. Hope Ramis returns for GHOSTBUSTERS 3...maybe zapping ghouls in a wheelchair.

What a career. The quality of his acting, writing, and directing far exceeds any missteps he may have taken. Most people I know don't even realize how much of a hand he's had in some of the greatest American comedy films ever made. Ramis really eclipses the likes of John Hughes and other greats.

then Murray takes himself way too seriously. It seems like he's kind of a bully, and I always thought he was more fucked up than Chevy in that whole debacle. If you ever listen to the Ghostbusters commentary track, you can just tell that Harold Ramis is a decent and funny guy who hasn't gotten to the point where he takes himself as seriously as Murray does. He's one of the few people to have a career like he has had to NOT let it affect them, and Mori's set visit is proof. Remember when Murray looked like he wanted to kill Sean Penn for winning the Oscar over him that year? I'm not a fan of Sean Penn, I think he's the most pretentious fuckface to ever grace the screen and completely incapable of being authentic ala someone like Pacino in Dog Day Afternoon, but I still thought that was a dick move on Murray's part.
Ditto on the Levinson thing...

I'd LUUUURRRRVE TO HEAR that story. And also the one about Albert Brooks. I'm just wondering if it was the circumstance or if they were actually towering dooches, because neither of them deserves more respect than Ramis in my opinion, especailly that cockface Brooks. I love his interviews on the Taxi Driver DVD doc, along with Cybil Shepherd's... they're incapable of understanding what REAL artists like Deniro, Scorsese, and Schraeder were going for.

Muarray jst seems sort of reclusive thats all. I mean he only does stuff he wants to do. Hell he's done shit for webisode guys just because he thought they were funny. One of the college humor guys who went on to do stuff for funny or die got to do a whole sketch where he and some factcheck guy break into muarrays house to verify if he likes some kind of sandwich. I doubt bill is a mean guy just sort of hard to get to. anyways more love to harold keep it up guy.

Yeah, Pete and Brian. I've actually met and hung out with them a few times when they were here in New york, but they moved out to L.A a while ago. They also did a funny entourage spoof that's on youtube, I'm not sure if it's there anymore. They have a great two man show called, aptly, The Pete and Brian how that I've seen and that was really fuckin' funny too. I haven't seen them since the Bill Murray thing, but I'm sure they're doing well.
