Any money taking for a dismantled Johnny Five being found by a group of kids and him making friends. One kid in the group doesn't like him and tips of nasty scientists/Nova/Nazis as to his location. In the third act they make amends, escape the bad guys, one of the bad guys turns good and they all live happily ever after.

You have the facility to share one of your childhood loves with your new nephew/niece now, it's called DVD, perhaps you've heard of it. Seriously, i've been giving me nieces and nephews DVDs of the original Star Wars trilogy, Indiana Jones, Jungle Book, all kinds for years - i was also able to take my nephew to a one-off ET screening in London a couple of years back - otherwise they only see the new shit and will end up thinking DreamWorks Animation make good movies (God forbid!). My nephew had never heard of ET when we saw it he loved it and wanted it on DVD for the following Christmas. Seriously buy your new relation Short Circuit on DVD.

Hell yes DVD/Blu-ray/Digital Downloads is going to be shoved down that kid's throat. It's first disney film is either going to be the 1st Rescuers film or Sword In The Stone but I like the idea of remakes/reimaginings for a new audience. It's a pain to admit but a lot of kids can't properly watch a film over 10 years old because they get hung up on details (why are the clothes funny? why is the hair huge? why is the sky blue etc.) & I doubt I'll ever see the original Short Circuit put up on the big screen in the Birmingham area (an £80 ticket to London for the day is SO not happening)I've never had lil' relations before so i am probably being uber-skeptical of how they relate to film but i loved seeing kids come out of the cinema last summer absolutely jazzed about Transformers & a good 30-40% of parents were probably going to schlep them home & make them watch the original movie afterwards as a treat! Apologies if this comes across as a ramble but I'm trying to reply when I should be rushing to the hospital.

You cannot recapture the spirit of Short Circuit without a white actor in 'brownface' doing a pre-Apu Indian accent. It is a pre-requisite for success!

In other news, am I the only one who would actually kind of like to see a Ghostbusters remake? The original is great, obviously, but it's such a good concept that I'd love to see someone else have a bash at updating it. That Judd Apatow and his mates, maybe. That could be funny.

Get Guttenberg and Sheedy back (they can't be doing much) and do something relevant to today like Number 5 strapping on his laser gun and going to fight the terrorists... actually fuck that idea.
Fisher Stephens was HILARIOUS

I loved Fisher Stephens in that role. For years I actually thought the guy was of real Indian decent. He totally had me fooled. That’s a mark of a talented actor. Since I’m anti-political correctness, I say they should “black up” Fisher again. Hollywood doesn’t seem to have any problems stereotyping obese people, so I say it’s fair game to stereotype all sexes, races and ethnicities.

But War Games cannot be remade and not suck and blow simultaneously. War Games was made in a time where you had to dial into computers, everything was pretty much green letters on black screens, there was no Internet, and so on. Any version of War Games would have to be on the Internet, and it would suck. The only way to re-make Wargames and have it be remotely as good as the original is set it in the 80s . . . and which point, what's the point?

by tomdolan04
Apr 4th, 2008
10:03:59 AM
The whole cast of SC1 and 2 were tongue in cheek, with Stephens' character being the most blatant - but the most humourous. He had some great lines (pants blazing indeed) and having rewatched the first not long back I can appreciate there was a lot of innuendo for the dragged along parents.

In Western culture we now live in an insanely PC culture. Of course they won't do the same character in the remake, bar maybe a token reference. They'll just have to make do with using cheap white stereotypes instead.

I haven't seen Short Circuit since the early 90s. I had no idea that the Indian guy was actually a white guy and the dude from Lost. That is crazy. I need to watch the movie again. I can't believe the studio actually got away with that. I always wondered what happened to that actor since SC2. The only reason this is being made is b/c of Wall.E, but not out of competition. After Wall.E brings in over $300 mil domestice, a live action movie with a similar looking/sounding robot will easily ride its hype to $100 mil, despite its quality.
Fisher Stevens was the best thing in the movie...
by Sledge Hammer
Apr 4th, 2008
11:14:10 AM
...apart from Johnny 5, and everyone loved his character. It was just a comic relief character, no more insulting than any other such comedic character, and a lot more endearing than most, and I don't see how it's any more racist than Apu on The Simpsons (also voiced by a white guy, hello?), or any different than Eddie Murphy in Rick Baker makeup playing a white jewish guy or whatever else. Or even Michael J Fox playing his own daughter (albeit badly) in Back To The Future Part 2. People have taken the whole PC thing way too far these days, and I think real people know the difference between something that's done with good intentions and something that's done in a manner that truly is degrading or insulting.

right now! RIGHT THIS INSTANT. And from here on in for the next 10 years. Lets just re-make every god damn movie from the 80. JUST RELIVE it all over again. I mean everything from The Empire Strikes Back to Mannequin to Fast Times at Ridgemont High to Amadeus. Lets just stop dicking around and admit that VH1 was right. Everyone and there mom love the 80's, so much so that we are just going to relive it. I mean we are about to have another 72 year old president who share a lot of similarites. Lets just do it again.

I KNEW someone would re-do this flick. When Transformers was about a month or two away from being released, and the buzz was huge, I knew all the studios would be clamoring to get their hands on any old 80's pop culture properties and/or anything having to do with robots. And I knew Short Circuit would fall right in the crosshairs of those two concepts. Shit, I should've put money on it!

They will be a continuing factor just as sequels. If they bring back the writers, why not bring back John Badham?? He was the go-to-guy for scripts that fell off Spielberg's desk, then slide off Richard Donner's desk...He's now directing Las Vegas and Psych??? Put the guy back on the big screen.

The original film had the bond form between Stephanie and Johnny- I think today's audiance would have a harder time rebuying into that plot.

What if the woman has a child this time.

a young kid could totally play out that "He's real, He my best friend, I love him, don't hurt him" stuff

Maybe the kid is a loner with no friends- maybe a group of kids pick on him. Maybe the kid honors something his father did. Like maybe he likes to dress up as soldier (Louis from The Boy Who Could Fly)

Now our the hot chick is a hot single Mom. Real question is- Is she divorced or is her Husband dead.

If he died.

Iraq war... His name could have been John, and the 5 could come from something in his rank or the number of medals he was awarded, or something that. This is explains how the robot gets the name Johnny 5.

Basically the robot becomes this kids new father figure of sorts, and it beats up those kids who pick on him.

Can't do that again.

What if a group of terrorist or a foreign government hired thieves stole the robot, and accidentally activated IT when they tried to destroy it's on board Global GPS location device, They triggered it's attack mode. It went ape shit and it caused them to crash there vas into a car the van flips over and hits a telephone pole. Johnny 5 falls out of the back doors into the street and hits the dropped telephone pole line. Doing essentially what the lightening strike did in the original. Now you have the army and some terrorist group and or foreign spy looking for him.

I think it would be great if they remade this film. Instead of obvious robots, it could be humanoid replicas and then one of them gets struck by lightning and rambles around the city and get picked up by a hooker with a heart of gold.
