And this looks exactly like The Spirit comics. Frank didn't create The Spirit, but every bit of Sin City and 300 was his work other than Snyder's addition of the spartan queen's little side story, so please take a look and you'll understand why Miller deserves the credit for those films.

Ok, maybe I can give him some credit for the look of 300, but honestly, have you seen any of the Sin City comics?? Yeah, the stories and the characters may be Frank's, but taken alone, the comics just wouldn't stand up to scrutiny if they hadn't been made into movies

That's a fair point mate.--For me, it looks exactly like the comic, but to actually make it look like the comic and be watchable is a task I wouldn't put on anyone. The Spirit is a strange property, and probably wouldn't see the light of day on a screen without Miller involved. He's esoteric and sort of like Ulysses and James Joyce. Most comic fans know of the guy, and can tell you about him, but have never actually read much of the comic.

On Sin City's popularity...
by -=Shin=-
Apr 4th, 2008
05:45:17 AM
Among us comic fans, Sin City was hugely popular. We all had copies. I pretty much by anything Miller puts out, I even have 'The Pro' looking at me from across my room. ...And that terrible Spawn/Batman crossover that Miller did with McFarlane back in the day. I've got to respectfully disagree with you though Gwai Lo. I couldn't force people to check out Sin City, unless they were art students, before the movie came out. And some of the folks I tried to get to check it out run art galleries in NYC and London. Once the movie came out, they all bought copies of the trades and act like they've always had them. And, frankly, I'm pissed of at that fact.

I guess you're right. Me, I remember my halcyon days as a young lad browsing through my older brother's comic collection and finding lots of titties in the Sin City books. Instant Frank Miller fan for life. But I still take issue with Sarsy's original comment that the books don't stand up in print form. The books are great pieces of noir pulp that would still be fantastic had Rodriguez never decided to take a break from making silly movies for the chilluns. Again I can't really be bothered to explain any further than that because I've been drinking some sort of bizarre apricot beer for the last eight hours and now I'm thoroughly soused. And now I'm going to bed. Goodnight, true believers.

The Pro was Garth Ennis, not Frank Miller. Outside of that though I largely agree with you, Sin City was huge for Dark Horse back in the day, and was one of the most popular 'non superhero' series of comics of the 90's. Anyone who was into comics at the time had at least heard of Sin City unless they were living under a rock, and anyone who read comics beyond just the standard superhero fare likely read at least one Sin City yarn.

I never was a big Spirit fan, although I did enjoy Eisner's artwork. I hope this flick turns out better than the pics look. Right now it resembles the Batman TV show or at least Shumacher's, version with the "Adios" henchmen and neon colors. Maybe if they change it to that same kind of stylized black & white with limited color look similar to Sin City. It could then have that gritty '40s-'50's detective "Naked City" look.
Shin, what Spirit comics are you reading?
by stones_throw
Apr 4th, 2008
07:15:36 AM
It's always been a convention in the comics never to show the face of the Spirit's nemesis, the Octopus. Here, Sam Jackson's on display in full-on pimp mode. In the comics, the Spirit wears a blue suit and hat and a white shirt, not the Green Day circa-American Idiot-style get-up above. From Will Eisner to Darwyn Cooke, the Spirit's mostly been a pretty whimsical, light-hearted character (with some darker edges), and his adventures usually reflect that. What's the betting Frank Miller goes for more SIN CITY hyper-noir? It could be great, but it's definitely looking like it's own thing.

Really. How hard wouuld it have been to stick with the blue hat, suit and mask? It could even have been a dark blue to stick with Miller's heavy contrasts. Changing the X-Men's circus-like appearance to black uniforms for film ... I kind of understand. But this? There's no reason to make him all black. It's just such an obvious choice for an update. "Hey, let's do the Spirit ... but make him all black! Cool!" What's next? A horrible all-black costume for Green Lantern? What am I saying? "Green" Lantern? They'll make it Black Lantern with a cool black-light power ring that will be used to find jiz stains at a crime scene or some such nonsense. (Sorry, I'm not sure if that's the proper way to spell "jiz". Please do forgive me.)

The Spirt , if true to the comics, would be a high spirited, tongue in cheek adventure, fist fights, chases, sexy dames, with darkness at the edge. Now..Miller is a talentless hack, this is fact - his Sin City comics were laughably bad attempts at writing noir, something a 12 year old might churn out, and the movie was horrid. Now you can bet your ass he's all grim & gritty here too...fuckin hack could not even get the Spirit's suit right.

I've loved Eisner's character since I was a kid (it was essentially my introduction to "adult" comics), but I'm worried about translating this material to film. I'm not crazy about these costumes, and despite her beauty, Eva Mendes has sucked the life out of every movie she has ever been in. Unfortunately, I see this being about as popular as "The Shadow," "The Phantom" and "The Rocketeer." Old-timey comic films are a tough sell.

The Spirit has always been, canonically, wearing black. The blue was a result of the inability to print the strip with him wearing black in a way that didn't look shit, but though it looks blue on the page, it's meant to be black in the story.

...because I am a culturally illiterate cretin. Just because a twenty-year-old Blockbuster employee hasn't heard of The Spirit doesn't mean it isn't a big deal. Eisner invented the grammar of an entire medium. The last guy to do that was - what? Welles? DW Griffith? Obviously this has no bearing on whether or not the movie will be good, but I think if anything's going to shift Miller out of creative autopilot, it's this.

I respect your knowledge on the character, and I'm not questioning your facts ... BUT - to say that "canonically" The Spirit is wearing black is a bit inaccurate. That's like saying The HULK is "canonically" gray. I'm aware of printing capabilities of bygone eras. In my opinion, The Spirit's blue costume, regardless of what it was originally meant to be, is one of those "happy mistakes". Sorry, raw_bean, but The Spirit wears blue. Surely today's printing standards have changed. If what you say is true, why hasn't someone who TRULY loves the character, and is aware of his history (Darwyn Cooke) done a book featuring an all-black costume? I'm not questioning your facts, just your use of the word "canonical".
