Don't get me wrong, this sounds mightily more impressive than the first Narnia outing & child actors will alway naturally have a limited range but my brain says a few of the adult themes & a lot of the gorier shots (cgi mice slashing throats) will probably be saved for an extended DVD version & not for the theatrical version where parents must be appeased. Will definitely keep my eye on it.

Competition amongst Chinese takeaways is fierce. Around the corner from me there are three of the buggers all vying for my takeaway money, and they all try to out-do each other with their portion sizes. For a quid, I always get enough chips to feed a football team. Health-conscious guy that I am, most of them end up in the bin, which induces terrible pangs of waste-related guilt. If only I could donate them to some kind of chip-recycling scheme.

On topic, I am glad to see Warwick Davis is appearing in this one. If you're hiring little people, it is some kind of unwritten law that you must hire the pre-eminent little actor of his generation.

That looks like it could be a funny one. I imagine some producer type pitching it as Fight Club meets The Fast And The Furious, which suggests great potential to me. If they could combine the dark satire of Fight Club with the colourful retardedness of Torque and whatnot, they might well have a film I would like to see.

Narniaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! and a Chinese girl...

My girl is Chinese and it's generally pretty difficult finding films that will hold her interest as there's fundamental differences with the storytelling conventions here in China(or so I'm told??Something to do with Chinese stories being written in a less linear way than Western tales.??)Anyway,I originally tried Jaws.Classic.Sadly it ended with the girl screaming and rolling up in a fetal position demanding the film "go away!"(and that was before the fucking head in the boat bit!)Next I tried Alien.Classic.I got her to watch it all the way through but she still has nightmares about John Hurt's noodle reaction. So it got to the point where I tried childrens classics. The Jungle Book.Home run,she loved it.The Wizard of Oz.Nearly a home run,but she began screaming when the flying monkeys attacked in the forest.So.....I bought Narnia for her on dvd.I fucking hated this movie with a fucking passion.Ghastly direction, utterly devoid of style, absolutely derivative. And fucking Qui-Gon doing his mentor shtick yet a-fucking-gain.But I digress,I thought the girl would like it.Her reaction?"This is boring." "This is stupid!Rubbish film" and my personal favourite "The little girl looks like a pig." I love my girl.Fuck Narnia.

I'm not surprised you think Skandar Keyenes is the best of the 5 main leads. Ben Barnes is a bit of a lightweight and the other child actors were no where near as good as Skandar in the first film. Edmund and his scenes with the White Witch were the highlight of the first film. I never understood why the kid playign Lucy got all the attenton in film 1. I also dont get why Edmudn is getting no PR in film 2. All the other kids are getting air time and we've had Ben Barnes shoved down our throats. Keynes has far more screen presence than the others so the logic beats me.

it had its faults, most of which Quint has already addressed but it was still enjoyable. So this one is likely to be getting my dosh too. By the way Critch I would imagine that those that are speaking highly of tate's new take on Donna are doing so because their expectations were so low that all she had to do was remember her lines and they'd be impressed. I however have no so such problem to worry about. I have to worry about the fact that the singlemost untalented, worthless, unfunny, headache inducing, teeth grindingly awful person in British entertainment (and I'm including Jeremy Kyle and Trish in that list) is playing the Doctors new assistant. Tate could bring us the single greatest performance in media since Pacino in Godfather 1 and 2 but it wouldn't matter to me and countless others because WE CANT FUCKING STAND CATHERINE TATE!!!!! AICN's delusions of grandeur

11:10:57 AM
That's the problem with AICN staff when they make set visits - they present themselves to us as important collaborators with the film-makers, when in reality they are contributors to an internet fansite who are invited on set for promotional purposes. To Quint's credit, he hasn't tried to exaggerate his importance in this write up, which is why it is so refreshing to read. Also - and this is important - it's clear that Quint isn't necessarily shilling for this movie (remember Harry' The Dark Is Rising set visit and delusional puff-piece? Still no explanation or apology from AICN for that slice of hypocrisy). Now, if AICN writers can start to leave their personal lives, meals, train journeys etc out of their write-ups, things will be perfect.

True dish, I did. Esp. your meal in London (do I envy you; I've always wanted to visit London) and your problems with O'Hare (I've heard nothing but horror stories from friends condemned to use that damned place so I sympathize, although thankfully I've never had to use it - I travel primarily Amtrak (trains rock out loud). As a major Narnia fan, and a fan of the first film (with reservations; certain moments, such as Aslan's resurrection, weren't handled all that well IMO - very anticlimactic to my way of thinking) I'm looking forward to "Caspian". From what you've told us, it does indeed depart from the book, but in a good way. My main worry was how the film would handle Reepicheep, a martial mouse who adheres rigidly to ideals of chivalry and gallantry, and who, in the books, could easily kick Puss In Boot's fuzzy butt, but your statement about Izzard eases my mind somewhat. Overall a great report, thanks.

11:57:58 AM
So suck it up, fanboys. I get sick of retarded comparisons between the Narnia and LOTR books. It's a fact that Lewis encouraged Tolkein to finish LOTR when J.R.R. was sick of the whole thing - Tolkein in fact himself credited Lewis for helping him complete the series. As for Narnia, it's the type of bright, dazzling, truly enchanting fantasy world you don't read in more modern fantasy novels, which have all gone dark, grimy and gothic. In other words, they're dreary bores (and I include those crappy Potter books in that estimation - Rowling's world is heavily derivative, stupefyingly ugly, and full of unimaginative gimmicks (talking pictures, oh WOW, however did she think of that?) and the woman can't write comedy or a single sentence with any real magic in it. All the dips here dumping on Narnia ought to actually read the books and try to overcome their loathing of all things noble and heroic. Not everything has to be cynical and dark to be intelligent and creative.

With the exception of Aslan and the scenes between the boy and the white witch. I'm excited to see me some dwarf and Reepicheep killing. Then again, I'm betting this will be edited down a lot before release, which is a shame. I'm sure a child's imagination could be just as visceral as the one created and I don't really think Disney needs to dumb it down for a new generation. Those child actors are really not doing anything for me, especially not the heavily marketed title character, who seems to have gotten the part on looks alone.
C.S. Lewis and LOTR
by critch
Apr 3rd, 2008
12:54:57 PM
Just because he supported LOTR doesn't make Lewis a great writer, nor does it make Narnia some kind of legendary adventure. LOTR the books I found got too bogged down in the universe itself, almost becoming bible-like in the prose, to the point that it was almost a chore to get to the end of the ring, which is handled almost as an afterthought in about two easily-missed lines. Then another hundred or two pages about the shire...just tedious. The movies tightened everything up and were done with spirit and love for the material, something that Narnia had neither. It's everything you would expect a disney-fied LOTR to be, with a heaping helping of religous stupidity slapped on top. This one does sound better, but considering I even liked "In the name of the King" better than the first Narnia, that's not a leap.

It is so nice to meet a fellow spirit concerning LOTR. What the fuck was up with those hundred pages about going back to the Shire? The ring's gone, they have a king, it's over. I hated that soooo much. And what was up with all the hobbits spending an entire chapter at some dude's farm in the first book singing and bathing and eating mushrooms? Keeping in mind, this immediately follows the beginning of their journey with the ring. Throughout there is so much preaching and history lessons concerning Tolkien's universe that any sense of urgency or tension is lost. While I love the books dearly and find them synonymous with my childhood, the movies have them beat, if only by a hair and due to lack of post-adventure Shire bullshit.

if tolkien hadn't gone back and done the scouring of the shire, people like you would have been whining about all the loose threads in the story. it brings the hobbits full circle, and they realize how much they have grown and changed since they set out on the journey. plus, it adds a final denouement for sauruman and wormtongue. jesus, does EVERYTHING need to be spelled out for you people?

It was boring to say the least. I felt the movie was rushed to cash in on the whole LOTR mantra that had recently come to pass.

Much like the Harry Potter movies to be exact. I've never really cared for those either. They always felt slopped together to make a quick buck with no real emotional energy that made me care about what was happening on the screen.

Sadly based on what I just read it seems that this movie to follows that same dire path of non emotional attachment because of the stale bland acting from the kids. Maybe in time they will have more of a gel that will provide a better cohesive basis for a more rounded picture but after reading this I already know I am going to pass on this one at the theater. It will get a rental though just like the Potter flicks.

Here's a thought. Why didn't Tolkien just have the heroes take care of Saruman and all his bullshit at an earlier time, rather than realizing "Oh shit, what about that sorceror from the first two books? Better tie that up! Oh wait I already ended it. Well I guess I can plop him in where all the hobbits go back." The story was over man! The entire goal of the fellowship was to throw that damn ring in that damn Mount of Fuckin Doom. All I'm saying is, placing Saruman's end at an earlier point in the story would have improved its pacing a great deal. I know it's mainly about the hobbits, little people placed in an event much bigger than themselves, but that Shire shit at the end is weak. Just let the hobbits walk back and let Frodo walk his book. Give those damn hobbits a break. Imagine if Beowulf had killed the dragon, but the movie didn't end and he ended up having to fight a group of bandits that were looting some crap while he was off dragonslaying. Sound lame? Because it is. Why would we need to see Beowulf fight some bandits when we already know he is capable of slaying a BIG FUCKIG DRAGON? I'm not saying I could do it better than Tolkien. The man was a master of fantasy. That ending just bugs me and feels superfluous.

Thank you for that explanation. It actually makes sense in a way and it helps me to appreciate the ending more. Still, I feel it hurt the pacing of the ending a bit and made the entire quest to dispose of the ring seem like it wasn't as important as I was led to believe it was through most of the tale. As a parallel to WWII it works and makes perfect sense, but as a general story it's awkward.

I bet it's still possible to get a much better edit out of The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe. But it matters not for now. Caspian will be a better film, although it's (IMO) the weakest Narnia book. They've added material like the castle siege and the kids actually having SOME character moments, which they rarely do in the books. Peter becoming an arrogant asshole is a good addition. They'll use this as a basic reason for why he can't return to Narnia following this adventure. With Susan they'll probably say she can't return because she's turning into a slut teen (you just know they WILL play the Caspian/Susan love thing)

If you are ever talking to Andrew Adamson again Quint, could you ask him if he ever thought they'd ever re-release the dvd of Lion, Witch & The Wardrobe one day, with some improved and darker effects (ie showing some creatures actually dieing in the battle, a little blood etc) and perhaps touch up the cgi here and there. Making that film look maybe aimed at 5yrs older in terms of viewership would make a lot of money. Many of us "liked" the film, but would've loved some kind of edge to it. The film did very well at the box-office and was a more than solid dvd release, if those things happened and it was released on Blu Ray, it'd do even better than the current dvd. Jackson made a packet out of his extended editions. Adamsons film would do well for the studio with a slightly more than grown up feel.

I don't really see the point of reports like this, i don't care how good it is written, a film is meant to be watched, don't get it. And this talkback is probably one of the most full of dumbass comments I've ever heard. The Narnia haters seem to talk as if the first film was a failure, check the box office stats. Adamson is a still fairly new to this, starting in animation, I think he's done a brilliant job, I loved the first film, and from the tv spots I've seen recently Adamson seems to be advancing quickly. As for those saying Lewis was a bad writer, you can't forget these stories are directed toward children, as an apologetic writer and philosopher Lewis is a geniuus. His fiction writing not on the level of Tolkien, but he was more of a philosopher. What influenced both of their writing is medieval philosophy, the synthesis of reason and faith.

If you can't figure out the plot for movie for 'dumb litle kids', there's no hope. I think Harry Potter is a movie more accurate to the dumb little kids description, or rather dumb adults who are still adolescents, kids are much wiser...the plot's not ver complicated, but there is a lot of complex philosophical layers where Lewis makes apologetic argument in favor of Christian philosophy, the reality of the miraculous, and the truth contained in myth...what's important is that the filmmaker make the plot work visually, and I thought that was accomplished. Unlike PJ with LOTR, Adamson challenge is addition to the plot because Lewis did not make it complicated. Here's a good tv spot from the Disney channel, aimed probably more toward the Disney channel audience to help you understand gotham:

I always wonder when people are asked by the big studios whether it's possible to keep a subjective view on things. I really like your report but I do feel that it's quite easy to like something when presented to you by the creators and their main aim is to make you feel comfortable and special. I don't want to sound condesending but I have been to screenings where the director and actors were present and come across as really nice people. You almost end up liking the project more even though it may be terrible. Adamsons first outing with Narnia was just pure aweful so I really hope you're right and they've done a better job this time.

Same problem here mate. I find older films are a winner. For example try Hitchcock. Rear Window, North By Northwest etc. Anything Cary Grant too is generally a winner. Try and get her into particular actors.

I've moved my lady on to thrillers... things like Fatal Attraction go down well.... stepped it up film by film... until I semi-forced HALLOWEEN on her... (the original of course). Get this, she VOLUNTARILY sat through the entire Halloween series and loves them.

Interested to know where in the country you are...

I'm in Wuxi,Jiangsu which is okay. And I may add that you are absolutely right....old films,Cary Grant and bloody Audrey Hepburn...oh and goddamn Titanic seem guarenteed choices. It has sadly got to the point now where My Girl now questions why all western films are scary and/or about monsters/killing so I changed our viewing habits.Sadly,I may be going through a "China week" at the moment as Im rather impatient with this country/people.The more foreigners that come here the worse it gets.I'm consistantly fending off people trying to rip me off.The inherent racism is seemingly becoming more prevalent too.The 'old ways' are rising again. For example,a guy who tops up my phone for me yesterday said he was not looking forward to the Olympics as it would bring more blacks to China.Aghast I said "Er,why do't you like them?" His reply was that their skin stinks. At this point......well,words can't express the disappointment. This is a backward and uneducated country at many times, and my constant utterunce of "It's not their fault" is growing tired.Happily my experience is generally rounded out by genuinely lovely people who make it worth while staying here. This country has taught me one thing...Canadians are very strange. And even though the Chinese loathe the Japanese,Hello Kitty(a Jap import) is adored.Double standard is what CHina is all about.Trust me,I'm a teacher who works for a fucking company that employs good looking morons who wouldn't get a job back home working in a chippy.I'm still there because I'm an idiot.....Bad day all round really.Red Mist still all encompasing....need a beer..

-LOSE THE AIRPORT HASSLE SHITE. Sirrah-no one cares. No offense, no one needs to hear how you Got there. Just-cut to the chase, okay?

I liked the first Narnia fine for what it was and see no reason to differ on this one, either.

Anyone notice how strange looking she is?The wallpapers available at the official site freak me out. It's like she's related to that friendly shapeshifting green alien character from The Fantastic Four.I swear to God,I can almost smell her.I've seen better looking birds serving in Leicestershire chip shops!!Fucking hell. What is wrong with her?Is she deformed or something?God can be so cruel. To make someone so incredibly ugly and devoid of any talent AND give her the whiniest most annoying voice ever heard is just plain cruel.God,the smell.Like 10 year old fish batter.Get her face away from me.The stench.Oh,Christ....AND God made her a ginger. The Tardis hasn't stunk so bad since Bonnie Langford followed through.

They let it get too obsessed with teen pregnancies and drugs.THey should have kept what made it magic in the first place:it's realism!!English schools are all about bullying fat kids, racist bullies and bird's first periods! No english person in their thirties will ever forget the appalling acting of Roland Browning's stalker/friend "Why weren't you at school RO-LAND?",who could forget the magic of that lad drowning in the deep end of the swimming pool,Roland Browning's chip diet,Gripper Stebson's quiff and terrifyingly evil faced bullyboys,Bennie's footie skills and Alan's lovable but useless fatty?I demand a reboot.God,what a week.I feel like punching a German.I'm going for a pint.Fuck Narnia.

Yes friend, it's a frustrating country. Especially recently with all of the blind patriotism, and refusing to believe anything other than the crap they are told. How does your lady take it when you try to explain the world to her? I always refer to anything outside China as 'the real world'. Ha, my God, the hours we must have spent arguing. HOURS AND HOURS AND HOURS.

Back to old films... try to weeeen her off the happy-happy films, by showing her an old film... thats a little thrilling. Then just progress to a slightly less old flim thats a little scary. Then just keep stepping it up, until she's watching The Exorcist! I have to say, I've done quite well and am proud of my achievements.

She still drives me fucking ape-shit when she starts telling me 'how do I know these things' (in reference to the truth about why China is such a shit-hole sometimes. Tibet, etc.).

I'm in Guangdong by the way. Don't let it get to you. Rise above it. Thats what I tell myself...

"it's not their fault... it's the Governments!"... ha ha ha ha... yes...I suppose its true.... but when you see an entire nation of people who are seemingly not even making an effort to learn, understand, or question things, and who are so blindly in love with the idea of China, that little sentence really does wear thin.

Oh I secretly pray the Olympics will be a colossal failure. Maybe then the people will question why it was.

to answer your question, i don't know. i don't know why tolkien took care of saurman in that way, but it does tie all the stuff that was hinted at in the shire before they left back to a cause at the end. as for the rest, i have to say that i fucking LOVE the ending in the shire. i love that we get to see what happens to not only sam and frodo, but also merry and pippin. it shows that yes, they had these life-changing experiences, but they are each a part in the longer tapestry of hobbit history. the scope is just awesome. i know it's not for everyone, but i have always loved the scouring.

The story isn't focused on the journey, it's focused on Frodo, hence the shire ending. It makes perfect sense. The story ends with his sailing off to the Grey Havens and Sam writing about Frodo's life because it was always Frodo's story. At least that's what I got out of the books.

Makes sense. If Rings is indeed the story of Frodo, then thats all very well. But, if the story is Sam's, as some believe, then surely it ought to have continued long after Frodo leaves for the Havens. How Sam continues his own story, without Frodo.

aye,agreed.Totally.Dwelling too much on how to bring them out of the dreadful child-like state is worthless.I have challenged many things here...a direct example was the usual dreadful example for teachers 'what would you do if you had a time machine' (2nd conditional stuff) and I was followed into the staff room by guys who wanted an argument."I am an engineer!!Why would I need a time machine!?THis is for children!" my answer?"Good use of 2nd conditional" ..By the way..I know I can't type...In my day we did it with pencils and pens!!!And the DOctor's companions were fit like Teegan....

a good friend fancied a Chinese gal for ages. She dated a MONSTER.Typical kind of old brit refugee who had found no place for his POV at home so had tried Asia and dated her for a while before getting rid of her because she was fat(she wasnt he just anted pre teen ass.fucking filth)Anyway....my mate eventeually ended up in bed with her(she was years older and still fairly lovely(but nuts))and mid sex she asked "Do you want to put it in my bottom?" He didn't and left.I hate what some of us 'fairly nice' people have to answer for here.I'm certainly hapy to announce that most of Canadians here are insane.

in my day the doctors companions held a boom-box on their shoulder, and pinned hundreds of badges to their jacket...I'm not sure if we've got forward of backwards since then. Always had a thing for Jo Grant though. Is that weird?

The problem with China is... its full of Chinese. And likewise, the problem with America is.. its full of Americans.

not sure that 'putting it in her bottom' is all that bad though mate.... where's the harm in that?

Wow. Today at AICN I learned about airport delays, the upcoming Prince Caspian movie, English cuisine, Chinese culture, and doing Chinese girls in the @ss. I already knew about O'Hare from personal experience so that doesn't count (although repetition is the key to learning). And the Final Four starts in a few hours!! This is the best day EVER!!

a) Why would have breakfast at a Pub? That's just nasty. b) What's wrong with Catherine Tate? Not only is it refreshingly original for a ficitonal action series to have a female lead who is comical, but also one who looks like a real every day woman instead of a hot model.
