It seems like they've got too much dead weight on the creative team or something. Lazy writing, for one thing. The AIDS episode for example could have been a classic, but instead it was thoroughly mediocre.

Exactly. The AIDS episode. Were Cartman finally gets his just deserts and Kyle has a field day was just...could have been a classic. I really didnt laugh all that much. Yet at the beggining I was expecting something far greater. The set up for a revenge on Cartman episode was long over due but it didnt really do it for me. Its the only show on tv that can really make me laugh so I will never dog on it. But never the less, something was off. I feel like they lost their chance with that episode.

I felt that it was not nearly as tight as it could have been. Like Frodo said, it was a missed opportunity. There were so many little things they could have done to make it really work too. One thing I kept thinking was that the "Are you HIV positive?" line would have been so much funnier if they'd been just a bit subtler with it and and only said "Are you positive?".

South Park has been the most consistently funny and ground breaking comedy show for the last ten years. I grew up with it and I hold it to the same high esteem that many people hold the Simpsons. It's only because I love it so much and have such immense respect for the creators that I feel I know when it's not up to it's own standards. I'll never dismiss South Park as having "Jumped the Shark" or some stupid shit like that just because I haven't enjoyed the latest season as much as I did the last. I'm not going to stop watching any time soon, I don't want more fucking poop jokes, I just want to see the guys get back on the ball because I know exactly how good they can be and we only get seven episodes at a clip.

Please, dude. Cartman injecting AIDS infected blood into Kyle's mouth while he was sleeping was classic fucking South Park. Did that need to be more subtle? Fuck no. But some of the jokes could have been much funnier if the writers had just put a little more thought into their execution. The episode fell apart in the second half, in my opinion. And fuck you if you think people don't have the right to occasionally criticize something they love.

We know what Trey and Matt can do. The AIDS episode missed alot of funny. Some scenes like Cartmans mom crying at the hospital lasted like 2 or 3 seconds too long. She didnt want him when he was a Ginger. But now that he has AIDS shes supportive? Thats funny. Hey dont get me wrong. Cartoons are not suppose to be consistant. Especially this one. Some scenes just driffted. Of all the shows on that week. I still would watch that again. Cause its the characters I love in a new situation. Which is why Iam one of the few that love sequals. But it was so dry that is almost seemed intentional what they were doing. And that was the season opener? Almost as weird as the season closer of that Hockey Episode with the kid with cancer.

At least it had a point. Rich people don't die from AIDS anymore. They didn't necessarily put out a specific conspiracy theory on it, they just put it out there. It's a crudely drawn cartoon about children swearing that actually had something provocative to say. Whether or not it had the number of belly laughs you wanted is immaterial.

by Red Giant
Apr 2nd, 2008
01:45:35 PM
C'mon, if you are old enough to remember the Heavy Metal cartoon/movie and its awesome soundtrack, you must have loved this one. The boob extremism was perfect, and all the little subtle bloody bits was exactly tongue-in-cheek paying homage to the old classic movie. Rent it if you haven't seen it, then maybe you'll "get" this EP more. Of course, if you are young, stupid and listen to that crap they call music nowadays, maybe you didn't get it. Understandable and you have my sympathies. At least I can keep dreaming that Led Zeppelin will play again and I can somehow get tickets to see the greatest band there ever was.

and I still loved last week's episode. Even if I hadn't known what it was spoofing the extreme nature of it would have worked for the high visions. And the rest of it was funny as hell, The cheesing newscast and tips on how to spot it. Gerald's set-up with the projector. Cartman hiding the cats. The hideous animation of Kenny when high. And "The call it cheesing because it's FON to DUE" - I wouldn't have cared if the whole episode had been built around that pun, it would have been worth it.

The other two this season - I wasn't keen on the first one at all. Like poeple have said it started out with great potential but then just didn't work. Cartman injecting the AIDs was just too far nasty (even or someone who fed a kid their own parents - Scott Tennorman deserved that)and it was hard to find anything funny after that considering how much we sympathised with Kyle. The Britney one was good and quite clever once the plot was unveiled but I don't think it will be one to rewatch over and over. And Zoink, if you need to judge my South Park tastes, I loved pretty much all of last season but the last classic, all-out awesome South Park episode I saw was the one where Ike was sleeping with his teacher. Pretty much every line spoken in it was hilarious. Nice. Niiiiice. Niccccccce.

Oh, ok. You got me. You turned me around on this! It's unreasonable of me to expect South Park to be a tightly written and constructed comedy show as well as contain some social commentary... Please. South Park has always been South Park because it manages to be an incredibly well written and plotted show 85% of the time regardless of whatever point they're trying to make with any given episode. I can watch and rewatch almost any episode time and time again and still find something to laugh at. They've managed to actually get better year after year. But that's not so with the most recent episodes. It's lazy writing and it's below them. But I'm confident it'll get better again in the long run, just as long as Matt and Trey can manage to stay interested in producing the same level of quality that the fans loved them for in the first place.

Is probably the funniest show on television, barring The Office. It isn't what it was in its prime, but its still funny to watch. The AIDS episode was good, the Britney episode was mediocre, but the Heavy Metal episode was pure hilarity. I agree with the tber upwards who said he'll never stop watching. Even when its got bad episodes, the next one can often restore your confidence in them. I feel like they've strayed a bit, especially last season, from what they do best which is mixing socio-political satire with genre parody, and I think they've strayed from that since the Cartoon Wars episodes, in which they sort of bash themselves by saying sometimes a show gets its head up its own ass with serious commentary.

Loved it. As much as I wanted to say that Butters doing what what was stupid and maybe played out, it wasn't. It just made me laugh. Also, I find that if you watch the Britney one again -- going into it knowing she's gonna blow her head off -- it plays a lot funnier. Discuss. Or not.

And alot of funny flapping Canadian heads, aboots, and internet guys killing each other. And, I'm Canadian, and I love the Canada episodes, bud-ay! Nobody I know takes it personally, we actually dig 'em, from the movie onwards. We should get one aboot every year, guy, instead of the every 2 or 3 years we have now. But, where was I, oh, yeah, fuck the writer's strike.
Kyle's speech:
by TallBoy66
Apr 3rd, 2008
04:58:14 AM
"But, you know, I learned something today: We thought we could make money on the Internet, but while the Internet is new and exciting for creative people, it hasn't matured as a distribution mechanism to the extent that one should trade real and immediate opportunities for income for the promise of future online revenue. It will be a few years before digital distribution of media on the Internet can be monetized to the extend that it necessitates content producers to forgo their fair value and more traditional media." “Yeah.” Translation: writers shouldn't have had a struck over the Internet because nobody can make MON-EH off it, yet. Hence, all the "theoretical dollars" and stupid Internet guys and the striking Canadians getting nothing for all thier trouble, bud-dey.

I'm still really surprised at how many people on here think it is just great for corporations to make more money off of programming without having to pay for it.

I'm really amazed that the South Park guys had the guts to do this episode though. Good luck getting any big name writers to work with them in the future but then again the South Park guys probably don't care if the writers hate them.

They seemed to have more of a problem with the way the strike ended, than the strike itself. In retrospective, this interpretation seems pretty spot on. Networks didn't get crippled. Hollywood only gave two shits because of the Oscar gala. They didn't accomplish a thing, and then treated it like they've won. This is all that happened in SP last night.

I've watched it on southparkstudios.com, where it was riddled with ads. From what I heard, that money goes directly to Matt and Trey. So, they can make money off the Internet after all.

was to get internet money before it becomes the big source of income in the way they failed to get DVD money until way after DVD had peaked. They actually prevented themselves from getting royaly screwed again, so I would say it was to some extent a victory. From there, the South Park guys sign a deal to make a shit load of money, much of it do to internet. From there, Comedy Central runs a Lewis Black about YouTube vs Porn. So there goes the whole "can't make money on the internet yet" argument. I'm not much of a fan of the "I've seen that before" humor that was the youtube fight, but I did get some joy out of the Butters video, so it wasn't a total waste. Human Giant season 2, continues to be funnier this season and continues to be totally ignored by Herc. I guess Human Giant doesn't know how to send out press releases so Herc can post them without including any real content of his/her own.
This season has been fantastic...

You guys are just expecting and wanting something different. The first episode not only works in terms of its concept, but the tone of it in the beginning is wonderful. Calling the episode something playful and alliterated like "Tonsil Troubles" and all the "You did say it was FREE ice cream? Ha ha.", and the music, makes the entire episode better in terms of doing a completely ridiculous episode with such a mild tone at he start. Could it be better? Probably, but most things can. The Britney Spears episode may have not been a laugh a minute, but that doesn't mean it wasn't good. It actually had something to say, and made an incredibly good point, and illustrated it in such an absurdist fashion. This episode as well worked on the same scope, and my only problem with it was the "buddy/pal/friend" joke was done too often. The Heavy Metal one was my least favorite (which many of you have said you enjoyed the most) because it was pretty much just lazily piggybacking on Heavy Metal, as opposed to offering something new. I don't care if this may not be the "Funniest" season so far, but it's certainly up there as one of the most intelligent, and proving what a good satire South Park is, as opposed to just random shit going on for the sake of random shit going on. I will not be surprised at all if this week's episode is nominated/wins an Emmy.

You didn't know that people that buy tabloids are condoning and funding the behavior of the tabloids? What point was made in that episode that would be a revelation to anyone with a 4th grade education?

episode wasn't obvious, but with all the celebrity hype, etc. that happens, we've gotten to the point where we just accept it as normal now. Sometimes it's necessary to just present something in a different manner to get people thinking about how the fuck is actually happening. Like how Jolie/Pitt can sell a picture of their child for 50 million dollars, and it's just treated as natural. Perhaps the message iself wasn't so much significant, but rather the questioning of it.

See Tina Fey's opening monologue when she hosted SNL post-strike for the same idea. "We successfully negoiated a 3 cent per dollar revenue after one year of full streaming, yada, yada , etc." I don't think anyone thinks that NO one is making money off the internet, except those posting their material to You Tube, etc. Now Tay Zonday may get a commercial deal and his 15 minutes of fame that he could translate to something else, but of course it's the site founders and corporations that are making the money off the nets in advertising revenue.

"Isn't their dollar worth more than the US dollar at this point?" Not only that, they have all the natural resources that the US needs but will soon no longer be able to afford due to the idiotic leadership of the last seven years. Canada will be a much better place to live in the 21st century than the US, 'm'afraid. Space, resources, energy, and (perhaps most importantly) an endless supply of clean water.
