I had just about given up on this (since the last time Giacchino had mentioned it was January). I didn't love Cloverfield, but that song was worth the whole trip. Thanks for the heads-up, Scorekeeper! This news made my day.

My roommate and I, both composers, stayed after the movie (which he thought was great, but I didn't really like) because someone on here said that the music was this mind-blowing piece of film score brilliance that absolutely had to be heard. We stayed for about thirty seconds of the music, heard the ridiculous female choir vocals come in, got up and left. Maybe it gets better, but the part I heard was generic and shitty.

The first rule of writing a good song is to make the song immediately grab your attention and make the listener want to hear the piece in its entirety. If the first minute of a song is God awful, why on earth would I want to sit through another twelve minutes of it? I mean, do you need to listen to an entire Celine Dion song to know that it sucks or can you figure it out within the first 30 seconds?

Cloverfield kicked ass. Loved it, will see the sequel. Just saw The Mist this weekend. Not sure why they felt the need to end it like that. Pretty sure I don't really care for that needless change, but it didn't completely ruin the film for me either. Meh...

I thought the score was interesting as a sort a textural recap of the film, but at first I was offended by the obvious passages ripped out the Ifukube book. Very retro, and unlike what you usually get after a big budget horror flick. Then I realized it should have been shitty, dropped tuning Metal (if you buy into how they market such films,) and began I appreciate what I was hearing. I hope more filmmakers start seriously considering how soccer mom rock negates the thrills and chills they're going after.

I'm sorry if I offended you in any way with my previous post, I just don't think that by not giving the entire piece a chance you have allowed yourself any credibility. I'm not a musician, so I was unaware of the "30 second rule" snowtires brought up, but I know there is a similar rule in screen writing (and no, I'm not a screenwriter, either, but screenwriting classes were part of my college curriculum and I did retain a couple of things) that says all your exposition should be out of the way (and the 1st turning point should occur) within the 1st 20 minutes of your movie. Does that mean every movie that doesn't follow that rule is bad? To me, these creative "rules" are more like standards. And there are plenty of people who do things outside of the standard methods. And as a non-musical expert, while Giacchino's Cloverfield suite may have defied the "30 second rule," my untrained ears really enjoy listening to it.

if people listened to his stuff and subjectively wrote it off after 30 seconds, especially as he's been doing it for "longer than they can remember" (does that mean you're senile?). And don't talk about yourself in the third person. You come off like a prat and it makes people doubt your objectivity, thus defeating your point. Sure you've got an informed opinion, but by your own argument it doesn't make you the ideal critic either, can you concede that? To get REALLY ironic, wasn't it Bob Dylan that said "you don't have to be a weatherman to know which way the wind blows"? You're probably just pissed off that he's had so much success after coming from (ugh!) videogames! ;) by the way. Getting back to this music, why was it even an issue? I would have thought that putting it online rather than on a physical disc would have been par for the course. Although I do hate compression. Would it have been any more complicated than your average CD single? In all seriousness Snowtyres, maybe you can help us out there. Do you know that side of things? I so wanted this track since hearing it at the cinema that I repeatedly listen to the horrible cinema capture knowing that they will probably never release it. So glad that there are significantly more like me that they will release it officially. Its awesome. And I cant wait to buy this 13 minute cersion. I have all of Michael Giacchino's Lost soundtracks which are absolutely brilliant, there is such a distinct signature to his work yet so varied from the dark scary thumping tracks to the searing heart wrenching ones.

Is it just me or does the female vocalist's style on the ROAR overture sound vaguely familiar? To me it sounds like someone warming up for the STAR TREK original series theme tune, which im guessing will be making atleast a fleeting appearance in the new movie. Just a thought.

The music builds slowly from beginning to end, and as someone else pointed out, it's a great homage to the genre. If you really are a student of the medium, you should be aware of the motifs inherent in the classic city-stomping monster flicks. This music brought all that back in spades, refined it, and then released it in a slow burn that builds up to an intense inferno.
