Not sure what time zone - probably Eastern. But that's when Dent's campaign site said he'd be giving a "public address" at Gotham City Hall.

And it probably won't be the trailer. If the last few have been any indication, it will probably be a nationwide game to reveal the trailer.

I love the viral marketing for this one. They're doing a good job of not only keeping interest up, but actually making the people who want to see it first really work for it and feel like a part of it.

by Sithdan
Mar 31st, 2008
10:51:11 AM
 It seems to me that an awful lot of people are already lauding this film, and the thing isn't even close to being released yet in theaters. You can't judge a movie by the trailers alone. I personally am reserving my judgment until I see it, although Ledger's Joker makeup looks terrible in the previews. Isn’t Joker’s skin supposed to be bleached white, not painted on? What became of adhering to the comic book source material? I want to like the Dark Knight, but I’m going to be cautiously optimistic until I actually see it.

I think it's time they started marketing this properly. I always thought they should just continue on. For Heath's sake. Just recently on the entertainment shows they were interviewing Christian Bale on some red carpet, and having to answer the Heath question looked like it might kill him. No one seems to know what to do still, but I think it's time we moved forward. We all love Heath but we can't have him back, so let's just enjoy his last completed film the way we were always meant to.

And if we get Rickrolled, it's just another excuse for me to do my Rick Astley dance.

You do realize a stuntman died on this movie as well, right? Did you want the movie to be shitcanned over that? Or did you only start caring when Heath died, because you knew who he was? If a movie were cancelled every time an actor or a stuntman or anyone involved with the production died, movies would be cancelled left and right. Plus, I can't imagine Heath not wanting people to see his final performance. Based on all reports, he put a lot of himself into the role of the Joker, and it would be the ultimate disservice for Warner Bros to pretend like it never happened. Warner Bros certainly isn't going to cancel the movie based on a few whiny assholes like you, who have no actual respect for the man who died, but simply want to stir up some shit. If you did respect Heath as a serious actor, you'd know that he would want his performance to be seen.

You don't even know how they're going to handle the Joker's makeup/origin/or anything in this film yet. For all you know, LedgerJoker could be using toxic industrial paint for his face makeup that ends up bleaching him by the end of the film. The whole falling in the vat of acid thing comes from The Killing Joke, and in that book it is the Joker telling his own origin story, so its entirely subjective. He could be making the whole thing up. Besides, we've already seen that origin in Burton's version. I remember a Nolan quote where he said something to the effect of the Joker being an absolute in this film, and that we wouldn't be seeing an origin or an arc. Personally, the clips of Ledger as the Joker I have seen look phenomenal, so in my opinion complaining that his skin isn't bleached is about as banal as complaining about the organic web shooters in the first Spider-man. Why don't you worry about stuff like story, character, direction, performance, and the technical aspects instead? Oh wait, because that would leave you with nothing to complain about.

Anybody who knows a single fucking thing about the character knows that the makeup and the look of the Joker is almost incidental and merely compliments the sheer insanity of the character, something Heath looks to be channeling in his portrayal. The aspect of the Joker that matters most is his insanity, mingled with his penchant for chaos, and how that is presented through the conduit of an actor. I can already discern that Heath has nailed the role in a way nobody else has even approached based on what I’ve seen and heard thus far. If a bit of bleached skin is the most important aspect of the Joker to you personally, go whack off to the ‘89 version of Batman since some of you know fuck all about the character anyway.

 Honestly, from the looks of it, my 6-year-old nephew could have done a better job finger painting the Joker's makeup in this movie. It looks like it's been literally just smeared on. The meticulous Joker makeup presented in Tim Burton's 1989 masterpiece featured not only the red lips and white skin, but the twisted grin as well. At least some effort went into the Joker's iconic appearance. Ledger looks like a disgruntled teenager who's pissed off at his parents for not letting him go to the ICP concert.

This movie has had way too much "viral" marketing already (playing cards left on club floors, clever web sites); while it may be clever it's hardly innovative. The posters have been up for months now, the trailers as well. How much more low key viral marketing is necessary? Either put a real bat signal in every major metropolitan area and have someone drive around in a replica batmobile or stop with the half assed marketing and release the film early. just my 2 cents.

Technically I'm in the corner of the people who think Nolan's Joker design looks cool and that a superhero film doesn't have to be completely faithful to its source material (and sometimes shouldn't be) in order to be good. But in a TalkBack where people are arguing about what to do about a film that someone dies either making (crew members) or shortly after (Heath Ledger), calling Sithdan "an ass" for ranting about make-up seems a little absurd. I would have gone with froot loop, or perhaps wingnut. *** I also hope the irony of people accusing him of "judging the movie before it comes out" isn't lost on anybody else.

you have to give credit to true unapologetic idiocy. Remember...a retard doesn't know he's retarded. He has nothing to compare to.

The makeup is dead on right. The way it always should have been.

I mean, everyone's gonna watch this film anyway, and I have a sinking feeling that the audience will triple since it's "Heath Ledger's last movie". So, if it is yet another trailer for Dark Knight, isn't a bit redundant? It's sort of like Bart Simpson with the Itchy & Scratchy ticket, except I'm old enough not to have my Dad ban me from watching the movie... (my mom says I'm cool! lol)

'Nuff said. Those earlier Batman films suffered under Burton's goth-camp and they went downhill from there. Thank goodness for the 180 degree turnaround via Nolan and Bale. It may not cater to everyone's favorite details (and quite frankly, there are too many to care), but at least they're striving for a legitimate weight with the character.

A "real life Joker" wouldn't exist, no more than some millionaire fighting crime and protecting the poor. It's fuckign BATMAN. And that first movie, Begins, was FAR from realistic with it's horrible dialogue and shitty attempts at humor. That was the the main thing I found so hideous: they shoved that "realism" down your throat in all the promos and docs yet had blatantly bad and poorly delivered lines. Realism my fuckin' ass. Forgive me. It should have been more like Batman and Robin, since there's no way in reality a man could ever dress up like a bat. Gotcha. I never said that everything in the movie was completely realistic. My point was that it attempted a sense of realism. It's much easier to suspend disbelief watching Batman Begin than it is ANY other Batman movie. So it would be stupid to have a cleancut Joker with completely, perfectly bleached skin and ruby lips. And get the fuck out of my face with that "nigga please" bullshit.

The problems with Burton's Batmans
by Gwai Lo
Apr 1st, 2008
12:21:55 AM
Almost everyone acknowledges that Schumacher's films were garbage, although some people still try and defend Batman Forever for some unknown reason. But there is a lot of contention over Burton's Batman films. I'm not a huge Burton fan. I think even with his best films he has a tendency to coast on art direction, and for those that like real movie magic with lots of pretty colors and big stylistic flourishes he's probably the cat's pajamas. For my money Ed Wood is his only truly great film, and it owes part of its success to the fact that he was able to reign in his stylistic excesses for once. But I digress, back to his Batman films. The original Batman film was good for it's day, and there's no doubt that it did a lot to repair the image of a silly Batman fostered by the Adam West incarnation. But for those that haven't seen it in a while, watch it again and try and remain objective. These are not the characters, and I can't imagine anyone arguing otherwise. Let's look at Batman first of all. Making Jack Napier the murderer of Wayne's parents isn't just a minor change that provides narrative cohesion, it completely alters who Batman is as a character. Batman's quest becomes about revenge, rather than justice. Batman Begins does it right: Joe Chill kills Wayne's parents, Joe Chill dies before Bruce can get revenge, Bruce must channel his issues into a general quest for justice. If the Joker kills the Waynes, then Batman's quest ends when Batman drops him off the top of that building. This is one of many instances in the Burton films where Batman kills people (he also drops a thug to his death and shields up in the Batmobile while he blows up a bunch of henchmen.) Michael Keaton plays Bruce Wayne as an aloof, awkward weirdo, nevermind that physically he looks nothing like the character should. Hanging upside down to sleep? Bruce Wayne doesn't think he's a bat. By the time we got to Batman Returns, Burton was clearly bored with the character and gave most of the screen time to the three primary villains. For those that complained about the action in Begins, I'll take shaky cam over Batman programming his batarang to take out a bunch of guys cartoon style, and only making big wide turns in the unweildy Batmobile because he grappling hooks to buildings with it. I'd rather see the Tumbler ripping around Gotham like a believable urban tank than Batman getting his Batplane shot down with a pistol. I was going to thoroughly go through the other characters as well to explain why they miss the mark, but I sense this post is already getting long. Burton made some enjoyable movies, but Nolan took the characters seriously, paid more respect to the source material and ended up making a far better film in the process. Sure, there are flaws, but I don't understand how people who champion Burton's version can look past the much more glaring flaws in his movies. Entertaining films? If I'm in the right mood and feeling nostalgic, yes. A proper depiction of Batman? Not by a long shot, now that one actually exists.

Aside from a brief period in the 40's, Batman has never killed the bad guys. He needs to have a moral code to walk that thin line as a vigilante. That's why he always rounds up the villains and brings them to Arkham, even though they'll inevitably get out and cause more havoc. Batman could have spared Gotham a lot of grief by doing exactly what he did in Batman 89, killing the Joker. But he doesn't, because that would make him no better than the freaks he brings to justice. This notion is the core of his character, to fuck with it is to completely change who he is.

An All-Encompassing Trailer? For A Change?
by Thy_Kingdom_Come
Apr 1st, 2008
04:11:32 AM
The first two trailers were spectacular. The first trailer set the precedent for what a kick ass trailer should be minus any actual footage being shown. The second trailer was a great introduction to Ledger's portrayal of the Joker, though it was merely a hint of things to come. But it's been long overdue time for an all-encompassing trailer that actually involves EVERYONE more. For one thing, it doesn't seem like, aside from showing her on screen, Nolan has any confidence in Maggie Gyllenhaal's performance- hence the fact that no actual dialogue was uttered by her in the second trailer. Also, what's with the half-second glimpse of Eckhart as Dent? Almost 75% of the viral marketing for The Dark Knight has revolved around Dent's campaign to become the District Attorney for Gotham City, yet he was almost nowhere to be seen in the second trailer. The only significant dialogue uttered by ANYONE in the trailer aside from Ledger's Joker, Bale's Batman, and Caine's Alfred, was one brief line by Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman as Commissioner Gordon and Lucius Fox respectively. I hope the third trailer has a more all-encompassing feel to it for the sole reason that there are other characters in The Dark Knight aside from The Joker and Batman that need to be (and more than likely will be, knowing Nolan) fleshed out in the film. Aside from the aforementioned gripes, the first two trailers were spectacular, the third one will probably be that much better, and the film will own 2008. Because nothing has come before it thus far that could light a candle to it, and NOTHING is going to be released in its wake that will even compare. And on another note, in 2009, who watches the watchmen?

I like that WB and Nolan only show what they want to show us. I think the movie will take us in a direction that we've not seen in the trailers. Chris Nolan has already stated that the Joker is not going to be the main protagonist in this movie. He is a powerfull element, but I can't help but feel that there is going to be so much more to this flick that Batman vs Joker. We already know that two-face only comes in at the end of the movie. So what's the deal? The trailers give us very littl in the way of plot detail, and I'm hoping that it stays that way.

Anyone that cites Tim Burton's 1989 "Batman" as a point of reference when discussing Batman's moral code is a complete moron. Why? Because Tim Burton openly admitted after making the movie that he wanted NOTHING to do with the comics/source material. The man is an overgrown goth-child who was obsessed with the dark nature of Batman and how he could utilize said nature to make a buck and relate to his own "tortured" childhood. Burton didn't care for the fact that JOE CHILL killed Bruce Wayne's parent's- NOT THE JOKER/Jack Napier (the idiotic real name that soooooooooo many people I know still associate with the Joker, though the comics never really ever gave him a full real name to begin with. *coughKILLINGJOKEcough*). Nor did he care to actually explore the Red Hood angle with the creation of the Joker. Instead he used Jack Palace to sell "Jack Napier" out to the cops, which was so inaccurate it still agitates the crap out of me to this day. Just a couple of the many outrageous inaccuracies that Burton didn't give a damn to avoid. Burton's 1989 film was a popcorn flick and a visual feast at best, AT THE TIME. It had an absolutely beautiful soundtrack (Prince music aside). I liked it as a kid before I seriously started reading Batman, Detective Comics, and every other bat-associated title (i.e. Legends of the Dark Knight, Robin, and Nightwing). After I started paying attention to the aforementioned source material I realized just how badly Burton took a shit on what Batman truly stood for. Batman does not kill... PERIOD. Last I checked, the Joker's STILL ALIVE. Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin is still alive and running his Iceberg lounge. Selina Kyle/Catwoman is spending her dear sweet time trying to get off the hell world in Salvation Run. The Riddler isn't in ARKHAM flapping straight-jacket wings, he's an honest detective. Two-Face is, well, back to being good old Two-Face. Heck he's been gone since the "One-Year Later" story for some time now. Poison Ivy is still retarded (not literally, she's just a terrible villain who no one should pay attention to). Bane is on the same hell planet in Salvation Run with Catwoman and needs to return to his state of awesomeness as was conveyed in and before Knightfall. And Mr. Freeze is there with them both I believe. Or in Gotham killing people because now that Nora's gone he's got nothing left. The point of the above movie/comic references is that neither Burton nor Schumaker got it right. They didn't give a damn for the source material, hence the fact that they are not attached to the property that is Batman anymore. If Nolan sticks with the franchise until the end of the third film like he has planned to, this will be the first director in the history of the Batman movie franchise to actually stay for more than two films as well as make more than ONE successful film. And surprisingly enough, Nolan will have done so by being at least SOMEWHAT faithful to the source material which real Batman fans covet daily. That's my two cents. The Dark Knight's going to own by the way. And to hell with Burton and Schumaker's versions of The Bat. They just wanted to make a quick buck. Cite them as a point of reference for anything Batman and prepare to have your ass handed to you. 'Nuff said.
you don't get an artist

We make like the aspect of something, but as an artist we may need to change it around too enjoy it. Burton didn't make bats to make a buck. He could have made the same story sans the name batman. He did ti cause he saw something in the symbol, and he being a true artist took what he wanted from the symbol and made it his own. Instead of walking in the footprints of the source material. You people get more cynical as time passes. You have no idea how big that film was to us 13 and under's- back when it came out. It was the beginning of all this serious superhero film shit, and it was dark for it's day.

The preview images, especially on Superherohype.com which shows Rorschach dealing with a cop that he set on fire (I believe), are very convincing. Well, aside from Ozymandias who looks like a complete ass, but that's because his nipple-suit takes me back to Schumacher's Batman and Robin and, well, that should be enough to make ANYONE cringe. Watchmen could easily own 2009 after The Dark Knight owns 2008. It all depends on whether or not Zach Snyder decides to make another addition to the original storyline (like he did with 300 where he added the idiotic corrupt politician back at home just to give Lena Headey some more dialogue where NONE was needed to make 300 a more vagina-friendly film). Because screwing up V For Vendetta, From Hell, The League of Extraordinary Gentleman, and Swamp Thing was one thing, for the respective directors/writers of those film-adaptations. Watchmen is considered by many to be the holy grail of graphic novels. If Snyder muffs this one by adding some useless side story like he did in 300 or decides to go with his own personal interpretation, then the movie is doomed just like Alan Moore has more than likely ALREADY predicted since he believes that none of his works can be done justice. Sadly, Moore just might be right if Watchmen gets screwed up royally. Who knows...
They keep comitting crimes on the streets because it's comics...

I think that saying killing is the only way to handle the loons of Gotham because they keep escaping is ignoring the conventions of selling a monthly comic and telling stories within that framework. John Wayne Gacy, Ted Bundy, Charles Manson and their like didn't break out of prison on a monthly basis - and they were pretty twisted. The reason Joker, Riddler and those cats keep escaping is to tell stories. If we were telling the story more realistically, The Joker, just like other serial killers, would have been locked up so tight, and sedated so heavily, we'd never see him except on a sixty minutes special. That, or he'd *somehow* be found to be sane enough to go to trial and presumbly excuted after a hell of a long prison term. Either way, he wouldn't be on the streets again, so killing him to prevent his 'comic escapes' every month would be unnecessary. The writer is god in a comic and sort of fudges those details and we're meant to ignore them in favor of enjoying the story. To keep the stories flowing, the 'looney bin' has to be pathetic enough so there are villains for Batman to fight. --It would make sense for Bruce Wayne to build a state of the art prison/mental health facility, donate it to the city, and attract top staff with an extra stipend he would provide. --But that will never happen, because where would the bad guys (and stories) come from...?

Sorry buddy, but we're not all cynics. I was 6 years old when Burton's film came out and I was left in awe. I saw the film numerous times in theaters and I even own it on dvd. Why I look back on it now and KNOW, not think, KNOW that Burton purposely shit on the source material is because he's been quoted as saying so himself. Look it up. Kevin Smith (a really bad ass actor/director) handed Burton's ass to him for that very reason if you didn't already know. The entertainment value of the 1989 film still stands, I'll grant you THAT much. But as a long-time fan of Batman and the DCU in general, aside from simple mindless entertainment and a general appeal to depressed poser goth kids EVERYWHERE, Burton's '89 film is a plot-hole ridden, utter piece of crap that shit on the very memory of what Bill Finger and Bob Kane created. "He saw something in the symbol." Yeah, I'm fairly certain that I know what Burton "saw" too. He saw his own depressed childhood/teen goth years when he sat in a corner brooding and decided that Batman would be his onscreen return to the good old days. Cynical my ass. It's the reason why, when people look back twenty years from now, they'll remember and praise Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins and it's subsequent sequels and won't have the foggiest memory as to the crap factories that Burton and Schumacher were responsible for.
I'm sorry, but the whole "artist" thing is a cop-out
by Gwai Lo

It's 3 in the morning and I'm about to go to bed so I'll make this brief, but hundreds of artists have given their interpretations of Batman without changing who he is. Just because Burton is a filmmaker and not a comic writer doesn't give him any special license to do what he wants with an established property. (Yes, I realize film adaptations need to differ from print to work, I am talking about core changes to character) Frank Miller's Batman will kick the everloving shit out of someone, but he won't kill them. Burton has admitted he didn't even bother to read any of the comics, which is a great disservice to the character. If he was really worth his salt as an artist he would be able to bring the same level of artistry to a faithful adaptation, rather than making pointless changes to satisfy his need to put his authorial stamp on the thing. This goes for Sam Hamm as well, who wrote the script.
In fact, a lot more fingers should point at Sam Hamm
by Gwai Lo
Apr 1st, 2008
05:10:11 AM
He's the one that wrote a Batman that doesn't have much to do with the comics. Burton deserves shit for not reading any of the comics and keeping the writer in check, but if anyone has read Hamm's Watchmen script it's easy to see that the guy has no respect for whatever he's adapting.

I think Batman rocks. He's cool, he's spooky, he's badass, he's nuts. That being said, given that he's this dark figure of vengence, he SHOULD go to the darkside in extremely hardcore ways -- he should kill, torture, maim, and all manner of other insanity. I know that he won't, but I think he should. Its the one thing that always bugged me about him. Oh, okay, that, and the fact that he hangs out with a 14 year old acrobat in green speedoes.

Joel Schumacher? I mean, if you wanna talk about the greatest arse-nuggets in the Batman canon, you can't go past Batman Forever and Batman and Robin... Burton's films have aged, sure... but take a look at Jurassic Park or Waynes World... same story... things just look different after 15 or 20 years... I know that mentioning Schumacher's Bat-films is like the love-that-dare-not-speak-its-n ame in a satanic church with Michael Bay having a smoke on the side, but let's have some perspective people!

and still is. I loved it as a child. You've got to accept that the Adam West version of the caped crusader was made campy for kids, not comic book buffs. I loved the Burton films, but agree that it had weak spots. The first movie made a big deal of the Batplane rocketing up to the moon, but as soon as Joker sees it, he takes it out with one shot. Weak. Batman Begins / TDK are new incarnations for new times, and Nolan did a great job. If anyone is still offended by the TV show Batman, it's only because you're looking to be offended by it.

Burton REINVENTED Batman
by Sithdan
Apr 1st, 2008
08:49:09 AM
The Dark Knight would be NOTHING without Burton's 1989 Batman film. Sam Hamm crafted a compelling adaptation that reinvented the Dark Knight for the big screen. Before Burton and Hamm came around, the only Batman the general audience identified with was the campy incarnation from the 1960s. An ambiguously gay duo living together with their loyal butler. Burton's style of Batman is being emulated even today by Christian Bale. I personally had no problem with Batman Begins. But what really fucking annoys me is this bandwagon of fans who suddenly think the 1989 version betrayed the comics and should be deleted from our collective memories. The Dark Knight wouldn't even exist had it not been for Burton's film. At least not in its current form. Hell, I think the Dark Knight should have acknowledge Burton for his work as an inspiration.
