Dour and passionless. Two things that are the death knell of any musical. Not to mention Burtons completely uninspired directing. most of the movie is just a character walking back and forth in a room singing glumly to themself rather than using the rich tapestry of victorian England around them. Only one song had any life and that's when Burton decided it was ok to get a little creative witht he background. Just no sense of scope whatsoever. And the subplot involving the children which Burton clearly didn't give a shit about or bother to resolve.

Best Burton in YEARS. I just recently saw Planet of the Apes on TV the other day and despite the amazing make-up and some of the performances, couldn't help but think how much it missed the point...

But he nailed Todd, and this alone may have single-handedly saved his career. We all love Burton and want nothing but his morbid, genre-shifting best. When is the next claymation coming, anyway?

Sweeny Todd is a bleak film by design and I think the lack of passion was a significant component of these characters, all of whom are living is a hopeless world, scratching and clawing for survival. The film is in the tradition of Greek and Shakespearian tragedy and there was never a moment where I thought things would turn out well for Todd. In many ways Sweeny Todd is the antithesis of most musicals as it isn’t cheerful or optimistic but rather mocks the form with a nasty premise, darkly humorous musical numbers and gore-filled violence in the vein of Grand Guignol. I understand that the film didn’t work for everybody but personally I loved it and felt it was a brilliant addition to Burton’s portfolio. It remains one of my personal favorites of 2007. Ditto on the hopes for a forthcoming Blueray soon.

I have to agree with IndustryKiller! For whatever reason the film felt emotionally flat to me. Only one or two of the songs really made it for me. The ending had a nice twist I didn't see coming for some inexplicable reason, but the love story between the two younger people was never resolved. She disappeared and he left afterwards. Ummm...did they find each other or what? Am I supposed to wonder if they did, because honestly, I didn't care too much to begin with. This felt like another phoned in directorial performance by Burton. He has potential to be a real auteur but he's a slave to Hollywood. It makes you sick. Ed Wood is still his materpiece because of its maturity and its uncommercial feel.

I've been to the one in New Orleans and it's just a filthy bar with some average girls dancing around on the bar acting like you should tip them or something. It's New Orleans. The ass ranges from drunken girls on the strip for free to girls who work actual strip clubs to, for the really desperate, real hookers. The last thing I need is some broad tripping over my drink when I'm trying to tie one on. Worst concept for a bar ever. And they made a movie out of it.

...Burton missed a lot of the humor in "Sweeney Todd" that was in the stage version. What should be darkly humorous ended up being just dark a good deal of the time. Not even "Try The Priest" could come close to how uproarious the number is supposed to be. Not that I didn't like the movie--I think it's a B+--but Burton missed a few marks.

And Node, Anthony and Joanna run off together at the end. No, they don't look back, but why should they?

I actually found some of it quite funny but I think that ultimately Burton placed his own spin on the material, a spin that I found appropriate. To be fair I haven’t seen the stage play but the character and story of Todd seem to lean towards tragedy more than comedy. I really liked the dark, morbid feel of the film but I also laughed quite a bit at the Priest in the Pie, Worst Pies in London, and the fantasy sequence, which I actually thought was hilarious. Regardless, I’m glad you enjoyed it even if the humor fell flat for you personally.

35 isn't old and her looks aren't the problem. She's an empty husk of a human being and she always had been. There is nothing even remotely substantive in her and the extreme superficialities of her personality come bubbling up every time she opens that mouth of hers. Great looks are meaningless without something deeper under the epidermis.

I don't watch her show, but I did catch one where she put on a fat suit and was amazed at how people treated her so horribly when she wasn't Tyra Banks. She thought it was because she was fat, but it wasn't.

I wanted to yell at the screen, "It's because you don't have a personality to see past the fat suit, you stupid slattern!" or, "It's not because you're in a fat suit! It's because you're a vapid bitch!"

I've dated big girls (I like them curvy) and let me tell you: I'd go for a big girl with a decent brain before I'd ever go for Tyra Banks in her prime. There has to be something THERE for you to get along with once the sex is over.

I was really looking forward to it. Ed Wood is one of my all-time faves. Unfortunately for Sweeney Todd, the story absolutely blows. It's about nothing and it goes nowhere. Depp is boring and the gore is overdone. I like a good slasher, but all the blood was just pointless in this film. And Tyra Banks scares the shit out of me.

Sweeny Todd isn't a slasher; it's a musical tragedy. If you didn't like the film that's fine but I really don't get your point that "the story goes nowhere" when in actuality the story is quite clear and the resolution obvious.

He probably was much better before, but when he had a show after Letterman all he would do is bitch about how Dave didn't tell home audiences to watch the Late, Late Show after Letterman's show went off. And once there was a gentleman that had come on to talk about how his son was murdered, and it was pretty sad. The next show, Snyder actually MADE FUN of the guy, including making fun of how sad the story was and even mocking the man's tie. Hopefully in his prime days he wasn't the vapid, self-absorbed knob he was on the Late Late Show.

Interestingly enough the movie and the stage versions I've seen do have a few key differences. I think most people will agree that on stage the descent into madness is a great deal more joyful on stage an it seemed at times that Sweeney reciprocates Lovett's affections to a point. In the film he's more or less oblivious to her. There should have been a little more fun in "Try the Priest." But the film hit me more emotionally, Rickman was positively vile (Spall was perfectly cast too) and a good change in my book is that Tobey was played by an actual child.

That film is such a flat out masterpiece. It has genuine humour not for the kiddies, is the film with the truly best performances of any other Burton films, and when Bela dies its actually quite sad! I also happen to think its the best movie biopic out there, staying faithful to the source material with brilliant attention to detail of what happened in Woods life, and isn't particularly biased in that it doesn't shout out from the rooftops 'THIS GUY IS A GOD!' Burtons best and most mature movie by far, I only wish he did more stuff like this!

to movie adapation. Burton and Depp deliver. The songs the Ids(sex, greed, and violence) the weirdness, performances, the blood, the meat pies. This is the joyously twisted treatment the cinema musical has been waiting for. And Ed Wopod was brilliant, too. Genius work by tim Burton and Johnny Depp. Sackoff does look hot on that DVD cover. I think its the gun, nice outfit too.

I haven't seen Coyote Ugly so can't say but I have seen "Lost and Delirious" and you get some gratuitous Perabo boobage in that flick (plus some more gratuitous Jessica Pare nudity as well!). A comparison could be made I think to determine boob validity in CU? So check out L&D and along the way, you'll discover a great little gem of a movie and a powerhouse performance by Perabo.

Here's why The Mist sucks balls
by Bobo_Vision

Well, just a few reasons why. First, the CGI was horrible. The CGI spiders were comparable in quality to those in Eight-Legged Freaks.

Then, the whole religion/crazy-messiah-lady scenario was just too over the top. Disaster happens, then the crazy religious lady thinks she's God's messenger and people start blindly following her. It was really heavy-handed - poorly acted and unrealistic. Plus, the whole plot was revealed in the trailer.

Then there's the ending. (SPOILERS) So I'm guessing the point of the movie was to keep faith, not necessarily religious faith, but faith in life and to never give up. Instead, they opt for suicide (with the exception of Thomas Lane's sleeping son), and Lane blows all their brains out, including his boy who he spent the entire movie trying to protect and save. What the fuck? Yeah, I get the point of the movie, but it was poorly done. A movie like "Signs" had pretty much the same message about faith, and did a much better job - "Signs" was not a phenomenal movie, but compared to The Mist, its in a whole different league. And these are just a few reasons why The Mist sucks balls.

Dat's punny right there. Or, in an unimaginable situation a loving parent thinks he's making the right choice in sparing his child from being fuckin' EATEN by euthanasia with a bullet. Only to find it was the wrong choice. What the hell don't you people understand about HORROR?

I was kind of hot/cold over The Mist. Over all it was disapointing, but I LOVED the ending. Soylent Mean fucking nailed it. There could be nothing more horrific than killing your own son, only to realize you were 5 minutes away from being saved. What a mind fuck.

there. The mist was one of the most old-school effects movies for ages. Darabont is a bit like you when it comes to CGI (just not quite so myopic), and he used animatronics wherever he possibly could with rod removal and things like that rather than go all cg all the time.

So having just said you're an idiot I'll admit I agree with you to a point - and also with Soylent who makes the best point about HORROR. For me the whole b-movie thing of government experiments gone wrong, tentacles and the yes-over the top religious zealotry (she did play it super theatrically) was all cool but there was no slow tonal shift through the whole third act into the REAL horror the ending that is tonally so different (IMHO) of everything that came before. I think that's why people are rejecting it.

Also Soylent I think (SPOILERAMA) just cutting to the longshot (instead of maybe a slow pullout to give you more of that sickening feeling) and having the shots come so quickly after the cut doesn't ratchet up the tension enough for such a conceptually brutal sequence. It didn't have time to sink in - surely you need time to consider the ramifications - what happens to who in what order and how that affects the others before they get it too. And then a bit of breathing space before the tanks and the mist clearing - I know it works on the page to have that stuff follow so quickly and that's the point but cinematic timing for the audience is a tricky thing. Fair point? And yeah krish-o - to KNOW you did the right thing - and that be absolutely no fucking solace whatsoever because everything's safe again. Whoa baby.

...dinosaurs in Jurassic Park, so are you going to tell me there was no CGI in that movie too? You see half vader, what they often do is combine animitronics with CGI, but clearly in the Mist when the spiders are walking, its CGI. I suggest you watch the movie again, okay little buddy? And when you're done, you don't have to apologize for your error. Having to watch The Mist again will be punishment enough.

most definitely and the ending to The Mist is way more jarring than the seeming loose ends of No Country For Old Men (last year's biggest film ending gripe for way too many people). If I had directed The Mist (insert laughter here) I would have had the scene go on with David either going over a mist enshrouded hill or around a corner, after about 5 minutes of him just walking, hearing shit he can not see (and can't explain). Allow the killing(s) to sink in, the despair to sink in, and then rescue. I also would have had David just stand there, dumbfounded, then roll credits. No cry of anguish (although it was obviously very fucking appropriate for the situation). That's how I would have ended it.

But I didn't direct The Mist, and what Darabont came up with is one of the most brilliant instances of cinematic Horror in ages. I watch a ton of Horror movies. I fucking revere the genre. After seeing The Mist I think Darabont holds the genre in a very similar regard.

I'm sure there's a slew of Japanese Horror remakes on the horizon for those of you who need nasty things on screen to be spoon fed to you. For those of you who like to be immersed in the films you watch I would give a hearty thanks to filmmakers like Frank Darabont who consistently bring that element of storytelling to the movie screen canvas.

Beware the girls with long black hair, ooooooooooooooooooooooooooh!

Forgive me for actually reading your post the way it was actually written. When you first said the cgi was horrible, of course I read it as a blanket statement and in the absence of anything but the following statement saying the spiders were even worse than the rest, came to the logical conclusion you didn't know what the fuck you were talking about. - You didn't contrast it by proving you knew there was stuff that WASN'T done with CGI after all. Then you backed up your lack of substantiation by saying it was all based on seeing the flick and no knowledge whatsoever about how any of the effects were actually achieved. Not to mention misunderstanding the ending. Maybe "backed up" is the wrong term to use there if I'm talking about your post though. And of course the moronic statement about Jurassic Park. Yeah, sure shmucko. That's what I'm going to tell you, mindreader. Whatever, weak sauce. Feeble fucking comeback.

To address the spider point. It makes complete sense to do that movement stuff CG you moron. Can it be shitty? Of course, especially when they're sci-fi superspiders that strain the laws of physics through their very conception. But if you don't think some dodgy mass, gravity and movement in CG for those particular bits is still preferable and more convincing for those requirements than trying to achieve the same thing with animatronics and puppetry, there's no saving you.

Ever seen comparable scenes in 'old school' movies? Arachnaphobia? Jumanji (closer to what we're talking about)? I use those two as more recent examples of old-tech. Sorry dude, a spider on a rollerskate or remote control car isn't exactly convincing in its movement. SO basically mate, no error on my part. At least I know what the fuck I'm going on about. Are you going to try to tell me Lord of the Rings would have been better with an animatronic spider? Of course not. Jesus. As you have no idea, there was a 3-foot spider puppet built by KNB with the quills and stuff, but the super-mobile stuff was Café FX CG. Tell me oh wise one, how exactly would YOU achieve a shot of a guy bursting open and thousands of baby spiders vomiting forth? If your answer is that you couldn't do it traditionally and would either delete the scene or do something less ambitious than try to actually do what's in the script, then welcome to my fucking point.

You also don't seem to get that I wasn't being a brainless CG advocate. Not that anyone around here seems to notice, but I always list the benefits AND drawbacks of each technique, and don't just spout "cg is shit" or "CG is ALWAYS better". You're right in that BAD cg is shit, but oldschool techniques would have been much worse in this context: incredibly mobile and articulated creature work. Café's stuff was no better or worse than KNBs in my opinion. Why do you think they separated the work like that? Oh that's right. You don't KNOW who did what or why they would do it that way.

I'm sure you'll reply with something lame like "I shouldn't HAVE to know how they did it to know it sucked". Which would only be true if you hadn't made an arse of yourself with the unsupported or thought-out CG comments.

Finally, for your info, although the use of animatronics (barring the weak baby/egg and spitter) with the CG in Jurassic Park was great and most people don't even notice the "hide the CG" stuff (rain, night etc.), the ending WAS actually ruined by Spielberg using CG as a last-minute "fix". I have an earlier script from when they were still in production and they were going to use earthmoving equipment to defeat the dinos. He was so enamoured of the cg though that he put the cg Rex in there late in the game (too late for reshoots) which turned into a lame deus-ex-machina and went completely against his tried-and-true formula (even in that same movie) of telegraphing/setting up for the payoff. I love the movie, but geez. And the point here of course Bobo, is that it's NOT CG but bad USE or implementation of CG which is to blame.

Right. Bobo. I've taken a breath now and wanted to say I apologise for going so over the top with that rant. Yeah I realise that's half the fun of TBs but it's not the way to show someone they're being a patronising dick. I still stand by the points I made don't get me wrong, but basically I've had a shitty day and took it out on you. Abin sur's refutation was much better. And more succinct.

Maybe I shoulda screamed at Sithdan's moronic questions about the Joker's blonde 'hair' instead.
