The lead was terrible, not likeable at all and he had no charisma...the Hoff stole the show and he only had a couple of minutes of screentime.

The CSI/MTV transitions were awful, the car is just horrific and don't get me started on the fucked up theme tune.

They need to recast the roles (apart from the guy from X-Men, he was ok), hire better writers, ditch the ugly car, bring back the original KITT voice if possible, and fix the damn theme tune...maybe then the show will be above boring.

The 1985 series lasted from 1985-1989. that is a decent run for a science fiction show without a regular cast and no Rod Serling. I would not call it a flop.

I will admit the 2002 series was awful. One of the last few episodes starred Jessica simpson. 'Nuff said.

Well I know of one die-hard fan of the original KR who'll be balled up under his Knight Rider quilt (in one of those car-shaped Knight Rider beds from the 80's) crying hard into the night. Poor Victor Kros.... I guess Larson's movie project (which I sincerely doubt would have EVER happened - look at the history of his so-called efforts to get a Galactica movie made) will be consigned to the scrap yard of unmade movies. Oh and the 80's Mission Impossible at least lasted two seasons (88-90), so it's not quite the failure of the remakes of Bionic Woman, Night Stalker, or Bret Maverick.

That's an interesting mention. The New Odd Couple originally was broadcast during the writer's strike in the 1980s. Unlike the recent strike, actors were not inclined to honor the WGA picket lines. But without scripts, ABC decided to try a strange reboot. They cast the Odd Couple with African-American actors and used the scripts from the original shows.

According to Wikipedia, which doesn't mention the context of the writer's strike, some new episodes were eventually produced. I'm guessing this was after the strike ended...

Sorry that wasn't clear. I meant that after the high ratings of the pilot for Bionic, people stop watching the series. They just watched the pilot out of curiosity. I suspect the same with Knight Rider. A lot of people watched the new pilot, but I don't think a lot of people thought much of it...

It would be an equally profitable investment. I mean let's be serious here. That pilot was moronic garbage, and not in a fun way, or even a "well, people are morons, they like this kind of horse shit" kind of way. It seemed like an unaired pilot from 1993. All the actors were bad, the story offered nothing new or cool, it wasn't even funny.

I don't really give a shit about the legacy of the talking car but I figured it could be revamped into some dumb fun. Unfortunately they were not interested in that.

a story about NBC announcing it's scheduling for the next 52 weeks - admittedly more implication than confirmation but there it is on variety.com about three weeks ago - NBC is doing a Knight Rider series...

...anyway, about the actual SHOW...

DAMN THAT PILOT SUCKED! From the craptacular "Nu-Metal" music right through to the formation of "Team Knight Rider: The Next Generation" right at the end - The Hoff really was the highlight of that show for all of about 30seconds - and I soooooooooo didn't want it to be like that!

I think the Trek references are actually spot on - the idiots in charge of that let the SAME douchbag team run FAILURE after FAILURE into the ground - all they needed was a different approach...

It was syndicated (but was a Universal production). "Michael Knight" appears in the final scene of the series, but it wasn't Hasselhoff--it was another actor with his back to the camera (I'm sure they were hoping to bring the Hoff aboard for a Season 2 guest appearance). Anyway, TKR was lightyears better than KR2008...and will probably have the longer run of the two.

There is alot of bitchassness going on here. First of all, the formula for this show is exactly the same as the old show (which kicked much ass, fuck you very much). The old show was partially a commercial for a very sleek looking car that was within blue collar price range, with Larsons brand of mindless sci-fi thrown in. The dialogue wasn't always great, sometimes the plot sucked...it was typical '80's fare. But from the standpoint of an 8 year old; I was hooked from the get go. KITT is still awesome to this day (you know you would love to roll either version, so just shut the fuck up), the idea that one man can make a difference is something I've always believed in and I sincerely hope that if I have an evil doppleganger he has a little goatee. The A-Team, OG Battlestar Galactica and Knight Rider may have all had their faults and flaws but kicked much ass none the less (thanks due to Glenn Larson. Not to be on his nuts or anything but all of those shows are as much a part of my childhood as Star Wars). As far as the new series goes...damn people, at least give it a season before you start bitching; what else is there on TV as of late? How could this be any worse than Eli Stone, Reaper, Smallville, this new piece of shit remake of 90210 or the 8 million reality abortions that clog the airwaves and further the dumbing down of the American sheeple? Or just shut the fuck up; have you any idea how nerdy and whiny you gays sound?
The new pilot was bland.

The pilot never justified the remake. There was nothing in the pilot that said to me : yip thats why we need Knight rider!!" A stron possibility that this could end up like Bionic woman. Unless there is a massive shift in the writing it wont be relevant to viewers in the 21st century.

the camouflage bit when they were on the run actually worked well with a Mustang because it was able to "blend in" and look an ordinary, fairly common car - Mustangs are about as common as you can get in America, right?

I have to agree with the wowsah - what exactly about this pilot told Network executives "oh yeah we're on to a WINNER here!" ??

The "pilot" was a joke. One of the reasons Knight Rider worked was the Kirk/Spock dichotomy between Michael and KITT. That "chemistry" was nowhere to be found. Not to mention the car was all wrong... still I hope they send me a custom John Mayer branded Shelby Mustang.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooo! They will never, ever learn. This is filler for the network to pad out it's schedule. They can't possibly think it wil be a runaway hit. The pilot had exactly one good scene. When Mike turned the Ford Mustang KITT sideways in front of the Ford SUV to stop it cold. great looking crash. Other than that you could've skipped the 2 hours leading up to it.

The bottom line is that the movie / backdoor pilot got good ratings because people were curious. Everbody I know thought it sucked but stayed tuned to see if it would get better. It's not like there was anything good on any of the other networks at that time. It was a nostalgia type of thing.

There is no way they stay tuned to the series. It'll be canceled after single season, if it even makes it that long. Train wrecks are only fun to look at for so long.

I bought a Ford a few years ago...worst mistake I ever made. I've already replaced the engine, water pump, tires, seatbelt, mirror, automatic windows and windshield washing fluid. I only owned the car for a few years when the engine blew. NO MORE Fords for me. I sold that sucker to an even bigger sucker and put a down payment on a Honda. "Made in America" is now a deterrent for me.

"People need to escape. Ben's programming strategy is to find some shows where people can tune in and then mentally tune out. That's his directive, and I think you'll see that reflected in the programs."

When the programmer of a major network has a 'directive' to dumb down his shows, you know you're in for a shitfest season. NBC can kiss my ass. I'm barely able to stomach Heroes anymore, and that's one of their more 'complex' shows. Right now, the only thing with any intelligence on NBC is Medium (I hear FNL is good, but never got into it. They're probably canceling it anyway). And I wish they had kept Journeyman. Obviously a brilliant show like that is never going to last on the 'dumbed-down' network.

That would haev made the Pilot Movie WAAAAAAAAAY better. 3. A stronger sense of the "Foundation" and its original legacy 2. A better plot, with a purpose for our reject specials ops Hero to fight. (Boo Hoo, his mom dies, it should have been his father)Which brings me to # 1 1. KILL OFF THE HOFF. I was hoping and expecting the "Father-Son reveal" to play out as a wealthy, yet dying Michael Knight, calling his son to bedside to pass long the legacy, in a scene similiar to the original pilot, when Michael Knight was brought to the Deathbed of the founder to recieve the "One man can make a difference speech" Instead we got a scene not far from Hasselhoffs cameo in Jamie Kennedy's "Kick'n It Old School" Yes Hoffy, you will LIVE FOREVER.

Also confirmed is the return of David Hasselhoff in the role of an elder Michael Knight. Finally, the character we care about most, KITT, has been officially confirmed as a Ford GT500KR."

This was on December 12, which is about three months ago like Gotham_Knight was saying. They said the show will debut as a two hour movie, which was the pilot. Everybody knew it was going to be a new show. Nobody was under the impression it was just a standalone pilot and thats that. How is it news now that NBC has announced they are making this? It seems this was already announced. The talkback heading NBC IS MAKING ANOTHER KNIGHT RIDER SERIES is a bit misleading. It makes it sound like its an entirely new series altogether.

The Ethan Embry/Ed O'neill show has limitless possibilities until they screwed it up with the "LA Dragnet" expanded cast crap. I'd support reviving it on FX, with just Embry and O'neill again. True dat, yo.

This was a no brainer that it would go to series because all us fanboys tuned into the tv movie to check it out. Unfortunately it was a steaming pile. I mean, I think the majority of us can be honest and say the TV movie was a huge dissappointment. So now we get to see another of our beloved childhood icons shit on and get cancelled after 5 or 6 eps are aired. Yee Haw! Can't wait for the NEW BJ and the Bear...Maybe this time they'll use a real bear to make it edgier!

If you read ANYTHING about the Knight Rider movie, it's consistently described as a BACKDOOR PILOT, which means that an ongoing series is a POSSIBILITY, not greenlit. A full series was not a sure thing until this past goddamn week. Shut the fuck up already. YOU'RE WRONG.

"We've already talked a bit about the new "Knight Rider" TV show, but we've got a new detail from Variety magazine. According to the magazine all about having a great plethora of stuff, NBC's tapped Doug Liman to produce the new "Knight Rider" TV show. Liman's recent executive production exploits have included "The Bourne Ultimatum" as well as Fox's "Arrested Development." But what's reall interesting is Liman's being tapped to produce a "Transformers"-inspired reworking of the 1980s hit action-drama series."

This was printed on same lame car customizing website called www.jalopnik.com on OCTOBER 1st of last year. So yeah-- absolutely nobody in the world knew this would be turned into a show not even the folks at jalopnik who apparently have the hot t.v. scoop these days.

was that they took everything that was cool and funny and interesting and iconic about the Carl Kolchak character and turn it into an angsty brooding 30 somthing trying to ook like a rock star we've seen before and too many times. He came off like Frankstein's monster patchwork of network approved cliche's and I can only hope his creation was the product of exectutuive level pressure and not the original intent of Spotnitz. Muldr was a far closer approximation of the original Kolchak and a far better character. There are some things you on;t get away with fucking up. Kolckak is broading. Comlumbo should not be played as 20 or wearing Armani. Rumpole is not an American John Grisham novel idealist with a romantic love interest. He's an old witty curmodeon and cynic who refers to his wife as She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed. Monk is not swave. I'm not asking for perfection but if you're gonna tackle and icon at least get it in the ball park.

Then this will be "Must Avoid TV" because it was atrocious. It might be good in a "invite your friends over, and MST3K the hell out of it" way, but not as a serious action-adventure show.

So far, the best SciFi and Action shows on television are BSG, Doctor Who, Torchwood (which has shaped up and is really great now), Terminator The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and I'm hoping the Star Wars offerings are decent as well... But this new Knight Rider? Crap.

Be happy it wasn't done in the past couple year, or Kolchak would have been a young 20-something who speaks in that annoying hip bantering that's so popular with the Veronica Mars/Buffy the Insipid Waste of Time kids.

The problem is that the networks and studios have all decided that it's no longer possible to have an appealing character over the age of 30. Expect to see your action heroes and dramatic leads get younger and younger, until 22 years old is considered out of the range of demographic appeal.

We'd never get a Kolchak in his 40s or 50s these days, unless it was on CBS and tailored for the geriatric crowd who watched Murder She Wrote and Mayberry Attorney (or whatever the fuck that show was called).

I mean the pilot was not even decent... KITT as a mustang, yeah well ok, but listening to the girl for the whole trip about her father and family tribulations, I would've ejected her right out...

I would be more into it if GM would give them the new Camaro that's supposed to come out in the next year or so. At least the Firebird was built on the same frame so would have a tie-in to the original I guess.

But the casting, and the script-writers, they all have to go.

Was reeeeaaallly shitty acting and storyline.

Yet it did play off the 80's cheesy concept.

My best part was when two bad guy have the girl and tell her she's about to be killed blah blah blah, and then a car rolls in and both bad guy, who were really hell bent on killing her, just let go of her.. I mean the car didn't even scratch one of them, not even close to a feet from them and they just go "Oh no! a black car... We can't hold her now!"... Now that was 80's cheese factory!

A car is just a car, I think people could get used to it, but you need an actual storyline. Even the 80's show had more depth than this new pilot.

Hell they had a Firebird right in there in a garage and didn't even use it!??!?! WTF!!!...

And the whole car/chameleon thing, and the fact that the car isn't as tough as the original KITT so they have to make it as a self-reconstructive repair shop all in one just makes it "bleh!", how can it get damaged by a bullet when an 80's version of the damn thing was actually stronger, this one looks like a tank, but isn't so it repairs itself... that's bad thinking right there.

The Hoff's cameo was the high point and it was so freaking stupid that I laugh for 20 minutes after it had passed... "Hi, I'm your father, the guy you never met, the guy who did up your mom and just walked away because, well, I had to drive a car. So, she's dead hey... That's too bad, she was a good person, and lay... Well, I gotta go so I'll be walking away into the big pond that's behind us instead of going to the road were I would've parked a car."

I mean just the fact that he walked away into the pond's direction made me laugh.. I thought "Where the hell is he going?!?! To take a swim??" And if they're was ONE spot were the original KITT could've been used, it was right there. I would've made him walk up to the little cemetery road and there you see it, KITT opening the door for him, he gets in and drives away. Cheesy YES, but if you're to show us the original "characters" of the show you have to show both MAIN characters, the man and the car.

The whole pilot was awful, I'm guessing the series will be as bad if they don't get actual writers and at least 2 good main actors for the revamp, otherwise I can see a whole new Bionic Woman déjà-vu, bad casting, bad writing equals bad show, equals get cancelled within 10 episodes.

Good luck with that.

See I missed that it was just a TV movie. I can't say it was great, but I thought "well, maybe as a pilot for a TV show, there could be something here." Of course I find the original show to be unwatchable, so probably I'm not going to be into a new show anyway. I'd rather see a revival of Farscape. Yeah, I'm THAT guy. Ha.

except for the car/chameleon thing.

I think the self-repair is an improvement over the composite armour from the first one - someone could always armour a bigger, heavier vehicle (like, say, a truck?) and smash your nicely armoured car to pieces - whereas a self repair means smashed or not, it's all good - and you can make your material as flexible as you like, instead of rigid like armour usually is...

also - I said this before - but making it a Mustang works from the chameleon angle - TWICE in that pilot - because every second car on the road in America is a Mustang, whereas a yet-to-be-released model Camaro or whatever from GM is gonna stick out like dog's balls - no matter what colour you make it...

Really my only BIG problem with this pilot was TOO MANY CHARACTERS! Everything else I could forgive - actually I take that back - I never want to hear that AWFUL AWFUL Nu-Metal theme song EVER AGAIN!!

But apart from that I just think they tried too hard to get an ensemble cast in on this. All we needed was the guy and the car. Piss the girl off. ONE bad guy is enough - ok maybe two - the Asian guy was alright and it's ok to have another bad guy to play off, but the geek bad guy and the head bad guy should have been the SAME GUY and same goes for the black guy and the Asian guy...

I guess you need Bruce Davison for the Foundation angle - and he's a good actor anyways - but PISS OFF that FBI shit! Don't need no LAW ENFORCEMENT types in a show about catching crooks who operate ABOVE THE LAW, right??

The sidekick - what the fuck was that all about? Who the fuck decided we needed to have a sidekick??

Just stick with the kid, the car, and Bruce Davison - that's all you need. Oh, and the kid's evil twin with a goatee beard ;-)

Hey Douchebags just accept it
