Timing is better. They cut out the stupid line when he swings into the truck. That actually looked like a preview for a movie I want to see that might live up to the joy of Raiders of the Lost Ark rather than a not-very-promising sequel to the abysmal Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. If Lucas weren't involved this would be my top for the summer. With him involved it doesn't even make top five.

10:40:18 PM
The poster gives me chills out of nostalgia. The first preview made me choke on memories of something I hate. See - I love Raiders, like a lot of Temple of Doom, and completely and utterly despise Last Crusade. The first cut of the preview made too many 'Last Crusade' bells go off in my head and, consequently, really dialed down my interest in the movie. This preview has me cautiously optimistic again, but far, far, far from excited.

11:12:07 PM
I want HIGHER rez, dagnabbit! 480 and 720 on the Indy site, but no love for 1080? Bah.

Shaw, Spielberg has been fighting since the start to have this shot on film and use practical effects wherever possible (which makes the lousy CG cliff fight even weirder). He's not going down easy. I'd love to be ther for the fights with Lucas!

And MCVkalel, where was the "overuse" beside the crappy overhead of the trucks? If you're talking the following reaction shots, that's just obvious rear-projection (whether or not it was done with blue/greenscreen) and is entirely in keeping with both the old Indy films and the old films they were based on. I actually like the effects in the warehouse with Indy swinging because bar the initial shot (which even there had an appropriate cg whip) you can see it's Harrison instead of going to the obvious rear or silhouetted shot of a stuntie. The flow and angles of the shots fit with the main-unit-type stuff.

I think bias either way is moronic. If you can use old school effects to achieve your goal, brilliant. If CG makes more sense, go for it. Grizzled stick-in-the-muds and idiot fanboys, and likewise technogeeks are all as stupid as each other when it comes to their warped points of view and failure to look at the problem from all sides, practical AND creative. How can you trust someone with no objectivity?

Fingers crossed hard for this one! Sorry for the rant, had to vent (why we love the site).

Last Great Spielberg Flick?
by ed2ward
Mar 29th, 2008

Probably 'Catch Me If You Can'. Before that 'Saving Private Ryan'. Last FLAWLESS movie was 'Empire of the Sun'. Minority Report was pretty danged good. Even A.I. and War of the Worlds had some fantastic elements for all of their flaws. Closest thing to an utterly worthless movie by Spielberg I've ever seen is 'Last Crusade'. Worst element in his filmography in my opinion. Partially because it's just honestly that bad, and partially because it takes a giant dump on one of my favorite films of all time (Raiders).

by I Dunno
Mar 29th, 2008
11:44:27 PM
but "money grab" in the context that these people are talking about is crassly going through the motions to make a movie they know will make a buck with no real love for what they're doing and that's not the vibe I'm getting here. If that were the case, this movie would have been made 15 years ago and there's probably be at least 2 more since then and everyone would be a lot richer than they are. Instead it took 10 years to find a script they all liked and they genuinely seem enthusiastic about the project. But continue with your negative opinions everyone, that seems to be all you're capable of anyway.

by Rupee88
Mar 29th, 2008
11:45:13 PM
you are a retard. A "money grab" is about motive and priorities and lack of passion and artistic goals. Of course most movies suck and are just made for a quick buck. Some are made for nobler reasons and this is not one of those. And Spielberg peaked with ET and it has been a long slide since then...punctuated with some great stuff but still downhill. Lucas peaked in '77 (obviously).
It's the music...
by viola123
Mar 29th, 2008

It was a good trailer/teaser, but I think it's the music that makes it. I think also, because we've seen the first trailer, some of the missing pieces are still "there," like when Indiana is swinging back into the truck. I might watch this.

we get to see greatness as a result. If it's made by a studio, it's a money grab. Not a damned thing wrong with it. You wanna see huge exploding mechanical spiders and gigantic crowds slipping off the deck of a giant ship.. guess what? Someone is gonna get paid. And what the other guy said was right, too. These guys aren't getting any younger, and they can't be much richer. They did this one because they love it AND they knew it would be a success. Both damned good reasons to make a flick. If it's not clear to anyone yet that Spielberg makes films because he loves films, go watch Munich again, or Empire of the Sun. Do you think anyone, at any point, thought those two would be blockbusters? No. But they knew they'd make their money back and a little more. If they didn't think that, those films would not exist and we'd be watching ET 3 by now or Close Encounters of the 6th Kind:The Rapture(DTV).

The one problem I originally had with the first trailer was when Indy was swinging FORWARD and then they suddenly cut to him swinging back... followed by him crashing into the cab of the truck (and saying that much loved one liner).

BUT NOW, after watching this one I see that when he was swinging forward, he timed it wrong, he then lost momentum as his target drove away, and was forced backwards into that truck! I GET that scene now and I GET that line "Damn I thought that was closer". Am I the only one who missed this? I just thought it was a weird cut from one action swing to a totally different other one going the other direction. it's all one seamless sequence and thus plays pretty well.

Conspiracy... Lucas is not the head writer
by moto
Mar 30th, 2008

He came up with the concept outline. One that had about four major writers take a lick at it before the final version was written and agreed upon by Ford, Spielberg, and Lucas.

Which is to say that yeah, he came up with the overall concept of the story, but the various plot points, pacing, structure, and dialog are handled by the screenwriter.

I don't get it. I mean...if these trailers were any good I would watch them and just fall in love with what I see. (You normally don't get a chance to replay a tv-spot a tousand times - until you like it) Instead, yet again, I watch this shit and just get scared that the footage on May 22nd will be as painful to watch as the stuff in the trailer. This new bit in the beginning is obviously two (or three) scenes edited together, and I've got the feeling that they originally are much funnier than that really weird looking little sequence in the tv-spot.

And I still believe that the first trailer was too action packed. Maybe it has to be this way not to give anything away, what the fuck do I know.. It's good not to see the "Damn. Thought that was closer." anywhere around this time though.

THESE ARE THE FACTS - CGI looks better than any other effect techinque, period! If a reuirement for the movie cannot be staged or built then just like in the old days the film makers use SFX and since nothing can recreate reality as well as CGI then expect it to be used. We are living in a high definition world ladies 720 & 1080p exposes special FX pretty badly when they are old school matte paintings, models and animatronics. The photo realism of CGI and its ability to generate images with high resolution so they hold up when composed with live action is simply incomparable. The old Indy films used a lot of old style glass matte paintings, these were always a still & 2 dimensional. You simply can't go back to doing that when you have the ability to create lifelike 3D CGI mattes. There are times we old folk simply have to leave nostalgia for old effects back where they belong and realize the world moves forward not backward. There is no such thing of an overuse of CGI, these are FX movies and if there is an FX technique that can do the job better than CGI then they'd use it.

but I just don't see how this can be bad...

I know there might be a few moments where you roll your eyes, but all in all, this isn't a bastardized reboot just for the money like some franchises have done. it's the original people making a new installment just because they really love these characters and these stories. and it's gonna be an Indiana Jones movie, with all the fun shit that comes with that. honestly, one of you haters, list for me all the things you think could go wrong with this?

does Cate Blanchett EVER do anything wrong? Shia, for all the hate he gets in the talkbacks, is at the VERY least passable. and I think he was the only thing that made me chuckle in Transformers (see my review on here for how much I thought it sucked cucumbers), Harrison is old, but you know they'll riff on it, and he can still swing a whip, Marion is back, cliff chase sequences, Indy musical scores...it's all there!

this is one instance where it's all done right, and we should get ready with our 9 bucks and make it the blockbuster it should be. if not, then what good is it having these exciting memories from childhood? as they systematically butcher every important and meaningful intellectual property from when you were a kid, and your imagination was running wild, isn't it all the more important to support someone doing it right?

this is Indiana Fucking Jones, at your service, and he's got my money on opening night...

and I'll tip my hat to all you hating sumbitches waiting in line, still grumbling, as I make my way with my mental boner right to the 15th row, dead center. you know you're gonna be there anyway. you just like to hate. like the old people complaining about everything at the early bird special. you're still there. you still pay, you still eat, you still get dressed up. shut up and enjoy your garlic mashed potatoes. I know I'm enjoying mine...

seriously, there isnt any magic in movie making anymore. I mean think of how artistic and creative they had to be back then to pull out effects. I think practical effects beat cgi every time. Why are they fucking using cgi now in indy, it makes it look like every other movie out there now a days. It frankly looks like national treasue 3 than indy jones.

Sound criticism is one thing, but the arguments coming from mouth-breathers like Rupee88 is simply cheap, cynical, baseless garbage designed to - dare I say it? - cash in on online controversy. They hope to increase their AICN talkback cred by stating something "bold" and "incisive" and "clever", such as:

I agree that there is an overly cynical mentality with some talkbackers, and that it is meant to separate them from the rest, but only makes them seem like a douche. But at the same time, what is just as annoying are the ones who cream their shorts at anything and everything simply because they are suffering from a lifetime case of blueballs. So one extreme is meant to counterbalance the other. When things even out in the middle, talkbacks will become a more pleasant place.

I don't believe for one minute that asstards like Rupee88 are trying to "counterbalance" anything. They're far too self-centered for that.

I still contend that at this stage being enthusiastic (even cautiously) about the project speaks volumes about a person just as much as someone who is a hater. The enthusiasts generally have more substance to their arguments while the haters seem to be pulling things out of their asses.

(Yes, I said "A.I.", one of the most woefully undervalued films of the last decade - an incredibly moving piece of ART).

Again, may all you haters and cynical pieces of crud who accomplish zilch in this life choke on a gargantuan tankard of taint sweat.

Geek Rumble
by Mister Man
Mar 30th, 2008
08:37:01 AM
Geeks seem to settle for being one, of two, extremes - Angry Geek and Gushing Geek. Then, there's that minority of Middle Geek. I'm not sure which is worse/better. Well, actually, yes I am. I happened to be in Austin at the time of "The Mist" screening. I was forced to stand in line for 90 minutes, and it was definitely a Gushing Geek crowd. It was excruciating. The wringing of hands, the giggling, the pitiful proclamations of what "Frank" or "Stephen" has thought/said/done. After five minutes, my non-industry friend inquired, "Aren't these the people we targeted with the "dodge" ball, in gym class?" While I was happy to have some quiet time for two hours, while the movie ran (hated it, by the way), the dreaded Q&A soon followed. "Volcanic" gushing can only describe the response from most of the crowd. I think half of the audience wanted to climb on stage, and give Darabont a BJ. I would have killed, to experience some Angry Geek interaction. It would have neutralized the ickiness. However, I assume most Angry Geeks hide behind their computer screens. I, for one, would pay to see a Geek Rumble. Put 'em in the ring with their UnderRoos and plastic light sabers, and let 'em slap each other down. But have a security screening at the door - we know the results when some Angry Geeks get their sweaty little hands on a gun.

Nice to see that the old people are getting a comeback in action-cinema, (rambo 4, Dirty Harry, Indiana Jones), but I have to say that I have one single reservation about spielberg; He doesn`t know how to end a movie. I have never been so pissed as when i saw the ending of Munich, Eric Bana shaking his head while screwing his wife with drops of sweat flying towards the camera in slomo, intercut with the olympic team getting shot and way over the top dramatic music. BAD CINEMA! Or Minority Repport who keeps going on forever and ever. The guy has talent and made some of the greatest movies of the `70 and `80, but the last 15 years he has dropped the ball every single time he was one the right track. The ending of private Ryan? There is a big difference between film criticism and being an AICN talkbacker. What 95% of you do on these boards is not criticism. You show yourselves incapable of making intellectual remarks any time you use the term "fucktard".

It amazes me how many people come to this site to trash movies. To me, movies are there to enjoy. So many of you just seem to WANT to be unhappy. OK, I get it - the Prequels weren't the second comming like everyone hoped... get fucking over it. They were still damn entertaining movies and Indy 4 will also be entertaining. Isn't that why we go to the movies? If you are going to this movie to be jaded and bitter - I think I speak for everyone when I say - Stay the Fuck HOME.

And for Gods sakes, lets stop bashing a movie that none of us has seen. We've gotten about 90 seconds of footage, and about 10 stills. It's not enough to judge the entire film. A new Indy movie comes out in less than 2 months and it will almost all be un-spoiled by 8 different trailers over the last 10 months. Star Trek anyone? We already ahve a teaser for a film that is more than a year away.

And for one, I will trust Speilberg and Lucas with my movie money over damn near anyone else. And here's 10 reasons why...

Jaws
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Star Wars
The Empire Strikes Back
E.T.
Raiders of the Lost Ark
American Graffiti
Jurassic Park
Empire of the Sun
Schindler's List
Saving Private Ryan

And I could add 30 other great films that were directed and produced by these two guys. You might not like everything they have done, but they have been more consistent than nearly any other film makers in the history of cinema.

Show some respect. If they want to have some fun with a character they love - sit back with your popcorn... watch the movie... and shut up!

Think about what sucked about the first trailer. "Damn I thought that was closer." Light-hearted, "humorous" one-liners, that are suppossed to lighten the mood on what is suppossed to be a dire situation. I think it was something that worked extremely well in the 80s and was always delivered extremely well by harrison ford. Well here we are in 2008 and I can't even remember the last time I felt comfortable listening to a "humorous" one-liner in an action or adventure or even scifi movie. One-liners have absolutely ruined some movies for me. For me it was probably transformers. There are countless others including anything with will smith and anything with ahnold post terminator 2. Maybe we don't need those cheesy one-liners anymore.. it doesnt make me laugh and only takes me out of the movie. I feel like the minority when i say this considering how many people loved transformers and most will smith movies. Anyone else feel like I do?

Even the movies you listed have moments of greatness in them. Try watching any of those films then watch The Mummy remake.

However, I will agree The Lost World has one of the worst moments in Spielberg cinematic history - Gymnastic girl saves the day. That was bad.

I have my fingers crossed too - I just hate that people judge movies before seeing them. It seems people want to convince themselves this movie will suck so they are pleasantly surprised if and when it doesn't.

It`s about 12 year-old kid in the surburbs who becomes friends with a strange little girl, who lives with a pedophile mass-murderer. It`s one of the most beatiful "childrens" movies I`ve ever seen and has some of the coolest gore-scenes ever. Knowles gonna rave about it at the end of the year. Minority Report would have been a lot better if the running time was cut down. The 'Berg didn't really know what kind of movie he was aiming for with Minority Report OR A.I. Maybe A.I. is a masterpiece of weirdness. Private Ryan was also overlong. Same goes for The Lost World, which needed the Rex-in-San-Diego part like a hole in the head (either that or we should have had 2 hours of solid dinos-in-America action! Just stop making these tacked on final acts!!). War Of The Worlds went the other way, it was too short!!! A couple of excellent set pieces don't make up for how lame the movie is from the part where they're in Time Robbins's basement onwards. Cruise's son going missing and then miraculously appearing at the end in the magical land of Boston where no aliens go was so SO bad.

It's the one name that hasn't been mentioned yet in this talk back. David Koepp. Call me a cynical whiny talk backer if you want, but the man has proven he can drag down even a film maker as gifted as Spielberg. And Spielberg, unfortunately, while he's still got a sharp cinematic sensibility, does not always have good judgment in scripts. I know WOTW has it's supporters but there's no way it and the Jurassic Park films can hold a candle to Jaws, Close Encounters, Raiders, et. al. Koepp's involvement can only be seen as a bad omen for this film. He's a cookie cutter Syd Field devotee, he's an illustration of what's wrong with Hollywood.

A true fanboy can see the faults as well as the greatness, and doesn't shy away from speaking the truth. Spielberg is awesome but this injection of Mutt may turn out badly. So far that appears to be the case. Otherwise I wouldn't even have a prob with CGI or bad lines. I still love Indy.

Since this is supposed to be a site about film discussion rather than name calling...

I just watched No Country For Old Men last night, and while this has nothing to do with Indy, it does have something to do with endings that don't live up to the rest of the movie. This was our "best picture" film this year, and I loved most of it, but was disapointed by the ending.

I agree that Spielberg's endings haven't paid off in his last few films, and I think that's one reason people are still sceptical about this Indy film.

Am I alone in being let down by NCFOM ending? I mean, I understand the ending, I just didn't feel the payoff for the rest of an awesome movie.

What films in the past few years had a truly great ending like Raiders of The Loast Ark, or Close Encounters? Good endings seem few and far between in these days of remakes and sequels.

Yeah, some deep hidden truths of this 20+ year old film franchise were about to be revealed, some profound connection to the font of all human experience, a linguistic dip into the collective unconcious, our psychic gene-pool. No really, I'm sure that we were about to launch into some serious film criticism and discourse, cause you now, AICN has always been about scholarly discourse on the art of cinema. didn`t really like the ending when i walked out of the cineme, but it grew on me the following days. I don`t know if it`s a great ending on it`s own, but it took the fairly typical noir-plot in the movie to another level and made it a "bigger" story, so in a way it`s a great ending. It keeps the movie alive in your head and i like that. Maybe because there is no pay-off? It makes the movie extremely nihilistic and is a point in itself? I thought the ending to Lust, Caution was truly heartbreaking too, very sad and very beatiful. And Death Proof had a genius ending. But i think it`s almost impossible to find a really good ending in a genre-film these days, it`s always about sfx, never good storytelling. Oh, the swedish vampiremovie i rambled on about "Let the right one in" has a truly great horror-ending!

Hey Rando, You're definitely not alone, a lot of fans and critics disliked the end of No Country. I actually liked it, and for what it's worth to you(which might nothing) it's pretty much 100% faithful to the ending of the novel. The worst the Coen Bros. could be accused of is not tinkering with the source material to provide a more cinematic ending... but you know how that goes, if they had, there would certainly be criticism for giving it a "hollywood ending" and from those who loved the source.

I sympathize with those who were let down by the ending to NCFOM. But I happen to be a huge McCarthy fan and occassionaly find myself defending the story's conclusion and the Coen Bros.'s amazing depiction of it. I can only stress that it's really Bell's story (IMHO). Not Moss's...not Chigurh's. The seemingly more random and ruthless tide of violence, that he sees as the future, serves the basis for his opening narration and closing dream. The world (represented by Chigurh - random, evil, etc.) is so uncompromising, that it even robs us of the final showdown we all thought was coming. Bell's final scenes are crucial to this view and I found it to be an incredibly brave statement and ending.

I do understand your sentiments. And I agree - a great ending is hard to come by these days. Cheers!

This is serious fucking business! As serious as when, say, Jar Jar entered our lives and let us know that "you know what? You are too old to like this stuff and nostalgia really only goes so far to maintain that feeling of a bygone, daydreamy youth." So, with that in mind, let us all bow our heads, in proper mute solemnity, and ponder the deeper meaning of the whip crack, the smirk, the bygone era of 80s blockbusters; long may that golden age of cinema blind us with its brilliance, its subtlety, its coked out self-assuredness as mother and father, too strung out to care, first began to distance themselves from the ugly effort of parenting altogether, preferring to let the screen do it for them. Why has this site mentioned that starting tomorrow the Starz cable channel will start airing the American theatrical version of Grindhouse?

Why is this a big deal?
1. Because this is the version that isn't available on DVD...each segment is linked by the fake trailers (which aren't on the DVD!) exactly as it was shown in American cinemas back in April '07.
2. Starz also broadcasts in HD...so you also get the kick ass picture quality!

A few weeks ago Starz was also playing the extended versions of the two films.

And I will say for the ending to NCFOM - it does make you wonder what happened. Some of it just came so abruptly. But I will give it a few days to sink in, then watch it again. There are some truly great scenes in the film.

And Death Proof ending was absolutely fantastic. That was the forst time in a VERY long time that I heard people cheering in the theater.

In other words, they wanted Indy to rape more women and disembowel more people.

of most Last Crusade haters. I'm not saying that Last Crusade doesn't have its weak points, because it does. The use of the Holy Grail and the Nazis are too reminiscent of Raiders. I actually like it better than Temple of Doom if only because Kate Capshaw is damn near unwatchable. I also secretly believe that Spielberg was channeling those old Bob Hope Road movies, and seen through that light I really enjoy Crusade. Neither film is as good as Raiders, but both are worthy sequels.

I was basically talking about those who pretend Last Crusade is a cinematic travesty and try to make themselves feel better by tearing something else down.

That shot looks good, and its obvious to me now, from finally watching this TV spot, that those of you decrying the "bad CGI" in the cliff chase scene just like to hear the sound of your own voice complaining, or in this case, read your own words bitching.
