Timing is better. They cut out the stupid line when he swings into the truck. That actually looked like a preview for a movie I want to see that might live up to the joy of Raiders of the Lost Ark rather than a not-very-promising sequel to the abysmal Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. If Lucas weren't involved this would be my top for the summer. With him involved it doesn't even make top five.

The poster gives me chills out of nostalgia. The first preview made me choke on memories of something I hate. See - I love Raiders, like a lot of Temple of Doom, and completely and utterly despise Last Crusade. The first cut of the preview made too many 'Last Crusade' bells go off in my head and, consequently, really dialed down my interest in the movie. This preview has me cautiously optimistic again, but far, far, far from excited.

11:12:07 PM
I want HIGHER rez, dagnabbit! 480 and 720 on the Indy site, but no love for 1080? Bah.

Shaw, Spielberg has been fighting since the start to have this shot on film and use practical effects wherever possible (which makes the lousy CG cliff fight even weirder). He's not going down easy. I'd love to be ther for the fights with Lucas!

And MCVkalel, where was the "overuse" beside the crappy overhead of the trucks? If you're talking the following reaction shots, that's just obvious rear-projection (whether or not it was done with blue/greenscreen) and is entirely in keeping with both the old Indy films and the old films they were based on. I actually like the effects in the warehouse with Indy swinging because bar the initial shot (which even there had an appropriate cg whip) you can see it's Harrison instead of going to the obvious rear or silhouetted shot of a stuntie. The flow and angles of the shots fit with the main-unit-type stuff.

I think bias either way is moronic. If you can use old school effects to achieve your goal, brilliant. If CG makes more sense, go for it. Grizzled stick-in-the-muds and idiot fanboys, and likewise technogeeks are all as stupid as each other when it comes to their warped points of view and failure to look at the problem from all sides, practical AND creative. How can you trust someone with no objectivity?

Fingers crossed hard for this one! Sorry for the rant, had to vent (why we love the site).

Last Great Spielberg Flick?

Probably 'Catch Me If You Can'. Before that 'Saving Private Ryan'. Last FLAWLESS movie was 'Empire of the Sun'. Minority Report was pretty danged good. Even A.I. and War of the Worlds had some fantastic elements for all of their flaws. Closest thing to an utterly worthless movie by Spielberg I've ever seen is 'Last Crusade'. Worst element in his filmography in my opinion. Partially because it's just honestly that bad, and partially because it takes a giant dump on one of my favorite films of all time (Raiders).

Mar 29th, 2008
11:44:27 PM
but "money grab" in the context that these people are talking about is crassly going through the motions to make a movie they know will make a buck with no real love for what they're doing and that's not the vibe I'm getting here. If that were the case, this movie would have been made 15 years ago and there's probably be at least 2 more since then and everyone would be a lot richer than they are. Instead it took 10 years to find a script they all liked and they genuinely seem enthusiastic about the project. But continue with your negative opinions everyone, that seems to be all you're capable of anyway.

you are a retard. A "money grab" is about motive and priorities and lack of passion and artistic goals. Of course most movies suck and are just made for a quick buck. Some are made for nobler reasons and this is not one of those. And Spielberg peaked with ET and it has been a long slide since then...punctuated with some great stuff but still downhill. Lucas peaked in '77 (obviously).

we get to see greatness as a result. If it's made by a studio, it's a money grab. Not a damned thing wrong with it. You wanna see huge exploding mechanical spiders and gigantic crowds slipping off the deck of a giant ship.. guess what? Someone is gonna get paid. And what the other guy said was right, too. These guys aren't getting any younger, and they can't be much richer. They did this one because they love it AND they knew it would be a success. Both damned good reasons to make a flick. If it's not clear to anyone yet that Spielberg makes films because he loves films, go watch Munich again, or Empire of the Sun. Do you think anyone, at any point, thought those two would be blockbusters? No. But they knew they'd make their money back and a little more. If they didn't think that, those films would not exist and we'd be watching ET 3 by now or Close Encounters of the 6th Kind:The Rapture(DTV).

The one problem I originally had with the first trailer was when Indy was swinging FORWARD and then they suddenly cut to him swinging back... followed by him crashing into the cab of the truck (and saying that much loved one liner).

BUT NOW, after watching this one I see that when he was swinging forward, he timed it wrong, he then lost momentum as his target drove away, and was forced backwards into that truck! I GET that scene now and I GET that line "Damn I thought that was closer". Am I the only one who missed this? I just thought it was a weird cut from one action swing to a totally different other one going the other direction. it's all one seamless sequence and thus plays pretty well.

Conspiracy... Lucas is not the head writer

He came up with the concept outline. One that had about four major writers take a lick at it before the final version was written and agreed upon by Ford, Spielberg, and Lucas.

Which is to say that yeah, he came up with the overall concept of the story, but the various plot points, pacing, structure, and dialog are handled by the screenwriter.

I don't get it. I mean...if these trailers were any good I would watch them and just fall in love with what I see. (You normally don't get a chance to replay a tv-spot a tousand times - until you like it) Instead, yet again, I watch this shit and just get scared that the footage on May 22nd will be as painful to watch as the stuff in the trailer. This new bit in the beginning is obviously two (or three) scenes edited together, and I've got the feeling that they originally are much funnier than that really weird looking little sequence in the tv-spot.

And I still believe that the first trailer was too action packed. Maybe it has to be this way not to give anything away, what the fuck do I know.. It's good not to see the "Damn. Thought that was closer." anywhere around this time though.

THESE ARE THE FACTS - CGI looks better than any other effect techinque, period! If a reuirement for the movie cannot be staged or built then just like in the old days the film makers use SFX and since nothing can recreate reality as well as CGI then expect it to be used. We are living in a high definition world ladies 720 & 1080p exposes special FX pretty badly when they are old school matte paintings, models and animatronics. The photo realism of CGI and its ability to generate images with high resolution so they hold up when composed with live action is simply incomparable. The old Indy films used a lot of old style glass matte paintings, these were always a still & 2 dimensional. You simply can't go back to doing that when you have the ability to create lifelike 3D CGI mattes. There are times we old folk simply have to leave nostalgia for old effects back where they belong and realize the world moves forward not backward. There is no such thing of an overuse of CGI, these are FX movies and if there is an FX technique that can do the job better than CGI then they'd use it.

but I just don't see how this can be bad...

I know there might be a few moments where you roll your eyes, but all in all, this isn't a bastardized reboot just for the money like some franchises have done. it's the original people making a new installment just because they really love these characters and these stories. and it's gonna be an Indiana Jones movie, with all the fun shit that comes with that. honestly, one of you haters, list for me all the things you think could go wrong with this?

does Cate Blanchett EVER do anything wrong? Shia, for all the hate he gets in the talkbacks, is at the VERY least passable. and I think he was the only thing that made me chuckle in Transformers (see my review on here for how much I thought it sucked cucumbers), Harrison is old, but you know they'll riff on it, and he can still swing a whip, Marion is back, cliff chase sequences, Indy musical scores...it's all there!

this is one instance where it's all done right, and we should get ready with our 9 bucks and make it the blockbuster it should be. if not, then what good is it having these exciting memories from childhood? as they systematically butcher every important and meaningful intellectual property from when you were a kid, and your imagination was running wild, isn't it all the more important to support someone doing it right?

this is Indiana Fucking Jones, at your service, and he's got my money on opening night...

and I'll tip my hat to all you hating sumbitches waiting in line, still grumbling, as I make my way with my mental boner right to the 15th row, dead center. you know you're gonna be there anyway. you just like to hate. like the old people complaining about everything at the early bird special. you're still there. you still pay, you still eat, you still get dressed up. shut up and enjoy your garlic mashed potatoes. I know I'm enjoying mine...

Sound criticism is one thing, but the arguments coming from mouth-breathers like Rupee88 is simply cheap, cynical, baseless garbage designed to - dare I say it? - cash in on online controversy. They hope to increase their AICN talkback cred by stating something "bold" and "incisive" and "clever", such as:

"Spielberg peaked with E.T."

Seriously, just shut the fuck up. You're nothing but a bunch of joyless, cinephobic, maladjusted assholes.

I agree that there is an overly cynical mentality with some talkbackers, and that it is meant to separate them from the rest, but only makes them seem like a douche. But at the same time, what is just as annoying are the ones who cream their shorts at anything and everything simply because they are suffering from a lifetime case of blueballs. So one extreme is meant to counterbalance the other. When things even out in the middle, talkbacks will become a more pleasant place.

I don't believe for one minute that asstards like Rupee88 are trying to "counterbalance" anything. They're far too self-centered for that.

I still contend that at this stage being enthusiastic (even cautiously) about the project speaks volumes about a person just as much as someone who is a hater. The enthusiasts generally have more substance to their arguments while the haters seem to be pulling things out of their asses.

Geeks seem to settle for being one, of two, extremes - Angry Geek and Gushing Geek. Then, there's that minority of Middle Geek. I'm not sure which is worse/better. Well, actually, yes I am. I happened to be in Austin at the time of "The Mist" screening. I was forced to stand in line for 90 minutes, and it was definitely a Gushing Geek crowd. It was excruciating. The wringing of hands, the giggling, the pitiful proclamations of what "Frank" or "Stephen" has thought/said/done. After five minutes, my non-industry friend inquired, "Aren't these the people we targeted with the "dodge" ball, in gym class?" While I was happy to have some quiet time for two hours, while the movie ran (hated it, by the way), the dreaded Q&A soon followed. "Volcanic" gushing can only describe the response from most of the crowd. I think half of the audience wanted to climb on stage, and give Darabont a BJ. I would have killed, to experience some Angry Geek interaction. It would have neutralized the ickiness. However, I assume most Angry Geeks hide behind their computer screens. I, for one, would pay to see a Geek Rumble. Put 'em in the ring with their UnderRoos and plastic light sabers, and let 'em slap each other down. But have a security screening at the door - we know the results when some Angry Geeks get their sweaty little hands on a gun.

There is a big difference between film criticism and being an AICN talkbacker. What 95% of you do on these boards is not criticism. You show yourselves incapable of making intellectual remarks any time you use the term "fucktard".

It amazes me how many people come to this site to trash movies. To me, movies are there to enjoy. So many of you just seem to WANT to be unhappy. OK, I get it - the Prequels weren't the second comming like everyone hoped... get fucking over it. They were still damn entertaining movies and Indy 4 will also be entertaining. Isn't that why we go to the movies? If you are going to this movie to be jaded and bitter - I think I speak for everyone when I say - Stay the Fuck HOME.

And for Gods sakes, lets stop bashing a movie that none of us has seen. We've gotten about 90 seconds of footage, and about 10 stills. It's not enough to judge the entire film. A new Indy movie comes out in less than 2 months and it will almost all be un-spoiled by 8 different trailers over the last 10 months. Star Trek anyone? We already ahve a teaser for a film that is more than a year away.

And for one, I will trust Speilberg and Lucas with my movie money over damn near anyone else. And here's 10 reasons why...

Jaws
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Star Wars
The Empire Strikes Back
E.T.
Raiders of the Lost Ark
American Graffiti
Jurassic Park
Empire of the Sun
Schindler's List
Saving Private Ryan

And I could add 30 other great films that were directed and produced by these two guys. You might not like everything they have done, but they have been more consistent than nearly any other film makers in the history of cinema.

Show some respect. If they want to have some fun with a character they love - sit back with your popcorn... watch the movie... and shut up!

Think about what sucked about the first trailer. "Damn I thought that was closer." Light-hearted, "humorous" one-liners, that are suppossed to lighten the mood on what is suppossed to be a dire situation. I think it was something that worked extremely well in the 80s and was always delivered extremely well by harrison ford. Well here we are in 2008 and I can't even remember the last time I felt comfortable listening to a "humorous" one-liner in an action or adventure or even scifi movie. One-liners have absolutely ruined some movies for me. For me it was probably transformers. There are countless others including anything with will smith and anything with ahnold post terminator 2. Maybe we don't need those cheesy one-liners anymore.. it doesnt make me laugh and only takes me out of the movie. I feel like the minority when i say this considering how many people loved transformers and most will smith movies. Anyone else feel like I do?

Even the movies you listed have moments of greatness in them. Try watching any of those films then watch The Mummy remake.

However, I will agree The Lost World has one of the worst moments in Spielberg cinematic history - Gymnastic girl saves the day. That was bad.

I have my fingers crossed too - I just hate that people judge movies before seeing them. It seems people want to convince themselves this movie will suck so they are pleasantly surprised if and when it doesn't.

Minority Report would have been a lot better if the running time was cut down. The 'Berg didn't really know what kind of movie he was aiming for with Minority Report OR A.I. Maybe A.I. is a masterpiece of weirdness. Private Ryan was also overlong. Same goes for The Lost World, which needed the Rex-in-San-Diego part like a hole in the head (either that or we should have had 2 hours of solid dinos-in-America action! Just stop making these tacked on final acts!!). War Of The Worlds went the other way, it was too short!!! A couple of excellent set pieces don't make up for how lame the movie is from the part where they're in Time Robbins's basement onwards. Cruise's son going missing and then miraculously appearing at the end in the magical land of Boston where no aliens go was so SO bad.

It's the one name that hasn't been mentioned yet in this talk back. David Koepp. Call me a cynical whiny talk backer if you want, but the man has proven he can drag down even a film maker as gifted as Spielberg. And Spielberg, unfortunately, while he's still got a sharp cinematic sensibility, does not always have good judgment in scripts. I know WOTW has it's supporters but there's no way it and the Jurassic Park films can hold a candle to Jaws, Close Encounters, Raiders, et. al. Koepp's involvement can only be seen as a bad omen for this film. He's a cookie cutter Syd Field devotee, he's an illustration of what's wrong with Hollywood.

Since this is supposed to be a site about film discussion rather than name calling...

I just watched No Country For Old Men last night, and while this has nothing to do with Indy, it does have something to do with endings that don't live up to the rest of the movie. This was our "best picture" film this year, and I loved most of it, but was disapointed by the ending.

I agree that Spielberg's endings haven't paid off in his last few films, and I think that's one reason people are still sceptical about this Indy film.

Am I alone in being let down by NCFOM ending? I mean, I understand the ending, I just didn't feel the payoff for the rest of an awesome movie.

What films in the past few years had a truly great ending like Raiders of The Loast Ark, or Close Encounters? Good endings seem few and far between in these days of remakes and sequels.

I sympathize with those who were let down by the ending to NCFOM. But I happen to be a huge McCarthy fan and occassionaly find myself defending the story's conclusion and the Coen Bros.'s amazing depiction of it. I can only stress that it's really Bell's story (IMHO). Not Moss's...not Chigurh's. The seemingly more random and ruthless tide of violence, that he sees as the future, serves the basis for his opening narration and closing dream. The world (represented by Chigurh - random, evil, etc.) is so uncompromising, that it even robs us of the final showdown we all thought was coming. Bell's final scenes are crucial to this view and I found it to be an incredibly brave statement and ending.

I do understand your sentiments. And I agree - a great ending is hard to come by these days. Cheers!

must be truly thought provoking. For which I apologize most sincerely for daring to poke fun and have a laugh. How dare I entertain myself (and a handful of others who apparently enjoy it too)! This is serious fucking business! As serious as when, say, Jar Jar entered our lives and let us know that "you know what? You are too old to like this stuff and nostalgia really only goes so far to maintain that feeling of a bygone, daydreamy youth." So, with that in mind, let us all bow our heads, in proper mute solemnity, and ponder the deeper meaning of the whip crack, the smirk, the bygone era of 80s blockbusters; long may that golden age of cinema blind us with its brilliance, its subtlety, its coked out self-assuredness as mother and father, too strung out to care, first began to distance themselves from the ugly effort of parenting altogether, preferring to let the screen do it for them. And, if I may add one more thing, WHY DOO EEED HAVE TO BE THE SNAKES?!?! GED DOO DAH CHAHPPAH! DOO EEED NOW!!!

American theatrical version of Grindhouse on Starz!

Why has this site mentioned that starting tomorrow the Starz cable channel will start airing the American theatrical version of Grindhouse?

Why is this a big deal?
1. Because this is the version that isn't available on DVD...each segment is linked by the fake trailers (which aren't on the DVD!) exactly as it was shown in American cinemas back in April '07.
2. Starz also broadcasts in HD...so you also get the kick ass picture quality!

A few weeks ago Starz was also playing the extended versions of the two films.

And I will say for the ending to NCFOM - it does make you wonder what happened. Some of it just came so abruptly. But I will give it a few days to sink in, then watch it again. There are some truly great scenes in the film.

And Death Proof ending was absolutely fantastic. That was the forst time in a VERY long time that I heard people cheering in the theater.

Will have to check out the Sweedish vampire flick. 30 Days of Night had a great setup, but fell to the same silly ending biz.

...(since most just throw epithets at it without explaining why it's a bad movie), but I think it has to do with watching the original Raiders as kids without realizing how tongue in cheek it actually was, and then growing up expecting the ultra-serious Indy film they expected when they were younger and discovering a film that has a little more humor than Raiders. In other words, they wanted Indy to rape more women and disembowel more people.

of most Last Crusade haters. I'm not saying that Last Crusade doesn't have its weak points, because it does. The use of the Holy Grail and the Nazis are too reminiscent of Raiders. I actually like it better than Temple of Doom if only because Kate Capshaw is damn near unwatchable. I also secretly believe that Spielberg was channeling those old Bob Hope Road movies, and seen through that light I really enjoy Crusade. Neither film is as good as Raiders, but both are worthy sequels.

I was basically talking about those who pretend Last Crusade is a cinematic travesty and try to make themselves feel better by tearing something else down.

Then you come along, whining, crying, complaining, offering nothing but a sad attempt at negative attention (which you received, so I guess you succeeded in that respect) like some neglected brat child with a crippling inferiority complex. So you go about your self-obsessed, self-martyrdom; bitterly, humorlessly, whining, bitching, moaning, running to papa-mod to back you up all to no avail, and I'm "the definition of being a little bitch?" Really, now. Am I? Oh Doc you are the king of irony; writhing and palpitating on your very own bed of nails, crown of thorns affixed squarely to a furrowed brow that NOBODY takes seriously, though you so desperately need to be. Thats your real pain right? Now feel free to fume and mope and whine and bitch and complain and weep into your cup of sorrows that only you seem to give a flying fuck about. The rest of us, the vast majority of us, will continue to do whatever the fuck we want despite your sad need to make that not the case. What a lonely, sad person you must be. There is something empty about it to me. It just feels empty. I can't explain it. The same way the 1st trailer did.

Those who are saying some of us are bitching and moaning can suck one. Lucas has had a shitty track record for years. Not to mention this is the same McGuffin that BOTH Speilberg and Ford rejected many times and suddenly felt it was great? No, the truth is the all mighty dollar and Ford's lackluster acting career in recent years is what motivated both to turn coat and embrace what they once thought to be a shitty idea from Lucas. This coming from Lucas himself that they both hated the idea in the past.

When you factor all those elements in it's really hard to get excited from my point of view.

I actually believe your intentions are sincere, but as is the case with Temple of Doom, Batman Returns, and Alien 3, I've lost interest in defending the PT. For all their flaws, I think they're among the most subversive "popcorn" movies released in decades, and feel the performances/dialogue from TPM and ROTS were no better or worse than what we got in the original film. What confounds me is how critics and general audiences could be far more receptive to ROTS than a cadre of genre fans. (Go to metacritic, and you'll see its score was just a few points below Batman Begins.) Something just doesn’t feel right, here.

I would like to add though that CGI matte "paintings" look infinitely better than 2 dimensional painted ones, the one exception being the last scene in Raiders in the warehouse.

And I've said this before but all Lucas did was write the outline of the story. Two more screen writers took over after that, yet if it sucks you'll blame him and it it rules you'll credit Spielberg. Because you're all dicks.

CGI and green screen has become the fast and lose bullshit way of getting shitloads of work done without actually having to put all the actual WORK into it. The systems and backdrops are already in place, all they ever need to do is drop in the elements and attach the physical parameters. Saves em 6 weeks of construction and 400 jobs, but the loss of quality and authenticity for filmmakers like Steven is irreperable. It simply looks lazy

Subversive? Oh jesus Christ. And acting wise Hayden Christensen is simply beneath contempt. He's an early contender for worst actor of his generation. His stilted delivery combined with his constantly cracking whiny voice makes for one of the most painful characterizations in big budget film history. And there is not a moment in Star Wars Episode 3 that you can name that I can't tear down to its very fabric. It's a horrendous film that makes the original trilogy worse when it's taken into context. Not to mention that George Lucas gets his own fucking story wrong. It's actually a WORSE film than the previous two prequels. The only reason people think it's better is because the plot is actually moved forward in Episode 3. They completely ignore that the plot points shown are butchered beyond reprieve. Anakins fall tot he dark side and the Jedi downfall are laughable cinematic jokes given absolutely no weight and glossed over in about 7 seconds. I know exactly why you are done defending the prequels, because you can't.

Is because they don't fucking care. Pauline Kael once described movies like Star Wars as "great trash" and that is what genre films have always been to critics. Mild diversions at best. Critics are as out of touch with genre filmmaking as the general american public is. When a film like Episode 3 puts on the cynical illusion of gravitas the critics simply don't give enough of a damn to take it on anything but it's word. They rate films like that on a different scale than artier fare and think "Oh whats the harm" if something like Episode 3 turns out to be a terrible film masquerading as Star Wars.

it sets up Anakins fall to the dark side as boiling down to a fucking premonition and a baseless belief in the power of the darkside to resurrect the dead. Which Lucas needed because he squandered the first two films instead of setting up a believeable foundation for Anakins dark beliefs. And when said premonition comes true, like Anaking is absolutely convinced throughout the entirety of the film it will, what happens? NOTHING. Instead of saying "Great, it's as I forsaw in my force dream. Now let's work on that whole bringing back the dead thing you told me about Palpatine." Anakin just yells that horrible "NOOOO!" and forgets about it apparently. Making his fall to the dark side for absolutely nothing. The dialogue itself, in that one scene, isn't as painful as the others but what it represents is a bastardization of the story.

i kinda like the end of 'jurassic park.' i mean i forget exactly what happens (birds flying, right?) but i like the part where the t rex roars and the banner falls on him. i think that's a pretty dope moment. but, then, i am clearly a dork.

i also think people spaz about digital effects without really clarifying what they're spazzing about (gee, surprise). of course there is a beauty to in-camera effects that can transcend nostalgia, but don't forget there are things that happen digitally in films that you don't even realize are there. there's an art to that too.

No offense to the people that have complained about the supposed overuse of CGI. Your film opinions are just as important as any one else here, but seriously, what are you guys expecting? Yes, practical effects are awesome. There is something tangible about their on-screen presence that really draws you into the movie. However, it's the 21st century and technology has moved on. So should you. I'm not saying that this makes bad CGI ok, but if you think you can do better than go out and buy and learn Maya. Until then, stop complaining. Look beyond the effects and have fun with the movie, which will hopefully have a strong stoyline. I think the CG looks solid so far and I can't wait to see the entire finished film. Did some of you ever stop to think about the CG that you don't see? There's wire removal in that trailer and corrections to some of the shots. All of those count as VFX shots. Just hope for a good film that will join the ranks of the three before it and stop picking apart the 2 minutes that you've seen. For all you know it'll look a lot more refined in the final film. Ok I'm done, my soap box collapsed out from under me.

NOT CGI... the problem is its utter lack of quality, and that Film makers who's entire careers are built & based on finding ways to make the 'unreal', real. Would James Cameron be recognized as a mechanical and visual genius if he had simply plopped his actors in front of a green screen for every single scene? Granted, Jurassic Park was loaded with CGI... but it was of QUALITY.. and it didn't eliminate the need for (or substitute for that matter) a good story. King Kong did exactly that. A HUGE film that was little more then a cartoon with Jack Black acting like his normal fat-assed, fucktarded and unfunny self. Raiders is and was a Hallmark and a benchmark for Steven... it was the bar the entire industry was placed against for DECADES. When Doom and Crusade failed to compete with it, people were slow to recognize that Steven had made the same mistakes Lucas had with Jedi. Childish humor and buffoonery are NOT good substitutes for great story telling and characters you actually care about. CGI has become the 'Acme kit for instant film making', and it is killing the industry when it is used simply because its available. PS: Lost World, Minority Report, and WOTW sucked ass on buttered toast.

Do you think he fucks nerd chicks from conventions? Or female techies who work in ILM? Do you think he's kinky and wears a Darth Vader mask while fucking? I bet Spielberg uses that leather jacket and whip when he fucks Kate Capshaw. He totally sees himself as Indy in his head, and you can tell Kate's a freak. I bet she's fucked a few poolboys and gardeners to help satisfy those carnal urges that the Berg satisfy himself, ya know?

There is so much cynisism going on, its tiring to read. People who say they "despise" Last Crusade are baffling to me. With Speilberg i have utmost trust with, knowing that i can walk in and at worst enjoy the film on some level. There is a reek of quality in every movie he does, even non-popcorn fare like Munich. But when he turns it on, with the Jurassic Park's, Jaws, E.T's and the Indys, you owe it to yourself as a movie fan to just sit back, leave your cynisism at the door and enjoy the fuck out of the flick. Remember what it used to be like as a kid? The wonder? The excitement? I still get that with Speilberg. The moments of father/son banter in last crusade are just utter genius. Genius. The director playing on something almost all of us can relate to in being scolded by a parent. Im going to walk in to the theater on May 22nd with trust in my heart. When has Steven Speilberg really (I mean REALLY) let you down? He is like a good father, separated from his kids (us) who never misses a visit. And when he arrives, he sticks you in the car and whisks you away to some awesome theme park where you have fucking good day. Even when he returns to drop you off to your waiting mother in the evening, you can see in her eyes she's thinking, "God damn it, i wish i never left you after Empire of the Sun, you bearded minx."

Remember the old bit on Sesame Street "One of these things, doesn't belong". Actually, it's sullied a bit by grouping the Indys when Raiders is in a class of it's own. I don't hate Last Crusade, it was entertaining and it's far better than TOD. But it pales in comparison to Raiders. As does the Jurassic Park films, which should never be mentioned in the same breath as Jaws other than a general listing of Spielberg's filmography. Anyway, this griping about "cynics" and "haters" is juvenile. I hardly hate Spielberg, when he comes out with a new film I'm always interested in it. But I happen to have so much love for his early popcorn work (specifically Jaws, Raiders and Close Encounters) that his ventures into escapist entertainment in the last couple of decades suffer in comparison. Had it been another film maker it's easier to hold it to another standard. That isn't hate or cynicism, if anything it's a higher respect for the standards Spielberg set earlier in his career than the folks who are gobbling up anything he's making now. Spielberg definitely seems more "on" these past 15 years or so with his adult oriented fare like Munich, Saving Private Ryan, Catch Me if You Can, Schindler's List. And no other film maker has stepped in to fill the void of making truly great escapist fare since he lost that touch.
Just to chime in on the CGI debate.

My analogy of disliking the trailer has nothing to do with the CGI. It has to do more with the vibe that I am getting over all from what I am being shown and thus far the vibe has been suck.

As I said earlier there is something empty about what I've seen so far and I don't mean CGI I mean it just doesn't feel alive in general. Now be that it being CGI or not does not take away from me my reaction to the trailer and yes an admitted bias towards both Lucas and Ford who have not had anything worth mentioning for years.

As far as CGI itself goes, I hate it. Personally I miss the old days when full sets and models had to be built to pull of something that made you go "HOLY SHIT!". Those days are gone and will never return. Quite sad to because a lot of love went into those sets and models. Sure a lot of love goes into programming what we see now but it's not the same. It's still missing something that for me takes away from what I am seeing instead of engrossing me.

The compositing/chroma keying on the scene just before the tank goes over the cliff drives me nuts. I just close my eyes every time the nazi guy gets up on top cause I know it's coming. IIRC there is weakness in the scene where the plane "flies" through the tunnel as well, but that didn't bother me as much. Honestly, it's not *bad*, it's just an itch.. every time I see it, I have to scratch it. ( and I'm not an Indy 3 hater. I LOVE it. ) Rancor scene in Jedi does the same thing to me. I'll get over it :)

Nothing in that trailer looks like it's been digitally rendered. The cliff that they're racing along is obviously a large scale model, as are the pillars and the giant stone temple. What you're objecting to is live action green screen stuff that's been digitally comped with REAL miniature sets.

I sort of echo some of the comments about how more or less, it's too easy to understand what goes into CGI imagery, while before unless you were in the industry or read about it you really didn't know how many of these images were pulled off. But still CGI is a great tool for film making. The problem isn't the CGI but how film makers have been using it. Too often they're putting all the cinematic burden on the CGI and letting basic things like composition, editing, acting, sound (as opposed to noise) carry the scene. They're coming up with stories and scenes just because of what can be done with CGI instead of things that should work on their own merits, whatever that might be.

As much as TPM was boring and AOTC had that cringe inducing love story, ROTS had the classic "NOOOOOO!!" scene which trumps every bad PT moment. It also turned the who Jedi purge into a 3 minute montage where Jedi knights were taken out like punks, getting shot in the back. Obi-Wan riding a stupid lizard? General Grevious using four lightsabers that get cut off in the first two second of the fight. A film where Obi-Wan and Anakin spend most of their time separated. AGAIN! I don't think a new Indy movie is necessarily a bad idea, but the trailers/teasers don't excite me as they should. Yes, there is a huge element of nostalgia at play here for many of us, and I'm sure most people are curious as to how the film will play out, but the gags in the trailer seem forced, and the action--what we've seen of it--looks old-fashioned, and not in a good way. The problem is verisimilitude, or the lack of it. Spiel doesn't believe in this stuff anymore, the way he used to. He's no longer the kid playing with the train set. He's the oscar winner who sees Indy as less important than his "worthy" films, and wants the world to know it, and I expect we'll get the sense of this when Skull is released. By the way, Mister Spielberg, the wrong guy died at the end of Saving Private Ryan. It should have been Ryan, which would have rendered the title wonderfully ironic and have completely proved the point of the film, which was about loss and sacrifice. And you wimped out on AI too--the kid should have stayed in the sea. Oh hell, the ending of War of the Worlds also sucked. Tom Cruise's kid should have fucking died! I very much doubt that Skull will demonstrate much courage in its execution, either. But Jeez, I hope I'm wrong.

Spielberg shits more talent daily than you’ve possessed in your entire life so why not take the arrogance down a few notches? If you sincerely think it’s all been downhill since ET, I would submit that you are in no position to call other people “retards.” Munich is a phenomenally well made film that is also unflinchingly courageous in terms of content, especially coming from a Jewish director. Both A.I. and Minority Report are incredibly great and intelligent science fiction entries, as is War of the Worlds, a film where Spielberg resisted making an Independence Day retread and instead deliberately crafted something more intimate and compelling while simultaneously violent and intense. And that’s just his recent work; I don’t even need to go into the why Schindler’s List is the definitive film on the Holocaust and one of the greatest films ever made or how the opening scenes in Saving Private Ryan redefined how a war film should look and sound. If you want to go on trashing the man, be my guest, but please understand that your arrogant dismissal of one of the most significant and influential voices in cinema doesn’t make you bigger or smarter but rather makes you look all that more pathetic and full of your own pretentious bullshit.

WAH WAH WAH!!! "Too much CGI!" "My heart wants to love it, but my brain won't let me!" "Reminds me of The Last Crusade!" "Lucas is involved!" Will you whiners shut up and wait until you see the freakin' movie???? Sure, you can complain about what you didn't like in the trailer or about how Shia will ruin it for you, but a trailer is NOT the movie!!! IDIOTS!!!!

Okay hater-haters. I was one of the hated people in the other TB that didn't like the feature trailer. I'm WAY on board w/ this TV promo. I know, same ol' scenes. But as has been discussed to death, the difference is in the pacing and the intangibles. The "genius" joke is organic and funny and totally Indy.

"Spielberg's a hack!"

"Homo what?"

There is absolutely nothing clever or original or meaningful or funny in this talkback. Or in the flamewar between the Doc and BSB. Save for BoboVision's post about a Shiva penis, count me utterly bored.

I think we've exhausted ourselves talking about Indy. No more topics remain. Shia, the hat, the beef, the neck, blah blah blah blah blah. Either someone post something intelligent or let's move on. This talkback is dead. The title spammers can take over.

My co-worker alerted me to this new vid on IJ.com, but said it looked pretty much like a condensed version of the trailer. I don't know if it was the 1 or 2 different/new shots or just the lack of CGI pants and the slow overture from the beginning of the Teaser trailer, but this TV trailer got my blood pumping a bit.

I already couldn't wait for May 22, but once these thigns start hitting the airwaves, it's going to be madness. Maddness, I tell you!

Lemme ask you a serious question. Do you actually like LeBeef? I know the movies not out yet but damn that kid is annoying and really out of place here. With Indy now older, we need someone to pick up the slack and be a good adventurous compadre to Indy.

I don't particularly like LaBeef. But I haven't seen him in this movie. So I won't hate. But if you asked me if I would prefer Ryan Gosling to be the next Indiana Jones, I would say yes.

Flawlessly dull maybe. What's with all the "too much CGI" backlash? What year are you people living in? It's 2008. We have computers now. We use them to create things. Accept it.

"Rescue Dawn". After escaping a Japanese prison camp as a child, Christian Bale goes on to be captured in a Vietnamese prison camp. The third part of the trilogy will be Christian Bale getting captured in a Korean prison camp after going on a top secret mission to infiltrate their nuclear weapons program. Bale is the go-to guy for prison camp movies.

Growing up, the whole Indy trilogy was great fun. I don't get people hating TLC. It had some great action, humour and, most of all, heart. TOD, I can understand people hating. But, really, that film is more classic B-grade action than any of the Indy films. I mean, it is one of the most insane films I've ever seen (and I've watched some messed up films!). Hearts being torn out, mine-cart chases, rope bridges, jumping out of a plane on a life raft, roofs closing in with spikes, bugs, monkey brains, eye-ball soup. The film was totally gross, over-the-top and silly but I think it craps all over most films today and I've never seen anything like it.

Listen to Harrison when he says this line--he sounds a lot less like the gruff post "Air Force One" Harrison Ford and a lot more like the energetic Harrison Ford from the "Indy" movies. This is something I just noticed and it's a very good sign. I think we are going to be surprised by this movie. I'm not expecting it to be on the level of perfection of "Raiders" or have the spectacular, ballsy action and setpieces of "Temple" but by God if this is a entertaining, old-fashioned action romp on the order of "Last Crusade" with Spielberg/Lucas/Ford putting everything they have left in the tank into this movie I think we are in for a real treat this summer.

I think this will be a fun time at the movies.

I'm not a huge fan of either 'Raiders' or 'Temple', but I do think that 'The Last Crusade' is a great family film, which owes a lot to the Connery-Ford relationship.

As long as Shia and Harrison's relationship in 'Kingdom' is as good as the Sean-Harrison one in 'Crusade', I think this could be a lot of fun.
Lucas

You know Lucas gets some really bad shit and portrayed as being one of the worst hacks in film.

I mean the guy only created Star Wars irrespective of what people think of the prequels, the originals are absolutley awesome, the prequels are just shat upon, because the originals were so good, we all expected something that good again, me included and as time goes by I cant any longer convince myslef they are good films, but I would argue that ROTS is almost as good as ROTJ. But TPM and AOTC are total shat compared to originals. He also only came up wth the idea of Indiana Jones as an adventuring archeologist, only one of the best movie characters of all time.

Give the guy a break, he's analysed and critiqued more than any other film maker out there.

I am so looking forward to this movie, just like i was with prequels, and alhtough they did dissapoint through time, I still loved going to cinema originaly to see them with mates. and I still have them on DVD.

Lucas did not write this, Spielberg is directing, the dream team is back, the first 3 were all fantastic movies and I have full confidence that this will be no different, unfortunately I think there are a lot of poeple going to go see this and already have the idea in their head they dont like it, because thats cool these days.

Go and see it, disengage the brain (Its a B movie) and have a good fucking time watching Indy swing back into action

Whats wrong with this film?

I admit its my least favourite of the 3 Indy films, but I still love it, the humour is the best in this of all 3. I love Sean Canary in this film (Us Scottish are allowed to call him that). Best bit of casting ever for Indy's old man.

If patter can be as good as this with Shia in Kingdom, but also have the adventure feel of Raiders (One of best films ever made) then this can be great.

Fuck everyone, I am looking so forward to this, more than I ahve done for any movie in years and it is only narrowly ahead of TDK, because Begins is my favourite Superhero film of all time.
