It's Moulder and Scully. Great poster! Good question, too: How will it fare against TDK? Maybe some people, the ignorant ones, will think the big X is for X-men. The big X is a statement, X-Files owns the X racket in this town!

I agree it's very risky, but remember Batman Begins had a very similar box office to Superman Returns (that many of us here consider was a failure). Also, no one really knows how the general public will react to Ledger's Joker. I read somewhere that it is believed that Brandon's Lee death ended up hurting The Crow. Superhero movies generally suffer a big drop on second weekend. Other thing, just because a movie has huge internet hype, it doesn't mean it will be a success (Snakes on a Plane, and even Cloverfield). On the other hand, Fight the Future was a letdown at the box office and that was when the show was probably at the peak of it's popularity.

Well keep in mind that Begins had to regain the audience's trust after Batman and Robin. The thing about Begins is that it had great legs at the box office and that's a sign of good word of mouth.

With dvd sales plus the hype around the new film, don't see why it wouldn't beat Begins 205 million box office take. The question is just how big will it be? When will WB begin the mainstream Batmania craze? and can X Files knock bats off the top spot and be the number 1 movie in america???

Only time will tell.

Does anyone really care?

I loved The X-Files when the series first started, but the last two or three seasons pretty much sucked ass, the mythology got evermore convoluted and uninteresting, and it ultimately reached a point where I honestly didn't care if I missed an episode. On top of which, the series ended how many years ago? Hasn't the wave of popularity faded? It reminds me of how they kept trying to revitalize Knight Rider with shitty made-for-TV movies, but (shitty writing aside) the moment had passed and nobody cared. Do we really need this movie? I mean, is there any chance they'll actually be able to recapture the magic that made the series great in the beginning, or will this be the equivalent of digging up the corpse of a departed loved one, sodomizing it, pissing on it, and then setting it on fire, all while videotaping it to post on YouTube?

by Gwai Lo
Mar 28th, 2008
12:45:28 AM
Get it? A Dent? Honestly though, TDK will absolutely set the bar way higher than Batman Begins did. Let us look at the facts. TDK benefits from the good will of Batman Begins. Batman Begins suffered from the bad will of Batman and Robin. Christian Bale is no longer "that guy from American Psycho" to Joe Public, he has been in tons of stuff now and everyone knows he's badass. Heath Ledger's death will draw extra business, whether that offends your delicate sensibilities or not. TDK has had a MUCH more agressive marketing campaign than BB. And finally, word of mouth will likely be incredible. This movie looks like it's going to rock balls hard, and people will talk about it. That's what made Batman Begins a box office success by the way, the legs. With an under 50 million opening weekend take, it didn't look like it was going to light the world on fire (blockbusters typically make 3 times their opening weekend) but it went on to make 205 million domestically. the production budget was much lower than Superman Returns, which is why it is considered a success where Superman was considered a failure, even though they made almost identical amounts. I'm predicting an X-Men pattern of rising returns with every installment, and I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if TDK did Spider-man numbers.

about Duchovney and Anderson's careers. Both are comfortable doing their own thing outside of X-files (Duchovney's new show and Anderson's work in Britain) so hopefully that means they'll be more willing to jump into their old roles every few years or so.

As far as it being too late to make the movie, I disagree. How long ago was it since the last Rambo film, or Indiana Jones, or Die Hard? It's only been about six years since the X-Files went off the air. Compared to recent franchise revivals that's merely a blink of the eye.

I wonder if the extremely dark nature of the film will keep it from breaking 300 million? From what I've seen thus far I can't imagine this will be much of a family film and despite the number of douchebags who take their kids to see things they shouldn't I could see plenty of parents keeping their kids away from TDK. I personally hope it does very well but I have a feeling it won't be able to generate the revenue of something like Spiderman 3, which is pretty sad when you think about it. I hope I'm wrong.

bad release date, bad early word of mouth and bad advertising. now, usually those 3 are all automatic death sentences for good looking movies. the dark knight will probably do at least the same amount and get around the same great reviews as batman begins. mainly because of the fact that it's a sequel and looks no different that the first. plus there's a ton of competition this year and kids will probably see it just because space chimps which is released that same day looks like complete shit. and the batman cartoons never did that well anyway with kids, they were more interested in the toys and comic books. i could be wrong myself because kids were too pressured by the earlier attempts. but spiderman is a completly different story, because spiderman is more of a family friendly superhero charector than batman no matter what which is another reason why the movies did so fucking well. i can't fucking wait for the dark knight because i really wanna see how they deal with two face and the joker this time around because i'm well aware of people having mixed feelings about jack attack's joker and tommy lee jones's two face, and that people are wanting the same reboot with those 2 that they got with the batman charector in the 1st chris nolan outing. however, the villians are usually a distraction no matter what and it's been a small issue going all the way back to the original captain america. i really hope they get it right again.
Hopefully there's enough of a Summer audience to go around.

There are so many great films coming out I want the studios to realize they're doing something right this one time. If you don't reward or punish these people then they have no clue what's going on. TDK is going to be huge. Did you look at the numbers for the first one? It was not a box office record like it was when Batman had nipples. BUT because of the George douchebag Clooney fuck up, it had a big hill to climb. People were not very forgiving for Batman and Robin and it turned a lot of people off on seeing any new one, let a lone one with pretty much unheard of actor named Christian Bale (YES i know you all know him, and any girl who like Newies knows him, but to ESPN loving and soccer moms this guy was an unknown. And you need that demographic to make the big bucks). But word of mouth for Begins was huge and it probably had some of the smallest declines week to week for any summer block buster. I don't think it ever droped more then 45% from weekend to weekend. Which is huge considering pretty much any summer blockbuster drops 50% or more after opening weekend.

That being said, now that people think Batman is good again, people are ok with Christian Bale, and fucking everyone and the pope knows who Heath Leger is. This movie is going to be huge. Most people don't give a shit about Two Face being in the movie, most people think two face is joker half the time. Plus since the WB has calmed down its what looked liked to be a media blitz after Legers passing. We haven't gotten tired of the movie. There is a thing of mystery about the movie now. I mean ET said it was the 2nd most anticipated movie of the summer (behind Indy). The only thing that would hold it back from being one of the top three grossers of the year would be an R rating. That or if Christopher Nolan did the impossible and made a probably the first superhero sequel that wasn't better then the first... say since Batman Returns?

thank you for the explaination about batman begins the decent moneymaker and the tired batman and robin debate. {it's not nearly as bad as people said it was.} don't shit on burton's second and final batty outing. that was just as good as the jack nicholson joker one. it had deadly penguins, a sexy catwoman and christopher walken. what more could you want in a dark sequel to a campy comic book classic? it's like the harry potter of batman films. if they do the penguin in the third chris nolan outing, they should get either brendan gleeson or brian cox. they shouldn't fuck it up by getting paris hilton as harley quinn or hayden christensen as the riddler.

he unfortunately appeared as the series was on its last leg. I certainly wouldn't mind if he showed up for the movie.

As far as Burton's Batmans go, I think Returns is just as good, if not better, than the first. I love the fact that Burton decided to tell everyone to fuck off and decided to make the least commercial Summer blockbuster imaginable. It's a very violent film for PG-13, and instead of being about Batman, the title character, he decides to make it about the villains. It was pretty much Burton giving everyone the finger and doing whatever the hell he wanted. I have no idea how he got away with it.

...and the thing bout Superman is, he sucks...he has every imaginable power (cept telekinesis, unless he does now) and all the powers are not-related...I can understand someone havin telekinesis, telepathy, empathy, etc cuz they're all brain powers, but super-strength, ice breath, heat vision...wow...and the only thing that can hurt him is a rock...and in the newest movie, didnt he lift a island of his own weakness?...SUPERMAN FUCKIN SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!...now wit that said, would like to see a live-action super fight wit him against Doomsday or Metallo or someone who is actually powerful...and not just financially...if Superman existed in the real world, his arch-enemy would be Warren Buffet...

If Superman existed in THIS world, his archenemy would be Rupert Murdoch. Hell, probably Bush and his cronies would see ol Supes as a terrorist for some damned reason.

from the comics involve his struggle to remain non-partisan and avoid getting involved in human politics and conflict. He's Superman, he should be able to swoop down on Darfur and fix stuff right? But he doesn't, because he doesn't want to interfere. Once he starts getting involved in political issues, then he becomes a tool (see: superweapon) for whatever side he picks, and the fascistic implications become pretty clear. I mean he could just pronounce himself King of Earth and make us all bow down to his rule, but nope, he just stops muggers and foils Lex's pesky land schemes. And he lifts stuff, he lifts a lot of heavy things you wouldn't expect to see lifted. Go Superman, go!
That title's already been used.

OK I'm lying, I'm not, but just thinking of Gillian Anderson gets the juices flowing. God...I'm about to...come...fffuck...but WAIT a moment! I forgot they fucked everything up by having Mulder and Scully get together!! How can you masturbate over that?? How lame did the show get once Duchovny stepped back and became a recurring only?? Why the Christ-shaped buttplug did they even continue??? That would be like My Name Is Earl continuing but Earl has disappeared and makes the odd appearance now and then when he feels like it! Lame. Now I've gotta clean up all that precum I got all over my keys typing this. God damn it all to Hades!!!

and mashed them together. Are they walking on the batsignal? Still can't wait for this. I kinda hope they conclude Mulder's sister's storyline. Some aliens mixed in with some monsters. I'd have an O-gasm.

They did conclude that thread, back in the seventh season. The worst way imaginable, I think. Still, I want to believe that it was all lies. Same with Mulder being CSM's son, that is just silly.

I wasn't saying anything bad on Batman Returns. I like it (especially the Pee Wee Herman cameo). But while that first post was a guess. I've done some research. AND! It turns out B-Man Begins is the second highest grossing (domestically) B-man movie. It goes Batman, Batman Begins, Batman Forever (my personal favorite), Batman Forever, Batman With Nipples and Batman Mask of the Phantasmorgasem. HOOAH!
Was Mulder really Cancer Man's son?

I know they insinuated it quite a bit, but did they ever come out and say it? After the seventh seasons I only watched the X-Files periodically. Although, as I've caught some of the eighth season on repeats, I've realized it was better than I remember. The ninth season was still a fucking train wreck.
I love it!
