... is the one most out of character for him, Topsy-Turvy. An amazing achievement, and one of the top films of the late 90s.

...Love Mike Leigh. Vera Drak was depressing as hell, but I found all or nothing really moving and warm. My favourite Mike Leigh film is still gonna be Naked, of course.

I doubt any other director in the history of film-making could have coached the performance out of Camp Champ that Mike Leigh did in this animated gem (I understand the now-legendary "You can play marbles, if you try" was improvised in one take). Apparently, there were a lot of tears and tantrums on set but, my word, the end result was worth it. When Dark Heart promises to help make the camp a fairer and better place for campers, now knowing the importance of friendship and being a 'Camp Champ' when it comes to being a friend, I-- well-- I'm very much a manly man but there's not a dry eye in the room. Thank you, Mr Leigh for opening my eyes to what cinema can do.

is a Mike Leigh film. Or a Ken Loach. Consistently brilliant, or at worst, interesting, film-makers both.

...sounds a bit more like Leigh's older films, more driven by character and class disctinctions than plot, like VERA DRAKE sort of was...
Leigh has never topped 'Nuts In May' or 'Meantime'...

...just my opinion. I doubt that will change. Personally, i thought Topsy Turvy his most interesting film in recent years (certainly his most entertaining). I thought Vera Drake pretty funny actually - some great black comedy there. Loach is our best filmmaker btw... Meadows comes a close second though and his new film (with young Thomas Turgoose once again) looks the biz... http://tinyurl.com/2sdql5 Over and out.
