This movie will be a joke. How can you make a movie about a person/situation in which the story's not finished? Besides, Bush is too politicized now; there is no way to make this movie fair in any respect. Any attempt to humanize Bush (Not that Stone would...) would be disregarded as fake and dramatized by liberals because as everyone knows Bush is evil. And attacks on his positions and policies would be similarly discounted because the full scope of his presidency is not yet known and because I don't believe for a second that liberal Hollywood could be even remotely unbiased in telling this story. It'll tank at the Box Office like all the Iraq War films that've been out in the past three years.

There's hardly a President around who wasn't vilified while he was in office... whether it be Jefferson, Lincoln, Reagan, Bush I, Clinton, or George W.

It's only AFTER they've left office and some time has passed to see the "fruits" of their presidencies that the public has an accurate picture of how good a job a president's done.

Right now, Dubya's Prez, so "everyone hates him," because they're sheep and it's the "in" thing to do. But everyone said the same thing about Reagan and Bush, Sr. back in the 80s and now, 20-30 years later, they're presidential "gods."

Odds are pretty dang good that, a quarter century from now, the "masturbating chimp" will be seen as visionary and proactive in regards to the Middle East and Africa, much as Reagan is today in regards to Communism.

Unfortunately, raw bitterness and myopism prevent many from even considering the possibility that Bush 43 isn't NEARLY the dumb, evil and incompetent Chief Executive they desperately wish he was.

And in 25 years, they'll probably be singing his praises much like everyone else, convinced that they'd supported his policies all along "way back when."

Was G W Bush that interesting?

I have no doubt that there is a good Oliver Stone movie in the story of George W. Bush, but why now, when the country is caught up in the excitement of getting rid of the guy? Who is going to give a shit about a Bush movie in November when his replacement has mercifully been elected? Why can't Oliver wait 10 years, or even 2?

Who would fork over millions of dollars to make a very political movie (W is an extremely divisive character) when political films are flopping; and, about an extremely unpopular President... who is still in office. What was the pitch: Hey, I have a great idea: I'll make a inherently divisive film about a guy most everyone will be wanting to forget! Box office gold!
Who is there for? Really?
by superduper3000
Mar 27th, 2008
12:02:46 AM
Who exactly will this film be for? Is there anyone who even remotely expects Stone to give us a nuanced, fair look at W's story which (like that other guy mentioned) still isn't finished yet? Stone's hardly been the most objective person out there,

But seriously, who is this for? The F-9/11 crowd who want to simultaneously feel good about themselves and spend a few bucks at the theater with their fellow Bush-hating friends? Maybe they'll feel a bit patriotic, and not dumb as nails for falling for a quick cash-grab masqueraded as patriotism (like Michael Moore's a martyr now?). I'm still waiting for the promised censorship that these Hollywood types keep promising, but instead we keep getting leftist bullshit masquerading as entertainment. Anyone read Rolling Stone magazine, lately? Forget about it...

I try to do my thinking for myself, and while I may not be the biggest Bush supporter out there, the hate and bile Hollywood feel for the guy is borderline psychotic... how many anti-Iraqi war movies last year? How many flops? For all their bullshit on Darfur (is that the cause of the moment now?), how come nothing from them, but fucking Stallone gave us Burma?

So who is this "W" movie for, and why would any financier trust Stone to tell it? Because he helped write the screenplay? Actually that's his strongest suit, personally, but perhaps the elite will pay him to say publicly what they don't have the balls to themselves...so go gracefully Stone, and do their dirty work for them. Hollywood won't quit until they've re-filmed the entirety of history itself...and then maybe once more when attitudes start shifting again.

I can't even imagine the smugness that'll glaze the faces anyone who's convinced themselves that "W" will be anything other than it - one last chance to shit on the Bush administration by the assumed master of controversy...after all, one only has to look at the bookshelves of any bookstore or novelty story (even Comedy Central) to see how profitable making fun of G.W. has become... I hardly think Obama or McCain will make that transition for them. A veritable empire of riches, thanks largely to a small sect of psychotics too busy dangling the marionette strings of the brainwashed left to even consider the de-valuation of their own country. You don't have to be a conservative or independent to know that...enjoy your movie, and I hope it's exactly what you want it to be...

FlickaPoo was being facetious. He was implying that most people don't hold his presidency in very high regard. You stated "they're presidential 'gods.'" You may have quoted him, but not in the context of what he was saying. I'm taking it up with you because you act like we "desperately wish" that Bush was "dumb, evil and incompetent." You think I want our President to be dumb and incompetent? You think I like paying $4.00 a gallon for gas? You think I like the fact that the economy is in such shitty condition that my place of employment is losing money and possibly being sold? You think I like the fact that abstinence education is being pushed instead of sex education, leading to 1 in 4 teenage girls having an STD? You think I like the fact that, according to a study by Johns Hopkins, by 2006 over 600,000 were dead because of the war in Iraq, translating to possibly over 1 million current deaths? What a brilliant Middle East strategy. I will not deny that I consider myself a progressive, but what in that list exactly in that list jives with conservative thought? What in that list will look good in the future? And Reagan, while controversial, killed how many communists during the Cold War? That’s what I fucking though. If you are a conservative still supporting the Bush administration, then you are the one who is fucking brainwashed. The brainwashed left? I hate how those in power, those who screwed up, and those who support them whine and cry like they are the ones who are being repressed, censored or whatever the fuck they are in a rage about.

The great art based on history is usually not made until many years, even decades after the event. History needs time to really process the event and how it has affected the world. Stephen Crane wasn't even born until after the Civil War ended, yet he wrote the great novel about the Civil War. Vonnegut wrote Slaughterhouse-Five in the 60s as did Heller with Catch 22. The recent Iraq movies may wind up looking really foolish in a decade or so. I don't think history is going to show W to be a great leader, but it may be kinder to him than the current opinion.

is as clear to anyone with half a brain. Neocon advisers pressured Bush into invading Iraq after 9/11, arguing it would be the fastest and easiest way to democratize & stabilize the Middle East. So the administration made up some reasons to get the populace behind them and threw dirt on anybody who called "bullshit!" Then the occupation went to hell - either on purpose (in order to make sure the US remained on the ground in Iraq long-term thus keeping Iran in check and securing Israel) or by gross incompetence and lack of understanding of the socio-politics of Iraq. Now that 4,000 American boys are dead and 5 times number wounded (along with many more Iraqis) and we enter the damned-if-we-stay damned-if-we-leave position, Bush has gone into a type of self-delusional psychosis where he has convinced himself that he has done great things (deposed Saddam, prevented another terrorist attack on US soil, brought freedom to Iraq). His brain hasn't given him the choice. Anyone the with ego it takes to become POTUS (or VP or SECDEF) isn't going to look back on his life and say, "yep, I played the fiddle while America burned."

I won't take the long road bait either, but as a conservative, where Bush has soundly failed is that he has done the absolute worst job of a PR campaign of anything positive in his presidency. There have been plenty of positives along with the negatives of any presidency (especially one where so much shit hit the fan), but managing PR has been absolutely abysmal. You figure at some point in 8 years the guy could have gotten a speech coach. That's why alot of the country is so "Obamafied", without knowing dick about the guy--because he can frigging speak. Its like suffering withdrawal.

Like casting Cromwell, Brolin and Burstyn makes it seem like its going to be dramatic. But then casting Banks (even Mrs. W is pretty mucha joke in real life)makes it seem like this may be a comedy? If this had been Brolin like a year ago, I would say comedy. Now he is the star of the most recent best movie winner. And is popular again. Lets just see if they cast Tracy Morgan as Colin Powell or not. Though I know its a long shot because it seems like he has given up on trying to do anything of merit since Three Kings, Ice Cube (with some speech) leasons may be a decent Colin Powell. Though I bet they are trying to Forest Whitaker or someone like him for the role. Forest I think is overrated, I know everyone here loves him because of the Sheild, but I just don't see it.

Just don't have the right voices for the role. They both have deep man voices. The Bush's are nerds, Plus Cromwell's got 5 inches on Bush. WOW Brolin and Bush Jr. are the exact same height though, thats probably how he got the role. But I mean this coming from the guy who tried to make us think Costner was JFK, or Hannibal 2 was Nixon. The only thing we can hope for in this movie now is that during the scene where Bush Jr. signs his soul over to Satan, Bush Sr. stand behind him and says, "That'll do pig, that'll do."

I see what everyone is saying about "too soon" and the fact that some time needs to pass to gain historical perspective but from the casting news, I would say that's not going to matter because this movie could ONLY work if it's about Bush's past. You're all absolutely right. No one wants to see an Oliver Stone rehash of the past 8 years and I don't think that's what he's going to do. I think it's going to focus on all the fucked up things that happened to this man and the extremely bad choices he's made as a man, before he became president. And you know it all has to be pretty interesting if the Bush Team did everything they could to intimidate the media into ignoring it and not letting it get out until after he was in office. Hell, there was even one guy (don't remember his name but I saw an awesome doc about him) who wrote a scathing biography of Bush who was harrassed and eventually run out of buisiness by the white house until he eventually committed suicide. When shit like that goes down, you know there's some good dirt there and I think the point would be that had we known these things at election time would he have even been a front runner in the republican party? I think if the movie covers the first staged election (which enough time has passed to allow detailed examination in a film) and ends with W being sworn in, it can very well work. Oh, and for all the Bush supporters, I would like to now take this moment to remind you, I didn't post this to start some kind of partisan debate so don't bother trying to crawl up my ass about anything you deem as untrue or negative I've written here regarding the W. You're right and I'm wrong and delusional. I get it. I'm just here to talk about the possibilities of this movie not the man. It's early in the morning and I'm just killing time so save the debate for someone who actually wants to argue with you please.

But 5-6th where there still should be money left because there haven't been enough greedy kids to waste away the money. As a 5-6 generation Gates, you would have to do nothing in your life. Absolutly nothing and you will end up living a better life then probably 90% of the population. Could you imagine realizing that as a teenager? While your friends are like thinking of college or learning things, you would not have to give a fuck. What would that be like?

The far-right hates the guy because of his conspiratorial tendencies - see JFK. And I think it's unfortunate for him that the movie, which is based entirely on an amalgam of various theories and conjecture (something he himself has declared), has come to be regarded as some sort of official account.

Now, on the flipside, the far-left wanted to burn him at the stake for WTC. He wanted WTC to be nothing more than a film about the people trapped in the rubble. And because he didn't directly address any 9-11 conspiracy topics, the far-left nutjobs claimed he had turned his back on them and that he had swallowed the "neocon Kool-aid".

Some days, it just doesn't pay to quit snorting blow.

See, the current administration knows the world will end in 2012 (according to the Mayan Calendar), so they set up this "War in Iraq" as a way to spend billions on food reserves and shelters for millions to survive the impending mini Ice-Age.

They can't possibly tell people the world will undergo a dramatic climate shift; Riots would erupt, people would go insane, raping, looting, pillaging, etc.

So what better way to disguise their motives than war? Put a seemingly ignorant puppet in front of the whole thing, someone the people of the US can hate or disagree with. Let the people piss and moan about how stupid he is (while taking little to no action to replace him), and let the money pile up.

I mean, does it look like we are really sending all this money to Iraq? Soldiers are always citing how ill-equipped they are to handle the insurgents, despite our country having one of the largest and well equipped armies on the world. Something ain't right.

I'm telling you, The Administration is stockpiling food and building shelter for the impending mini-Ice-Age of 2012. And if you believe that, then you're higher than I am.

If you watch a stage play, you don't expect the actors to look like the real people they're portraying. It's about the acting, not the look. Anyway, I could give a rat's ass about this film. I don't care what Oliver Stone's opinions are about anything and I'll never forgive him for butchering Natural Born Killers.

They blend in and speak rationally, have opinions that aren't pre-fabricated by the right-wing media punditocracy and generally think for themselves. They are ashamed of Bush, and whether or not they support the war they have a healthy and informed outlook on the reality of the situation as it pertains to the people who make up the military. They don't necessarily like Obama or Clinton, (or Mcain, for that matter) but are willing to think outside the myopic boxes of red and blue for the sake of an intelligent discussion. People like Uss Cygnus, MorbidObesity, Prossor and my personal favorite, cchhrriissm, aren't representative of ordinary conservative thinking, they are bootlicker, toadies, and stooges to what passes for divisive and reactionary far-right propaganda. They are the right's equivalent to the left's well-known 'loony' membership, and equally small and inconsequential. If they seem like they make a lot of noise or take up a lot of space, just remember, that the empty tin rattles the loudest.

And speaking of what Obama said about the preacher, I for one, agree with Jon Stewart (not unheard of), when he observed that an American politician had for once, spoken of race to the American people, and actually treated them like adults.

And it's really fun to yell at them on the talkbacks. As the Black Head of the CIA would say, "That's why I got it wrapped up in this special CIA napkin."

what fucking positives has the bush presidency given us?? an economy in tatters thanks to repug policies of no oversight...our manufacturing base is gone....we are embroiled in an illegal, immoral and idiotic occupation of a foreign country...and as a conservative, bush has failed miserably...look at spending...look at stupid social programs like no child left behind...and dont get me started on the border

nice to have a fox viewer join us...too bad you are too intellectually stunted to know how to use the internets, so that you can watch wright's entire sermons (not just the excerpts, hand picked by fox)...20 years of sermons and fox finds 3 excerpts that they can skew to be anti white and anti american...i can show you dozen of pastor hagee sermons that are filled with anti american, anti gay, anti catholic vitriol....i can show you dozens of pat robertson hate speeches...need i go on??? wingnuts are retarded...they are all enemies of the state...and when obama appoints me the head of the fbi, i will use the patriot act to lock up every wingnut christian in gitmo...waterboard them until they accept that jesus was the son of a whore...and then cut their fuckin heads off
Bacci, good point, Nintendo- I hear that.

Bacci- real conservatives are the ones that know that Bush does not represent their interests, that he and the other Neo-Conservatives actually represent a fringe radical arm of the conservative ideology, one that has usurped power from the mainstream American conservative population, and actually works against traditional conservative values. The people who blindly follow this administration and call themselves 'conservative' fall into three camps- the completely stupid, the willfully ignorant bootlicker followers, and the .00001 percent of the population that actually benefit from Bush's policies. Most intelligent conservatives abandoned this administration a long time ago.

Nintendo- you don't sound like a loony at all, you sound frustrated and angry, like so many Americans. Your football analogy is actually a very accurate one, for many rabid sports fans a win or a loss is incidental, they follow their team as if they were divinely chosen to do so. Much like the so-called 'conservatives' that blindly follow Bush, they'll keep wearing the colors until the end of days, no matter how much their team fucking sucks.

so... many... "economic" insanity arguements brought up in this TB. Yet, I won't mention the BASIC, FUNDAMENTAL, ARGUEMENT-NEGATING economic fallacies mentioned in this TB. I've passed the test of realizing that this is a anonymous forum of random cinephiles pretending to know various shit, and don't feel the need to "man up" to anynonomous statements by total strangers. This test means I'm at least 15 in internet years.
BTW, I maintain,

A little of that Gump technomagic, and presto! Just add water....

That'll do, pig.

I know that this thread is probably dead, but I'd still like to ask you, in the off chance that you read this, why exactly you feel like you are the only one NOT pretending like you actually know something? It seems like people who deny that the economy is in terrible condition are fooling themselves. Trillions of dollars wasted on wars and nation building, most of which is borrowed from the Chinese, and pithy 600 dollar tax returns, mostly money borrowed from the Chinese, are good for the economy how? If you were above the argument you wouldn't have chimed in to begin with.
