They really need to give Kirk an eye patch like Panaka's. Also, the lack of a starship is a bold statement considering it allows for you to make up in your mind the magnitude of Panaka's starship. Captain Panaka rules!!! Love Live Panaka!!!

Star Trek V is a great film
by chrth
Mar 26th, 2008
07:41:31 PM
It just suffers from issues with its production. You have to watch the movie you don't see on the screen.

Funny tidbit about V: one of the trailers had a shot of the lead Klingon saying a Klingon word all menacing, like he was saying "FIRE!" or "ATTACK!" ... and then in the movie it turns out to be like "DOWN SCOPE!". That right there summarizes everything went wrong with ST:V.

"And when I directed Star Trek V, I got a great performancce out of myself because I respected myself as an actor so much"

Enterprise 4th season ranks up there
by chrth
Mar 26th, 2008
07:51:58 PM
I know the first two seasons were mostly lousy (although there were some great Andorian and Sussman eps in there), and the third, while having the best episode (Twilight), had consistency issues. The 4th, though, blows the rest of the series away (except for the Finale, WHICH DID NOT HAPPEN ... according to the Novel "The Good That Men Do"), and redeems the show in my mind.

So of course when the show hit its stride, the fuckers cancelled it.

"JJ Abrams is a charlatan film maker" - what, you mean he takes people's money to make a film but then never actually produces the film but runs off with the money? Wow. I could have sworn I saw Mission Impossible 3, by JJ Abrams. In fact, that clever trickster had me so damn fooled I even could have sworn it was a pretty good film. But since he's a 'charlatan filmmaker', obviously I was merely hypnotised or otherwise deluded. Either that or you're talking absolute shit and using bad English to do so.

The original series had an original look, Star Trek: TNG had a brilliant and original look, even the Enterprise E had a fairly original Gothic look in the TNG movies... but Voyager and Enterprise pissed all that away so they could look like generic sci-fi movies. This looks like the same deal. I don't know why dark and gray is considered "realistic." Apparently in the future we lose our ability to paint things and there's a shortage on light bulbs.

I guess time heals all wounds, and removes all objectivity, because there is not one single, solitary redeeming quality concerning that vile, floating turd. It "deserves more respect than it gets"? For what? For being an incomprehensible MESS? For having a budget three times that of "Khan", and still looking like shit? For that HILARIOUS scene where Scotty cracks his geriatric dome on the bulkhead? Or maybe that soooo sexy striptease that Uhura does? R-E-S-P-E-C-T? N-O! Actually, you DO have to "respect" Paramount on some level. For having the brass balls to not burn the negative once they saw the "finished" product, and for going ahead and actually releasing it. You know, it's no crime to love Star Trek unconditionally. It's creepy and sad, but no crime. Just... come on... You have to hold it accountable at SOME point, and be honest when it sucks. That movie... SUCKED. Be discerning customers, and don't pretend it's more than it is. That's like squinting at your 300 lb. cousin and saying: "You know, in the right light, with enough alcohol in my system, and, at the lowest point in my life, she kinda looks like Giselle Bundchen!" No, she doesn't.

I don't even hate Nemesis. I would gladly take a shitty TNG movie with the real cast than a good relaunch movie with a substitute cast. The actors are all still around(not to mention an opportunity to cameo actors from DS9), are we going to have to wait till this reboot moves 20 years into the future before we see Picard again, played by some teenage bald dude? Maybe the time meddling of J.J.'s movie will somehow fix the timeline so Data doesn't die. Otherwise I see no point to his film.

by ComputerGuy68
Mar 26th, 2008
09:23:07 PM
III was a cheap POS, and IV is terribly dated, and has even more stupid comedy than V. Remember Eddy Murphy was to have a cameo in it. The only one that felt like a real film was the first, the rest look like made for TV movies. Paramount fucked the franchise after the first film, TWOK had a tiny budget, but despite that a tremendous film was released, and Paramount still dicked us with poor budgets. When they finally put big bucks in the films, (last two NG ones), the good will had long vanished and look at the results of the box office.

Oh and wasn't ST:V released around Burton's Batman? Pure genius Paramount!

It was and remains dogshit. It was the equivalent of Superman IV without the heart and good intent. If this is an early adventure by Kirk & Co, then the familiar "Delta" shape is supposed to only stand for the Enterprise and its crew--other Starfleet ships have different insignias. If it's going to apply to all of Starfleet, and the timeline doesn't work right, some Trekkies are not going to be happy.

Star Trek Five was the funniest one.
by Napoleon Park

Anyone who doesn't get that Star Trek was a comedy should re-read David Gerrold's book on the making of The Trouble with Tribbles. And Star Trek V was the funniest of the movies. With "IV" a close second.

Seriously, name a better Star Trek parody. Okay, SNL's "The Last Voyage... " with Elliot Gould as the NBC suit sho cancels the series and Belushi as Kirk, I'll hand you that.

But name a better full length Star Trek parody with an actual plot. Urm, yeah, okay, "Galaxy Quest." Fine.

But name a better Star Trek parody done with the original cast in all their iconic roles. Yeah, okay, Mad Magazine's "Star Trek Musical", sure.

But name a funnier full length live action Star Trek parody starring and directed by members of the original cast. Ah-ha! See, I told you it was good. Vastly under-rated.

Well, okay, Four was funnier. "Double dumb ass on you." "Nuclear wessels."

Oh, and the one where Data says "Oh shit!," that was pretty funny too.

My favorite Star Trek V line:

"Go down to the end of this hall and turn right at the green screen."

And that didn't tell you it was a parody? Really?

While for the most part ST V is pretty bad (although I've always loved the bridge in this one) I don't think it can be denied that it's the best film for displaying the bond between Kirk, Spock and McCoy and the way they spend even their free time together. The only Trek film I truly despise is Nemeshit, it was irredeemably fucking awful.

JJ's film is going to suck balls too. And there isn't one rhinestone in any of those pictures, isn't this supposed to be Kirk's era???

What Star Trek 5 really needs is a special edition. The effects sucked so bad in that film. Give it remastered effects, and you would have a good Trek film. Oh, and cut out that scene of Scotty bumping his head, out of respect for Doohan. Thankyou!

Apart from the campfire scene, which is really quite good, that film is utter shite. In every way. Special effects? Crap. Script? Crap. Premise? Ludicrous. "So, in this film they look for God? I wonder how that will end?" Also can't believe there's not more love for The Search for Spock here. It's got some fucking superb Trek moments in it. Stealing the Enterprise, Kirk's reaction to his son's death, scuttling the ship and its plunge through the sky, Christopher Lloyd, the resurrection scene. Terrific movie. "The word is no. I am therefore going anyway."

There is a fine line between designing something that looks like it has a function, and something fantastic. We live in an age when strides in computer technology is done so quickly, think back just twenty years ago, and how the computer has evolved. Imagine thirty years from today, touch screens, nano tech, holograms, and things that are impossible to imagine. So flash forward to Star Trek's time, and we have...giant knobs on the shuttle craft. Sad that the 1960 show seem to feel more futuristic than what I have seen so far from this production. Giant work hats, bulky belts, looks more like Rosie the RIverter designed this film. I hope it all comes together. There is an element of fun, and futuristic thinking that goes along with the original show, this bare bones realistic russian space welder feels a bit strange, we will have to wait and see. I hope for the sake of the property it all comes together.

These pics are so innocuous, Paramount is such a bunch of cocks. I've been an STOS fan my whole life and have watched while they've bilked fans for every single cent they could while delivering the most consistantly sub-par/outright shitty, banged-out-for-the-buck product ever. ST single-handedly kept that fucking studio alive for years yet they have NO respect for the fans, none at all. Any buzz is good buzz and after people like Braga got done grinding the franchise into the dirt for years they are lucky people care at all. I'll still see it though, damn me..(lowering my head in well-deserved shame...)

These photos tell us so little about what we're actually seeing, it's pointless to complain. This will not look exactly like the 1960s tv series. Deal with it. This was the same problem we had with people complaining about the early looks at Transformers characters. Everyone spent so much time bitching about the authentic design of things and forgot to worry about the shitty script. "Oh my God! Why does something look dirty in Star Trek?" They're on a dirty planet. Maybe that's a dirty shuttle having nothing to do with Starfleet. I didn't realize a key component of the Star Trek universe was a spotless floor.

This is becoming a tradition, but it's the first time I've spoken about it. When did you AICN cats lose your testicles? From what I can tell, there is no protected material in those photos. Taking photos of things is no violation of copyright. A film company has no copyright privileges over how an object looks that will appear in their film, unless the material displaying that object is owned by the studio. (If someone snuck in and stole copyrighted footage, that's another story, basically.) In short, there's no compelling reason to remove the photos, and once upon a time AICN was THE site for that kind of material. Now, well, Harry and Mori have film deals going so telling someone like Paramount to fuck off when they ask to have the photos removed would be bad for business. I just wish someone else would take up the torch and go for this true undercover stuff. It seems like all the movie sites are now dependent on studios for their material so they just don't dare to piss one off in the interest of a scoop. I wonder if Drudge wants to open a movie site?

I'm not an all-round Star Trek fan, but I do enjoy the Shatner / Nimoy movies. I hadn't seen them in a long while so I bought the box set and watched one every couple of weeks or so. The Final Frontier is a really bad film, no question about it. Kind of just about watchable, but really it's just crap.

And further, these pics lack any sort of context at all, and as far as how the panels look, what are your chances of getting a tight shot of those anyway? McCoy used an old salt shaker to scan for wounds and have you ever had a REAL close look at the few, lame buttons Sulu would long-stroke, there was like 25 buttons on his console, he helmed the damn ship with like 6 movable switches, up and down. Add a couple cool button sounds and REALLY SELL IT. The dirty/dusty ass equipment won't matter at all in the end, the movie will be so dark you'll never see it.

But I rank the "bad" star trek movies on whether or not they had memorable scenes. Good ones, I mean. And honestly, there were quite a few in that movie. I liked that observation deck with the old nautical steering wheel. I liked the scene where Sulu crashes the shuttle craft into the Enterprise hangar. And for whatever reason, I like the scene with Bones, Spock, and Kirk in the elevator shaft, where Spock has these rocket boots on. When asked to grab on, Bones simply says "I'll take the next car". I don't know why I like that line but the way he delivers it is funny. And whenever I am confronted with getting on a crowded elevator, I say that. I would put it FAR above Insurrection.

The whole father dying thing where sybok reveals their pain. That movie has a LOT of great stuff in it and the only reason people repeat over and over that it's the worst is because, when it came out, it was...NOW though, there are at least 2 TNG movies that are worse, and V on it's own isn't as bad as one remembers. Watch it for yourself, it's pretty good. That being said, the pics look great to me - I love the old 1960's looking controls...if you don't get that that is what we need in a re-imagining, THE ORIGINAL SERIES ERA 1967 IN A MOVIE, then fuck you.
