Quantum of Solace, with Quantum being defined as a quantity or an amount, and Solace being defined as a form of comfort and relief in the midst of sorrow or misfortune... Basically just another way of saying something along the lines of "a measure of peace" or "shelter in the storm" or another similarly and often used phrase to describe something you cling to or find helpful during troublesome times. I can't say how this exactly fits into the plot of the film at this point - but the name itself doesn't seem as confusing and outrageous as so many have made it out to be.

...the producers said it had two meanings, that it tied into the film in some other way, they had to do with the mysterious something or other the film is all about that has to do with energy. I really hope there isn't some ridiculous quantum energy source involved. I thought the reboot was about ditching that sort of thing.

its confusing to me because you cannot measure solace, or comfort. A "measure of comfort", the saying, is a figurative term, where "measure" means some amount, any amount. A "quantum" is a fixed, undividable amount, implying that an emotions are set in discrete units, which is kind of weird. Basically, I am a science geek and word nerd, so it sounds strange to me to see an emotion quantified (no pun inteneded) into a set amount.

It's better than all the vaguely ambitious yet ultimately meaningless titles the series had been using. I like to think they had a Bond film title generator software program running, one that would arbitrarily choose words from three or four columns to create a cool sounding title that upon further scrutiny becomes sillier and sillier. . . some random combination of 'die', 'live', 'world' 'tomorrow', 'golden', 'love' and 'is.' It was pure chance we didn't end up with one called "To Die is Never Enough" or "No Tomorrow for love", or maybe simply "Goldenworld."

alphabet, I think the problem is that when most people here "quantum" they think of a science-related term, and probably don't know specifically what it means at that. "Quantum" as used in the title isn't exactly a commonly used term, so I think it throws some people off. It makes people think of quantum science, quantum leaps, etc. redkamel, I'm not specifically a "word nerd", but just from looking up the various dictionary definitions, it seems like a "quantum" as a fixed, undividable amount is only one definition. Other definitions seem to be simply "A quantity or amount." or "Something that can be counted or measured.". Measure or allotment or allowance are provided as synonyms for it. Based on that, it seems to me that it is perfectly valid to use it to refer to an unspecified "amount" or "measure" of solace, which I think was Ian Fleming's meaning when he used it as the title of a short story. I really don't think it has to indicate a discrete unit, especially in the non-scientific use, which is how it is being used here.

Precisely my thoughts on the matter. I guess I just tired of seeing everyone go bonkers over the title as if it makes their brain melt or something. I don't find it to be that puzzling of a phrase to use as a title - and I agree with what you noted concerning Fleming's intentions with the original title.

Be good if the title does have a double meaning - something to do with Quantum Physics. Perhaps Eon/Haggis were inspired by the Large Hadron Collider that will open at CERN this year - easy to worry about a machine that is expected to create tiny 'Wormhole' and possible tiny Black-holes. I imagine CERN won't won't feature since it will already be in Angels and Demons, which should be out around the same time as QoS. Anyhow, if 'Quantum' here has a scientific meaning as well as an emotional one then it's a great title and certainly anchors the plot in the real world

There's a reason Fleming used it for a short story and not a novel. It's a title about an idea, which is fine in short story form, as short stories can be much more experimental than what is expected of a commercial novel. If you say it enough times, it kind of sounds okay, but is Joe Public really going to feel comfortable trying to spit that title out when they pay at the box office. "Er..two tickets for Quantum of...Solace of Quantum...Something about Solace...Quantum Solaris... That James Bond movie with the stupid title, please!" And in the course of the movie, they're going to have to explain it. "Ah, good evening, Mister Bond. I see you have found my secret lair. This place, for me, is truly an oasis of peace in this arid landscape. Or, as I like to think of it, a quantum of solace in a world of chaos. You see what I just did there, explaining the title in an ever-so off-hand way. You know, oasis of peace equals quantum of solace. Do you get it, Mister Bond? Does it make sense now?" "No, not really. It's not a term that anyone would ever actually use. But since you're a european super-villain who doesn't abide by normal laws, I suppose we'll just have to swallow it."

I also thought the title could refer to "A small amount of comfort" in regards to Vesper betraying Bond. Her betrayal was actually a sacrifice. Perhaps the revenge mission Bond will no doubt be on in this flick is providing him with such cold comfort. Just a thought. Anyway - can't wait for the movie.
