1% failure rate...

What does that mean, exactly? 1% of PS3's completely fail totally ? Or only 1% have a few bugs. Thing is, they know no-one is ever going to check these stats so you can't trust them. For what it's worth, I've had a good experience with Pioneer. My 515 DVD player is NINE years old, and it still works perfectly. Plays discs from all regions. Maybe their blu-rays are good. It sounds like anyone purchasing a PS3 needs to get a 2-year guarantee, at least.

This long rant about Drew's misfortune at not being able to watch Blu-Ray discs and hence review them, is one big ruse to ensure he gets a free PS3 from Sony or get his PS3 back sharpish. His rant is for personnel gain, as soon as Sony see this, they will send him a new PS3 so he keeps praising the machine. Cyncial view ? Perhaps, but his last paragraph practically calls Sony's bluff not to send him a new PS3.

More than anything, I'm looking for suggestions from you guys for what kind of machine I should go buy. And, yes, with my very own money.

Customer Service is the uniting force of crap-ness with most electronics brands and it's great that Mori is actively highlighting this with his own experiences. You shell out a few hundred bucks for a piece of hardware which should be fun, then when it fucks up getting it sorted is a nightmare. Not only is it a pain having to send the unit back, but being patronised and treated like a dick by the staff really puts the boot in. I had to return my kids Wii because the graphics card went tits up. Went to all the hassle of packaging it up, promised the kids it would be back soon. Some nut-sack at Nintendo sends the thing back 2 days later un-repaired and with no explanation. I'm not expecting miracles, but at least show some god-damned manners when dealing with your customers. They obviously think that they shift enough units that it won't hurt if they piss of a few people. I for one am glad Moriarty can use his position to stand up for the little guy, and if he gets a new PS3 for his troubles all power to him.

that rant was clearly you trying to get a free ps3 and probabaly some free games or blurays from sony just to shut you up. I feel bad that your Ps3 crapped out but it is a machine and some of them will do that. A 1% fail rate is not bad considering how many of these things are manufactured. Besides you're mr Big shot hollywood king of castle DVD reviewer, why not use your piles of money and just buy a new one

No way you got a new machine on the first swap. Companies don't do that anymore, they just send you refurbs. And guaranteed your lemon will end up in someone else's hands eventually. UPS and Fedex are making a killing transporting these bad machines from one screwed customer to another. 1% failure is unacceptable considering the cost of these machines. Good luck on the 2nd swap.

I kinda feel your pain, Moriarty. The quick fix? Easy, DON'T PAY YOUR TAXES! :~) Seriously though, I just went through something somewhat similar but not with the PS3. Three weeks ago I FINALLY disconnected my VCR from my home theatre and went out and bought a Sony BDP-S300 Blu-ray player. Had no problem hooking it up and was quite impressed with what I saw from the three Blu-ray discs I had. Then I started to check out my DVDs to see how they looked and when I put in the third disc, the menu came onscreen and the backround music was heard but nothing else worked. Well, almost nothing. The movie would not begin to play when I pressed 'Enter', nor could I get access anything else on the menu either. In fact, only two buttons worked -- 'Stop' and 'Open/Close', so at least I was able to retrieve the disc. Feeling absolutely no desire to unhook evrything and return the player to Best Buy, I called Sony instead where I was informed that they would be sending me out a new firmware disc (my notebook doesn't have a DVD burner), this new one Version 3.8. The disc arrived three days later and thirty minutes after I received it I had a fully working BDP-S300 (i.e. that disc played) and I became a satisfied customer. The thing is, it wasn't a new DVD that wouldn't play -- it was a DVD that was released back in 2005. Why my Blu-ray player couldn't play it without the firmware update is beyond me. Oh well, at least the problem was fixable.

I got so sick of XBox 360 after reluctantly giving in to Microsoft coz I was a diehard Sony fan but wanted to experience next Gen gaming. Anyway I purchased a 360 last Jan and in just over a year have had the unfortunate experience of losing 4!!! to different faults each time (and never even had the RRofDoom!) so luckily when my 4th machine broke I was still able to get a full refund on the reciept and swapped it for a PS3.

Oh! My! God! it was like a breath of fresh air from the Gods! When i turned it on to be greeted with a really nice orchestral boot-up noise, great set-up system, Blue-ray player! and NO INDUSTRIAL FAN NOISE!!! It used to piss me off big time every time my XBOX fucked after only a few months but what really annoyed me was having to put the fucking subtitles on most movies I watched at night because I couldn't have the volume loud enough to get over the machines Turbo Engines for fear of waking my kids and the neighbours up.

I really feel for you man! I had enough of shitBox£60's constant fucking up probably coz it got internally Hotter than my toaster and After getting the PS3 I am sooo happy with the machine and the fact that Blue-Ray has won out over HD and I basically got a decent Blue-Ray player and amazingly user friendly media systems that was a doddle to hook up to my WI-FI and I can now try out the connectivity of my PSP to it too so the future's bright!

Your story doesn't fill me with much reasurance but I trust Sony more than Microsoft so fingers crossed! Hope you the best with your replacement machine and don't lose the faith it's a good year to own a PS3!

Mori, I have to agree with the sentiment of others. I've had nothing but crashes and breaks with Sony. Remember having to turn the PS1 upside down to make it work? I have had incredible reliability out of Toshiba, but I'm waiting for the price to drop more before throwing cash on a BR-Player. Speaking of taxes, can't you write off a BR player as a business expense? You are a media reviewer...sort of. I mean, considering this site hardly ever posts reviews with even a modicum regularly anymore.

There is no excuse for this. You best bet would have been to wait for you working unit, but nooooo. The only reason is for you to write this is for you to get something out of Sony you cheap sob. The Sony guy was right... and he should have kept with his original comment. In this case the customer is defo wrong. And come back to me and bitch when you've had 5 360's break on you, you muppet. I have two PS3's. On JPN original and a UK orignal (got it free with Epson 1080p PJ) and neither have had any problems... not so much as a crash. Maybe you should look after you equipment better? I would hate to think if you had a 360... you'd probably be on your 1000000000th.

The main point is that Sony is replacing your machine - twice. How is that bad customer service? Sorry your replacement was bad, but as someone mentioned, they usually send a refurb, and with electronics shit happens. It sounds like you are mad because Sony would not kiss your ass and admit to your opinion that their system sucks. And BTW - it's your own fault that you review discs for a living and only have one BRD player. That's like a professional photographer only taking one camera on gigs and crying when it breaks.

I bought a PS3 on launch day. Brought it home, and it ended up that every video out was broken. Just complete static and wavy lines. This was using HDMI, Component and Composite. Called Sony support, and the technician joked that I may be the first PS3 customer with a broken PS3. Lucky me. Sent it in for repair, got another, then sold it. Haven't bought another yet. I do like the firmware updates and some oft he features, but I'm waiting on a price drop.

Plus when one of my mates 360 RROD he sent it to them with a note saying please send it back quick as he'd just purchased Assassins Creed the day it died. If you read the tech-news, you'll see a lot of chat about wi-fi, dropped packets, latency and so on and so forth. Like other wi-fi devices, the PS3 can suffer packet drops, etc. Here's my advice... Never perform a PS3 system update over a wi-fi connection. Go buy yourself a CAT-5 cable, move your PS3, or do whatever it takes to ensure the update takes place over a cabled connection. After seeing some strange behaviour over wi-fi at home, I've got myself a wired connection and have never had a problem with PS3 downloads or updates. Here's a good example of the inherent problems of wi-fi, latency and PS3 (all thrown in together)... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =FCiL4QnwbUs&feature=related Take my advice and enjoy your (next) PS3.

To us... film fans. HD is a dream come true, it's like the crack cocaine of DVD. Unfortunately the rest of the population is made of people who occassionally, watch, buy or rent a DVD. The kind of people who keep Adam Sandler employed and ensured a Pink Panther sequel. So although it's gonna be way bigger than Laserdisc for sure (or at least I hope) it's probably still gonna be a minority format, don't start holding you breath for rare and obscure film to surface on Blueray and you can forget the majority of TV titles unless it's filmed on high quality film... a la Trekkie.

I have never seen such a bunch of sony fanboy bitches in all my life. The XBox 360 has a problem and you guys are all over it saying sue them etc. Now that there is an inkling of a problem with the PS3 or at the very least 2 that died with one person and you start blaming the "Customer". The fact that the Sony rep even came up with an attitude such as mori experienced is the true problem. Its never the company's fault any more it's the customers. At least Microsoft had the balls to pony up to their problem and put money behind making it better. Mori sent his back and most defintely ended up with someone elses broken PS3. Instead of them admitting it (factory repair mode??) they try and blame him and basically accuse him of lying based on the slander comment. WTF? And before any of you little pimply assed 14 year olds even think about saying something, I have both a 360 and a PS3. I have not had a problem with my PS3 (other than almost no decent games) but I have had (1) one RROD and have had my 360 nearly since release. Neither of these companies has sterling reputations in the customer service arena and both of them get red marks for even attempting to claim the customer might be responsible for their systems failures. You Sony fanboys need to relax and should be behind any one of us getting screwed over by a faceless corp like Sony or any other corp for that matter. These companies make plenty of money and they aren't in this for you, so when they make a mistake they are SUPPOSED To make it right, we shouldn't feel privelaged when they fix their broke ass machine. I don't really care about Blu-Ray, I like games. And 360 is still where the games are, unless you like 6 month gaps between big games. It is true that the 360 has a large failure rate. I've not experienced this problem, but if MS replaces a broken one with a working one...what's the problem?
Stand-alone Blu-ray is a foolish buy right now.
by DirkBelig
Mar 25th, 2008
09:02:20 AM
Because Blu-ray was rushed out the door with incomplete features - unlike HD DVD which shipped with finished features which won't be universal on BD for several months - any stand-alone BD deck you buy now will be obsolete within six months and you'll have to rebuy. Sony was very savvy/evil in making their game console the future-proofed device so that people seeking he-def movies will figure they may as well play some games on their $400 gadget. The problem is that all the early adopters who went stand-alone before Profile 2.0 was mandatory will be SOL w/o a PS3.

Too bad for gamers though seeing as the PS3 is a gimped and overcomplicated hunk of junk that gets the worst versions of multi-platform titles like The Orange Box (terrible frame rate problems; same as EA Sports titles), Splinter Cell: Double Agent (horrid graphics) and Rainbow Six Vegas 2 (broken multi-play) are but a few of the total failures on the PS3. The fanboys love to babble on about the Cell Processor and 50GB BD discs, but they're just fanboys, not sane people.

Yes, the Xbox 360 has spotty reliability and is louder than a jet engine, but it's got GAMES and the best versions of multi-platform games and tons of killer exclusives. If you want to play games, get a 360. If you want to watch movies, get a PS3. If you want to do both, you have to get both. The PS3 is simply too compromised and difficult to code for to ever have more than a handful worthy titles. Otherwise, wait until late this year to buy a standalone BD player.

And one other thing...

Microsoft's 360 is a total piece of junk, its had more problems than Brittney Spears. I have one and its slowing down like a typical windows based machine too. It's one of those twilight zone customer service experiences where you have to shake your head a few times, bang it against a wall, smack it like Curly, and then remember that, OH YEAH, I'M THE CUSTOMER... I haven't had this situation with Sony as I don't own a PS3, but I have to say that it does seem like this machine is STILL being overhyped all over and that the verdict isn't really in yet. As a BD player, great, that's awesome, but there are already stand-alone players that I think you're better off with if you already have a gaming system and don't even play the one you have that much. But just seeing Mori using this site to get his opinion out there, good or bad, and to WARN people of the potential suckiness of the PS3 warms my heart. My whole thing stems more from my experience with BD last night for the first time, rather than Sony itself.

Here's my deal - I, just yesterday, bought a LG BH200, the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray combo player which I absolutely love. I think that if LG actually delivers on a BD 2.0 firmware update to this player (they've already delivered on an entire boatload of other promises with firmware updates so far), then it could be hard to beat. The KICKER is that while this thing was going for over $800 just two months ago, I picked mine up at Best Buy for $550. I already had 40 HD DVD's and a Toshiba A3. I wanted to get into Blu-ray, but I also wanted another HD DVD player to hedge my bets against an equipment malfunction and also to get HD DVD in 1080p when I eventually get a better set. After a ton of research on this player, it became clear that it's hard to beat if you already have HD DVD, and even if you already have blu-ray, you could take advantage of the HD DVD fire sales, plus have a player that does 24hz, 1080p, streaming of all the audio codecs (via recent unofficial firmware update), and it's BD 1.1 with a gig of hard drive space and an ethernet connection, making it 2.0 upgradeable. Someone even came up with a hack to make it a region free DVD player.

So, after loving HD DVD since last November and picking up some AWESOME titles, I ran down to Blockbuster to rent my first BD titles just to finally check out the victor's format. I picked up No Country for Old Men and Ratatouille, 2 titles I had heard were reference quality in BD. Popped them in and while I found Ratatouille pretty impressive, I got the feeling it had more to do with the fact that it's a computer animated film that was originated digitally, so it SHOULD look amazing with hardly any compression down to what amounts to a 2k disc. But after hearing about No Country on High-Def digest as being the end-all, be-all of HD discs, I was a bit disappointed.

Is it just me or has anyone else who was looking at HD DVD for months and then went to BD had this experience? To me, NCFOM on BD looked like a really, really good DVD, rather than the quality I saw in Zodiac on HD DVD. That, to me, is still the best looking thing I've seen on disc. I'll have to watch other BD's, but I have to say, I was not all that impressed. I didn't see the insane clarity I saw in my HD DVD of Dog Day Afternoon, where I could read signs across the street from the bank and pieces of paper hanging on the wall that were previously just blurry messes on DVD. I didn't see that on Blu-ray, and I'm kinda disappointed. I also feel that HD DVD's menu experience is FAR superior to BD, which feels like some hacked, slightly superior rehash of regular DVD. I love the pop-up menus in HD DVD... something just feels right about them.

Oh well... hopefully it gets better, or maybe i'ts just me... believe me, though, nobody wanted to pop in a blu-ray and get blown away more than myself. Maybe my expectations were just too high... maybe Paramount set the bar with Zodiac and they didn't get enough credit for it, whereas No Country continues to get credit where it doesn't even deserve it. Btw, imho, Jesse James, Zodiac, and There Will Be Blood were all better, deeper films than No Country For Old Men.

I gotta say though, that no matter what BD does, now owning a player, I KNOW in my heart that the better format lost. C'est la vie...

While both Sony and Microsoft have had their share of defective machines, at least Microsoft has the balls to tell the truth in the matter! My cousin's machine died in a manner very similar to the one described in this article! He updated, restarted, and - BANG - it was broken! Sony's response: "This only happens in very rare, about 1%, of cases." This is a fine excuse -- until you become the statistic!

HOW TO FIX X-BOX AUDIO LEVEL
by g-ride9000
Mar 25th, 2008
10:12:47 AM
Since there are different audio output from the x-box360 we will discuss each separately.

#1 RCA, this one is easily solvable, there is a device available at some pro audio shops and the internet, it is called a "Pad" and it will decrease the level of signal flowing to your amp/tv/speakersystem. You will need one for left channel and one for right channel

If you experience this with your digital system the problem is different. The output is finite in the digital relm and the signal is information and can not be brought up or down in volume via pad. So you must make sure your audio setting are correct and your light pipe cable is(the important part)NOT BENT. It is optical and needs to send a light signal. Distortion from source can blow speakers even if the volume is low.

part 2
by g-ride9000
Mar 25th, 2008
10:18:43 AM
if you get distortion from your x-box digital out after seeing about both Xbox output and amp input settings and your cable is good then you must see about witch is the problem. Does the input work with the same cable while using a different source? No use a different cable with the same test. If both test are successful in getting clean signal, then you must have your xbox repaired. if you guys dont like that buy a fucking checker board or a acoustic guitar.

Mar 25th, 2008
10:26:28 AM
Firmware is the most basic shit in any computer system. There are a few thing that are essential if you are upgrading the firmware, check this out. You need a hard wire connection to your device, wireless inturpt will kill your machine. You must have consistent power, or your machine will die. You must have a consistent internet connection. The best is to install from disc. Anything that goes wrong with a firmware update will KILL your device. That is because it tells the computer to sent the wrong amount of electricity to the wrong part of the delicate circuit board on startup of the device and ZAPP fuckin branigan your shit is toast. This is no replacement for either hard format but if you gat a good computer you can watch up to 1080p on you comp. There is compression, and only some have digital surround. You can download a Torrent on Piratebay or youtorrent of No Country for Old Men. Then after the torrent has run its cycle and you have an 8 gig moive on your drive. You might have to use a program to de-compress the files, most .rar format. There are plenty of free progams out there, I use unrarX for mac. To play back these files you need a player. On mac the Mplayer works great, but sucks on my living room PC. I use VLC player on my PC and it has some buffer problems, but honestly the distortion can be amazingly cool. This is a 4 year old dell, the 2008powerbook runs the movies flawlessly. AnyDVD-HD seems to be the riping program of choice. Good luck people, have fun and don't download illegal content!

I feel your pain. You describe what I have witnessed and experienced first hand. Except not with the PS3. I went through the exact same thing when the PS2 came out. Same "player plays great for 6 months then laser goes bad" issue. It was after that last experience I convinced myself that I would never purchase a 1st generation Sony video game console again. Since then I wait till they work out all the bugs, lower the price and release the second generation system. It works out best for all concerned. Sony has gone the way of Microsoft and has begun using the public to work out most of their bugs for them. It saves them money and time and they get you to pay them to work out the stuff they should have worked out themselves. I'll never fall for it again.

That you seem to have such a weak grasp of failure rates Mor... All electronics have failures. And someone is going to have 2 or 3 or 4 fail. It's about chance of failure. The simple fact is PS3 (and Wii and most other electronics) have what are considered acceptable levels of failure while some equipment (Xbox 360 is the obvious comparision) do not. So of course some people will have 360's that have never failed - remember if it has this supposed 30% or so failure rate that means that 70% of owners haven't had a failure. PS3 I believe is around 1% or so or even less. I've had my PS3 brick and so what? I'm one of the unlucky ones - you're one of the even unluckier ones... and there are people out there with a 360 or a Saumsung or whatever that are even unluckier. There is no zero percent failure with electronics so its crazy to go looking for an alternative that's better. So far as I can see from a search of reliability you're still better off with a PS3 for BR than anything else!

Loved this concept and can't believe that BD won... the real boneheads are at Toshiba, who did ZERO work educating the consumer. Yeah, so these will play in your other players as well... and we've got a great upscaler. The end... What morons devise these campaigns that they actually do roll out? The consumer wants to know a few simple things - why do I want this and what can it do for me? Why is it worth the price?

Put another way, do you expect to have to pay customers for each days work you do? No, so don't get so sore, in addition, he has every right to be frustrated with Sony.

Imagine you were at work(first imagine you had a job - some of you) then that you have a stack of work, but you can't do it because the machine you use breaks and you need to get it replaced, and the company send you a new one that tanks within 5 mins of opening it.

They then have the gall to call you a slanderer for wanting to mention that it happened.

I used to be a big Sony fan until last generation I went through 3 PS2's that got "Disk Read Errors" naturally on their own because of bad lenses. So yeah I had very bad luck with Sony last gen. This time around I am still on my launch 360 and PS3 with no problems. I honestly hardly hear of any rampant problems with PS3 like you hear with 360 and frankly I'm more concerned when my 360 will go kaput than my PS3. Heck I've had my PS3 on non-stop since last August between playing games and folding@home... no problems. Also sending a console out to get referbed is pretty much asking for more problems. All they do is send you sloppy seconds from some previous repair when I'd rather just get a warranty at a store to begin with and return for a brand new one. When you been gaming with POS consoles for over 20 years, you should know by now that without a warranty - if you send your console back to the company, you get back a repaired product with a high chance of failing again. Sorry you hear about your luck Drew, it just sounds like that was it. However that douche at Sony customer service needs to apologize.

You know, I am sorry. Really. I mean, to depend on your income with movie reviews (and adrevenue from clicks and such). And your reviews, albeit amusing, have some cred. But, you should have a dedicated DVD(BR too) player and a backup. Don't dis Sony for their one percent that you are part of, for your problems. You are depending on a piece of electronics that was planned to be replaced, eventually. So without surprise, I leave you to your rant. And remember, the average PS3 owner doesn't put their machine through the abuse you do. Nor do most depend on it for revenue. Perhaps you can get save your pennies for a Samsung or other BluRay player(s) that will not fail you "in your time of greed, er need". Goodbye.

I had two PS2 machines, I had one for a year and a half when the laser went out on it. Then I bought another one, I had it for 13 months and its laser died too. I wasn't a huge gamer at that time (I use my 360 a lot more now) so it wasn't dead from overuse. Sony did nothing to repair it since they were over a year old. I vowed right there and then never to buy another playstation anything. I will say this about 360, even though a lot of people have suffered the RROD (including me) at least 360 has been good about taking care of people, extending warranties and making sure the turn around on repair is pretty quick (I had a 5 day turn around on mine). I'm sorry to hear that you're having such troubles man, it really can be frustrating. Also, when customer "service" agents are pricks, it never helps. I think that all stems from the fact that people that work on those kinds of jobs are usually people waiting to get their "real" job someday, so they don't give a shit if they get fired for treating you like crap.

Mori...I spent part of my jaded past as an engineer for a pro A/V firm. We did arenas, clubs, airports, and radio and TV studio deals. So, not clueless as are most out here today. The PS3 is a nice piece of hardware, but frankly, it's a miracle it works at all. I could go into why, but this isn't SlashDot! OK, I've read good things about the latest Samsung players and I watched a BRD on one at Best Buy the other day. Hardly a great place to evaluate something, but I didn't see any issues and it seemed to load and navigate quicker than a PS3. (My son and his friends are PS3 freaks...they hack theirs to play bootleg Bolivian porn and the like) Depending on store and return policy, you could go buy a new BRD player, watch every review DVD, etc. you can in 29 days, then return it on Day 30. Or keep it if tax man is kind and you like it.

some people continue using a PS3 as a home theatre Blu-Ray player system. Didn't anyone learn from the PS2? These things keep breaking down if you use them as movie players on a regular basis!!! I firmly believe that the Blu-ray (and previosuly dvd) components inside these gaming systems are very inferior and only intended for OCCASIONAL usage when using as a movie player. In the PS2, it was basically one of those $29.00 dvd players you see at Wal-Mart, built into the Playstation = it will eventually wear down and break down from daily usage BUT Sony would never tell you this. The built in Blu-Ray player on the PS3 is no different; it's a cheap caliber Blu-Ray player. Think about it. If the player on the PS3 were as good as the stand alone Blu-Ray players, wouldn't the PS3 be worth a lot more than they're selling for? Shit, Sony's entry level Blu-Ray players start at $399 so what makes you think that for $100 more you will get the same quality as THAT stand alone player PLUS get a gaming system, hard drive, etc. You're not!!!! The Blu-Ray player in the PS3 made cheaply because it's a cost driven equation. On the otherhand, it seems that if you only use the PS3 for gaming, the units keep on ticking because that is what they were truly intended for. I too tried using the PS2 as my sole dvd player for about a two month period and before I knew it, the player broke down. I learned my lesson and realized, that you just can't mix gaming and movies until Sony starts building the player with the same quality components that they use on their stand alone players. Stop being cheap and buy yourself a nice stand-alone Blu-Ray player for what it was intended for; to play movies and continue using your PS3 for what it was really intended for; to play games, and I bet you will never have these problems.
If you had a launch 360, you'd probably be on...

third one right now, like me. Just sayin'. Sony had extremley crappy hardware the last generation, but in this round they traded with MS.
And screw the talk about the dedicated player, the PS3 is still the best player available if you look at the feature set (and not even counting the games functionality).
Thanks, Mori

Thank you for the update - based on the lovejoy you and Harry had spread all over the PS3, I had seriously considered buying one, even though my interest in gaming is limited, and Halo is one of only a handful of titles I'm really excited about. So now I know - blu-ray player, and an Xbox if it feels worth it. Some animation friends I have have fawned over Bioshock so much, and I was such a slut for Halo, that it might be worth it, but the PS3 is no longer in the running for me.

Your entire argument for buying a "dedicated" Blu-Ray player is bunk. PS3 games ARE Blu-Ray discs, so how is this not a "dedicated" player? Same applies to the PS2, how was that not a "dedicated" DVD player when 90% of PS2 games were DVDs? I have had a PS3 launch day (waited 40 hours outside of a Target for it, yes I am fanboy) and I have yet to experience a single problem with my system. I use it at least 5 or 6 days out of every week since I purchased it. I watch movies (Blu-Ray & DVD), play games (PS3 & PS2) and make extensive use of it's network capabilities. My PS2 was purchased 1 month after it's introduction as well, and has never even had a disc read error. I understand that this experience is mine alone, but it has been an overwhelmingly positive one. This is just intended to offset the wave of negativity towards the PS3 in this talkback, and no, unfortunately I am not a Sony "plant". Hey, Mori, it could have been worse, you could be stuck with an obsolete HDDVD player! Now, excuse me while I download PS3 firmware 2.20 and hunt for new features...

Combo disks haven't been anywhere near the success you think they have. First of all they up the price by about 5 bucks and second the failure rate/recalls of combos have been alarmingly high in the short period they've been around. To be fair though no higher I guess than the SD DVD fuckups that are still happening 10 years later. And BD IS introducing that digital backup or whatever it's called, giving you a standard def copy. I think you can copy it to PSPs and iPods but I'd have to go look it up.

Also, your whole "I thought BDs would be good but DH-DVDs are better isn't even based on logic, let alone any apples-to-apples comparison. What you need to do to settle that one is first of all find out whether the film/theatrical version was 'soft' or grainy or lacking in colour range/heavily colour graded/lousy sound/whatever in the first place. For instance the amount of morons here that are outraged about paying for pristine digital high-def and getting grain is hilarious as it demonstrates their farcical ignorance. If the film is fucking grainy then the HD version SHOULD be grainy, not cleaned up/smoothed out or edge enhanced or any of that DNR crap. It should be as true to the original as possible. The other thing beyond their understanding is that some filmmakers choose a grainy stock ON PURPOSE, letting the texture of the image suit the tone of the movie. And some films are fucking soft. Like anything with Mae West in it! Don't make the same mistake as these cretins. Different films from different decades hold up better or worse, and age doesn't necessarily have everything to do with it. # strip technicolour or B&W have a better chance at looking pristine than many of the slightly experimental film stocks of the 60s and 70s for reasons I won't bore you with here.

Secondly, you can't compare disparate films on the two formats and surmise that therefore one format is better than the other! Apples and oranges, dude. Especially considering you're one guy who can do a true apples-to-apples comparison - you can get both the HD-DVD version and the BD of the same title and really tell who did the better job. Although you may come to the realisation that with a few caveats, the video codecs are the same on BOTH which is why you were seeing the same (bit-for-bit) VC-1 picture on both. It's not generally the platforms as much as the mastering. Even within just Blu-ray itself there can be differences in say, the U.S. BD and the German BD of Pan's Labyrinth. It's the transfer. The German one was done separately and actually is better quality.

And despite Michael Bay's flip-flopping, 300 (the movie itself not the extras although there'll be a new BD version with better extras like the PIP thing) is pixel-for-pixel the same on both platforms. Conceivably BD could have used even the same codec but at a higher rate to take advantage of the extra space but in reality it makes sense that if they can both play the same codecs then the studio will just use the same transfer. Why spend more money if you don't have to?!

I admit my bias is different to yours though. I personally don't want to watch the SD version if I can be watching HD. Maybe the commentary or something but even storyboards and concept art piss me off because 1080p is the only thing that does them justice - that stuff at SD is a joke. And I certainly don't want to pay the extra for the so-called privilege. I can just rent the SD and burn it for less if I really wanted to.

But technology breaks; even GOOD technology. I hardly ever hear about PS3s failing... but it happens. It happened to SNES, Genesis, and all the great consoles that everyone is so nostalgic about (and you DO remember blowing on the NES cartridges, don't you?). NOTHING is as bad as the Xbox 360's failure rate. I've replaced two... two other people I know have replaced theirs. It's a great system, don't get me wrong, but don't compare it's failure rate to the MINUTE failure rate of PS3s.

Actually, my first one had the RROD, so I sent it off, and bought a new elite. Now my elite is messed up, not a RROD, but on several games, it just locks up and freezes. I haven't had a problem yet with my PS3, but I know I will. I went through 2 Playstations, and 3 Playstation 2's, so I know it is coming.

Insiders say the 360 is history and all new games are being developed on the ps3 first and ported to 360.I have both and when I'm done with my 360 games i'll likely by ps3 only if there's a choice. It's almost neck and neck quality wise-you could say the ps3 has better audio for games.Dts drakes fortune can be cranked up to thx reference level.Try that with 360 and you'll split the earth in half with high pitched horror.Ps3 does 1080p for assasins creed-360 just 720.Add in built in blueray,Internet,no fees, hardrive, real music server that works and sounds great,etc-it's easy to see why the 360 is history.
ITS ALL ABOUT THE DEFECTS PEOPLE...

Its known as a bit of a myth but I belive it to be true. The machines of this generation are built with defects for one purpose only...to sell more units. Sony's been doing this shit for years. I never got into the the playstation brand myself, I was all for Nintendo but all my friends did and lets just say one of said friends went through six of the fuckers and another went through four. it was funny though because I noticed that they all seemed to break around the 18 month mark. I used to laugh and think, no fucking wonder Sony won that generation, every fucker must of at least owned two in their lifetime. You see because they were cheap and people didnt realize their rights they just thought ah fuck it, its not worth the shit, I will buy a new one, hense the huge fucking sales. I myself waited and got an XBOX the day they relesed it here, which was March 2002 and do you know what the fucker still works to this day without any problems. Now I think Microsoft must of had wind of Sonys sneaky tacticks and thought right then time to have a piece of this pie, so they built defects into the 360 (which I also got the day of relese) i.e the RROD. But it kind of backfired because these machines seemed to break everywhere at the same time which forced Microsoft into a corner which then cost them hundreds of millions. I actually think Microsoft done us all justice in telling all customers to return there broken 360's and also refunding any customers who paid for damages before the anouncment. Now it seems to be starting with the PS3, Lets see if Sony has the same kind of heart.

Make sure it's a profile 2.0 player. These should be out very soon. Or keep your PS3. It's a reliable machine, it just so happened that you got fucked twice which is incredibly rare. If you hate going through this with Sony's PS3. You definately don't want the chances that come with a 360. PS3 just got updated last night to Profile 2.0 for blu-ray as well as updates to DivX playback and other features. Some people have indeed experienced the same problem as you have with their PS3. Hopefully you next one works well, and let this be a lesson... Do >NOT< update the firmware over a wireless connection. Chances are this is what fucked up the machine's OS...

Best 'insider' scoop ever. For what it's worth, that's the biggest load of shit you'll ever hear. 360 is, and will be for some time, the lead SDK in many development studios. It's easier to develop for and cuts time dramatically; games are like any business...time is money.

Oh and BTW, assasins creed runs at 1080p on 360 with either VGA or HDMI attatched. But even then, like the PS3 version, it's an upscaled image (it was developed on a 360 SDK for one thing). To my knowledge, there are NO games on either platform that are developed to have a dedicated 1080p resolution.

As for the PS3 BluRay laser, i've heard similar reports about drive mechanisms jamming and being faulty. There's a company in the UK selling replacement units for about £20..that's not for the drive but rather the bit that sits inside it. Still sucks tho.

If you want a stand alone player, you can't go wrong with the S500..pricey but awesome.

Your keen (and oh so welcome) observations aside, I come to AICN because I trust certain writers on this board (Mori, Quint, Herc, Vern) as valuable and trustworthy guides to what's gonna please me and what's not in my search for entertainment. Too bad HD lost, but I'm not picking up a BD player until Christmas, as much as I want HiDef movies, but it's just too expensive and who knows what you're getting or whether it'll be update-able unless you get a PS3? Between 360 and TV I'm cool.
by ZeroCorpse

Games on the Xbox 360, and movies in HD on the TV. I've also ripped all my DVD movies onto the TV's hard drive, so I can start them up instantly, in upscaled 720p. The TV (when used in conjunction with Handbrake) makes it so DVDs like Velvet Goldmine or Showgirls which are in non-anamorphic letterbox format will show up properly on the 16:9 screen, unlike they do when they're on a DVD player (in that case, you get bars on all sides. With TV and Handbrake, the bars are removed where possible).

I'll grab a PS3 or Blu-Ray player when there are no more DVDs on the shelves for me to buy. Otherwise, I don't see a point. For the few movies I do care to watch in HD, I can download the HD version from Xbox Live Video Marketplace, or from the iTunes store. For everything else, upscaled to 720p is fine with me.

And I know that if the TV craps out, Apple will be quick to fix it for the next three years. The Xbox 360 also has a 3-year warranty, so I'm not really worried about the RROD (besides, I've had one since launch, and even though I sold that one, it never RROD in the two years I had it. My new one has the new mainboard and chipset, so it probably won't RROD either.)

Blu-Ray just isn't compelling yet. `Maybe later, when I don't have any other choice...

Man, I love this site (and am routinely frustrated by it) as much as the next guy, but when I read a whiny thing like this it kinda pisses me off. I know these guys get free shit so they can "review" it so the studios can pick and choose the most positive "reviews" to promote their products. I've come to terms with it. What galls me is somebody having, well, the gall to complain about not being able to watch all the free cool shit he's been sent from studios, to promote their product.

This is hippocracy. I use these reviews, very often, to determine what I should rent or buy. So why am I so irked? Most likely because it feels kinda like that kid who always had the newer, better toys than you, who would tell you about them in vivid detail, but wouldn't share.

I have a feeling Mori would share with all of us if he could, but damn dude, take our feelings into consideration! We pay for our shit.

P.S. You might want to call customer care and complain about that person who claimed you were "slandering" Sony's unimpeachable product. You might get some more free shit out of it.

First of all, from a purely consumer standpoint, the recall of the combo discs isn't the point. The point was that the capability was there. If Toshiba had really let the consumer know that that difference existed, it would have made a difference in the sales. I can't understand why companies who have a clear advantage with a product believe they have to get madison avenue on people and gussy it up with fancy bullshit when just the facts would do. I guess to justify a high advertising budget or to justify not having one at all, which is what Toshiba seems to have done. Following the logic about failure rates that you mentioned, though, I would never have even bought a BD player after hearing about all of the problems people have. But I love watching movies in HD and I'll be damned if I'm gonna be last on my block to have one.

When it comes to comparing images, I work in the business as an editor. I stare at high def images all day long in DVCPro HD, HDV, 2k, etc. as well as standard def by way of betacam SP, digi, etc. I know the differences in source materials and I've shot on 35mm film and had it transfered to miniDV, DVD, etc. and sat in on color corrections or color corrected myself, even though it's been limited experience with Avid and mostly with Final Cut's three-way. I know what I'm looking at and what I'm talking about. You're right about what you're saying, it's just that I think you're misinterpreting some of what I said.

I wrote THE SAME EXACT post elsewhere about all these idiots complaining about grain and lack of pristine colors and "oh the colors in The Deer Hunter on HD DVD and BD don't pop! not a good example for your high-def player!" I completely agree with you. These arguments show the ridiculousness of certain segments of HD fans and the techno geeks that complain about such things. I just want, like with Dog Day Afternoon, to see the image exactly as it would look off of a fresh film print. I've seen Dog Day (sorry to keep using the same example) in the theater twice, and that HD DVD is about as close as I've seen to a theater experience in the home. Zodiac on HD DVD actually surpassed what I saw in the theater, probably because it was shot in uncompressed HD on the viper and was inherently digital in the first place. The point of it is that I don't see Transformers and Resident Evil as the reason for HD, I just see them as something for non-cinephile rich people to show off their systems to their friends. I just want the theatrical experience of movies in the home to be as best as it can be, probably a lot like yourself.

As far as what I said about HD DVD being better than Blu-ray, I stand by that. I said I liked the menu system on HD DVD a lot better. It feels like more of an innovation to me than BD's menus do. Then I went on to say that maybe as things progress, they will catch up and make an even better high def experience. Furthermore, something about blu-ray's loading and just the overall experience feels clunky or like it's going to crash at any second. After that, I said if No Country For Old Men is supposed to be 'the shit' on blu-ray, well then I've already seen better on HD DVD... on a lot of discs. I don't think that has anything to do with the way the Coens shot the movie, the detail that exists in the film didn't make it to the disc, I believe. I didn't say that I hadn't watched the same movies I have on HD DVD on blu-ray yet, so that was a bit of a cop-out, but I intend to see if there are subtle differences. I agree that it's the transfer that should always be called into question, but I was observing that having finally jumped into BD, the results didn't impress me as much as I had hoped they would.

The flip side of that, as an example of poor quality transfer on HD DVD, the Assassination of Jesse James was a REAL disappointment. I'm sure it's the same on BD. They really fucked that one up... you can see the compression noise all over those wide open images. There are moments where it's really great, and then moments where it falls to shit. I'd argue that the regular DVD is more even in quality and acceptable than the high-def version. I'm just saying, High Def Digest said NCFOM was the 'reference' disc for blu-ray and I didn't see that at all. It looked like an overly enhanced DVD to me.

I really just want the movies in high def too, but the miser in me wants the best for my money, and even if I'm not going to use the 2.0 stuff, I'd like to know that I can. I just hope LG keeps up with these BH200 combo player updates, since the player does meet the 2.0 spec.

Don't think you can right now. Last night's FW update enabled the ability to play WMV tho, and DiVX over 2GB is now supported. Without fanning the flames of the 360 vs. PS3 debate, I own both, 360 was a XMas gift from a relative, I picked up the PS3 myself. I personally like the PS3 better, although there are more good games on the 360 right now to choose from. MS has managed to take a nice, sleek interface and turn it into a slow, ad-infested mess over the last 2 years, while the PS3's XMB is nice and smooth, and you're not forced to endure constant ad-spamming until you go into the PSN Store. There's a lot Sony needs to do with their online component of the PS3, but MS could take a lesson from them when it comes to creating a less tacky, obtrusive UI.

OHHHHHHH!!! So THAT'S why Harry reviews DVDs

I always wondered why the only time we ever hear from Harry is when he's reviewing DVDs of movies that we no longer care about because we've all already seen them. NOW I understand. This is the only way they'll keep sending him free DVDs - if he reviews them on his site. Everything makes sense now. I didn't know this.
That's why i won't do a system update on my PS3.

I got the system update about six months ago that allowed 1080 upscaling of DVD's and haven't touched the firmware since, and have no plans to do so. Couldn't care less about BD-Java or Profile 2, whatever the heck they are. I'm sorry for Mori, but i know many people who have had their PS3 spinning Blu-Ray discs for five hours a day since launch without a single hitch. The only issue i have with BD is the Region coding stupidity. What, so i'm going to have to pull overtime from now to Christmas to find $600 and import a U.K. machine to watch Eastern Promises or Master & Commander (to name but two) in HD? No dice.

I've had some godawful experiences with things like this, but this actually just sounds like you just had a weird run of bad luck. I know how frustrating it can be, believe me, but I don't think this is systemic. That's my gut reaction.

My gut reaction to the dude on the phone talking about slander is he probably should find another line of work.

Dips, drops & spikes in power can fry your toys without you ever knowing they are happening. The first thing I did when I got my PS3 was to buy a Line Conditioner which prevents any of that stuff. Just a tip for you others out there who drop loads of cash for a machine, you might consider that bit of 'insurance'. Also, please check out 'coupon the movie'. It's mandatory.

MORI, QUIT ACTING LIKE A BITCH: SONY IS TAKING CARE OF IT
by Playkins

Seriously, you have problems with your car sometimes, right? Do you deal with it and get it fixed, or do you whine about it to whoever listens?

Seriously, it sounds like Sony was VERY accommodating, MUCH moreso than Microsoft was with a friend's 360 that BRICKED after about 4 MONTHS. Maybe Sony accidentally sent you a bad one back, maybe it got damaged in shipping- who knows?

You probably ARE one of the 1%. I know three people with a PS3 not including myself and none of us have had problems, either.

More than HALF the people I know that have a 360 have had a RROD. Not too good an average.

I think it is TOTALLY UNCOOL of you to gripe about it on here when it sounds like Sony is at least ATTEMPTING to solve the problem. Want to know what happened when my Panasonic Camcorder ate shit DURING warranty? Nothing. They said it was physical damage (which it wasn't) and I'd have to pay $275 to fix it. I personally give props to Sony on this one.

You had me until Dogma.

What an awful, awful film. In fact, most of Kevin Smith's films are awful. Do not mounrn for this lost opportunity Mori. Do not weep in light of this particular withdrawal. I fear that by watching Dogma in Blu-ray you would only be overexposing yourself to the putrid stench of Smith's pseudo-indie, satire-wannabe - Now Available in Stunning High Definition! - dogpile of a film. Ahem.

First of all, the idea that this column isn't a tactic aimed at the PS3 people is silly. Not saying Mori is looking for freebies. But it does sound like you are still in the middle of getting things resolved. A new unit might be on the way right now regardless of this column but given that this could go round and round even longer, this column sure wouldn't hurt as to encouraging a prompt resolution.

On the other hand, to those saying, oh, Mori's using his position writing for AICN to try and pressure Sony into treating him better I have to say, yeah, so what's your point? Intentionally or not in the end he is doing that but, so what? More power to him. Holy crap! Have you had to deal with a situation like this? It can be a freaking nightmare. In my mind, you go in initially and play nice. If they're a good company they resolves the situation quickly and efficiently. If they don't do that, if it quickly becomes clear the company your are dealing with is going to make fixing the problem a big pain in your ass, then I have no problem with someone responding by being a big pain in the ass right back. ANd if you happen to be lucky enough to really REALLY be a pain in the ass while not being unethical or anything like that, good on ya! And in this case Mori has a very valid gripe. Part of his job is watching a reviewing Blu-Ray discs. The longer Sony futzes around the longer he is prevented from effectively doing his job. If he wants to tell everybody that will listen as loudly as he can that he is annoyed with the PS3 and Sony he should. A good warning to potnetial buyers and if it helps him out with Sony that's fine too.

I see a trend on the horizon. HD-DVD didn't win, so Harry and the gang are gonna take it out on PS3. Nevermind the fact that outside of Moriarty's article here, there are virtually NO reports of PS3s going bad.

and fuck Sony. I mean, you may like a Sony product, but like any mega-giga-corporate black hole they're only out for one thing - your blood. And I suppose your money. At first, I didn't agree with your reaction Mori. But utlimately, I believe you did the right thing. As a purveyor of all things geeky, I suppo
