But I really don't like the physicality of Depp as the pictures are capturing it. Been a Depp fan for a long time. I like his cartoonish antics, but I love his work when he's serious like in Blow, and Gilbert Grape. I really hope he's not getting lazy and realizes this should be a serious role. I love Mann's work and would hate to see this be a miss for him.

but man, how right you are Quint about those pics: he looks like he could've been part of the bank job. I don't know how looked the real Dillinger and he may be too "pretty" to look like him (like Orionsangels claims) but it doesn't bother me at all. First, period movies usually take so many BS liberties with the real deal that a pretty face is the least of my concern; second: it's a Michael Mann movie (a notorious History nerd and a nitpicker with details), so the bullshit-O-meter will be less tingling than, say, in a Ridley Scott flick; and third: Depp (at least in this flick) has a classic movie star look (think Rudy Valentino or more recently, Alain Delon in "Borsalino") that gives this gangster flick an edge. Add Christian Bale and Marion Cottillard and you have a must-see. Also, did I mention it was a Michael Mann film?

Seeing as we are talking about a gangster film... do you mean American Gangster? Just curious. Most of his historical films do take big liberties (though I usually let them slide as they are clearly more about myth than what really happened) but American Gangster seemed pretty spot on. So I'm actually curious what you found bullshit about it if that was the film you were referring to. I always thought it was ironic that everyone hated that film for reasons that all seemed to trickle down to him not taking huge liberties with a true story.

am I happy that this is a Mann film? Absolutely not. Mann has been disappointing me since before ALI. HEAT was the only decent movie he ever made and he ended it terribly. I can only hope that he's shooting up in the right vein again, the criminal vein, the only vein he ever got high from. (excuse the metaphorical crap, but you get the point.) All in all this will probably blow.

This could be Mann's 'comeback' movie, his last few were shit, Ali was alright but DEEPLY flawed, so lets hoping this will be along similar lines as heat, Manhunter, and Thief (my fave Mann film that was made in early 80s and starred James Caan).

I just hope I wont see shades of Jack Sparrow in his performance. Mann is losing his touch though as a director. Peter Berg is doing better than him and Bale another serious intense role along with his other roles. The saddest part is Marion Cotillard in this movie who is a terrorist sympathizer aka payroll of Ben Ladin. I can wait for the DVD.

I wasn't talking about American Gangster. I haven't seen it so I won't argue about its inaccuracies - I've heard there was a bunch of these in it, but it won't prevent me from watching the damn thing since it looked pretty good actually. My main gripe with Ridley Scott is not that he takes that much liberties: all H'wood films do, it's an annoying habit but sometimes it's meaningful and even "needed" to convey the Big Picture. What bugs me with him is his need to mistake credibility for realism pulling down the audience and WORSE, the movie, with him. Besides, it's been ten years that his loathed lil' brother takes more chances and bold decisions visually than him. The simple fact that the director of Revenge and Beverly Hills Cop II makes more visually innovative flicks (good or bad, "AVID farts" or not, whatever...) is in itself depressing. But that's just my opinion. And, callofduty, please don't talk about things you don't have the slightest clue about except the shit tabloids and Bill O'Reilly spread about Cotillard: I actually WATCHED the interview she did back then about the Twin Towers when it was broadcast, and ALL she was saying was: "I'm a sucker for conspiracy theories, no matter how dubious they are I can't help but listen to them"... which pretty much sums up the Fox News audience: they know the media is feeding them with shit but they keep listening cause that shit is catchy. Same with her, the only difference is that she's famous and you're not.

I'm surprised they didn't go with the stereotypical drum mag for the tommy gun that most gangster movies have... The gangsters supposedly loved them so they could spray large amounts of cover ammo for the scary-factor and also most likely because they couldn't hit jack shit anyway. Just an observation.

Thanks for the clarification. As for Tony Scott I think we'll just have to agree to disagree (god I hate that phrase). Ridley's gift has always been world making. The look of Alien and Blade Runner is imitated to this day. As for camera work and editing, it's true that he isn't as experimental and innovative as Fincher or Aronofsky, but honestly, I haven't seen anything in these recent Tony Scott films that isn't derivative of Oliver Stone, Steven Soderbergh as well as most of the other Mtv gen directors, and yes... even Michael Bay. It's pretty sad when you start ripping off the look of a director who is basically ripping off your original look.

Ali had only one problem with it... the script. It simply didn't have any balls. It wasn't willing to tread any ground that might show Ali as anything but great. There is so much to Ali's life that is interesting, but more than half of it isn't touched upon. When the film ended I seriously thought that the only way they could get away with cutting off the story at that point was with a sequel. I have yet to hear word of one though, so I'm left highly dissatisfied. Will actually pulled it off, and Mann really didn't do anything wrong. It was all script, and the fact that it is as watchable as it is... that's only testament to how good the cast and director were. Collateral also was a solid film with one flaw: the ending. The big action movie twist was just too big a bullshit plot point. All of a sudden we found ourselves in an 80s plot of the worse kind. It felt so out of place in a movie that got so much of its power from cold arbitrary circumstance. That said, it wasn't a full on High Tension bullshit twist, it just down geared a film that was driving like it could jump the Grand Canyon. It took it from near perfect to good. Otherwise it was the last good Tom Cruise performance before the man became to crazy to act, continuing proof that Fox was on his way to being big, and an all around tight thriller that made the jazz geek in me smile. As for Miami Vice... the film was perfect. Dead serious. I loved it.

When he first started off, I used to think 'ahh its alright, he's just a young kid getting pissed and fucking celebrities and having a good time', but then me and my mate saw him being interviewed, and he kissed the hot female reporter on the mouth, and he said 'was that good? Give you a buzz did it?' And then all became clear, all that fucking celebrities 'I dumped britney cuz she was too clingy' and going to all these parties made this lads ego spontaniously combust. I think thats why almost every single film he's been in since Alexander has flopped- the public have gotten fed up of his press shenanigans too. You know the Gallagher brothers from Oasis? Well thats what the guy is the equivalent to. I HATE HIM!!!

I know it's not a widespread opinion but I thought it was a good movie. Starts undercover, ends once the mission's complete. Nice look, tight plot, no fat. And a terrific atmosphere that modernized the TV show without turning it into a campy flick.

1. Michael Mann made The Last of the Mohicans and Heat (which clearly puts him in the great director category), not to mention Colateral and the Insider (which would put him in the pretty good director category). 2. Depp is an awesome actor, great range. 3. Christian Bale is more awesome than Depp. 4. Monica Belluci is freaking hot. 5. I guess i'll have to break down and actually watch miami vice. 6. The Road to Perdition was a great film. 7. I agree that Collin Farrell is the biggest jerk in Hollywood as far as i can tell.

Thats the way men were back in the 20's. The whole weight-lifting, pumping iron, fitness craze didn't hit the country (and the world) until the late 70's/early 80's. And now it's the norm to see guys who are ripped, and action heroes with bulging muscles, but back then they would have been considered freaks. In that time period, being tough was all attitude. Look at James Cagney. Take off his shirt and he's Martin Short. And how about Bogart. He's Billy Crystal. So don't worry your head about Depp. He'll be plenty tough, and be pretty to look at to boot.

I can't stand Don Johnson... unless its a good episode of Miami Vice. It's that same kind of ass hole ego some how buckling down into a performance that actually has a lot of heart. By casting an actor I can't stand again, Mann created that tension for me as a viewer all over again. It's part of the Miami Vice package and Mann got that (knowingly or not). If you are going to update the series without losing any of its soul where it counts, what other actor would have made sense?

this just in... local news in Wisconsin interviewed Michael Mann who revealed "Public Enemies" is only a working title in homage to the James Cagney classic, "The Public Enemy." The film will be called "Tommy Gun". The Clash song of the same name will be used over the end credits and as an instrumental when Dillinger & co. engage in battle. The music-inspiration carries into the alternate takes shot for the movie because Mann is, in fact, making a musical. Considering the talent involved; Depp("Sweeney Todd"), Cotillard("La vie en Rose"), Tatum("Step Up"), Bale("Newsies"), Wenham("Moulin Rouge") and Ortiz("Take the Lead"), the director said "Why not? 'Collateral' is the only one to succeed at the box office since 'Mohicans' ('Heat' only broke even). I gotta start making everyone happy, especially the assholes! Look at crashbarbarian for instance."

Who said anything about big, ripped action guys who lift weights? Warren Oates wasn't a big guy, but he played a hard-as-nails motherfucker in every movie he was ever in - including DILLINGER. And he had the face of a mean, hard-drinking criminal - like Dillinger. My point is, Johnny Depp plays girly characters, has a girly face, and looks NOTHING like John Dillinger. And, frankly, I don't think he has the range to play that kind of meanspirited gangster badass.

Awesome! I always thought Oates looked like one of the village people. And you, MosquitoMarch, were the lone person to see that movie? Kudos. For that you get a gold star and bragging rights on every future "Public Enemies" talkback. You claim Depp is too pretty to look like Dillinger, but most people don't know what Dillinger looks like, nor have they seen this Oates movie you speak of. Also, much of acting takes place in the face, so all he will need to do is act. Many people had the same reservations about Ledger playing the Joker, claiming he was too "girly" or that they didn't want a gay cowboy playing an iconic villain. It reeks of a meatheaded redneck mentality, and Ledger has proven them wrong, as I'm sure that Depp will prove you wrong. Tell you what, Mosquitomarch. When the movie comes out, go see it with an open mind, and blank out this Oates movie from your head, and then see if you like it. And if you don't, you can come back here and tell me "I told you so". See ya in 2009.

Finally my cheesehead home passes a tax credit for filmmakers and our first movie since is this. Nice to know a quality film with real stars is shooting here. I'm surprised more pictures haven't been submitted, the people are going nuts here over this. When it was announced they're scouting for more buildings for exteriors and extending the shooting schedule here people were all talking about it. I just hope some yokel doesn't piss off the film crew or something stupid like that.

first of all his accent. The first time I saw the picture I didn't even notice he was trying for a Southern dialect, then the second time I heard it but it was all over the fucking place. Just in and out sentence to sentence. Second of all he was so dour that he almost took the charisma out of the character. Trying too hard for the brooding intensity. He wasn't terrible in the film, and I blame Mann who, from the sound of set reports, was a bit to concerned with Farrell's appearance when he should have been concentrating on performance. Pretty good film though. Like someone said above, no fat. Kinda like that Mamet film Spartan, which is incredibly underrated.

I hope they release a new DVD of what is probably Mann's best film. The one out now has an awful transfer (I've seen Super 8 films that looked better), and is the "director's cut" that has the cool slow motion shoot out of the original version sped up for some reason to resemble a Chaplin film.
