What happened to Ratners 'Bringing Down the House'

..heard he was attached/rumoured to have purchased the novel and was shipping it around...good book about a young card counter cheating at blackjack...easily make a decent card flick if given the Ocean's Eleven polish (and obviously if Ratner is not 'directing')
But I can overlook that bit of 'artistic license'.

advance screening

I saw 21 at an advance screening for Boston University students (they filmed a lot of scenes here, so they gave us a screening). And cool director or not, it was pretty awful. I can see where the dude was trying to make Blackjack more "visually interesting", but he did it WAY too much. I felt like the movie was a short film with styrofoam peanuts of card montages and slow-motion character walking. Pretty ridiculous. And you want to talk about cliches? Holy crap... I could go on, but there's no point. It was an agreeable way to spend two hours, but I would never pay to watch this. And for future reference, Hollywood: attractive leading men are NEVER believable as the nerd who doesn't get laid, and sexual tension relies on the belief that the characters may not eventually have sex. From the moment Bosworth shows up on screen, I was silently screaming, "All right, fuck him and get it over with. Come on. You want to fuck him, fuck him. Quit wasting my time."
Bruce Thomas Wayne...I thank you...

...thought I smelt a court case there - this all sounded way too familiar. Is 'The Rat' still involved as a producer?
Just checked imdb and B.Ratner is exec prod...

That's exactly what I kept thinking when I was watching the movie. I kept thinking, "Why couldn't they play this like an Ocean movie?" But no. Instead of interesting characters, we get cliches. And dozens of montages of cards slapping tables while chip piles are shifted. There WERE two Asian characters, as well, but they obviously weren't the focus. The Asian guy was a silly smirking clepto and the girl was a shallow fashionista. Pretty dull. And Spacey? His shower scene as Lester Burnham was less masturbatory... Sturgess was dull as dishwater and Bosworth fared no better. BRIAN Bosworth would've made a more interesting female lead.

and was forced to wear that shirt?

Jeez, the puffy pirate shirt on Seinfeld was less hideous.

I don't even normally notice crap like this, but man, the ugliness of that shirt dominates all....

I bet his mom made that shirt.

It's not that hard to count cards

You don't need to be a genius or anything to count cards. You can pretty much pick it up over a few hours of practice. I learned how using a blackjack program I downloaded for free. What's hard is maintaining both your card counting strategy (which is a betting strategy, i.e. when to increase your bet) with your playing strategy (which is a playing strategy - i.e., when to take a card).

The talent from down under is so damn good. Just wish we could afford to keep them here. Alex Proyas, Noyce, Mclean, if only we had the stones to make genre films here.

Was great. There was no reason to change it. Oh wait, most the characters that were actually on the MIT card counting team were Asian. Can't have Asians in a movie. Let's get a couple of white kids. Even though Vegas would be instantly suspicious of two 21 year old white college kids with a $100k bankroll, but which would not be nearly as unusual for a couple of Asian kids. Per the book (a true story) this is one of the big reasons most the team members were not white. Fuck this movie. Looks terrible.
Um, did they even mention the movie once in that whole interview

I'm glad you had such a friendly conversation but weren't you supposed to talk about the movie? Wasn't that the whole freakin' point? You couldn't think of any questions about the movie, like I don't know, what his thoughts are on the pressure in Hollywood to cast white actors in roles that were supposed to Asian, what he liked and didn't like in the book, etc? Was that really hard?
