Unless Cruise is inviting boys to sleep in his bed, I'd watch anything he puts out that's good. And the guy makes some fucking good movies. He might not be DDL, but in every role you know he's giving it his best, which is a lot more than you can say for many entertainers.

If you bothered to finish reading my post before posting your hate filled diatribe, you'd note that my problem with watching his movies anymore is that his public persona prevents me from seeing the character he's playing anymore. He's done too many interviews where he has an air of superiority about him (Matt Lauer interview, his reaction to the poorly recieved water microphone, etc) that I see more of that Tom Cruise smugness rather than seeing whatever character he's playing.

I'm sad about Jason Lee being deceived as well but he hasn't been an ass to interviewers, doesn't act superior to people that don't agree with him and therefore I can still fully enjoy his movies and see him as different characters. There are others like Jenna Elfman, heck even John Travolta that I can still enjoy, but no, Tom won't be persuading much out of my wallet anymore. I hope that's ok with you, I'm sure he'll still make a lot of money to keep his child bride happy and make other people that aren't nearly as narrow-minded as me, very happilly entertained.

Believe it or not, there are some people who actually subscribe to the core tenets of their faith: love, joy, peace, patience kindness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self control. These and other virtues aren't limited to one religion or even one secular moral code. We all fall short of these ideals, but you don't have to look far to find people with authentic faith and with authentic integrity.

Faith without works is dead. That's true. But what you guys conviently ignore is the millions of people who quietly go about their faith and making the world a better place. These people don't make headlines. But followers of all religions, all faiths, have done some monumentally great things just like secularists have. It is simply part of our humanity.

And yes, I agree that if you berate a religion on the grounds of it being "silly", and you yourself belong to another faith, then you are being hypocritical. All faiths are "silly" from a purely scientific/historical/rational level. But religion is also beautiful. Who cares if Noah's Ark or the story of Buddha are actually true? They are beautiful stories. Their main purpose is not to accurately capture a historical event, but to teach us something. Just like Aesop's fables or the Greek myths or some of the great films we talk about on this site. Myths, fairy tales, fables, etc. may not be literally true, but they capture a truth in the world and in our humanity that is as powerful and beautiful and useful as any great scientific discovery. Underneath all these stories there is a foundation of truth.

I haven't read Xenu's story, but perhaps it's the case with that one too.

It's when religion becomes divisive, when it becomes fanatical and legalistic, when it becomes hateful, only then does it become dangerous and only then should it become.

Religion, at its best, is not religion. I don't even like the word religion. It's a cold, lifeless, and institutional word. We should change the world religion to relationship. That's what it should be about. Relationship to God and to man. What relationship do you have with God? "Well, I don't have one." Well what relationship do you have to your fellow man. "[Fill in the blank.]" Well then that's your relationship. That's your "religion".

That's actually a very secular view of religion, many of the faithful actually do believe that these 'beautiful stories' are very real. They're called 'believers' for a reason. Also, a lot of these stories aren't so beautiful, actually, a lot of them have to do with death, destruction, punishment, damnation, submission, etc. That said, I agree with you that it's not the stories themselves that are the problem, it's the believers. I forget the exact quote, but someone once said: "Religion was invented, and it was a wonderful contribution to the human experience... for about 15 minutes." The point is, don't hate the band, hate the fans. I respect people with true faith, especially the ones that are capable of having it without becoming proselytizing superior windbags, but I don't give the institution of religion itself a pass. You ask "who cares" if anyone believes these stories to be true, well, as I get older, I care a great deal.

If Snomusic wants to pray to Jesus for Suit&Tie's soul, that's cool, I respect that, though I believe it'll do more for Sno that Suit. What I don't respect is that still, in the 21st century, the #1 world power, a secular democracy, no less, is incapable of even considering a political candidate that isn't a true believer, of some kind. Imagine a smart, capable, interesting candidate that was also an athiest. No such animal in politics. It seems to me that as religion becomes less and less supportable, it's adherents cling more and more desperately to the vestments of power in our world. Dangerous times.
