...like me who know nothing about graphic novels or (comics) and who are too busy living the high life to Wiki (ahem) would it be possible to summarise some of the more obscure references - e.g. what on earth it's about? I'm not saying I won't find out, but there's a whole lot of porn on those Interweb tube that I'm not looking at for every minute I spend looking up comic book references. Peace out.

Like change everything from the graphic novel? I understand they would have to leave out the fact that the lead character was a rapist, but didn't they make the leads into heroes instead of villians?
Why bother when only 2 issues published?

When you have a massive back catalogue of Thor comics to work with would Vaugn pick to work on a comic that only has 2 issues released? I don't want another one of Millar's comics changed just because Hollywood can't be bothered to let him finish the series.

it's a comic about....

a comic book geeky school kid who decides to become a vigilante type superhero. He doesn't have any powers but makes himself a costume, to go out and fight villains (muggers etc) the story is told in flashback and it looks like he gets himself mixed up with the local mob. It's set in the real world (so to speak) so there are no other super heros in it.

that would piss me off. I know there are reportedly budget problems, and the studio is probably waiting for the BO return of Iron Man and Hulk to go full steam ahead... but Vaughn + iconic property + fantasy style movie was a must see for 2009. I haven't read KICKASS (I'm not really a Millar fan) but how about not blowing their wad like with WANTED and waiting for the books instead of greenlighting a film with no definite direction and a fewer fanbase? That sounds like moronic business decision. Are the first issues THAT good?

and it wasn't even all that. Millar's a just ok writer an benefits hugely from editorial supervision. his best stuff has been the spider-man and wolverine series' he did a few years back, the latter with Romita jr. I wonder where Moriarty is getting this 'two issues are out' crap?

I'm sooooooooo fucking sick of Millar's asshole-take on superheroes (though admittedly it will seem "fresh" and "hip" to movie-goers). Wanted is probably the first time ever I've actually been glad that a movie has made HUGE departures from the comic.

I've read the book so far (and sadly, only one issue is out, the next isn't until next week) but I can see why this is getting a treatment! I love the way the story is going, and it feels quite true to life in a some spots. I think it's got a real shot at becoming something aweseome.

And keep Millar away from it - he's a good writer, but he hates superheroes. Almost every story he writes shows his utter contempt for them. Get someone who actually LIKES superheroes and reboot a la HULK.

Adi Granov is a very talented artist whose style doesn't particularly lend itself well to sequential storytelling. Millar can write great popcorn entertainment when he's reined in. When left to his own devices without censors is when his stuff goes off the rails in my opinion. Greg Land is probably the closest thing to a Rob Liefeld for the 21st century. All flash, disregard for anatomy and storytelling, and will look extremely dated in just a few years.

Granov should stick to artworks and covers, where his stiffness can shine without pulling down the story - and the release date. As for Greg Land, I find his flaws pretty much the same as Granov's. But I don't wanna start an argument because first: I'm no exegete and second: exegete is already too big a word for me.

No one is as horrible as Liefeld. I don't understand those people who like his work. Blech. I refuse to buy anything with his name on it. Anyways, back to Kick Ass. Good stuff. Millar said it was being written like a screenplay so no wonder it's already optioned. Number one of the comic is sold out so get a copy now if you can.

No other artist alive can draw biceps as large and thighs as long as Rob Liefeld does (and that's just the females). Also, he's a master of making all the characters look exactly the same. Beat that, John Cassaday!

You're totally right. I have a friend who works in development at a production company and they're buying every comic they can get their hands on. I think it's cool how far things have come in that regard, but worry that a lot of bad movies are gonna get made because of all these comic projects being developed before anyone sees the book, ending in a collapse of the whole genre.

Come on... This book is fucking rubbish. More of Millar's clumsy pop-culture filled wish-fulfillment trash that would appeal to all the chimps who loved WANTED. There are countless other comics that would make more worthy movies than something that feels like it's already been done a dozen times.

--Completely. How many issues have there been? Oh, wait, ONE? This could be the biggest fecal pile in history and we wouldn't know it because it's yet to be seen. Hercules, it's interesting that you get so caught up on Millar's hype-machine--probably the one thing Millar is unequivocally great at. But then again, isn't that what Aintitcool is? It's a lot of nerds getting caught up in the hype machine and eventually being severely disappointed. I'm not saying Kick-Ass WON'T be good, I'm just saying we don't know if it will be yet, so let's slow down (and by let US I mean let HERCULES and anyone else who gets caught up in this bullshit). Millar is very hit (Ultimates, Superman: Red Son) and miss (Civil War--he really missed that shit). He cares more about his own sales than he does the quality of his work. Additionally, he acts like his sales are proof that he is the greatest comic writer in the history of mankind. News flash: Jerry Bruckheimer is NOT the greatest filmmaker of all time. Neither is Millar. He is, on the other hand, in line to be the biggest, most pompous Scottish tool of all time.

Vaughn showed some talent there, so if he can hone his storytelling a little more, this could be a decent flick.

That said, though, how is the marketing department going to promote a title like this in the Bible Belt? Change it to "Kick-Butt"?

I read the first issue and it was awful. I think Marvel just doesn't want to lose Millar so they let him do whatever he wants. A comic about a kid playing superhero in the real world? It should have ENDED with the car crash. The end. It's just an excuse to print the F word 100 times. This book is lame. How about put out QUALITY work? Is every writer these days just trying to sell a screenplay in comic format?

I thought it was one of the best and most entertaining movies of the year. Maybe it was the lack of star power, though it did have Robert DeNiro and Michelle Pfeifer, and Claire Danes, but I thought the relative unknowns, including the lead and his father and mother turned in the best performances of them all.
