First off, Harry would have a grandson. He was a widower with no kids in every previous film. And the last DH film was 20 years ago so he couldn't even have a son or daughter old enough to be a cop. Second, well, shit, Eastwood doesn't need to do this. He's one of the best directors working today. There's no reason to revist this character. If anything, "the Dead Pool" was one Harry movie too many. Besides Frank Miller and Robert Rodriquez already filmed the "last Dirty Harry" movie when they did "Sin City." I really, really, hope this doesn't happen.

I would go for either one. I mean if he's directing it (and he is directing GRAN TORINO, whatever it is) I can't imagine it won't at least be a little more thoughtful than the previous ones. I would want it to be intended as a final chapter. But it wouldn't necessarily have to be as serious as UNFORGIVEN. Maybe a more high quality BLOODWORK. And to be fair, the very first DIRTY HARRY sequel, MAGNUM FORCE, already went the "questioning the values of the first film" route by having Harry have to stop a circle of vigilante cops. So that's not really required. But my guess would be that if he really is doing a Dirty Harry then it will be somewhere in that "to DIRTY HARRY movies as UNFORGIVEN is to Clint Eastwood westerns" area. Because that seems more like what he's interested in these days.

I'm a huge fan of the Dirty Harry movies and once upon a time I even paid to see the Dead Pool as a teenager. I wouldn't put it past Eastwood to make a great Dirty Harry movie even at the age of 78. Having said all that I'm not completely sure that I want to see a very old Dirty Harry trying to shoot someone with a .44 magnum while barley even being able to walk at a normal pace. Dirty Harry was a complete badass and I want to keep it that way. I don't really want to see the "Unforgiven" version of Dirty Harry where he sorry for all his sins. Dirty Harry was never sorry for anything and that's the only Harry Callahan I'll accept. I really hope this rumor isn't true and Gran Turino is something else besides a Dirty Harry movie. With Harrison Ford already looking way to old to be doing the jumps and fighting he's doing in the Crystal Skull previews I hope that Clint doesn't do the same. The only movie with men that old acting tough was the Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster movie Tough Guys and they were playing it for laughs. Maybe Harrison Ford and Clint Eastwood can do a remake of that movie instead.

I could actually see Eastwood doing this, since it wouldn't be that far removed from, say, Blood Work. And while he's pushing 80, he's only about a year older than Leonard Nimoy, who is currently reprising Spock. I imagine Dirty Harry wouldn't really have to do anything more physically demanding than Spock at this point. He's also probably in better shape than John Wayne was during his final movies (even though Wayne was still a few years younger). Basically, unless you are expecting a showdown with a bear or Robocop... anyone with any experience with guns (that includes cops who don't carry the modern, standard issue 9mm) who wants stopping power would go with a 45 or 40. The .40 caliber was designed as a bridge between the pentation energy of a 9mm and the transfer of energy you get from slower moving .45 apc. Now the best round you can get from a pure ballistic point of view in a handgun, is the modern 10mm. That mamajamma has size, energy optimum ballistic stability. Anyways the whole "stopping" power argument is moot from two points. 1. with modern ballistic ammo like Glazer safety slugs, Black Talons/Rangers, that open up on contact or other type of "Combat" rounds they all do considerable damage. 2.Most people can't hit the ground aiming at the sky and that's on a clear, sunny day without adrenallin pumping and rounds flying at you.

I gotta disagree with you. I'll admit, I am extremely partial to 1911's, but those type of guns that would knock a sasquatch flat on its ass have entirely too much muzzle drift. You can control a 45 while squeezing off multiple rounds a second with practice. I've never seen anyone match the accuracy of a 45 with any 357 plus caliber when it comes to a friendly competition. And, yeah, shooting hydroshocks (or the [nameless] totally awesome rounds that have 2+ inch groupings at 25 yards) will stop any human dead. I'm not a big fan of the 40 cal., but if you load it with hydros, you can not only get better precision when poppin' off multiple rounds in a hurry, you can get the reassurance that what you hit ain't getting back up.

Well, we definitely know that Eastwood is going to direct and star in a movie called Gran Torino, and that it's coming out in December. Perhaps the reason for the secrecy is that they are simply considering making it into a Dirty Harry film? (Or perhaps Warner is hoping to talk Eastwood into it?) I believe Sudden Impact was originally intended as a stand-alone film, and Eastwood only later decided to adapt it to Dirty Harry. It's highly possible that Eastwood may want to end his action career on a better (and more successful) note than Blood Work. But if this is actually a similar type of thriller, Eastwood must see something in it to make it worth his while. The fact that Warner wants to release it so soon after The Changeling is the real surprise, and the only reason another sequel even sounds remotely possible.

I build 1911s, I love the 1911. I just like to show accurate facts when weapons discussions occur. Although, I am still somewhat unclear as to why as you wrote the .45 is the highest caliber round someone can accuratly and quickly fire. Which platform are you talking about? The 1911, Glock, Sig Saur etc. They all have their plusses and minusses when operating them.

I misspoke about the "highest caliber," but you know what I meant: you can't fire a pistol quicker, with more precision (counting the punch), than a 45. Personally, I'm a much better shot with a Sig 9mm (I once got 3 turtles, in 4 shots, in 2-3 seconds, at about 40 yards). I have stuck with (for the last few years) the Kimber Pro CDP II with Wilson Combat clips. Overall, it rates the best in my opinion. Especially, when you factor in the situations and distances you would need it in (such as a carjacking or rattlesnake/copperhead encounter).

I can fire my .357 revolvers and autos with just much accuracy and speed as my 1911s. Recoil can be tamed through practice and ammo choice. Firearms can have way different accuracy and felt recoil depending on the rounds. It's weied but true. I notice a considerable difference between factory loads of different manufacture and between factory stuff and what I load.

You do have a point Yack, about the "out of retirement" thing again, but I don't think it matters. Every story has been done a hundred times, it's WHO is playing that character. Clint has always been an ultimate badass, and I still find it believable that he can still pull it off. Much like Stallone did with Rocky and I think, Bruce did in DH4. The reason the film was made at all had to do with a survey. Warner Bros. was preparing to release the Sean Connery James Bond film Never Say Never Again (1983) and they took a survey. They asked movie goers to name an actor and a famous part that actor played. Clint Eastwood as "Dirty Harry" scored so high in the survey results, the studio told Eastwood it would be "open" to distributing another "Dirty Harry" film. Eastwood made this film as a result of that meeting.

Historically, Eastwood has done a "one for the studio" and a "one for him", i.e. he makes Warners a mass marketable film, and then turns around and makes whatever he wants and they leave him alone. He's always been loyal to the studio and understands the finances. (This is why he made films like The Rookie and Pink Cadillac) If this is true, I bet he'll immediately go from this to some pet project. All I know is the Dirty Harry series won't end with the lame Dead Pool. I still watch The Enforcer every time it's on Cinemax.

If true I think this is great. Everybody wants to piss and moan about the resurection of old characters/franchises but in this case I think it could be great. I love Clint in every way. He's a rarity in that hes not only a amazing actor but director as well. He doesnt do things half-assed and I highly doubt he needs the cash, so if he IS doing a Harry movie its b/c he WANTS to and b/c theres a good story there to tell. Yes hes old, nothing gets by you lol and I'm sure thatll factor into the story. I doubt we'll see a 80 year old Harry running down crooks and jumping off rooftops and such. The limitations an aging Harry would face would make his story that much more interesting, it would be part of the story. Whatever the plot would focus on would have to be something intense to move the old man to act in the first place. Regardless, I think the thing to remember is IF this happens I dont think it'd just be for shits and giggles or a cash in. I think Clint could give us a believable elderly Harry unlike say an aging Rambo or John McClane. I doubt this is going to happen, but if so I'm all for it.

First, I admit I was wrong to think that Gran Torino was about the Italian soccer team tragedy. Seeing the direction Clint was going with Million Dollar Baby and Flags/Letters, I thought it was the next logical step for him. However, this is such a bad idea. How many 80s stars are we digging up to revisit their popularity these days? Let's count, shall we? Sly Stallone - Rocky and Rambo Bruce Willis - Die Hard Harrison Ford - Indy Clint - Dirty Harry If Arnold wasn't the governator, you know he'd be in T4 or revisiting Commando. With Mad Max - Fury Road coming up soon, one can only assume Mel would do a cameo given this track record. What's next? Steven Seagal revisiting "Under Siege"? Van Damme revisiting "Kickboxer"? Roger Moore or Sean Connery revisiting James Bond ala "Never Say Never Again"? Hollywood needs to concentrate on the new talent - not rehash the old stuff. If I want to see Dirty Harry, Rambo, Rocky, or Indy, I'll pop in a DVD. Because no matter how much they revisit their characters, nothing will be quite as good as when they were in their prime.

What made Firefox great was not the dogfights between the jets. Granted, they were great, and could be much better if made today. But, that does not matter because the first 3/4 of the movie is one of the best espionage suspense movies I've ever seen. Dating myself here, but I saw it on the big screen as a kid. The thing is kids graduating high school today have no idea what the Cold War is. That will lessen the impact on anyone seeing the film today, but not enough to not enjoy Clint's performance. I remember Clint yelling at the dog in Russian. I always thought that was cool for some reason. John Ratzenberger as the submarine commander before he got typecast as Cliff Claven was great too.

It's because of just that, they were classic characters, and as such they are still interesting. Especially in light of the fact that in recent years we've had very little in the way of new iconic characters to take their place. Everything is so fucking generic now, both in terms of action, character and the new wave of so-called stars, few of which I'd even classify as real actors, and even fewer of which have any sort of real screen presence. That's why people crave the return of these older characters and the actors who played them, because the big screen was made for iconic larger-than-life characters like these, and it's been damn well starved of any such characters for far too long now. And if we can't make new iconic screen characters to enjoy then we can at least revisit some of the older ones while we still have the chance to do so. Maybe all the youth-obsessed A.D.D. suffering assholes out there object, because, you know, these people have lived lives and have the lines on their non-perfect faces to prove it, but frankly, you people get so much shit catered directly towards you that it's about damn time the rest of us got a little taste of something to our tastes too. Something that reminds us of a time when studio films weren't (almost) all pg-13 toned down over-marketed over-hyped youth oriented mtv-soundtracked fast edited pieces of forgettable fast-food throwaway crap.

People seem to forget that the original film was meant to be a stand-alone feature, a fact made obvious by Harry’s disgusted pitching of his badge into the lake after blowing away Scorpio, suggesting he was done as a cop. Police Squad: 1982. Hunter: 1984. Sledge Hammer: 1986. See how easy it is to just look things up? The person who said there was a "sledge hammer movie predating Police Squad, just IMDb's it, just looked at the titles and not the descriptions and still got it wrong. Yes ther was a horror movie sbout a kid beating people to death called "Sledgehammer" but that was also a year after Police Squad. I had no objection to the discussion aout gun specs that someone got bent out of shape over. Callahan''s magnum .357 obsession is all about that. Heck, read the comics like Bishop's "Fanni Hall" or Mike Grell's "Jon Sable, Freelance" - both properties are drenched with the gun and weapon fetishism. i always thought that "hunter" was "Sledge hammer" played straight, but apparently it was "Dirty harry' watered down for TV. The chronology makes sense to me. East clintwood today totally looks like a grandfather, not someones day. and the way he was portrayed as a promiscuous casual sex indulging swinger in the first movie, it would be easy to believe he had kinds running around that he never knew about. Oh, and Dead Pool had Harry in a car chase with a radio controlled model car and him shooting the bad guy with a harpoon gun. How can anyone not acknowledge that it was deliberate self parody. Dirty Harry V: Dead Pool = Star Trek V: the Final Frontier. They were comedies, folks. Satire. Mad Magazine style parodies. in a way Magnum Force (Dirty Harry vs. crazed vigilante cops) was a sort of self parody. And that one where his girlfriend played the vigilante rapist-killer was sort of a version of that Dirty Harry/Death Wish crossover I always wanted to see. And after "Do you feel lucky, punk," "A man's got to know his limitations," "go ahead make my day" and other fine nationally popular and presidentially quoted catch phrases, how great wasit that the "Dead Pool" catch phrase was "Well, I guess you're just shit out of luck"? Harry's pretty bad at covering his partners. They team him up with a black guy, an Asian, they go to the hospital. They team him with a feminist, she gets herself killed. If this movie happens and it's set in a gay San Francisco, wanna bet he gets teamed with a gay cop who gets killed?

He won't screw it up, he made Unforgiven, Mystic River, and Million Dollar Baby.... I mean Unforgiven and Mystic River alone are enough to make him one of the greatest of all times. The actual post was about Sledge Hammer coming before The Naked Gun, as the movies weren't like the Police Squad tv show. They made Drebin a bumbler and everything was played more obvious (and not as funny in my opinion) and threw in some "Harry" riffs that seemed derived from "Sledge." Jokes about kicking in the door and getting the foot caught as well as shooting someone after losing the badge were done first on Sledge before they made their way into the Naked Gun movies.

Another Dirty Harry would be great. We've had Rambo, Rocky, John McClane, and Indiana Jones come back, why not Dirty Harry? That also makes me want...another Snake Plissken movie. With Kurt Russel. Not a shitty remake. Maybe I'm the only one who wants it. Oh well.

I think he's earned his corner office by now. As for a new Dirty Harry film, its simply just not believable. These other folks have been talking about doing Die Hard 4 and Indy for years. If Clint's been waxing romantically at any time in the past few decades about reprising Harry Callahan on screen again, I'd love to see the link.
