I've been watching South Park since it debuted on Comedy Central in 1997. Back then, my friends and I were still in college and thought this was the best thing to ever happen to television since MTV. We used to have rituals every Wednesday night when we would meet up at my cousin’s house to watch South Park and order pizza and drink beer. Now, as my friends and I have matured into our late 20s and early 30s (damn, I feel old all of a sudden), most of them feel they've "outgrown" the show and have since gone on to other programs. Some of them have gotten married and are raising young families of their own. The only T.V. they watch now is what every other Tom, Dick and Harry watch in Middle America - The Apprentice, Dancing with the Stars, American Idol and Deal or No Deal. Some members of my college posse didn't even know South Park was still on the air. They definitely don’t want their own kids watching it (What is it about married life that makes people turn into puritans?). I'm the complete opposite. I still watch the show as I did back in college, if not more so. Maybe it’s because I’m still single, I don’t know. I think South Park is just so well written and just funny as hell. I can’t imagine life without it. Some older viewers simply don't like South Park. They find it crude, irreverent and obnoxious. Some of my friends still think it's funny but just dismiss it as sophomoric toilet humor. Man, I wish we were in college again.

It started out with me and my girlfriend watching it after suffering through Top Model, then her work schedule changed and she started working nights on Wednesday, and I STILL watched. At first I didn't like it. I was even a little offended, when Cartman squirts the blood in Kyle's mouth I really couldn't even muster a smile. But, once Kyle got pissed that Cartman kept saying, "I'm HIV positive" it killed me. And I think that's what they were going for there. They wanted to alienate you and then bring you back, because Cartman is still Cartman, even with AIDs. They should have hit the whole money cures AIDs idea harder, but oh well. I'm just trying to stay HIV-positive in an HIV-negative world, I suppose.

I love social commentary as much as the next guy, but South Park is supposed to be, first and foremost, a comedy. I appreciate what they were trying to do, and it's probably a good point they're making, but as I said, South Park is a comedy. The show's gotta make me laugh. Other than a chuckle here and there, this episode was pretty awful. Last week was forgettable, too. Hope next week is a return to form for the show.

in style: camera angles, direction, color, tone, use of music; I know this show is supposed to be a comedy, but I think Trey really showed he has some talent beyond fart and dick jokes in this episode. Not only was there a good satirical message, but it was given substantial weight through atmosphere. I don't know if this topic (paparazzi) in particular deserved the strong treatment given, but I'm glad they attempted this stylistic experiment.

Was that there was absolutely not subtlety whatsoever. I love South Part social commentary, but the great thing about it was that nothing was never really openly thrown in your face, except for perhaps a final speech by Stan or Kyle. This one had numerous speeches of those kind, right from the beginning, and every joke itself seemed to have an extra line thrown in just to make sure the audience got it. I absolutely agree with the view that Trey and Matt have on the media when it comes to celebrities, and I thought a coupe parts of this episode (especially Butters as the squirell) were pretty funny but I wish the point of the episode hadn't been thrust into our faces numerous times throughout.

So they have the freedom to do one of these every so often that's not necessarily shit-your-pants funny. I mean, Cartman is their go-to character for easy laughs and he's gone after like two scenes. I actually switched to something else for a few minutes. But the last 10 minutes were pretty outstanding. THAT SAID, the episode was laugh-free. With the Ramseys and Congressman Condit all at once. This was a fantastic episode. Just because an episode isn't a laugh a minute doesn't mean it's not good. It was refreshing to see them take the side of a celebrity for once, and have something to say, in an incredibly extremist manner. Once again: fantastic episode.

It was making fun of US, we were on the receiving end that episode...or the people obsessed with everything Britney does and are so SHOCKED when she gets a zit or has greasy hair. I loved what they did though, they made it seem like the episode was just about the fact that people were obsessed with her and people should leave her alone, and like it actually was going to be preachy, then it just went the complete and total opposite direction. You think its about how people love to watch celebrity’s crash and burn, and then they give it a purpose, so you are like, ok well why does she have to die? Then it’s the most ridiculous purpose you’ve ever heard of, a sacrifice for the corn harvest. It was not about leaving Britney alone, it was just about how stupid society is for this Britney-centric thing we have going on right now. Was I the only one waiting to hear a “CHEESY-POOFS” when that satanic singing kicked in?

They are allowed to make fun of other people too, none celebrities, the general populous. They do it all the time. Clearly they make fun of celebrities and make a damn good living off of it too, but to think they were trying to be holier-then-thou is ridiculous. Need to spend a few minutes (or hours) watching people at a bookstore or grocery store when they grab the newest issues of LIFE & STYLE, OK!, LOOK!, STAR, People Magazine, or US WEEKLY. YOU may not care about Britney (or any other celebrity gossip) but the sad truth is that the magazines I listed above are the top-sellers. Not TIME, not Rolling Stone, not Newsweek, not the New Yorker -- For every one of the intelligent periodicals I used to sell at my bookstore, I'd sell a few dozen of the gossip rags. MOST people in our society are shallow, stupid, and celebrity-obsessed. Some of us roll our eyes at them, but that doesn't change the fact that we are in the minority. If I had a dollar for every time one of these people tried to start a conversation about Britney, I'd probably have enough to retire on. When given a bookstore gift card, about 80% of the American population will go into a Borders or Barnes & Noble and head straight for the magazine rack or DVD section. Books? What the fuck are they? I've had people plop down $50 worth of magazines and pay for them with a gift card. FIFTY DOLLARS!!! You know what good books you could buy for $50 in a decent bookstore?!?! Then you have the people who work nearby, or are stopping to grab some reading material for the commute or their down-time at work-- They spend that time reading about Britney and looking at pictures of her stretch-marks. They start office pools about when she'll die, and how, and they joke about it. It's not just a "Britney thing", either. When she's out of the picture, they'll pick someone else to be on the cover of the trash magazines. And have you ever seen the insides of those magazines? Utter crap. Crap writing. Crap photography. Crap opinions. Crap dishing about celebrities. Crap speculation about celebrities gaining half a pound or wearing a band-aid. TOTAL CRAP. And people buy this stuff and consider it "reading." This episode was satirizing THOSE people-- The ones I loathe. The ones who made my days in the bookstores seem sort of shallow, and made me lose a lot of hope for humanity, because here they were, surrounded by intelligent, amazing authors, and they picked up US WEEKLY or OK! Magazine instead. That's like having a choice between a delicious steak dinner and a piece of shit on a Big Mac bun, and picking the Big Shit-Mac.

When they hit it big I wonder how much Papparazi activity went up because from the times I've gone to that website they have put up pictures of the most irrelevant crap. Oh my God, Jeremy Piven is picking up Ice Cream at whole foods!!! Someone made more money for that one picture than I did all week. And the one time I saw the show I couldn't help but think these people haven't matured past high school. I Am Legend, Frosty The Snowman, and I'm not sure what that last reference was with the townspeople and the chanting, but it reminded me of Hot Fuzz, or more accuratley whatever it was that Hot Fuzz was referencing...(Wicker Man maybe? I'm not sure.) Admittedly though it was mostly downhill after Britney blew her head off though. Though for that split second I'd laughed harder at the show then I have in a long time. .. for me has always been that they use the "naive" viewpoint of the children to point out the obvious bullshit in accepted cultural norms. And that they do this while being consistantly funny and surreal. This weeks episode wasn't the funniest ever, but it was funny and a prime example of how the kids have to just say "WHAT THE FUCK?" at the things they see around them. My favourite example of this was the NAMBLA episode - after the NAMBLA member gave this heartfelt speech about how misunderstood they are one the kids just paused - looked at him - and said "Dude - you fuck kids!". OK so maybe kiddiefucking isn't an accepted cultural norm but you get my point about how they hit their targets. I'd agree with those people who found this episode too creepy to be totally funny, but the gargling Britney voice did crack me up every time. It did get great though with the harvest sacrifice scenes. It's amazing how they always get the tone and style of the film/TV genres they are ripping off so right, with the music and framing down to a tee - they never get the proper credit for that. Screw being "relevent" or "edgy" - South Park just takes the time to be good!

That a fella is genuinely upset, distrubed, and, somewhere, laughing, at the same time... how many shows - how many films - can pull that off? The final third of that was genuinely fuckin upsetting. Great post. I feel your pain. Like a lot of people here, when the episode didn't first start launching on Spears i was a little dissapointed but as the episode unfolded, I saw what they were getting at and really loved and embraced what they were trying to say. Brittney wasn't the point, It was the fact that our supposed "civilized" society is anything but and our society is trained now to ficus on frivolous crap rather than important issues that determine the strength and well being of our society. To me, the funniest thing in that episode was how the democratic debates for the most important election in my lifetime keeps getting interrupted for "Brittney Wautch" and then suddenly everyone is sitting on the edge of there seat saying "Oh man, what's she done now". Fucking hilarious. That's truly the state of the nation. And the other side splitter for me was the kids joining in on the satanic chanting at the end. like it's inevitable to be assimilated into this bullshit society obsession. It really wasn't about Brittney or even the papparazzi. It was about, as usual, our fucked up society with our priorities completely out of whack. If it actually focussed on Spears, I'm sure they would have tore her a new asshole.
