Actually, I think this is going to be one of the greatest adaptations of a musical. I've seen the musical twice (once in touring, once in Vegas). The movie seems remarkably faithful to the vision of the stage show, and even the ditz from Mean Girls looks like she's got the role nailed. The one question I'd have is the role played by Julie Walters. It's usually played by someone, ahem, FATTER. So I'm withholding judgement to see how she handles the role. One minor issue aside, the movie looks and feels great. And I've notice dthat Streep's voice is a lot more soulful and expressive than what I've gotten out of the various stage productions--ie less of a pop-song feel to it, and more emoting. So I find her version of Mamma Mia to be entrancing and deep, if not quite as hoppy as the others before it. Let's face it. Watching some screen greats chew it up on scene is going to be great.
Same thing happened with Sweeny Todd... I don't get it.

Why do everything you can to hide what kind of film it is? Audiences were SO pissed off in the UK when they found they'd been tricked with Sweeny Todd (well, those that didn't already know it was a musical anyway). It's a really stupid move.

So... really the actors are simply scenery, just like the visuals. It's a fun story, but probably is best kept as a stage production.

There are enough shots of people dancing around and the non-stop ABBA music is a clue. Unlike Sweeney Todd, which only had the "You sir/Too sir/I will have vengeance..." snippet in some ads, this looks like a musical romp.

I saw the show in Toronto and it's a lot of fun. It plays like a traditional musical, just with ABBA songs. It works surprisingly well and the film should be gorgeous since it's set in the Greek Islands.

Saw this in San Diego, Broadway traveling cast, and the best part was the encore/curtain call, where the cast came out and rocked it and the audience rocked with, a couple thousand 35-55 year olds reliving their dynamic disco youth. You can't put a price tag on that, it's lightning in a bottle and a little blue pill on the nightstand. A 'Rocky Horror' audience interaction moment, hearkening back to free love and bra-less disco dancing. It was a beaut. Mock if you must, and I know you must, but it was a pretty cagey way to tell a story wrapped around Abba tunes - not as good as Jersey Boys, but pretty great. Don't know that it can translate to the screen.

I'm rock n' roll guy, but I have to admit ABBA wrote and crafted some excellent songs (and some cheese too). When they played London, Joe Strummer and Jimmy Page went to see them. I'll take my wife to this movie, and I'll probably enjoy it.

they have songs that rocked the cock... and a very different cock this movie will suck. It's the same size, width, and girth as the one Across The 60's Cliched Bullshit Universe sucked. This is a waste of Abba songs, that babe from Mean Girls, that dude from Pride and Prejudice that my mom has crush on, but less of a waste than paying 100 bucks to see on Broadway... while also more of a waste than cutting your penis and dipping it into an old fish tank.

I don't know what it is. She's a great actress and all that but I just get the feeling if I knew her she'd be like my evil aunt.

About the movie, I don't know, it should be something I'd like. I didn't see the stage production because the whole idea of a bunch of ABBA songs performed live just makes me want to see ABBA live which will never happen, and it's also why the world is in the state it's in. Only an ABBA reunion could generate the amount of happiness and love and pure healing light of the universe necessary to bring us out of our de-evolution. But they won't ever do it. :( So the whole thing makes me think of evil aunts and the coming apocalypse. *sobs*

and i do NOT approve of this movie. sure, i'm all for big scenes with people dancing to abba, but as for everything else? honey, it's been DONE, and done much better by others. "priscilla queen of the desert" and "muriel's wedding" were the first, best, and last words needed on abba. please find a newer gay icon to leech off of, hollywood.

You don't have to be gay to like ABBA! Fantastic group with a great backup band. They knew how to make great songs... much, much better than most of the crap out today. Many rock stars and producers admired them in their hey day and many admit to liking them or naming them as an influence today. Their session players even contributed to their unique sound as they were very talented as well. Ola Brunkert RIP. Saw him drum on a couple songs a few years ago when an ABBA tribute band came through town. Agnetha and Frida could really sing compared to most singers then and today. The film has added dialogue, etc. that the playright added for the screen. Benny Andersson gathered together most of the original backing band to re-record the music a few months ago so it will sound more like ABBA than anything you could imagine other than the original records. It would be neat if they included some original songs for the credits... maybe even some of the tracks that Benny and Bjorn have refused to release in the past. The play and probably the movie are more female than male appeal, but everyone I know, men and women, and former ABBA haters loved the musical and this will probably be a big one for this summer.

Was probably the only movie that was actually good using the songs from the Beatles. This looks like just the story behind the shitty songs ABBA recorded...

Yeah yeah they sold millions, but that doesn't make them good, just a whole lot of people don't care about music unless it's "IN", look at Celine Dion... Diane Worwick... Fuuuukkkk they sell millions also, but their songs still suck ass...

They know what they look like now and probably what they feel like. Agnetha's the youngest and she's turning 58 in April. The rest are in their 60s. Benny and Bjorn look like a couple of old grandpas. The girls have fared better but still, they'd end up having a folky show more than an energizing pop/rock/disco event. They never were in it for the money - they were in it for the music. I agree with them - I'd much rather remember them the way they were. Something else to remember - they absolutely hated touring. They were over that with their individual successes before ABBA. The reported offer of a billion US to tour was for 100 shows - a crappy deal if there ever was one as they probably would've never seen that money. They know that most money on tours these days is made from merchandise and there's not really much left to sell that most fans don't already own. And contrary to the shit for taste idiots that seem to populate this website posting inane drivel, the film will probably be great. I already think it's better than the musical, which I've seen twice. You probably need to see all the trailers to get a better feel for what this movie is about. You need to see this one and the first international trailer over on YouTube.
